I’d been busy all day and I walked into her opening, saw it hanging there and my heart just dropped, mainly out of fear that mine wasn’t sorted out at all. Those feelings are quite shocking when you have them because you think you’re wiser than that But it’s just real life. Some of the most important people in my life subsequently have been people I met then.But Tracey likes to be melodramatic and that can get on my tits We have lots of ups and downs. In fact, we have some nasty conversations, conversations that I don’t have with other people, because Tracey says what she thinks even if it’s a bit unpalatable. I don’t bear a grudge, but when we row it must look pretty funny from outside.Having a close friend who’s in the same profession as you – those things are always difficult. We had the shop for six months, and met a lot of people in that time It changed things for both of us It changed things for others too.

I remember her saying she liked the fact that she saw me laughing in the corner of the gallery.Soon afterwards I went round to her flat for a cup of tea, because I was having housing problems, and I was surprised by how practical she was. She can also be incisive, which was good when we went on to have the shop together. I’m someone who goes through life being nice: I want people to like me Whereas Tracey’s tough. She wouldn’t hesitate to tell someone to get out of the shop if she was fed up with them, so in that way we balance each other quite well.What I like best about Tracey is that she’s exciting. We started to have a lot of ups and downs, and I thought I didn’t want to be in a relationship with someone … but she was the person to do the shop with because she was brave and exciting I knew that it would be a real change.

A load of people went to the pub afterwards and that was where I got into conversation with Tracey. She was wearing a stripy T-shirt, glasses, had lots of curly hair and was very enthusiastic about the show. We both talk a lot when pissed.

The clash of lean and craggy counterpoint was the fuel for M50, whereas each page of the Henze gave fresh revelations of blended timbre. And like Colin Matthews’s M50, the concert’s opener, the piece could equally be heard as a brilliantly concise essay in symphonic velocity.

That kind of sensual charm has always been among his hallmarks, as baritone Alan Opie showed in his reading of the delicate 1950s classic, the Five Neapolitan Songs. Henze may stand among the world’s musical nobility, but put a pencil in his hand and he becomes a vessel for Dionysiac rage. In fact, Appassionatamente is a fantasia on the violent emotions of his recent opera, The Ocean Betrayed, so that any simple equation linking life and art is probably facile. Yet, the night before at Snape Maltings, his Appassionatamente had nearly blown the heads off an enthusiastic audience in its stunning UK premiere, given by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Oliver Knussen.

Sir John had described Henze’s daily routine as pleasures in the afternoon, hard work in the morning Very intense work, to judge from this score. What is it about manuscript paper that has such an effect on composers? Hans Werner Henze, chatting on Sunday to Sir John Drummond at Aldeburgh’s Lighthouse Restaurant, sounded cool and witty, a man basking in the glow of a new autobiography, a major CD reissue of his music by Deutsche Grammophon, and his role as featured festival composer to celebrate his 70th birthday. Paz-Tomlinson is a poet who strikes out boldly at the world through language, and recognises his own sense of importance as an intellectual adventurer. This man’s delivery is fearless and almost hectoring – as if he is giving us all a necessary lesson in how to read great poetry in public. The other is Paz himself, a much more muted, melancholy, tentative figure altogether, who reads undemonstratively, and with a painful, almost doleful, sense of his own inwardness.n `The Double Flame’, a new collection of essays by Octavio Paz on the subjects of love and eroticism, has just been published by the Harvill Press. Which seems, to the minority of the audience whose first language is English, rather unhelpful; and, to the majority of the audience who speak Spanish and are either employed by the Mexican Embassy or have managed to ferret out a distant friend who is, absolutely marvellous.To listen to these two men read is to discover that there are not one but two Octavio Pazs standing in front of us One is the Paz created by Tomlinson. But not a typical Gee-Gee at all: this one, since his retirement, has dared himself to grow a set of tremendously long and aberrantly bushy sideburns. Why is Octavio Paz so late? This is not, after all, some jazz bash. It is, according to the press release, an encounter with Latin America’s greatest living poet.
