As part of a canny promotion for a new celebrity cookery book called Soup Kitchen, the sandwich chain EAT has agreed to serve a recipe from each of the contributing chefs at its outlets.Soups dreamed up by the likes of Gordon Ramsay and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall are being prepared for National Soup Week at the end of the month. However, one of the biggest names of all – the three Michelin-starred Heston Blumenthal – has been dropped.”His recipe required loads of rare seaweed which is practically impossible to obtain,” I’m told.

“So although Heston’s possibly the best chef of the lot, we had to leave him out.”Pandora understands that concerns were also raised over whether the concoction would be to the everyday tastes of EAT’s customers.. Although he’d already given up writing plays – he just writes poetry now, which is pretty bad anyway, so we won’t be too upset if he retires from that.”I’d hate to incite any jealousy, but ought to point out that the award for the Nobel Prize is, in fact, some £735,000.* Here’s proof that too many cooks – or at least too clever a cook – can spoil the broth. And while the literary world queued up to heap praise on Pinter, it was refreshing to hear the octogenarian Sir John singing a slightly different tune.”It is wonderful that Harold won the Nobel Prize for Literature,” he began “And all that money. It’s loads of money – about £80,000, I think.”He’ll never have to write another word in his life.

As Campbell earns her living as a clothes horse, it’s a poor showing.”She’s portrayed in the press as being a bitch,” says one who took part in the survey “The fact that she’s gorgeous just goes out the window. It’s certainly very different from anything I’ve written before: not fiction, not a play.”It’s philosophy of a sort and poses all sorts of questions about life.”I am quite sure it will sell terribly badly and be received fairly badly, too – or ignored altogether. The Work and Pensions Secretary was due to deliver a public lecture at the London School of Economics this evening, but announced over the weekend that he would not be attending.Blunkett was lined up to give the inaugural “Polis” lecture at 6.30pm today. The series, which is a new collaboration between the LSE and the University of the Arts London, is designed to “address the current state of the news media”.The title of his speech was supposed to be – some might say fittingly – “The News We Deserve”.But the LSE has announced that, “due to unforeseen circumstances, this lecture has been cancelled”.According to a spokesman for the university, the event has been scrapped at Blunkett’s request.”He was lined up for this first lecture, so there are no plans to reschedule at the moment,” I am told.* After a career lasting 40 years and spanning novels, plays and film scripts, the author Michael Frayn is preparing to lay down his pen.Best known for the West End hit Copenhagen and the script of John Cleese’s comedy, Clockwise, Frayn has just handed a weighty philosophical tome to his publisher, which has taken him three decades to write, and expects it to be his last book.”I think I have retired,” he tells me. But it seems that the recent torrent of antagonistic stories about the Work and Pensions Secretary has taken its toll at last. Since he was forced to resign as home secretary last year, Blunkett has barely been out of the news.
In just the last week, he’s been hauled over the coals by articles censoring his conduct, ranging from the minor scandal of using House of Commons notepaper inappropriately, to his romantic indiscretions with a young blonde. Now the unwanted attention is forcing Blunkett to cancel engagements.

So to find that not only is it possible to have fun, but that it’s OK to, is very liberating.’Mrs Forrest maintains that schemes such as the Orchard Project are needed in a world where death is taboo and society has forgotten its rituals. The subcontinent exemplifies diversity. In particular, the potentially meandering third movement here progressed gorgeously but inexorably.

Government can do much to promote high standards and good design – and show the private sector that these things, far from costing money, can prove cheaper in the long term than their shoddier alternatives. Even though he quit the House of Commons at the last election, the 1992 publication of his memoirs – The View From No 11 – re-ignited his long- running feud with Margaret Thatcher.
Those same divisions over economic policy were played out again in last autumn’s BBC television series on Lady Thatcher’s premiership. Their equal opportunities manager, Chris Lyles, says: ‘Positive discrimination is illegal, but the law does allow a ‘protected group’ ‘. The value of rights to buy Eurotunnel shares fell to 4p at one point as the company’s share price came under pressure. With a record backlog and solid orderpipeline, principally in defense and law enforcement applications, we expect BMSto have a strong second quarter.” Donahue concluded, “Equipment utilization on some IC test floors is trending upslightly and certain customers have increased their forecasts in recent weeks. While this is encouraging, the business environment remains difficult andequipment utilization is still well below normal levels. “Funny People” actress Leslie Mann on which films get her seal of approval.

