Was there an American editor at work? The supernatural takes the form, in a comfortingly old-fashioned way, of a genie in a bottle in The Blue Bottle Mystery by Kathy Hoopmann (Jessica Kingsley, £7.99.) This is a slight book, as wispy as the smoke that Ben and his friend Andy keep seeing at key moments, but it has a serious purpose which it wears lightly.Ben, baffling to everyone as much for his extreme mathematical intelligence as his repetitive movements and his very literal interpretation of language, has – it turns out – Asperger’s syndrome That is one solution to the mystery. It’s the first venture into fiction by this publisher, which has cornered a niche market in literature on Asperger’s and autism. The next in the series, Of Mice and Aliens, will be published later this month. It works even better as a story, with the addition of an even more literally-minded alien called Zeke. The supernatural in Carlo Gebler’s Caught on a Train (Mammoth, £4.99) serves an entirely different purpose, placed as it is in the context of a well-crafted historical story.
This book is honestly derivative: Gebler acknowledges the three magical Irish folk tales, which Archie, a cook’s boy on the train from Dublin in 1899, is asked to judge. They are interwoven into a spellbinding story in which the contest is not as simple as it seems. After all this, it is oddly reassuring to turn to the straightforward setting of a Dick King-Smith farmyard. His Funny Frank (Doubleday, £10.99) is the story of a chick who would rather be a duckling and is helped to achieve his desire by a wetsuit made from an old hot water bottle. This may seem implausible, but not nearly as much as the fact that the mother has time to make fruit scones for tea on a regular basis Now, that really is fantastic.. The nation and the world,” wrote Dr Martin Luther King Jr in his celebrated 1963 “Letter From Birmingham Jail”, “are in dire need of creative extremists.” Guy Debord, founder and philosopher-king of the Situationist International, may not have been precisely what Dr King had in mind, but the description fits him as well as any other.
The Situationists were the master sloganeers of the May 1968 uprising in Paris; they were a primary influence on Malcolm McLaren, who embedded a gleeful homage to their techniques and tactics in his propaganda for the Sex Pistols, and their concept of d?urnement – the subverting of pop-culture imagery by contradictory texts – finds its echo in the “culture-jamming” of anti-capitalist art terrorists. The Situationists were cultural terrorists. It was unfortunate for them that they were often confused with real ones. (A wealthy Italian publisher friend of Debord’s did, however, have a “secret life” in the armed wing of the struggle. His crusade to abolish his class came to an abrupt end when a bomb he was working on exploded, and he merely abolished himself.) Their paradoxical, provocative slogans and pronouncements were designed as weapons to destabilise intellectual rigidity and force others to think outside the box.
“Be realistic,” they insisted, “demand the impossible”.
There were very few of them; they mostly hated one another; and they all revolved around Guy Debord. As was appropriate for a group of artists who reached Marx via Surrealism (with, in Debord’s case, Lettrism and Dada not far behind) and led by a man who acquired much of his Marxism the same way Marx did, from Hegel, they were prone to splits and expulsions. This tendency played itself out only once Debord had expelled everyone except himself and one other, who was then deported. Which left one.Debord’s defining contribution to 20th-century thought is embodied in the subject of his dense, sparkling 1967 polemical analysis, The Society of the Spectacle. The spectacle of the title is not simply the media, but almost all culture and debate. “Quite simply,” wrote Debord, “the spectacle’s domination has succeeded in raising a whole generation moulded to its laws.”In other words: capitalism’s most appalling crime is the manner in which it has colonised our collective unconscious. The tract is made up of 221 numbered paragraphs occupying 154 pages; if it had been written in the discursive prose beloved of Marx and Engels, it would probably have been as long as Capital.
As it is, the more appropriate comparison would be with The Communist Manifesto, except that for Debord, in the words of another Situationist slogan, “the commodity is the opium of the people.”In what Jon Savage describes (in his virtuoso punk exegesis England’s Dreaming) as “a brilliant collage of avant-garde art, Marxist theory and existential obnoxiousness,” Debord and the Situationists struck out with “manifestos, broadsheets, montages, pranks, disinformation.” Daniel Cohn-Bendit, the activist formerly known as Dany The Red, may have been the public face of les ?nements of May ‘68, but – despite being the smallest and least well-organised of the various factions – the Situationists proved the most influential in terms of defining the moment. They uttered the Big No, and Debord was their glittering theoretical wing: “The aggressor is not the one who rebels but the one who upholds authority.”Guy Debord was born in 1931 into a family on the point of ceasing to be wealthy. A bullying stepfather unwittingly instilled in him a profound anti-authoritarian sensibility which led him towards the transgressive: first in literature – Goth Boy, of course -– then in art and, finally, in politics. The primacy of anti-authoritarianism as a governing principle guided him through the worlds of avant-garde art, and the politics of the salon and the street. The Society of the Spectacle demonstrates his mastery of modern Marxism (the section “The Proletariat as Subject and Representation” is as penetrating a Marxist critique of Bolshevik-Leninism in theory and practice as one could hope to read) but, ultimately, Debord was not a Marxist. He recognised that early Marxism provided a uniquely powerful and flexible set of intellectual tools, perfectly suited for attacking the targets he had in his sights, and he used them brilliantly, but he was not necessarily committed to them.
