We learn how Max met and lost his wife, Sally; and how, as a young man, he unwittingly sparked a feud with a creationist – the full ramifications of which he has yet to discover.
Few authors possess a grain of Clare George’s intelligence, even fewer manage to splice a regularly amusing, often moving narrative with ideas of the range exhibited here. His investigative reporting is lethally painstaking (see how he pieces together the biography of an American missile which somehow came into Israeli hands, was fired at an ambulance and killed an innocent Lebanese family). But the sense of inescapable doom which builds up in this book is misleading. Television industry insiders in America are quietly acknowledging this weekend that a trend long predicted but never quite proven may at last be coming true: the appetite of the viewing public for reality television shows has finally been sated Especially tired, perhaps, is the celebrity-reality format. A few weeks into the all-important autumn season, a new pattern seems to emerging where old-style dramas, including a new series on ABC television about the first woman in the Oval Office, called Commander-in-Chief starring Geena Davis, are displacing the reality programmes in the race for ratings.
“The decline of reality is official now,” Warren Littlefield, the former president of NBC Entertainment tells Broadcasting and Cable magazine in tomorrow’s issue. Others just like a brawl, as anyone will be aware who heard the staggeringly awful debate about the Iraq war between Christopher Hitchens and the Respect MP George Galloway.
I don’t know if this is why they are taken more seriously than intellectuals here, but I suspect Pinter’s short fuse and acute sensitivity to criticism are in some measure the result of enduring years of sniping from the right-wing press. The problem is that such defensiveness fuels a pugilistic atmosphere, to the point where intellectuals sometimes undermine the causes dearest to them. It may not be an accident that both come from a part of the world where writers risk imprisonment, the fate facing Pamuk if he is found guilty of “denigrating Turkish identity” at a trial in Istanbul on 16 December. Over the next few days, I’ve no doubt that Pinter will be mocked as much as he is congratulated, in a way that wouldn’t have happened to the other rumoured candidates for the prize. In Turkey, my friend Orhan Pamuk writes controversial political novels but inspires a degree of popular affection hard to imagine being bestowed on a novelist here; once, walking in Istanbul with him late at night, I was astonished when Pamuk was approached by a reader who engaged him in lively debate about his latest novel.
The Lebanese poet Adonis (Ali Ahmad Sa’id, who was born in Syria but moved to Lebanon in 1956) is no stranger to politics either, writing elegiacally about the Israeli invasion of his adopted country and making powerful interventions in recent debates about secularism and the veil. But while his behaviour is extreme, I think it says something about the status of the engag?ntellectual in this country, where literary success and political commitment sit uncomfortably together. As an introduction to British intellectual life it must have been awesome; in fact I know it was because the guest of honour, a brilliant American crime writer, mentioned it when we met for lunch in London only last month
There are dozens of such stories about Pinter. Pinter, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature last week, took umbrage at a remark from one of the guests about nuclear weapons, launching into an angry speech which ended only when someone diverted his attention by asking the Test score.
He reminded me of a literary dinner we attended some years ago, which was enlivened (if that is the right word) by a spectacular outburst from the playwright Harold Pinter. One evening last week, at a debate in west London on the state of the media, I ran into a publisher I hadn’t seen for ages. The build-them-up-knock-them-down cycle has turnedfaster than ever before.
More from John Rentoul. The press hounding of David Cameron over whether he has used class A drugs has been sudden, vicious and overwhelming. It is so long since the Tories have known what it was like to feel that winning was even possible that they were vulnerable to the artificial stimulant of the Cameron leadership campaign
After the high, the low: the paranoia and self-doubt. The party felt energetic, young and talkative, convinced that it could carry all before it.
The Conservative Party has a drugs problem. For a moment it was flooded with feelings of euphoria, confidence and well-being. A friend of my father’s once said I had enjoyed the privilege of seeing things that no other man had seen. But after a flood of questions from students in Sydney about suffering in the Middle East, I began to wonder if my privilege had not also been my curse
More from Robert Fisk. And all the while, my book was coming to haunt me.How does war affect you, they kept asking, and I put on the stiff upper lip and said I had grown used to it; which is a lie, as I eventually admitted at City University in London, because dead children and dead women were beginning to sadden me more than they used to when I saw them.I told the journalism students there that when I saw families walking happily in London or Paris, I wondered whether I had not missed out on life, that perhaps comparative safety and security with nothing more than the mortgage to worry about was preferable to the existence I had chosen for myself. Ouch.I kept quoting the Israeli journalist Amira Hass – that our job was to “monitor the centres of power” – to which a lady, a member of a Jewish society I addressed a week ago, sagely remarked that the media, too, was a “centre of power”. At Westminster School, a boy asked me for a solution to the Middle East – the wisest question of all, to which, of course, I had no answer – while in Canberra, I was pointedly asked what journalism is for.