His strategy – concentrating his forces in the south instead of the northern states where Congress has lost ground to the National Front – now looks misguided. Not only may Congress lose, but Mr Rao, by crushing all adversaries within his party, may have shattered Congress for years to come.Amid the thousands of candidates are several bandits, Bombay film stars and even a eunuch named after Kali, the goddess of destruction. Seven of Mr Rao’s ministers were forced to resign and all were denied party tickets for the May elections. They want to kick out Coca-Cola, Kentucky Fried Chicken and the other brand names which to them symbolise all that is wrong with the West. Many of the country’s top politicians are facing charges in a huge corruption scandal. Few doubt that the police investigation was triggered by Mr Rao, since the victims are his biggest rivals both inside and outside his Congress party. Health experts consider 65 per cent of all Indian children under the age of five to be malnourished.Mr Rao is committed to liberalising India’s economy.

But his leftist and right-wing foes are trying to persuade voters that Mr Rao’s reforms have gone too far, too fast and have failed to lift India’s poor out of misery. Both the BJP and the National Front claim that if elected, they will restrict foreign investment to power and infra-structure. With nearly 50 births every minute, India’s population growth is the highest in the world. This has eroded the advances made by the Congress government’s economic reforms; yearly income has dropped from $330 (pounds 215) in 1991 to $290 in 1993. Over 40 per cent of India’s 920 million people live in poverty.Ignored, too, in the electoral fray is the fact that India spends only $9 a year per person on education and one dollar on health.

None of the parties is willing to confront urgent issues such as India’s booming population or its poverty. If this forecast proves true, India faces the unsettling prospect of a hung parliament, or a coalition government patched together between one of the big three parties and the rowdy regional ones.Like the gymnasium wrestler intent on grinding his opponent’s face in the mud, the politicians have lost sight of any goal beyond their own personal victory. Gains by the BJP and the leftist coalition are expected to reduce Congress’s share to less than 200 parliamentary seats. Both are joining a breakaway party led by another Congressman, GK Moonapar, who described Ms Jayalalitha as “undemocratic, fascist and corrupt”.An opinion poll conducted by Outlook magazine showed that although Congress is expected to win most seats in the 545-member Lok Sabah, or lower house, Mr Rao’s party will be flailing to reach a majority.

The Congress party’s leader, premier Narasimha Rao, 74, yesterday was left staggering after the resignation of two cabinet ministers – P Chidambaram of commerce, and M Arunachalam in charge of industry. Both men were vital to Mr Rao’s campaign in the southern states, and Mr Chidambaram was also a leading architect behind the government’s economic reforms. The two ministers are from Tamil Nadu and were angered by Mr Rao’s pact with the state’s chief minister, a preening ex-film actress named Jayalalitha. The battle among the three main parties – the ruling Congress party, the right-wing Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the leftist coalition, the National Front – is expected to be closely fought and dirty. All parties have been hit by last-minute defections, Congress the worst. Or, when all else fails, gangs of these wrestlers are hired to steal the ballot boxes on election day.In this free-for-all general election, to be held next month, the service of these rent-a-goons is much in demand.

One of the first trips that any Indian politician makes during his election campaign is to the nearest akhara, the gymnasium of wrestlers. There, from among the muscled and oiled youths grappling in thick mud, the politician will chose his campaign staff.More crucial than speechwriters or spin doctors, the wrestler acts as the Indian politician’s bodyguard and his bullying enforcer who gets out the vote through bribes, threats and free booze. His last victim however was a California timber executive, killed opening a mailbomb in his Sacramento office on April 24, 1995.The first of the Unabomber’s 16 attacks was in May 1978 in Chicago. Only once was he sighted, just before a bombing near a computer store in Salt Lake City.Along the way he has developed into a skilful amateur chemist and bombmaker. His earlier devices were primitive but in the most recent cases elaborate bombs, about the size of a videocassette, have been his trademark, sometimes coming with his unofficial signature “FC”.That too was the term he used to describe himself (in the plural) in the published tract. But investigators have never believed that the Unabomber was anything other than a single individual..