These would make it a criminal offence for someone in a position of authority to have sex with a young person in their care in four cases: youth detention centres, local authority care, nursing care and full-time education. In this, Jack Straw is going too far. As his former Home Office minister, Alun Michael, pointed out last year, it would mean it was lawful for teachers to marry their pupils but not to have sex with them. The Liberal Democrats should be congratulated for standing up for liberal values. The Sexual Offences Bill received its second reading in the House of Commons a week ago. In response to a spasm of anti-gay prejudice against the equal age of consent for homosexual men, the Home Secretary foolishly introduced provisions against the “abuse of trust” in cases where older people have responsibility for 16- or 17-year-olds, whether of the same or the opposite sex. Of course, sex with pupils under the age of 16 is both wrong and a criminal offence, and Mr Woodhead prefaced his controversial words by saying so.
As for sex with pupils aged 16 or 17, he said that adults “have a responsibility to those who are younger than us and therefore it isn’t a good idea at all”. He should have gone further, and said that the presumption must be that it is a sacking offence. But he was quite right to suggest that each case should be judged individually, and that an erring teacher should not be “automatically drummed out of the profession”.In this, and, despite his disclaimer that he had “no problem” with the Government’s Bill to ban sex between teachers and pupils, his explosive comments perform a valuable service by drawing attention to a bad law in the making. If that were all he had meant, of course, he would not be in so much trouble, and the story would not have been on the front page of this newspaper last Saturday. What he meant was that something positive could come out of such relationships, and it was on this that he was forced to go back yesterday. Which was inevitable, because the man in charge of maintaining standards of teaching should not, as a matter of policy, express anything other than prim disapproval of teacher-pupil relationships.
But, though it is for others to say it, what he said remains true.
It can be educative in the sense that both bank and burglar can learn something from a robbery. A SEXUAL relationship between a teacher and a 16- or 17-year-old pupil can indeed be “educative” for all concerned, as Chris Woodhead, the Chief Schools Inspector, said. Sir: The failure to investigate fully the extent of benefits fraud (“MPs defy Darling over benefit fraud”, 5 February) prompts me to report another instance. Last year, at one of London’s highest-profile fringe venues, I organised an evening of new sitcoms Not a single commissioning editor came. In addition, while the US may produce some excellent programmes, it also produces an ocean of dross. It is our fortune that we only see the few shows which float to the top of this vast reservoir of effluent.
Frankly it is scandalous that, instead of being able to trust their own judgement and feed new British writers a few hundred pounds of seed corn money to develop an initial script, ITV companies prefer to let our ideas rot in favour of spending a fortune on patronising, second-hand advice.I could, at the drop of a hat, produce a list of new home-grown writers with original ideas and genuine ability, all of whom have proved themselves in live comedy, radio, or smaller scale TV. Britain has a proud tradition of original comedies driven by one or two writers, some of them even transferring successfully to the home of “guru” Tom Carsey. Until Mr Blunkett addresses this, it scarcely matters whether he offers the kids penny whistles or bagpipes. Electronic keyboards and computers will not, of themselves, make music lessons creative.
MALCOLM ROSSDartington, Devon.
Sir: ITV’s recruitment of a “US sitcom guru” (report, 4 February) is their latest insult to home-grown comedy writers and an implicit admission of the failure of the network’s own commissioning staff. The reason is the Government’s failure to supply enough half-decent music teachers able (and allowed) to engage the latent enthusiasm of their students. I would be happy to show him round.Councillor DAVID SULLIVANLeaderLewisham CouncilLondon SE6. Sir: The pother about musical instruments in schools (leader, 5 February) entirely misses the point.

If they had, the Everton manager would surely have given up his pursuit of Fabrizio Ravanelli and offloaded the beleaguered Nick Barmby. Finally, if anyone can throw light on Stockport’s unique motto, which describes them as “The Friendly Football Club”, don’t expect it to be ex-managers Dave Jones and Danny Bergara. The former was recently snubbed by the club he led to promotion and Coca Cola Cup renown last season when they refused to stock his book in the club shop, while Stockport’s parting gift to Bergara, who had taken them to two play-off finals and two Autoglass Trophy finals, was a punch on the head from chairman Brendan Elwood No prizes for guessing the motto of that story.. There was certainly no sign of Bruce Rioch and Arsenal’s board of directors paying any heed to the Highbury motto Victoria Concordia Crescit (Victory comes through Agreement) when they came to blows, nor is there any evidence to suggest that anyone at Everton has thought to remind Howard Kendall that Nil Satis Nisi Optimum (Only the Best is Good Enough) at Goodison.