“What would you ask him if you saw him now?” I was asked in Glasgow on Friday “I’d ask him ‘Why?’” I replied. So many of them, including an Iraqi soldier who died during the Iran-Iraq war. Close to his decomposing corpse I lay crouched under shellfire, noting the wedding ring on his blackened finger, still bright with love for a woman who did not realise that she was a widow.Because I’ve met Osama bin Laden, it seemed that every Australian or British or Lebanese student these past two weeks wanted to know what he’s like (answer: naive and dangerous with a ferocious faith and self-conviction), and I fear I’ll never shake this man from my side. The BBC’s Philip Dodd stared at me over the Night Waves microphone this week and pronounced GWFC to be “an elegy to the dead” and “a walk through graveyards” and suggested that I reminded him of a Victorian liberal with a passion for empire.Yes, the dead are there. Indeed, it was a dear friend of mine who realised my state of depression one afternoon and insisted that I walk by the sea and drink a pint of Guinness and think of other things I’ve felt the same these past few days. I endure what must be weightlessness. My book, a 1,366-page tome called The Great War for Civilisation (henceforth GWFC), is about the pain, injustice and genocide of the Middle East It was a distressing book to write. Or any of the places on three continents I’ve been in the past 12 days I don’t suffer from jet lag.
The new compensation scheme will cost £12bn over the next 50 years, £4bn more than originally planned. There was good news for around 5 million people this week when the Government scrapped its proposed compensation scheme for victims of a multi-billion pound pensions blunder in favour of a more generous package. The new compensation scheme will cost £12bn over the next 50 years, £4bn more than originally planned.
What was the blunder? The last Conservative Government failed to publicise changes to the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme (Serps) made in 1986 which halved the amount of Serps that widows or widowers could inherit on the death of their spouse. What is Serps?Serps was set up in 1978 to provide a state second pension for those without occupational or personal pension schemes Around 20 million people pay into Serps. The Conservative Government set the changes to start in 2000, so people could make alternative provision for their spouses. However, the Government failed to publicise the change for a full 14 years, raising the prospect of millions of people claiming they had not been given time to make new arrangements. How would the old compensation scheme have worked? In March, Alistair Darling, the Social Security Secretary, announced a “protected rights” compensation scheme in two parts. People who could show they had been misled by the Government could claim a permanent exemption from the changes. For those still facing the cut in pension, the changes would not occur until October 2002.
Critics said this would be an invitation to fraud, and that it would be impossible for most people affected to prove they had been misled. The sheer size of the problem also made the scheme a logistical nightmare, according to these critics. This week Mr Darling came up with a new, three-part scheme. How will the new scheme work?First, under the new scheme everyone over state pension age (65 for men, 60 for women) on 5 October 2002 will be exempt from the proposal to halve the Serps entitlement available to bereaved spouses. They will be able to pass on 100 per cent of their Serps entitlement, as now. This will benefit about 3 million people.Second, the new rules will only apply to men and women who are now 10 years or more away from state pension age. For these people, the changes will be phased in.Contributors to Serps reaching pensionable age between 2002 and 2004 will be able to pass on 90 per cent of their pension. Anyone claiming their pension between 2004 and 2006 can pass on 80 per cent, between 2006 and 2008, 70 per cent, and between 2010 and 2012, 60 per cent. This second measure should help a further 2 million people.
The 50 per cent cut will only apply to people retiring on 6 October 2010 or later.Third, if you can produce documentary evidence that you were misled by the Government over Serps, you will still be able to claim 100 per cent of your inherited pension, however old you are. The DSS will write this week to all those who have contacted the Department already to explain the scheme. The Government’s viewMr Darling commented on the new scheme, saying: “Millions of people were given wrong, misleading or incomplete information about changes to Serps introduced by the last Government in 1986.”This problem should have been sorted out 14 years ago. What happened in the years after 1986 was a series of colossal blunders which were inexcusable and caused untold distress to millions of people. In March, I announced that we have already deferred the change in the inheritance rule by 2 years until October 2002. No one will be affected by the policy change before that date.”Age ConcernGordon Lishman, director-general of Age Concern England, said: “Alistair Darling’s announcement is a victory for Age Concern’s two-year campaign. It will come as a huge relief to pensioners who have been living under the cloud of the widows’ Serps changes.
