Now the ball ran for Hasselbaink, the home defence freezing before him, the Dutchman driving the ball home from just inside the penalty area. Now Leeds, sensing the opposition’s disarray, went for the jugular and Hasselbaink, fed by Harry Kewell, skipped through for his second goal five minutes from time.. Liverpool claimed another penalty when Woodgate brought down Thompson but as Gallagher waved away their appeal, Leeds broke swiftly and when a shot by David Hopkin was blocked, the ball sat up for Smith, who had just come on, to push it wide of James.Moments later, Liverpool were incensed again when a challenge by Hopkin on the substitute Oyvind Leonhardsen went unpunished and again Leeds took advantage. Riedle was helped off in a daze as Fowler slid his penalty to Martyn’s left. But Liverpool’s joy lasted only 10 minutes before it was overturned amid acrimony. Then Martyn pulled off a memorable save to turn a powerful effort by Fowler around the post. After 68 minutes Liverpool went ahead through a penalty converted by Fowler The adjudged offender was Martyn, harshly perhaps. He and Riedle jumped for David Thompson’s ball and, though the Leeds goalkeeper appeared to make a legitimate attempt at a punched clearance, he flattened the German striker and the referee Dermot Gallagher pointed to the spot. In 20 minutes of Liverpool pressure, Riedle and Redknapp both went close as the home side won a string of corners before Redknapp, jinking his way into the penalty area on the left, beat Nigel Martyn with a curling shot that almost crept inside the far post. Long passes towards the front pair were mopped up easily by the three Leeds centre-backs, even when one of them, Hiden, had to leave the field for the last few minutes of the first half after a clash of heads with Riedle.Liverpool began the second period with fresh ideas and invigorated motivation, working the ball through the middle more.
Only once did Liverpool produce a threatening moment, the Leeds defender Martin Hiden whipping the ball away from Riedle’s feet after Berger, released by Redknapp’s precision pass, pulled the ball back from the byline on the left.Tactically, Liverpool had been getting nowhere. The atmosphere into which they stepped was not, perhaps, as they would have liked it.Anfield was in shock, still trying to come to terms with the week’s developments There was no great welcome for the new regime. In one corner of the ground, a banner read: “Thanks, Roy.” Many did clamour for Evans to go but now it has happened there is sadness that an honourable man with Liverpool in his soul has had to acknowledge his failure. In the first half, the football was as subdued as the audience. Having led after 68 minutes, their confidence was shattered when Leeds scored twice in the space of little more than 60 seconds.Houllier said: “The game changed completely in those seconds.
I had been pleased with the way we were playing, but our confidence is thin and I had a feeling the equaliser could have dreadful consequences, especially since we thought we should have had a penalty just before Leeds scored. I now have ahead of me a football job and a pyschological job, both to strengthen the team and to restore their mental strength.”Houllier, who replaced Brad Friedel in goal with David James and recalled Jamie Redknapp, Patrik Berger and Karlheinz Riedle, took his place in the dug-out from the start, his assistant Phil Thompson alongside him a considerably more animated figure, shouting and gesticulating, jumping to his feet from time to time. Like his teammate, the defender Jonathan Woodgate, Smith was available only because the Uefa Under-18 tournament due to have taken place in Israel this weekend was cancelled.Houllier will point to the absence through injury of Michael Owen and Steve McManaman as making his task more difficult, but the presence of neither would have made up for the defensive deficiencies that again let Liverpool down. To the dismay of a full-house crowd drawn to witness the start of the Gerard Houllier era, the team that Roy Evans handed over last week suffered a third consecutive home defeat as Leeds overturned the deficit of a penalty midway through the second half to score three goals in the space of seven minutes.Leeds, themselves trying to rebuild after the departure of George Graham, chalked up their first away win of the season and only their second at Anfield in 19 visits, bouncing back from their midweek Worthington Cup defeat at Leicester to win with a debut goal from the 18-year-old substitute Alan Smith and two from their Dutch striker, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. All along, they knew that Evans understood their frustration The end of an era? Evans was asked ” ‘Tis for me,” he said..