Okay, so Chesterfield may continually “aspire” to greater heights – witness their performance in reaching the semi finals of the FA Cup last season – while Kilmarnock could do worse than take heart from their motto Confidemus (Let us have Confidence) when they try to overcome the 3-1 first leg deficit against Nice in the Cup- Winners’ cup.But try telling Burnley, currently propping up the Second Division that “work is the reason and the reward”; or that it’s all about “progress” to Blackpool, who haven’t escaped the clutches of the Second Division for five years. They were enraged by the club’s choice of new crest and motto, claiming that the crest is too similar to Newcastle’s and that the motto – Connectatio Excellentiae (In Search of Excellence) – was simply plucked, without thought, from the pages of a Latin dictionary. After rumours suggesting it was borrowed from a local Gateshead bus company proved to be unfounded, a local paper acted as a forum for fans’ personal preferences, which range from the angry (Let’s Shaft the Fans) to the more pragmatic (In Search of Promotion).Being realistic, it’s doubtful that a motto has any bearing whatsoever on a club’s performance these days. Any Spurs fan would concede that “Things can only get better” might be a more appropriate maxim. But then fans are seldom canvassed on issues such as mottoes, as Sunderland fans know only too well. But if we’re picking holes in club mottoes, then Spurs has to take the biscuit.
As the erstwhile enfant terrible of the ENO, David Alden famously split the house by turning Tchaikovsky’s `Mazeppa’ into a chainsaw massacre. “All I Wanna Do” is impressively resurrected as southern boogie and Crow rides home triumphantly with the country gospel of “I Shall Believe”, a brief snatch of The Who and a promising tight new rocker, “It Don’t Hurt”.A change would do her better.. Crow gives her band a sideways glance but has the grace to put some fire into what remains of her performance. An element of football’s enduring appeal for its followers will always be its changeability – this could be our year; ah, well, there’s always next time. Probably no fixture illustrates better how fortunes can turn around, for better and worse from one season to the next than tonight’s Champions’ League match between Juventus and Manchester United in the Stadio delle Alpi in Turin.
At the beginning of last season, United were thoroughly outclassed by Juventus, fortunate indeed to be only a goal down after a torrid first half. With enigmatic timing and the uncanny presence of Stepford fans, this surge forward – undertaken rather as an appeal, it seems, than in support of their heroine – finally kickstarts the evening. In a trickle at first and soon in their hundreds, those sitting at the back of the National Indoor Arena politely sweep past the protesting stewards and make their way into the stalls.
As if to make it unequivocal, Crow’s 1996 album shed the vestiges of its predecessor’s crispness and indulged Crow’s eye for frazzled low-lifers.It comes as no surprise then that the languorous on stage tonight seems to be living the “Eat sleep lie die record label” life she once declared was too high a price to pay for stardom. Sluggishly alternating between guitar, keyboards, mouth organ and accordion, Crow thoroughly bemuses an enthusiastic audience by ploughing through her second album on auto. It’s hard to tell who’s being more encouraging though, the thirtysomething men who’ve come to bathe in Crow’s laid back charms or the nieces they’ve brought as a handy pretext. Then, halfway through “Everyday is a Winding Road”, Sheryl’s well-behaved Birmingham fans do something quite extraordinary. By far Crow’s most upbeat track, in fact, “All I Wanna Do” lightened its melancholic lyric with irresistible guitar hooks, in the process drawing ears from “What Can I Do For You’s” portrait of music executive sleazeballs and the plaintive stoicism of “We Do What We Can” and its dead end jazz player. This is, of course, a rock-and-roll truism as is her antagonism towards the music press: early media probing busied itself with the bitter fallout of the first album’s complex joint writing credits and her alleged fling with Eric Clapton last year. It was, nevertheless, startlingly frank of Crow to admit in recent publicity to being lonelier now than she’s ever been.
Compare that then with her recent frantic mugging: , Tommy Hilfiger girl; , National Lottery Show celeb; , James Bond diva. Quite what audience she feels she’s reaching by associating herself with WASP preppies Mr Blobby and Shirley Bassey is anyone’s guess. If there is reason behind Crow’s gruelling but muddleheaded networking schedule, “Factory Girl”, the song which the Crow and her band take first to the stage every night provides dim illumination. The Rolling Stones’ paean to toiling, downtrodden women both illustrates the canonical rock tastes of a songwriter imbued with the PR free ideals of the sixties and Crow’s avowed belief in the “head down” work ethic.Following her move to LA from the backwaters of Missouri in the eighties, Crow’s years as a backing singer to the likes of Rod Stewart, Don Henley and Michael Jackson provided Tuesday Night Music Club with its bleak vision, particular its derision of the music industry. Since her first hit, the breezy guitar chugger “All I Wanna Do” went supernova back in early 1995, never more than now has Crow seemed to want the relative anonymity of the Tuesday Night Music Club, the communal jamming sessions that gave her first album its folksy name. The covers of her eight million selling debut and its eponymously titled follow-up (four million and counting) tell their own story: from the honest-to-goodness typography and all-American girl that adorns Tuesday Night Music Club to the kidnap note lettering and sepia introvert that sits uncomfortably on .Over that time Crow’s personal happiness seems to have been in inverse proportion to her career success.