Eastern Tajikistan now harbours an important new drug- and weapons-trading route that supplies Afghan heroin through the former Soviet Union to lucrative markets in the West.’All this talk of Communists winning and Islamics losing is an exaggeration, a smokescreen. Unless the diocese and its many parishes asserted prior claims (which was not infrequent), he would always be in his stall at the daily offices. At the same time he played an active role in relation to the Governing Body, two periods of office serving as Dean’s deputy or Censor Theologiae and presiding over complicated business meetings when the Dean was absent on leave. Even Rowell has never explained how and why his players invariably stir themselves at the crisis-point.’There may be some clubs buying in players but they can’t buy the Bath spirit,’ he added spikily. The loss of authority is a dangerous thing, not something to snigger about, treat lightly, still less celebrate. Then there’s Amy Beach’s home-baked Pastorale – a mere nightcap after the Barber, but the perfect foil to John Harbison’s Quintet Harbison is the born dramatist, not to say extremist, here. His father, who organised some of the great Handel festivals of the last century, wanted his son to study the piano; but the boy found the keyboard uncongenial, and preferred playing a tin whistle surreptitiously in his bedroom. ‘Jesus, Bobby,’ he recalled telling him, ‘what an incredibly dumb song] I mean, what the hell is blowing in the wind?’ A few weeks later he had the answer.

The concepts of ‘unemployment’ and ‘retirement’ emerged in the late 19th century. (This is the lender’s insurance against you defaulting.) Smith’s attacking round on this nippy chestnut horse left him half a second ahead of the Italian, Filippo Moyersoen, on Dugano, with John Whitaker a close third on Henderson Fonda. First we must have independence, then democracy.’The new constitution, based on a mix of European models, envisages a centralised presidential system, as well as strict separation of Islam and the state.President Karimov, a trim, sharp-witted and restless man in his early fifties, frequently addresses the Uzbek people on television to call on them to unite behind him as he sets up the new state. Many people, especially in the nervous Russian community, appreciate the fact that Mr Karimov has kept Uzbekistan working efficiently and on a short leash. But opposition meetings are effectively banned and – although Mr Karimov won a presidential election last December – diplomats are uneasy about Uzbekistan being ruled by unrelenting ex-Communists.. A good friend said it was the only supermarket she knew that she put lipstick on for. The only real question, which has been obscured by the black-and-white presentation of the struggle at Westminster, is whether Britain walks off the crumbling Maastricht stage now, or whether we agree to stick with the formalities of the Maastricht process while seeking to reshape Europe on better and more up-to-date lines as soon as the ratification phase is over – assuming that the Danes do not reject it anyway on 18 May.It is a nice point of diplomatic judgement. The decision could lead to scores of similar claims.
The 1991 Criminal Justice Act means parents or legal guardians can be held liable for the actions of people in their care. The authority argued it was not to blame for the destruction caused by a 16-year-old boy who was supposed to be under supervision in a council home. But magistrates disagreed and ordered the authority to pay half the cost of the total damage to the owners of the stolen cars.

The only problem with the play is Ayshe Raif’s understandable desire to fit in every Parker one-liner in reach It’s fun, but towards the end credibility falters. Set out on a wall or a flat stone table, they act as a reminder of the places where they were found, or of the people who shared a summer. But it is a tremendous thing nevertheless, a panorama full of emotion, excitement, humanity and even hope. Eight years ago Scotland went on to hammer England with Scott scoring the final try.
It is not with the best of timing that the Hastings’ double act should coincide with a match to decide the wooden spoon. ‘This will put extra pressure on Southampton and Everton,’ he said with ill-disguised glee before adding, ‘but we can’t worry too much about what other teams are doing.’No, it’s April. The fact is that Sir Simon’s application is seriously defective, particularly in its treatment of environmental questions, and the presentation of his case at the meeting in Presteigne on 19 April produced a hostile reaction from an audience made up almost entirely from the immediate area.

Some of those present, like Paul Beresford, had been running authorities. ‘Any structure that differs in size between men and women,’ says Laura Allen, ‘is likely to vary with sexual orientation.’ She adds that the differences in anatomy that have been observed may explain variations in some brain functions which have been shown to exist between heterosexual men, homosexual men and women. It is well known that men are better at tests of spatial ability (such as putting blocks together) while women are likely to score higher on tests of verbal ability.

The Swiss banks appeared to hold all the important cards: “They had the archives, they had the files.” He now realises how wrong he was.
While the Swiss stonewalled, the WJC made inquiries at the US National Archives in Washington, and stumbled on to evidence of Operation Safe Haven, a collection of secret documents that has profound implications for Swiss banks and many leading German companies. “We were negotiating with the Swiss banks to get access to all dormant Jewish accounts opened before 1938. Their unilateral attempt to close the matter made us believe they were scared of what we might find.”

