When the novel opens, letters have just announced that all three girls have gained state scholarships to university: two to Cambridge and one to London.Family relations, whether overwhelming or all but obliterated, are important to the plot, leading each of the trio to veer off in a particular direction. Hetty goes to the Lake District to bone up on the English classics; Una to various remote Youth Hostels with her cycling companion, Ray; and Lieselotte first to London, then the West Coast of America, as the time of transformation gets going.The Flight of the Maidens is (among other things) about ways of achieving emancipation, and the price exacted.
“Youth is a blunder” reads the epigraph (by Disraeli) to Jane Gardam’s novel Bilgewater. A certain amount of juvenile blundering and miscalculation goes on here. At times, the narrative rushes into a kind of hectic bottleneck mode, though counteracted by the sheer buoyancy of the undertaking. The separate journeys take in a few of the agitated confrontations the author does so well: between her central characters and imposing, mad old people, or outspoken young ones.Hetty, among the mountains and lakes, first stumbles on a table on which reposes a copy of The Perfumed Garden, and then comes face-to-face with a scatty family named Fitzurse. Una, meanwhile, is failing to relinquish her virginity owing to constant interruptions in the hostels. Lieselotte is acquiring a refurbished persona, and coming to her senses in a wood near the Pacific, where – in the manner of a fairy tale – a German banker befriends her and arranges her return to Cambridge to take up her place.All this, and more, is recounted in the author’s usual luminous and anarchic style.

This has eroded the advances made by the Congress government’s economic reforms; yearly income has dropped from $330 (pounds 215) in 1991 to $290 in 1993. Over 40 per cent of India’s 920 million people live in poverty.Ignored, too, in the electoral fray is the fact that India spends only $9 a year per person on education and one dollar on health.
None of the parties is willing to confront urgent issues such as India’s booming population or its poverty. If this forecast proves true, India faces the unsettling prospect of a hung parliament, or a coalition government patched together between one of the big three parties and the rowdy regional ones.Like the gymnasium wrestler intent on grinding his opponent’s face in the mud, the politicians have lost sight of any goal beyond their own personal victory. Gains by the BJP and the leftist coalition are expected to reduce Congress’s share to less than 200 parliamentary seats. Forty-six architects competed and the result was a grand Gothic edifice enclosing a school with rigid discipline and a public school atmosphere. The railway had made the area easily commutable, and the guild members’ sons needed an education. Some experts say that sending in the big guns, as Gillian Shephard did yesterday, in the shape of a new education “hit squad” to run the school, could yet lead to rejuvenation and relative success.When the Worshipful Company of Grocers founded its school in Hackney in 1876, the area was a wealthy city dormitory populated by the merchant class.
But the story of this inner-city school, whose troubled recent history has finally led to direct action by ministers, is more than that. It is also the story of a rapidly changing area of London where teachers have strived to keep up with the pace and where the strain has begun to show.
Although there is a certain grim inevitability in the history of inner- city schools such as this, there could still be a happy ending. This is the story of Hackney Downs, where the young Harold Pinter once made the girls swoon as he played Romeo and where failure, disruption and uncertainty now top the bill. This is the story of a how a school rose to greatness and fell from it into perhaps irretrievable decline.