In the world of 90s showbiz, where personalities expand to fill the media space available, seems to have a slow puncture. As theological dialogue, it’s kindergarten stuff, but given the lumpen doggedness of most of the show, it does beg one nagging question: “Does anyone believe in ?”Pop music, like nature, abhors a vacuum. 3,500 Brummies return the greeting with their best Grand Ole Opry House cheer, spurring the 35-year-old ex-teacher, , into – no, not music – some Q&A.”Does anyone here believe in angels?” she wonders abstractedly, before enquiring after our faith in UFOs and Elvis Presley. Their horses populate the top Flat training centres, and a large- scale cut-back would trigger a major crisis in the industry, not least of which would be extensive unemployment..

He was just five days short of his 26th birthday that night though he looked younger, clambering out of the studio car, his baby face rocking with laughter on top of the very large body. He was exhausted and overweight; he had a habit of double helpings just to keep going. Like a boy infatuated with his own occasion, he took a beautiful woman to the opening, Dolores del Rio, 10 years his senior But Orson Welles always had ideas above his station.
No, it was more than that: he was without station, home or base. Like any real genius, he existed already nowhere else but in history.
It was 1 May 1941, at the RKO Palace at Broadway and 47th Street in New York City the opening night of Citizen Kane. Sixty years ago, and still opening people’s minds. If he had dropped dead that night, he would have been secure for ever in the meagre 20th-century company of Einstein, Hitler and Picasso. As they still do, people would have marvelled that Welles had made Kane at 25. As they did then, they would have stood back, daunted by the sheer amount the fat kid had accomplished already.
As it was, he lived another 44 years time for boredom, disappointment and the merely magnificent to catch up with him. So, in his old age, and after his death, there were those who said: “Well, yes, Orson Welles is all very well, but isn’t he rather shallow, a touch excessive isn’t he just a little bit of a ham and a charlatan?” As if that hadn’t been his point, his vision, his ecstatic sense of himself. So, if he had popped off that night, we wouldn’t have had The Magnificent Ambersons, or his Harry Lime in The Third Man. There’d be no Chimes at Midnight or F for Fake, no Othello, Macbeth or Mr Arkadin No Touch of Evil. The world would never have seen his Moby Dick on stage, or his magic act in which he sawed Marlene Dietrich in two.
They’d never have had to look into his taunting eyes as he waxed eloquent on this packet mashed potato or that cheap wine. There would be this huge, voluminous hole, like a Monet pond without the lilies.Still, I can’t quite give up the dream that he had a splendid heart attack at the back of the Palace Theatre, engaging with Miss del Rio in the last row of the stalls: anything not to see the damn movie again! He was weary of Citizen Kane, you see. He was proud of it, I’m sure, and later on in life he would offer the opinion no more than ex cathedra that it had not been surpassed yet. Perhaps he entertained the dream that, as and when someone matched it, he would go back to real work. No, he was stale on Citizen Kane because of the intensity of attention and longing with which he had brought it into being. You can still feel that love (even if you call it self-love), like a heart beating in the screen. But he wanted something fresh boredom was always one of his companions. So it’s worth stressing that he went to the New York premiere and then followed his movie around (taking Dolores with him).

At the time, he turned them down, preferring to wait and see if he could guide Wycombe to a second successive promotion.Nevertheless he and George remained on good terms. Significantly in yesterday’s match programme O’Neill gave a hint of the working problems he saw at Norwich. Commenting on McGhee’s situation at Leicester and before his departure from Norwich, O’Neill said: “It was not as if he had a fall- out with the board, it was not as if he was at loggerheads with the chairman in terms of not being able to do what he wanted.”In fact looking at the club from afar it looked as if he was given the freedom to run the club how he wanted and I’m sure the club was healthier because of that.”Walker said later: “As far as I’m concerned nothing has changed. I have read that I was favourite for the job but it was news to me. I was told to expect a decision on Tuesday or Wednesday and I presume that’s still the case.”Does Martin O’Neill’s resignation have an impact on the Leicester situation? It may well do, but that’s for him to say.”George, the Leicester chairman, refused to make any comment throughout the day.O’Neill’s assistant, Paul Franklin, was hastily put in charge of the Canaries, who put their problems aside by taking the lead in 65 seconds through Darren Eadie. Walker had been interviewed for the job on Friday and was at the ground yesterday in his role as a television summariser.O’Neill was approached by Leicester a year ago in the wake of Brian Little’s defection to Aston Villa.
His two-year contract still has 18 months to run.” Chase later added he was “shocked and disappointed” by O’Neill’s decision saying: “I was aware on Saturday that he was unhappy.”During a dramatic afternoon at Filbert Street rumours spread that the Leicester chairman, Martin George, was meeting O’Neill after the game, but they were unsubstantiated. All of which was news to the former Norwich manager Mike Walker, who had been hoping the occasion would see his appointment as McGhee’s successor. He was angry when his efforts to sign the former Hull goalscorer, Dean Windass, for pounds 750,000 were denied. Chase in turn was furious that his authority was being questioned through the local media.A Norwich statement issued just before yesterday’s game said: “We regret to announce that team manager Martin O’Neill has today tendered his resignation which is not being accepted. O’Neill tendered his resignation, which has been refused, to the Norwich chairman Robert Chase at 11.30 yesterday morning and would appear to be set now to be installed at Filbert Street as the successor to Mark McGhee.