These people can now enjoy retirement knowing their spouse will be properly provided for if they die before them.”Clearly the Secretary of State has listened to our issues about the existing redress scheme and has made considerable concessions. We hope the Government will learn from this experience and ensure that in future contributors to public pension schemes receive prompt and accurate information about changes. We look forward to talking to the Government about this so that people will never have to live with this kind of worry again.”Age Concern was the first organisation to identify this issue in autumn 1998 and we are delighted our campaign has been successful.”For more information:Department of Social Security public enquiries: 020 7712 2171, internet address: www.dss.gov.uk. In Peckham, where 10-year-old Damilola was found bleeding to death yards from his front door last Monday, police patrolled the streets and appealed for fresh witnesses to the killing to come forward. As they did so, Richard Taylor, the dead boy’s father, and other members of the family made an emotional visit to the stairwell where his son died. A weeping Mr Taylor, who flew into Britain on Friday, cried out “Oh my God, oh my God, my beautiful, beautiful boy” before leaving flowers at the scene. The 10-year-old died from a severed artery in his leg after he was attacked with a bottle or a knife on the North Peckham estate in south-east London. Earlier on Saturday, police renewed their appeal for witnesses to the crime and showed a silver puffa jacket identical to the one worn by Damilola on the evening he was stabbed. Detectives have now spoken to a boy and a girl who were filmed with Damilola on CCTV going into a library for an after-school computer class. The two children, who are not suspects, were asked what their friend was saying in the hour before his death.Police are exploring the possibility that Damilola was followed from the library by his attackers.

According to the CA, more detailed labelling – quantitative ingredient declarations (QUID) should be introduced by Europe as soon as possible, and definitions for simple terms such as “meat” tidied up.The managing editor of Which? magazine Charlotte Gann said today: “Consumers have long had to cope with foods which aren’t all they seem.”But food adulteration has now become more sophisticated than ever before – and is harder to detect and prove.”The law has to be tightened up. In 1994 licensees at a pub in Humberside faced fines of pounds 2,500 for stocking adulterated drinks after trading standards officers found brands of whisky diluted by 12 and 13 per cent water. The Food Safety Act, the Trades Description Act, the Consumer Protection Act and the Weights and Measures Act all aim to protect consumers by making it an offence to describe food in a misleading way.But the association says that legislation is not comprehensive enough and is subject to different interpretations. It wants tinned products to give clear indication of drained weights, and says that added water should be declared. And some market traders were selling turkey meat as chicken.Meat often caused problems – in the United Kingdom “meat” can mean the flesh along with fat, skin, rind, gristle and sinew.
The word “ham” can be used for a food which contains other ingredients. It may be highly processed and contain substances such as soya and milk protein.Food was not alone in causing problems. “Halal” meat also contained pork, which eventually led to a pounds 15,000 fine. The birds were being sold for twice the price of frozen poultry – and could have been a health hazard if frozen again. Also in Sheffield, 13 out of 54 samples of “minced beef” contained other meat such as lamb and pork. And a check by trading standards officers in Durham in May 1995 showed that 10 out of 11 pizzas examined contained up to 95 per cent of a substitute “cheese” made of skimmed milk and vegetable oil.In Sheffield, a public analyst bought 16 “fresh” turkeys from shops or markets and found that five had been frozen. Cheese pizzas that contain no cheese, “fresh” turkeys that have been frozen and “chicken” which contains pork are just three of the ways in which consumers are being ripped off by food producers, according to a new survey.
The Consumers’ Association reveals today that food producers are skimping on expensive ingredients by mixing them or swapping them with cheaper ones.Labelling can also mislead consumers – food mentioned in the product name is not always being contained in any quantity in the packet. In four government studies, 95 out of 874 samples of breaded scampi, battered fish products, instant coffees or vegetable oils were thought to be illegally adulterated or falsely described.

The Vikings will be watching the playoffs from home, like most of us, the Brett Favre experience will be a failure (no time to get his passes off or in rhythm with his receivers) and the defense will continue to lose games when they have the talent to win.