The WJC condemned the Swiss move, and entered what Mr Steinberg calls “a period of confrontation”. Last February, Elan Steinberg received a surprising call at his New York office. The executive director of the World Jewish Congress heard the Swiss government was about to hand over 774 secret bank accounts that had been opened by Holocaust victims before the Second World War “I was shocked,” he says.

And nobody asks heterosexual couples what they do in bed together. If they practise sodomy it is a private subject.”"You can see that this is hardly some kind of well-financed compaign,” Mr Foley noted. “This is no plot to destroy Western civilisation and bring about some sort of cultural meltdown. These are simply two men who are in love with one another and want to get married.”. “When it is all over people will see that the sky hasn’t fallen, and the earth hasn’t come to an end.” He is especially exasperated that those who oppose gay marriage seem fixated with what homosexuals do in bed “It is not about sex You don’t have to get married to have sex with somebody.

Their printing business – mostly T- shirts – has been struggling recently, and they are moving it to smaller premises. A pair of cockatoos scream for attention from their cage, which stands next to Joe’s prized purple Harley-Davidson, used only for special occasions. Financial prospects might improve with interest in their story coming from Hollywood, and still-vague plans, if all ends well, to open a resort for gay couples coming to Hawaii to tie the knot.”We’re not trying to change society,” the mildly-camp Joe explained. “This is just the state trying to show to the people that they’re trying to do something.” Clearly exhausted by the pressures that the case has brought upon them, Pat and Joe cheer themselves by contemplating their plans. They intend to get married the instant the final ruling in their favour comes down, preferably by the very judge that delivers it. Pat, who is 39, envisages a massive wedding party some time later, with 2,000 guests. To visit the pair at their somewhat scruffy warehouse is to discover an almost comical disjuncture between their very personal and quite touching ambitions for one another and the nigh-satanical image that is conjured of them by their conservative foes. The court gave the state one last chance to prove before a lower court that it has a “compelling interest” to deny gays the right to marry.

That hearing opens in a circuit court here on Tuesday. Most expect the “compelling interest” to concern children, and the dangers that may exist in their being raised by single-sex couples. “All things being equal, the best surroundings for a child is within a family with a father and a mother,” Hawaii’s Attorney General, Margery Bronster, recently asserted The state is widely expected to lose, however. Even if it appeals again to the Hawaii Supreme Court – there is no recourse on matters of this kind to the federal Supreme Court in Washington – Pat and Joe may finally win within the next 18 months.Daniel Foley, who had at first been reluctant to take on the case because he was certain it would fail, is now optimistic “The religious right are my biggest fans,” he said. “Why would all this be going on in statehouses around the country if they weren’t expecting us to prevail?” He believes that victory will mean a civil rights watershed akin to the 1963 Brown vs Board of Education ruling that introduced desegregation in America and Roe vs Wade, which established women’s right to abortion.”We’ve already won,” Joe, 48, insisted in an interview at work last week.

You will have been given a statement by your previous employer showing what your future benefits may be at retirement along with a transfer value. To prepare, work out which of these categories you fit into – don’t worry if none of them seem right; not everyone can be pigeonholed. In most cases you will probably be better off joining the scheme. Now, what have you left behind? Look at your documents and find out. It will be a final salary scheme, a final salary scheme plus AVC, a final salary scheme plus free-standing additional voluntary contributions (FSAVC), a money purchase, a money purchase plus AVC, a money purchase plus FSAVC, or personal pension plan.It is a good idea to get professional advice to make sure you make the right decision about whether to move your money or leave it where it is to grow.

You should start by speaking to the person in charge of the pension scheme at your new place of work. Having read the pension scheme handbook (see box for definition of different pension schemes) you should know what commitment your employer is making. So you need to find out whether you can justify a transfer because the benefits will add up to more than the cost of moving your money.Start by considering what your new employer might be offering. For the rest of us transfers of benefits can rarely be made without some cost.

You can either leave your old pensions to grow, or you can cash in the proceeds and stick the money into your current pension plan. How do you know when to stick and when to switch? There is no magic formula but there are several things to consider that may make your decision easier.
Public-sector employees may find their employer belongs to a Transfer Club that allows benefits to move between various schemes without penalty. The more complicated our work patterns, the greater the number of pensions we leave behind, having paid in for a few years. ALMOST all of us will change jobs several times during our working lives, go part-time or become self-employed. There is no suggestion that the UK would agree to common border controls..