A week ago McGhee also tore up his contract to become the new manager at Wolves.
The surprise move followed weeks of disharmony between manager and chairman over O’Neill’s desire to improve his promotion-challenging squad. Leicester staged a thrilling recovery to beat Norwich yesterday and are poised now to take their manager as well after Martin O’Neill walked out on the East Anglian club before the game. Ed Swiderski said “we’re clearly being targeted because we’re happy.”
I can think back to when I was younger, and my favorite (and most clear) memory is driving down the road in my dad’s old pickup truck listening to Duke of Earl, as music engrains itself into my memory, offering me a lifetime of happiness.Likewise, I can remember sitting on his lap when I was about the same age, asking all sorts of questions about baseball and hockey perhaps not the smartest questions, but dad sat through it all and answered them, again offering me an indelible memory.Music and sport have become so commercialized, mainstream, overdone, or whatever term you’d like to use, that we often overlook what they offer us as people. Whether or not that basket goes in, the kick goes wide, or the puck crosses the line though, we’ll hold on to those memories because despite how silly the concept seems from afar, these are the memories that will last.Sport may not transcend life (although with some people it does), but there’s a switch flipped somewhere in the mind of human beings at important moments that helps us hold on to the memories so we remember what happens, and more importantly, who we’re with.. As the Yankees won their seventh straight victory today, Joba Chamberlain had what may have been his best performance as a starting pitcher.
However, he was pulled from the game with two outs in the sixth inning in a 1-1 tie.Joe Girardi was quoted as saying, “Your heart wants to do it, but your head tells you that you need to make a change.” Chamberlain had just struck out the last two batters he faced He showed no signs of tiring. It is ridiculous that the Yankees are treating Chamberlain with kid gloves. He is 22 years old, and is probably the strongest pitcher on the Yankees staff He was a starter in the minors. It would be more understandable if he was groomed as a reliever and is making his first starts in the majors This is not the case. The Yankees are being too protective. Joe Girardi needs to give Chamberlain the opportunity to pitch seven innings in a game (if he is pitching well). Although it isprevalent in all of baseball, the Yankees in particular continue to baby all pitchers.Baseball has created these unwritten rules that pitchers cannot throw more than 100 pitches in a game. In 1983, Ron Guidry had 21 complete games for the Yankees. In 2008, the team will be lucky if they have three complete games on the whole pitching staff.Ron Guidry pitched 15 years in the majors and never had any arm trouble. Joba Chamberlain is the latest example of a young pitcher who cannot show his full talent By the way, the Yankees won today 2-1.
They scored their second run in the bottom of the sixth. If Chamberlain had been allowed to finish the sixth inning, he would have been credited with a win Another no-decision for Joba It will continue as long as he has a leash on.. The USA Men’s Basketball Olympic rosters come out on Monday. Everyone should be excited! Even with the 2007 USA team playing very well, it is unlikely that everyone on that team will be called back for the 2008 Olympic team. Chauncey Billups already dropped out, meaning that we know that there’s going to be at least one person different on the team. I can’t help but think of who might be added on. Guaranteed players to make the team include: Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony, Lebron James, Jason Kidd, and probably Dwight Howard, Amare Stoudemire, and Chris Paul. That leaves us with five players fighting for spots. Candidates include: Brad Miller, Chris Bosh, Tayshaun Prince, Adam Morrison, Luke Ridnour, Antawn Jamison, Dwyane Wade, JJ Redick, Shawn Marion, Elton Brand, Lamar Odom, Shane Battier, Paul Pierce, Michael Redd, Tyson Chandler, Joe Johnson, Mike Miller, Bruce Bowen, Deron Williams, and Gilbert Arenas. Let’s just pretend that Chris Bosh, Paul Pierce, Shane Battier, and Deron Williams make it. That leaves one lucky soul for the last remaining spot. Now, let’s compare this team so far with the legendary 1992 Dream Team. Michael Jordan = Kobe BryantKarl Malone = Carmelo AnthonyClyde Drexler = Lebron JamesMagic Johnson = Jason KiddDavid Robinson = Dwight HowardCharles Barkley = Amare StoudemireScottie Pippen = Chris PaulPatrick Ewing = Chris BoshJohn Stockton = Deron WilliamsLarry Bird = Paul PierceChris Mullin = Shane BattierChristian Laettner = ???????? Now who should be compared to lucky Laettner? From that list of candidates, only one name seems to stands out.
Adam Morrison. Now, let me explain before you close this article A team needs its superstars and its role players. I know that Team USA is trying to find role players such as Mike Miller, Michael Redd, and Tyson Chandler from the 2007 team. But, seriously, those aren’t your typical “role players.” Each of them and almost everyone else on the candidate’s list are all stars in each of their NBA teams Well, everyone but Luke Ridnour and JJ Redick. I didn’t pick Ridnour to be on this team because the team already has three superstar point guards in Kidd, Paul, and Williams. And, I also didn’t pick Redick because he…well…he just sucks. Now, if the USA team wants to return to its glory days of 1992, they should put on a player like Adam Morrison. Put a real role player on the team. An all star might say he will take a role position, but we all know inside he thinks he’s the best Sometimes too much talent might backfire.