By June this year Vodafone had grabbed 32 per cent of the digital mobile market with 26 per cent for Orange and Cellnet trailing on 22 per cent. Analysts have pointed to risks for both Cellnet and Mercury One- 2-One, which has 20 per cent of the digital market, if they fall behind the two front-runners in the digital revolution.A spokesman for Cellnet was unavailable for comment yesterday.. The Government has said all analogue phone customers should move to digital by 2005. It’s patently untrue to say it is bad for service providers’ business. In fact, it’s quite the reverse, because customers could switch networks without changing their service provider.”The letter, from Richard Davis, Cellnet’s head of channel sales, encloses a copy of the company’s response to the Oftel consultation paper. In the document Cellnet argues customers are not interested in keeping their mobile number when changing network: “Customers in general do not perceive their mobile numbers to be of particular value.” It concludes: “The benefits of mobile portability would not outweigh the cost of implementation.”Cellnet has 41 per cent of the total mobile phone market but has slipped behind Vodafone and Orange in the fast expanding digital business. Paul Franklin, Orange’s director of regulatory affairs, said: “Cellnet is using whatever tactics it can to delay number portability.
service providers introducing number portability will need to introduce new business processes as well as modifying billing and administration systems to enable a customer to move networks while taking their number with them.”It concludes with criticism of Oftel: “Given the impact on [service providers'] business the introduction of number portability will have, we believe Oftel should have asked service providers for their views.”Yesterday Orange attacked the claims made in the letter. The regulator hopes to finalise plans and give a specific time-scale by the end of this year. Supporters of the concept see the lack of number portability as a crucial obstacle to the development of competition.Cellnet’s letter, dated 18 June, says number portability is “being pushed by Orange”. It suggests it will be bad for service providers’ businesses. It continues: “Oftel does not appear to have requested comments from service providers, even though the implications of number portability will have consequences for both your customers and your systems … The extent of the lobbying effort was revealed in a letter Cellnet has sent to service providers, the retailers which buy wholesale air time from mobile networks and sell it to the public. Orange, the digital mobile company, is preparing a formal complaint to the industry regulator, Oftel, about what it claims are Cellnet’s deliberate delaying tactics.
The introduction of number portability for fixed phone lines is already under way and Oftel is consulting with the industry on how to bring in mobile number portability.
Today’s edition of Roof, Shelter’s housing magazine, predicts that the housing market is poised for a boom that could need to be dampened, although probably not before the election.”Whoever wins the election may well face a housing market working its old inflationary magic,” it says.Mr Barty agrees: “If the market continues to recover with the same momentum the Government will have to act at some time next year.” Figures from both Halifax and Nationwide building societies last week confirmed that house prices are climbing at an average annualised rate of 5-10 per cent.. Cellnet, the mobile telephone network jointly owned by BT and Securicor, has launched a behind-the-scenes campaign to try to prevent the introduction of mobile number portability, where customers can change networks but keep their existing number. It confirms that the biggest and fastest reaction occurs in construction and sectors linked to the housing market. The research found that a fall of just over 1 percentage point in interest rates would lead to a rise in manufacturing output of nearly 2 per cent after just over two years, with a bigger reaction in construction and related industries. There is clear evidence that these parts of the economy are responding to the four reductions in interest rates since December. “Sustaining low inflation will require cautious policies,” he says.Marian Bell at the Royal Bank of Scotland said yesterday: “There is no reason for the Bank of England to have changed its view since May.” Although the short-term prospects for inflation are very favourable, the upturn in manufacturing, strong retail sales and sterling’s decline from its level two months ago would all concern the Bank’s economists, she said.An article to be published in the Bank’s Quarterly Bulletin on Wednesday assesses how quickly changes in interest rates affect different sectors of the economy.
“The Chancellor believes this is compatible with sustained low inflation – we do not,” writes economist James Barty.Barclays Bank’s chief economist, Alan Davies, predicts that base rates will have to climb from their current 5.75 per cent level to 7.5 per cent next year. We could be seeing fireworks by January.”His new report compares the state of the economy with the same point in the Maudling, Barber and Lawson booms. Although the economy has had less stimulus from interest rate cuts in the 1990s, the Government’s fiscal policy has been much looser. A clutch of new forecasts published today predict that the economy is picking up fast enough to put upward pressure on inflation and interest rates.According to David Mackie, UK economist at the investment bank JP Morgan, “We are in for the sort of mini-boom which is likely to make the Governor very, very nervous about the inflation target.

RON ATKINSON says he has no regrets after announcing he will retire from management at the end of the season, following Nottingham Forest’s relegation. “Everything must come to an end eventually and this seems as good a time as any,” he said. Atkinson revealed his decision after Forest’s 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa on Saturday sent them back to the Nationwide League. Mark Draper scored on the stroke of half-time with a backward header from Alan Wright’s well- placed free-kick.
