These are the companies whose stock market value has sunk so low that they are worth less than the cash they still have left from their IPOs. They might, perhaps, be called the “Better Dead Than Alive Club”, for in theory it would make sense to bid for them for their cash alone.This week the club welcomed a new member. Yes, lastminute , the company that became synonymous with the dot bubble, is now worth less than the cash in its balance sheet, despite well-publicised share buying by its chairman, Alan Leighton, and its founders, Martha Lane Fox and Brent Hoberman The implication could hardly be more insulting. It means that the market puts no value at all on the company’s management or its business. Lastminute is viewed as no more than a cash shell.Of course it is not quite like that.
The freefloat in lastminute is only 20 per cent of the total, which distorts the picture. If anyone actually tried to buy the company, core, long-term shareholders would demand a lot more than the value of the remaining cash It would be the same for many others in the same boat. The present undervaluation for some of these companies is almost as ridiculous as the overvaluations that ruled when the bubble was still inflating. Markets are prone to hysteria and exaggeration – irrational exuberance on the way up and to equally irrational pessimism on the way down.What this bizarre state of affairs might do, however, is galvanise the dot and technology sectors into a new wave of consolidation.

Scoot has appointed Merrill Lynch to conduct a strategic review, which amounts to the same thing, and Interactive Investor, which has already had its review, says it is in talks which could lead to a sale.Since it is impossible for anyone to raise new equity in these markets, it may make sense for those with cash to merge with or take over those without it. If these companies don’t find the strategic partners they are looking for, the future looks bleak. Investors will eventually take the view that it is better to save what’s left of the cash than see it frittered away on a no-hope business, and they will start pushing for liquidation. The Better Dead Than Alive motto would become a reality. The wealth effectEconomists at ING-Barings have calculated the damage to global wealth caused by the dive in world stock markets since their peak, and come up with alarming figures.
The bear market has wiped $7.6 trillion off global wealth in the space of eight months. That compares with a $4.3 trillion hit in the global crisis of 1998, and a tiddly $1.5 trillion in the 1987 crash. A big figure, then, but how much damage will it do? Although the scale of the loss is unprecedented, it follows the biggest bull market of all time. Rising share prices increased global wealth by $14.1 trillion between mid-1998 and mid-2000. Professor Severino Antinori said at the weekend that he would consider leaving Italy, where cloning experiments are banned, if he could find another country where he could carry out the initial animal research.

The company is clearly growing rapidly at the moment but what the City has been keen to know is how well it is insured against a potential downturn, which tends to hit cyclical companies like recruitment consultants hard.Its answer has been to expand into outsourcing, where Robert Walters takes on the recruitment functions of a major company or bank and installs its own staff on site. The European healthcare market remains tough, but there are signs of some improvement in the US following S&N’s shake-up of its sales and marketing set up.And, while it is sensibly cutting costs by pounds 25m or so a year it is not scrimping on its research and development budget, which can only help its long-term growth prospects.Dresdner Kleinwort Benson forecasts current year profits of pounds 161m, putting the shares, which fell 2.5p to 173p yesterday, on a prospective p/e ratio of 17.That looks about right for now, but if Dermagraft takes off the shares will begin to look cheap.. Its big hope is Dermagraft, its revolutionary bio-engineered skin derived from the discarded foreskin of babies. S&N predicts it will bring in revenues of at least pounds 150m within three years by helping to cure foot ulcers for diabetics.If it can be applied to other problems such as leg ulcers or cartilage injuries then it has the potential to transform S&N’s finances, although this is years away.Meanwhile S&N’s profits should pick up in 1999 as the effect of sterling diminishes and the investment in Dermagraft begins to pay off. She hated meetings, was not a natural joiner, believed the stories of Stalin’s atrocities, felt sick when comrades casually argued that you can’t make omelettes without breaking eggs. On the other hand, her allegiances had long been socialist, and were reinforced by the class divisions (shocking to a colonial) which she saw in Britain. All the generous, colourful, literate people she met in London were communists. And she wanted her politics to be more than skittish, more than a way of annoying mummy or shocking the bourgeoisie. So she joined.Joining didn’t just mean signing petitions and having a Party card There were also foreign congresses and writers’ delegations. Lessing describes in detail a trip to the Soviet Union with, among others, Naomi Mitchison. While Lessing seethed at the “noisy insincerity” of what she heard and saw, Mitchison was less inhibited, complaining that the Soviets were no longer tolerant of free love (she had once bathed nude in the Moskva with her lover, she tells them) and satirising socialist-realist paintings (to her suggestion that a cow in one of these paintings looks as if it needs milking, the Party official replied severely “Soviet cows are well treated”).Lessing recalls such scenes with amused but also appalled fascination, wondering how it is that she and thousands of other western intellectuals – “useful idiots”, as Lenin called them – could have supported the most brutal tyranny of our time.
“How ridiculous it does seem now – that we took ourselves so seriously,” she says, and wonders if sentimentality, mass hysteria or a “delayed or displaced collective adolescence” were to blame But this is surely too harsh, on herself and on others. First came Jack, who was Czech and a psychiatrist at the Maudsley; later Clancy Sigal, an American journalist and Trotskyist romantic; others are briefly mentioned but these were the two that count.
Both had deep relationships with Doris Lessing, but neither was ever more than passing through. They made no secret of this – there were always other women in the background – and, since they never promised anything, couldn’t be accused of letting her down.