Just look at the 2000-2006 Olympic teams. For those who didn’t read the paragraph above, let me explain to you using simple math: 2= IIpeanut butter = jellycrocodile = alligatorme = amazing Christian Laettner = Adam Morrison For the final roster spot on team USA, Mike Krzyzewski should choose Adam Morrison if they really want to win gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. There are two reasons that I can think of that Krzyzewski would not choose Morrison For one, Morrison is coming off a horrible knee injury. And, secondly, Morrison plays for the Charlotte Bobcats and they pretty much breed of UNC players. But, I can guarantee you that if Morrison was put on the 2008 Olympic team, the USA would definitely win gold. The only thing standing in their way is my favorite team, China National team.. I know it’s June and the closest thing to football we have to look forward to is the OTAs and training camps…but…it is never to early to look at how the draft and free agency has affected your favorite team, and take a look at who will make the playoffs come year’s endIn part 2 of my column, here is who I think will make the playoffs in each of the divisions in the NFC, along with the wild cards. NFC SOUTHTampa Bay BuccaneersAfter a 2006 where the Buc’s defense ranked 17th in total defense, Tampa Bay showed the league why they are still to be feared, pulling in second in total defense in 2007.Jeff Garcia showed that veterans can still play the game, and play it well.
I feel so much better – it’s given me the confidence I need to carry on. and Sean feature in `Fat Free’, a documentary series about dieting and body image, on Thursdays at 8.30pm on BBC1.. Then I got back and thought, “Why waste it all, now I’ve put in so much effort?” So I was determined to go back after Christmas. I ended up going to bed just to escape the temptation.I knew I was going to break it when I went on holiday a few weeks after I started I put on eight pounds in two months. I also loved those all-day breakfasts, chips and Scottish meat pies.I wouldn’t say my weight has affected the relationship, except for the fact that I was pretty miserable when I first started the diet I did get very grumpy and it could be quite upsetting I’m not a nice person when I have a craving for something.
You get lazy and eat through boredom – I’m definitely a chocoholic. I’d think, “Can I bear to go for this job interview? Will they think I’m a fat couch potato?”I didn’t notice how bad I looked until last year; I caught sight of myself in the mirror and suddenly thought to myself, “You’ve got to be joking.” And that’s when I decided to do something about it.Another reason is that and I really want to have a baby and I know we’d have a much better chance if I were slimmer.I started eating a lot more when I became a lorry driver. I wouldn’t say I lost my confidence because of my weight gain, but it certainly put a cloud over it. Others are there because they can’t get girlfriends.I feel, like a lot of the men, that nobody pays much attention to you when you’re fat. I’ve come out openly and I wish other men would be more honest about it.
Most of the guys at my diet club have been encouraged to go by wives and girlfriends. had always told me she loves me the way I am, but we both agreed it was time to get trim. It’s about self-respect really.I find that feeling miserable about your weight is one of those things men don’t admit to. I felt self-conscious when I went out; I was convinced people who saw me thought I was a slob.
But recently the erstwhile close friends have fallen out, reportedly because Kobe resents having to make offensive plays through Shaq, while Shaq feels that Kobe is getting a tad uppity for one so young.Meanwhile, the Lakers – despite a narrow 85-83 win against the Phoenix Suns last Wednesday – seem unable to recapture their form of a year ago. The fans, from the street-corner toughs of South Central to the billionaires of Bel-Air, are getting mighty worried. Indeed, if you will forgive me for dropping names, if not positively slam-dunking them, I passed a pleasant few hours at the Playboy Mansion on Friday, chewing the fat with a pyjama-clad Hugh Hefner and his seven identikit blonde playmates. Hefner is a big fan of the Lakers, and a close friend of arguably the greatest Laker of them all, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, who is a regular visitor to the Playboy Mansion. Even more regular than me, in fact.Anyway, Hefner told me that last season he quite frequently took his harem to see the Lakers, but this season he hasn’t been – unlike his buddy Jack Nicholson, who never misses a game “I don’t follow the Lakers like Jack does,” he said “But the owner, Jerry Buss, is a good friend of mine. He was here a few weeks ago and gave me a championship ring.” American men love their rings. They have graduation rings, fraternity rings, and those who win championships get championship rings.