Gareth Barry, who replaced Dion Dublin at half-time, scored 12 minutes after the break when he latched on to a curling cross from the former Forest player, Steve Stone. It was the young defender’s first goal in senior football.
“It was not pretty stuff, and you could say that we dragged Nottingham Forest down to our level today,” the Villa manager, John Gregory, said after the game.Atkinson, who was brought in at the start of the year to try to rescue Forest’s Premiership campaign, said he would not change anything in his long coaching career. “I’ve enjoyed every minute of it, and there have been more ups than downs,” he said “The Forest experience hasn’t soured my taste for football. In fact, my zest is as powerful as ever.”I have to remind myself I’m that old, because most days I think I’m still 32,” he added in typical jocular fashion. “It would have been nice to bow out at the top, but you can’t pick and choose the moment.
But it was always going to be an uphill struggle here and the climb was a lot tougher than I imagined.”Atkinson will see out his managerial career with three more games with Forest; the first next Saturday at another of his former clubs, Sheffield Wednesday. After that, his media career will take up most of his time.Forest will take their time choosing a successor, with their former player Stuart Pearce sure to be a contender.Goals: Draper (45) 0-1; Barry (57) 0-2.Aston Villa: Oakes; Watson (Ehiogu, 72), Calderwood, Southgate, Wright, Stone (Delaney, 83), Draper, Taylor, Merson, Dublin (Barry, h-t), Joachim. THE VALUE of organic consumables sold in the UK has increased sixfold in a decade, and is expected to be worth pounds 500m by next year. Wine makes up an insignificant portion of that figure, and I’m not surprised It takes a lot of determination to go certifiably organic. You have to make the transition gradually, and end up in complete conformance with the labelling laws and certification standards that apply where you (a) make and (b) sell your wines.
If you disagree with the standards, and there are legitimate areas of disagreement, tough luck. I’m often asked what organic wine is, and whether it’s better than non- organic. The second question is easy: organic methods will not by themselves make better wine. Quality depends on skill in growing grapes and vinifying them; the job can be done well with chemical inputs It can also be done badly The first question is much more complex. An organic wine is any wine whose makers are allowed by law, and by the local certifying body, to call it by that name But EU laws differ from American laws. The winemaking countries of Europe have several organisations, each with different standards, that certify producers and (in theory) monitor their production. And some of the best producers using organic methods (such as Mas de Daumas Gassac in Herault and Domaine de Trevallon in Provence) operate outside certification systems.
It’s all a bit of a mess.
A good new book by Monty Waldin, The Organic Wine Guide (Thorsons, pounds 8.99), sets out to provide guidance for the organically perplexed. It’s genuinely useful, especially in explaining the basics and as a shopping guide. Waldin does not make extravagant claims: he sure as hell doesn’t think that all organic producers make good wine. And he elucidates the mysterious regimes of Biodynamics, an offshoot of organics that sounds like moonshine but produces some great wine. Or you might prefer to put your nine quid towards the cost of Jancis Robinson’s Oxford Companion to Wine (pounds 40), which has just been published in a new edition.
Matters of organicity are dealt with here in all their complexity, and with a well-informed scepticism that’s preferable to waving the green flag.If you’re serious about investigating the possibilities of organic wine, the best places to go are the mail order specialists Vintage Roots (0118 976 1999) and Vinceremos (0113 257 7545). But please remember that you’re not necessarily buying better quality. Think about the flavours in the glass, not just the residues. Here’s a small sampler of good organics to come my way recently. Majestic’s new list sticks a green triangle next to each organic wine, which go up to the outstanding Chassagne-Montrachets from Fontaine-Gagnard (from pounds 19- pounds 24). More affordably, their Sauvignon de Touraine 1998, Domaine des Maisons Brulees (pounds 4.99) is a grassy quaffing wine of velvety texture. California’s Fetzer is the most widely distributed of organic wineries, and their Bonterra Viognier 1998, North Coast (pounds 9.99, Oddbins) is a complex, peachily appetising example of the grape.
All their wines are good, especially the Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon.Even more worth it, but only if you store the bottle for a good few years, is Chateauneuf-du-Pape “La Bernardine” 1997, Chapoutier (pounds 17.95, Waitrose). There’s some discussion about how closely this inconsistent house adheres to organic principles, but who cares? This wine’s massive, closed, exceptional – expensive but not overpriced. Another five years should show what it’s really made of.I have to admit that the whole issue of organic wine seems a bit of a red herring. Do I want to drink wine that’s loaded with pesticide residues? Of course not.