More than 100 Romanian illegal immigrants were found in Kent on Friday.Ministers believe that they could present the policy to right-wingers as an attempt to get tough on illegal immigrants by improving the scrutiny of applications. The Prime Minister and Jack Straw, the Home Secretary, are privately drawing up plans to reverse the UK’s opt-out of immigration law which is enshrined in the Amsterdam Treaty.
The controversial proposal would mean Britain abiding by asylum legislation agreed in Brussels, including an EU-wide definition of a refugee, the treatment of asylum seekers and the “white list” of countries where no serious risk of persecution is considered to exist. The Government fears that if Britain is not involved in the European- wide legislation, it will end up as a favoured port for asylum seekers who may find it increasingly difficult to break through the ring of steel around the rest of Europe.Britain is now the second most popular country in Europe – behind Germany – with asylum seekers. Although the leader’s position is safe for now, they are drawing up plans to challenge him if the Tories’ standing in the polls does not improve over the next few months.. TONY BLAIR is preparing to sign up to a common European asylum law in an attempt to prove that Britain is committed to the EU despite its refusal to join the single currency at its launch next year, writes Rachel Sylvester. However, the Tory leader is coming under increasing pressure from Conservatives in both the Commons and the Lords.MPs on both the right and the left of the party are also privately discussing organising a vote of no confidence in Mr Hague. In return, the Tories would agree not to wreck the legislation on hereditary peers or other Government Bills. However, Downing Street has now confirmed that the second meeting between Lord Cranborne and the Prime Minister’s advisers took place on Monday. The news will shore up support for Mr Hague’s decision to sack Lord Cranborne. It will further infuriate the Tory leader, who is already angry that he was kept out of the picture until the arrangements were finalised.Mr Hague fired Lord Cranborne after the peer clinched a deal with Mr Blair to allow about 100 hereditary peers to stay in the Lords until the upper chamber is fully reformed. At the same time, the involvement of Mr Campbell, one of Tony Blair’s most trusted advisers, in drawing up a presentational strategy also shows how worried the Government was about announcing the deal. The Government confirmed last week that Lord Cranborne had met Mr Blair in Downing Street last Thursday to finalise details of the deal over a glass of whisky.

Mr Campbell even gave Lord Cranborne a copy of the response which Tony Blair was planning to make on Wednesday afternoon.
At their rendezvous on Monday, the two men agreed that Lord Cranborne would telephone the Conservative leader William Hague on Wednesday morning to tell him the deal had been struck. The independent crossbench peers would then announce the compromise proposal at 3.15pm, Lord Cranborne would tell the Association of Conservative Peers at 3.30 pm and Mr Campbell would brief journalists at 3.45pm that the Prime Minister supported the deal. The news that Lord Cranborne had a second rendezvous in Downing Street reveals the extent to which he was willing to collaborate with the Government to get the deal through. The two discussed the detail of the timing of the announcement and their reactions to it. When the property was seized, the government [of the day] made no distinction between the pro- perty of the Nazis and of the people murdered by them.”. LORD CRANBORNE, the sacked former Leader of the Conservative peers, had a secret meeting with Alastair Campbell, the Prime Minister’s Press Secretary, at No 10 on Monday to draw up a media strategy for the announcement of the controversial deal on hereditary peers. “There are real practical difficulties in setting up a scheme more than 50 years after the event.”Lord Janner, the chairman of the Holocaust Educational Trust, which has campaigned for compensation, was delighted with the decision.”They are doing the honourable, decent thing. This means all victims of Nazi persecution, or their families, will be eligible to make a claim.”This has not been easy,” said Mr Mandelson yesterday. Records show that about 225,000 individuals and companies had property seized. In a speech to the British Israel Chamber of Commerce tomorrow, Mr Mandelson will announce that he has accepted the recommendations of Lord Archer, who was appointed by the Government to conduct an inquiry into the compensation claims.