On Saturday I read about a former baseball player, Lou Johnson of the LA Dodgers, who lost his 1965 World Series championship ring in 1971 after offering it as collateral in a cocaine transaction. He is a reformed character now and has spent years regretting the loss of his World Series ring. But last week he was reunited with it, when it was auctioned on the Internet and snapped up for $3,457 (£2,375) by the Dodgers president. Touchingly, Johnson wept when he saw it again – although he has to wear it above the knuckle because his fingers are much fatter than they were. But let’s get back to basketball, which is currently in a slump and not just in Los Angeles. The slump is attributed to the retirement of the great Michael Jordan, whose charisma and popularity energised the entire sport. Without him the all-important TV ratings are down, so everyone is frantically searching for another Jordan, which may be why Kobe is getting too big for his already sizeable boots – as he is the player most often compared to “His Airness”.Already, however, there is a youngster in LA being talked about as the next Kobe Bryant. He is a 7ft tall 18-year-old called Tyson Chandler, who plays centre for Dominguez High School.
Traditionally, high school basketball prodigies move on to college basketball before joining the NBA, but Kobe himself leapfrogged college, and a salary of around $20m doubtless helps him to get over the stigma of not having a degree. The chances are that young Tyson will do the same, and for the sake of my elderly friend from the plane, not to mention Hefner, his seven girlfriends and Jack Nicholson, I hope he joins the Lakers.. Leicester seemed set to capitalise against travel-weary Towers, who had returned from midweek victories against Czech and Polish clubs to close in on a play-off quarter-final place in the North European Basketball League.Leicester led 70-61 at the start of the fourth quarter, but two successive three-pointers from Steve Bucknall tied the scores on 72-72, before a 13-6 run put them in control at 85-78. MacArthur, 24, managed to beat back the tide to cross the finishing line and complete the 25,000-mile solo trek across four oceans in 94 days. She was within minutes of adding another day to her race time, but was delighted when she managed to complete her feat just after 7pm GMT and waved to a crowd of more than 50 boats which had set out from the French resort of Les Sables d’Olonne.Only hours earlier the exhausted yachtswoman waved to her parents, Ken and Avril, and her brother Fergus, 13, hovering above in an RAF helicopter They were only 60ft apart. But that moment, 70 miles from the French coast, was the closest MacArthur had been to another human being in just over three months. She told her parents by radio link she could not wait to get ashore, where a heroine’s reception was waiting. She would be able to hear the crowd of tens of thousands cheering a mile from the shore.
Tens of thousands of people gathered in Les Sables to honour the tiny slip of precocious sailing talent that the French call La Petite Anglaise. In sport, like life, the winner is usually fêted, and runners-up quickly forgotten. But with MacArthur, second to finish in the Vendée Globe, it is different. She becomes one of only two people to have completed the toughest solo yacht race in the world, in less than 100 days. The race winner, the experienced and technically brilliant French yachtsman Michel Desjoyeaux, 38, took 93 days. When Desjoyeaux sailed into Les Sables on Saturday night he became the fastest person ever to circumnavigate the globe, beating the old record by more than 12 days, and was given a rapturous welcome. But it is MacArthur – 14 years younger and weighting just 8-stone and 5ft 2in tall – that has really captured their imaginations and emotions. One French newspaper summed up the national mood with “well done Michel, but bravo Ellen”. Desjoyeaux could be forgiven for resenting MacArthur for overshadowing his amazing achievement. But when he arrived in Les Sables – first of the 16 sailors still in a race which started with 24 competitors – even he seemed preoccupied by the less experienced woman.
I used to feel a bit of a dragon sitting outside the old office barring people from speaking to Allan but now his desk is about six feet away from mine and people can see if he’s in a meeting or on the phone. It wasn’t long before he had the office walls knocked down to make the building completely open plan and the environment less formal and more friendly. People like myself who had worked for the company a number of years thought we might find it too noisy but, on the contrary, it’s great. He immediately asked to be called by his Christian name and it’s “jackets off” in the office now. When I was asked to work for him I was a bit apprehensive but we soon hit it off, especially as I heard that he was a fan of Paul McCartney. Christine Staveley, secretary: I’ve worked for Allan Leighton since he joined Asda as group marketing director in March 1992.
The only circum- stances in which this is a reasonable explanation is if you are already at the top of your pay scale – which, for most people, is unlikely. The bottom line is that there is always room for rewarding employees for their hard work.”. Finally, don’t accept the common excuse that the company is restricted by salary structures. If you are met with this response, there are three essential steps to follow, she says.”First, under no circumstances should you say: `Why?’ Rather, say: `What is it that you would need to see to give me the pay rise?’ Second, get this in writing so that in three or six months’ time, when you can prove you’ve met these demands, it will be harder for him or her to say no again. For instance, you may want to discuss paid travel expenses, a company car, the opportunity to work flexi-time, extra holiday allowance or private medical insurance cover. Mind you, while it’s good to compromise, “be sure that you never take no as an answer”, cautions Allcock.
“Be realistic,” warns Susie Heddon, an independent careers adviser. “The best way to achieve this is to research the market to assess what sort of financial packages your peers receive elsewhere. This may be difficult, but it can be done with the help of recruitment consultants. With facts and figures to hand, you’ll have an answer when your request is met with `What on earth makes you think we should pay that much’?” It is also important to bear in mind that there are alternatives to cash, she adds. After all, it will be in your interests not to ask for an immediate answer. Your boss may want to think about it, and with the proof of your improvements in black and white, you’re likely to get the best deal he or she can offer.”Timing is essential. Whatever you do, don’t catch the boss in a bad mood or when busy. Additionally, make an appointment so that he or she knows you are serious and that you can discuss the matter in private, without interruption.