Still, it is true that Tony Blair does sometimes write articles for the tabloids. If you want to find out what Mr Blair thinks, you will have to ask him yourself, which you can’t do, because he is under exclusive contract to us.”A reader writes: Oh, come off it ! How long do you think you can keep up this parallel between Blair and Hague swanning round Northern Ireland, and the two nurses being released from their Saudi prison? Is there any more mileage in it?No. Why, he cannot even keep peace with his own unions! What chance has a gnarled old problem like Northern Ireland got?”Look, I’m only the guy who issues prepared statements on behalf of the Daily Tabloid. Thank you, this informal off-the-record briefing is now over.”And in what sort of shape does he seem now?”Good shape. This additional, further off-the-record briefing is now over.”No, but in that case, just tell us why has he suddenly flitted off to Northern Ireland and started going around the place telling people that they must vote “Yes” in the referendum, as it is their only chance of peace, thus suggesting that he is seriously deranged…”Well, we cannot speak for Mr Blair, of course, but I imagine he is saying that because he believes it.”But everyone knows that this kind of deal doesn’t work! Blair himself has seen at first hand how the Oslo peace deal became unravelled.

Not surprisingly, the experience has driven him close to the edge of a breakdown, but miraculously he has come through the ordeal perhaps even stronger than before and determined to tell his story, which will be only in the Daily Tabloid. That is the end of our prepared statement.”
Yes, but could you give us some idea, just off the record, of what this suffering was like?”He has been kept in close confinement over the last year under most unpleasant circumstances, sometimes alone with Mr Netanyahu and Mr Arafat, sometimes alone with Mr Adams and Mr Trimble, sometimes alone with Mr Kohl and Mr Santer, sometimes alone with Mr Bill Clinton. “Mr Blair and his junior colleague Mr Hague have undergone a great deal of suffering and distress in the past few months,” said the Daily Tabloid in a prepared statement, “so we do not think it is in their best interests to face the public just yet. Also, he is contracted to us exclusively for a large sum of money to talk to us and us only, and we propose to keep him to that. They are of no use to this kind of journalism whatsoever, for they might reveal the truth; and that.

for all the pompous and self- congratulatory rhetoric on display, is not what is really being bought and sold here.. I HAD very much hoped to have an article by Tony Blair in this space this morning, but unfortunately he has been whisked away by the newspaper to which he is contracted to a safe place in Northern Ireland, where he cannot be contacted. Whatever we believe about these women we are operating entirely instinct, guess work and prejudice of one kind or another. It is tempting to see the necessity of creating this new brand of victim- heroines who flaunt their suffering as the result of a post-traumatic stress disorder produced by the death of Diana The media abhors a vacuum and must fill it somehow, anyhow. Murderous au-pairs and nurses will do, as long as we get to feel their pain too.We are not interested in the real victims of all this, for the dead cannot tell their stories. Clearly in future any body breaking the law in a foreign country should be flown home immediately – especially if they are young, female and even a little photogenic – as they could not possibly get a fair trial elsewhere.None of this really qualifies as news but operates as the turning of tragedies into real life whodunnits. Or have we all become such cultural relativists that abuses of human rights are not our business if they interfere with our capacity to do business?Such questions unfortunately will be ignored in an attempt to parade Parry and McLauchlan through the press as victims who have suffered horrendous injustices. They have to tread a fine line between insisting that the Saudi’s are nice guys to do business with and recognising their tendency to behead the odd Filipino.

If we accept that this is a country in which innocent nurses are tortured into making confessions, in which British citizens can be executed in a medieval style, in which lives can be bought and sold – then why are we selling them so many arms?It is extremely difficult to see what is remotely ethical in all this. Who says victimhood isn’t powerful? However many of us feel uneasy, just as we did with Louise Woodward, when British women abroad are presumed innocent no matter what courts in far away lands might say.It is easy enough to whip up anti-Islamic feeling, just as it was easy to deride a legal system that freed OJ Simpson. The same people who decried the payment of pounds 15,000 to Mary Bell will be happy to see these two women make large amounts of money. Had the death sentence been carried out on Parry, business as usual would have been difficult to maintain. This is why British Aerospace which has huge contracts in the region came up with the blood money for Frank Gilford. Is all this part of the “ethical foreign policy” that Robin Cook proudly proclaims? The huge arms deals to Saudi Arabia mean that Blair and Cook have in some ways to keep the Saudi’s sweet so that they remain an important alley in a volatile area. The murdered woman herself was said at one point to have been a lone-shark.All these financial dealings appear incredibly sordid.

And it left us with the question of where he could go next before this fevered intensity disappeared into the vortex of its own psychosis. Here is his answer a scatter-gun sequel to Tabloid that takes us from the aftermath of Kennedy to the assassination of King. Ellroy jump-cuts from Vegas to Vietnam, civil rights to the Klan, with a myriad of plots feeding off each other. The Venn diagram of The Cold Six Thousand looks something like this: the CIA needs the Vietnam war to escalate to feed the military-industrial complex; the Mafia use it as a cheap source for opium supply (and demand); Howard Hughes is moving in on the casinos and sees drugs as a threat to his tourist trade; J Edgar Hoover sees heroin as a way of containing black activism; and the Teamsters see gambling as a way of laundering money. All of the above need to convince LBJ that he really is in charge of the country. It is within these overlaps and ellipses that the narrative can be found. What Ellroy offers us instead of the conventions of syntax is a kind of hipster haiku, bebop snapshots that give menacing hints at the bigger pictures.Ruby’s shooting of Oswald, for example, is as follows: “Hangover The room light hurt The TV noise hurt Alka-Seltzer helped Wayne sipped Alka-Seltzer Wayne saw cops with Stetsons. The TV picture jumped/slapped the box/tapped the dials/the picture cohered A man jumped out Dark suit/fedora Right arm outstretched He stepped up He aimed a gun Wayne blinked.

Wayne saw it/oh fuck.” And so it goes: a relentless staccato of images and rhythms, as though Ezra Pound had resurfaced with a benzedrine-addiction and a taste for neon noir.Interspersed with this graffiti-rap are transcripts of recorded conversations between Hoffa, Hoover and Hughes. Ellroy’s acts of ventriloquism interweave the novel’s various threads, while his use of newspaper headlines is a shorthand for narrative progress. The astonishing thing about this bebop-bricolage is that it manages to take us along with it. The specifics may elude us, but the atmospherics more than compensate. We are as bewildered as his characters, as disorientated as history, in masochistic surrender to the tyranny of words and their treacherous rhythms. There are moments that you may not know what the hell is going on, but it is the going on that makes this compulsive.James Ellroy’s cast of hopheads and whores, his deviants, gamblers, freaks and hoods, are not America corrupted, but America in its purest, uncut form. That he writes of his demons with such awe-ful fascination illustrates the extent to which they still haunt him The Mad Dog is again off his leash Relish his return to his vomit.. Down the Highway: the life of Bob Dylan by Howard Sounes (Doubleday, £17.99, 517pp)

Rock has no definitive history; nor can it have.

Its chronicling is a wholly idiosyncratic exercise undertaken within the shifting parameters of taste and commerce, where each new fad requires a conscious re-evaluation of what has gone before A few players resist downgrading. But straight biography, even with the best intentions, hardly ever explains their survival. Typically, a more or less compelling account of the formative years degenerates into a who-said-what-to-whom assemblage of press clippings until, in retreat from a once carefully cultivated public, the star withdraws: Presley to Graceland, Lennon to the Dakota, Bob Dylan to Woodstock and Malibu. Dylan’s life story, like so many others, is reduced to a litany of recording schedules and concert dates.
Wilfrid Mellers, then professor of music at York University, posed the crucial question in a 1972 essay, “Freedom and responsibility”: “The Beatles have disbanded, Gershwin died young, Irving Berlin, Crosby and Sinatra remained permanently adolescent, Cole Porter survived by becoming exclusively deflatory. Can Dylan preserve his folk-like integrity from youth through the middle years and even into a venerable old age?”As Bob Dylan prepares to celebrate his 60th birthday next month, it seems safe to answer that question in the affirmative.

Boris Johnson’s stocking, containing a year’s supply of Krispy Kreme doughnuts, did not do quite so well. The gossip: This year’s hot ticket is said to be a donation from the actor James Purefoy He has offered a personal tour of the set of Rome. Macmillan Cancer Relief hopes to make £100,000 from the evening. The atmosphere: Champagne, canap?and feverish bidding, followed by Christmas carols to soothe those who have stretched the plastic too far. “The drinks will continue to flow through the auction to encourage the bidding juices to flow,” says an organiser. Trudie Styler, Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, Bill Nighy and Hugh Grant have all made their suggestions, and have all been invited to bid for their ideal Christmas presents. “You can’t put male nudity in an ad the way you can put female nudity in an ad and have it be perfectly acceptable.

I mean, we still have a disconnect because of the attitude that men have about being uncomfortable about being the objects of women’s fantasies and gaze.” That would explain why men would be less likely than women to dream about one day appearing in the pages of Playgirl (and why there aren’t any Boys Gone Wild). But it doesn’t explain why women would be buying the magazine, the rabbit-head merchandise, the shtick. “To say that the gap is closing isn’t to say that the gap has closed,” she replied. “A lot of women read the magazine,” Christie Hefner told me when I went to visit her in Chicago.