One of the biggest problems for the secretary after a pay rise is judging how much money to ask for. Increasingly, for instance, secretaries pay to update their IT skills to make themselves more employable and these will inevitably have benefited your employer.”Run through these points in a positive manner and leave this information with your boss. “Point to some achievements or initiatives, or even just your ability to perform. Your boss needs to know that he is paying for something worth having.”Allcock suggests keeping all those little thank-you notes from grateful clients and colleagues as well as making a list of successful projects that you have been involved in and the skills that you have acquired. “Once you’ve worked out what you bring to the job that is deserving of reward, you have to sell it,” he says. “The second biggest mistake people make is being manipulative,” continues Williams. “A great many employees – particularly secretaries – who are after a higher salary go for job interviews at other companies.
It’s a great subject for drama – look at Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? or Clean and Sober – but comedy? Hmmm. Comedy: Off My Face

Alcoholism. He gave them the slow movement of Mozart’s A minor Sonata, K310, as an encore, and got a bottle of rare 1948 Armagnac in return.. Yet although Brendel’s concentration seemed to slip in the second movement Andante, in the outer movements, his architectural sense and pacing were unimpeachable, and these are the qualities with which his many admirers no doubt felt satisfied. By ending with Haydn’s great E flat Sonata, he was making a point – for Haydn – and this was where he was heard at his most characteristic, stretching out the capricious contrasting idea in the first movement, and going for spiky brilliance in the finale. Most of the first half was taken up with Schubert’s spacious G major Sonata, which seemed bland rather than beguiling, and short on sensuous charm.
There seem to be no recordings of him, at least not any available in this country, but it was good to see the BBC taping this recital for future broadcast.Perhaps Yankoff’s expansive warmth would have penetrated even the chilly acoustic of the Royal Festival Hall, where it’s always a slight shock to hear how thin and small even a big Steinway sounds. On Tuesday night Alfred Brendel filled the hall to celebrate 50 years since his first professional recital in Graz, Austria, with a programme after his own heart – though head might be more like it. The occasional exaggerated emphasis was merely the body overreacting to the ardour of the spirit.Yankoff won the Marguerite Long/Jacques Thibaud Competition 49 years ago, and was for many years a distinguished teacher at the Paris Conservatoire. For all its fudged details and less than discreet pedalling, this was a performance that had the real breath of greatness – like the conducting of the late Otto Klemperer. The final Rhapsody, in particular, was gigantic. If there was a sense of struggle, too, in Beethoven’s last Sonata, Op 111, it was a positive quality, yielding that sense of do-or-die urgency, even within a spacious tempo, that makes the listener grip on to every event. You had to ignore a lot of grunting and singing along in the rest of the programme, too, yet it was a real privilege to hear the first and last of Brahms’s Opus 119 pieces unfolded so broadly, and with such a deep, mellow sound. Yet it’s hard to imagine any young player sinking himself in the music as Ventislav Yankoff did at the Wigmore Hall on Monday. He wasn’t very wise to choose Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, because although he did some inspired and spontaneous things with the varied Promenade refrain, too many of the actual Pictures required more speed and accuracy than he could muster.

Wigmore Hall / Royal Festival HallPerhaps it’s a superstition that long experience allows a pianist to be emotionally generous and unselfconscious. It’s no less clear that the benefits will work in both directions.Andrea Quinn (right) conducts the Royal Ballet’s 100th birthday tribute to its founder, Dame Ninette de Valois, Barbican Theatre, 15-20 June (0171 638 8891); the Contemporary Music Network tour of Harrison Birtwistle’s Pulse Shadows begins 18 April, Manchester (0161 907 9000), then tours to Cambridge, London, Leicester.. She will soon conduct a Contemporary Music Network tour of Birtwistle’s Pulse Shadows; and she will be an assistant conductor on English National Opera’s forthcoming production of Massenet’s Manon. Yet it’s clear she has every intention of making the most of the opportunity the Royal Ballet has presented. That will bring modern dance a little closer to the Royal Ballet, and I hope that that will then infiltrate the main theatre.”Ballet won’t take up all Quinn’s time. What’s exciting about getting back into the Opera House is that there will be a small studio theatre which will allow the possibility of working in a similar way to, say, Ballet Rambert, or Siobhan Davies.
We have to have the courage to get those pieces in, to reflect what’s going on today. I’m keen to see Peter Sculthorpe’s music used, as it has been for Australian Ballet. Peter Maxwell Davies has written for ballet, Harrison Birtwistle’s Earth Dances was written for the Royal Ballet, but for various reasons was never used Poul Ruders writes music very appropriate to dance. There are so many fine composers, whose work is not being used. I would love to have not exactly overall control, but some kind of lever, to encourage choreographers towards certain composers. “And of course, a choreographer has to be able to identify absolutely with the music You cannot impose a piece on them It’s too intimate a process; it won’t work.