“We know they read it because we get letters from them.” And this was proof, she said, that “the post-sexual-revolution, post-women’s-movement generation that is now out there in their late twenties and early thirties has just a more grown-up, comfortable, natural attitude about sex and sexiness that is more in line with where guys (omega) were a couple generations before. The rabbit head symbolises sexy fun, a little bit of rebelliousness, the same way a navel ring does… or low-rider jeans! It’s an obvious ‘I’m taking control of how I look and the statement I’m making’ as opposed to ‘I’m embarrassed about it’ or ‘I’m uncomfortable with it’ A little bit of that in-your-face.. but in a fun way… frisky is a good word.” I asked her why she supposed all these frisky, in-your-face women were buying Playboy instead of, say, Playgirl. Hefner’s daughter Christie is the chairman and CEO of Playboy Enterprises The CFO is a middle-aged mother named Linda Havard.

The Playboy Foundation (which has supported the ERA and abortion rights among other progressive causes) is run by Cleo Wilson, an African-American former civil-rights activist. A woman named Marilyn Grabowski produces more than half the magazine’s photo features. Playboy’s image has everything to do with its pyjama-clad, septuagenarian, babe-magnet founder, Hugh Hefner, and the surreal world of celebrities, multiple “girlfriends” and nonstop bikini parties he’s set up around himself But in actuality, Playboy is a company largely run by women. Because of the feminist movement, women today – on both sides of the Atlantic – obviously have staggeringly different opportunities and expectations than our mothers did: we have attained a degree of hard-won (and still threatened) freedom in our personal lives; we are gradually penetrating the highest levels of the work force; we get to go to college and play sports and run for government office. But to look around, you’d think all any of us want to do is rip off our clothes and shake it It no longer makes sense to just blame men. Mia Leist and plenty of other women are behind the scenes, not just in front of the cameras, making decisions, making money and shouting “We want boobs.” Playboy is a case in point.

What we have managed to create is an unusual balance between relevant work experience and personal care and attention.”For many youngsters, the more academic parts of the National Curriculum are irrelevant, say experts. “Every one of the lads who has passed through Revitalise has found the vocational element of the course useful,” said project leader Trevor Blackman. “Who, on the face of it, is going to give work to kids with a history like that?” asked Michael Grier of Tate & Lyle, one of the biggest employers in the London borough of Newham. “Yet if you look a little deeper, you can see there are a range of behavioural, social and family factors contributing to the problem. As a local business, we want a thriving community around us and we feel we can contribute something towards achieving that.”Tate & Lyle lent its in-house photographer to the project in the start- up phase and, in a less direct way, its mentoring and literacy projects, mock interview training, help with filling in application forms, visits to its Beckton filtration plant and book donations to Newham schools are having a beneficial, long-term effect on educational standards in the borough.Mowlem, meanwhile, provided an instructor at its national training centre in Beckton to teach the boys bricklaying.

“The work I did at Revitalise was more relevant than a lot of the National Curriculum. It has helped me prepare for getting a job.”The parts played by Tate & Lyle, Mowlem the builders and the Docklands motorcycle project have been vital to the project’s success. Meanwhile, a liaison officer between school and programme helped to re-integrate Marc into full-time education and provided an essential sense of continuity.”I am doing better in class and enjoy the work,” said Marc, now back at school full-time. The project has multi-agency backing from local groups such as Newham Education Business Partnership and the London East Training and Enterprise Council. For a few hours each weekday, Marc learnt the rudiments of bricklaying, music and information technology, motorcycle maintenance and arts and crafts. More than 100,000 are temporarily excluded.
But, paradoxically, Marc was thrown a lifeline because of his exclusion.

While attending school on a part-time basis, he joined the Revitalise project, in which disaffected pupils – all but one of the 54 is male- get vocational training under the auspices of Newham’s youth and community service. It’s a story all too common in today’s inner- city comprehensives as police, educationalists, youth workers, employers and the Government’s social exclusion unit know only too well. The number of pupils permanently excluded from school for disruptive behaviour and repeated truancy has been rising steadily. Nationally there were 13,500 in 1996-97, up from 11,100 in 1994-95. Some 40 per cent of robberies are committed by 12- to 16-year-olds and 5 per cent are committed by children in school time.