Half-time: 0-0 Attendance: 44,305LIVERPOOL ARE under new management, but the crisis at Anfield is a long way from being solved. A schizophrenic atmosphere had pervaded Anfield in recent weeks as the crowd wrestled with their anger and their abiding sense of loyalty to the club rather than this mercurial team. After the prolonged managerial circuses at Leeds and Tottenham, the executions at Liverpool were commendably clean. It is a measure of the respect in which Evans was held in the city, both halves as it happens, that the Kop turned on the team well before they pinpointed the easier target in the dug-out. Nor was there any question about the strength of the entente cordiale between Houllier and Evans “It’s not about personalities,” Evans added. “It’s about the club.” Though offered a post upstairs, Evans did not want to be a “ghost on the wall” as he put it Liverpool have enough of those to fill the Walker Gallery. It was actually Evans himself who first voiced the disquiet in the offices of his chairman, not the other way around.
And when Moores said, close to tears, that he had known Evans from boyhood and that their relationship would not be affected, no one was in any doubt about the robust certainty of the statement. The Kop’s general idea of what is required involves a row of millionaires’ backsides and a pair of size tens.Roy Evans will probably not feel it, though he might wake up this morning with a genuine sense of relief that the problems are no longer his, but there was widespread approval at the way the handover – dismissal and resignation seem too coarse words for Evans – was engineered. Judging by his written work, Houllier’s tactical team talks may as well be delivered in Swahili for all the sense Jason McAteer will make of them. It is hard to imagine Jack the Lad locals like Fowler and MacManaman, arch exponents of the “verbal dance” once outlined by Alan Bennett as the chief characteristic of the Liverpudlian, searching deep into well-padded souls to dredge up that extra ounce of spirit on Houllier’s behalf. Thompson has been hired to put the boot back into the Boot Room. But whether that combination will prove any more effective than the cuddly double-act performed by Houllier and Evans, which the press rightly divined as being unworkable from day one, is open to debate.Houllier is a studious man, educated, elegant, the author of Entraineur: Competence and Passion and the architect of the highly successful youth development system in France.

The nurses have also derived greater job satisfaction from the autonomous and holistic patient care and the medical staff now have more time to care for those children who require their special skills.LYNN STOKOEWard Manager, Children’s Day Unit (Ward 5)Royal Victoria InfirmaryNewcastle upon Tyne. The funding made available from reduction of junior doctors’ hours has been used to employ extra staff to support the additional roles rather than to employ a “nurse practitioner” to replace a junior doctor. Experienced nurses who understand the needs of their patients can offer more flexibility and continuity of care than the more task-oriented doctors. In our children’s emergency and investigation unit all members of the nursing team are empowered to expand their role. The greatest benefit from this role change is in the quality of care that can now be offered to the patients and their families. Nurses tend to stay in post for longer than a six-month rotation, which allows them to build up greater skills and competence.
The “nurse practitioner” however should not be seen as a mere replacement for a junior doctor. Nurses remodel health service

Nesting habitats for songbirds are often not dense enough and nests can easily be found by magpies and other predators. On shooting estates where magpie populations are controlled by the methods advocated by S G Armstrong, it is true that songbirds benefit from reduced predation, but songbirds on shooting estates also benefit from the abundance of habitats established and maintained for the game birds. There are predators far worse than magpies: people who trim their hedges during spring and summer, thereby revealing nests to predators or causing nests to be deserted; cats and cars who each kill millions of birds a year.GRAHAM GIDDINSLymington, Hampshire. Mead, BTO.Feb 1992).The problem in a park or garden is that the habitat has been developed primarily to meet human requirements. This has been determined from detailed British Trust for Ornithology surveys (C. The national picture is very different.
In areas where there is sufficient habitat for nesting songbirds to conceal their nests in thick cover, the population increases and decreases of songbirds and magpies have been shown to rise and fall approximately in tandem. But unemployment is falling anyway, and surely Labour could have stolen some of the Liberal Democrats’ best clothes by promising more money for schools. (From a tax which, because it is already discounted by City markets, is the closest thing to a free lunch.)But perhaps there is a more fundamental deception at the heart of the education debate. Perhaps politicians pretend that education is the first, second and third priority of modern statecraft because we, parents and non-parents, pretend that this is what we want.

It does not mean that anyone should allow the rest of the campaign to be conducted in this manner. The best hope is that the Tories take their fight energetically but with a little honesty into the Labour camp, and that the rest of us look hard at Conservative plans, which we have mostly ignored as ”unlikely to happen”. So long as Mr Major is on his back foot, as he has been throughout the first week, neither of these things will happen. And that is why what the country needs right now is for the Conservative campaign to get into gear.. Sir: The decision of the President of the Family Division to starve a woman to death (“Legal confusion as coma woman allowed to die”, 22 March) is disgraceful. It is one of a long line of cases in which the Family Division, often encouraged by the Official Solicitor, has sanctioned abuses of defenceless patients. The Official Solicitor has been particularly active in urging courts to impose forced obstetric intervention on vulnerable pregnant women: the judges always agree.
Last year, Mr Justice Wall ordered that force could be used on a woman detained in a mental hospital, to impose an induced labour or a Caesarean. The Official Solicitor argued for the use of force on his own client under the Mental Health Act 1983. The judge’s reasoning for this barbarism was that a Caesarean was treatment for the woman’s mental disorder: a decision derided by many legal critics. This is the man who ordered an anorexic teenager to be locked up a few days ago.
What is particularly sinister is the anonymity afforded by the court to the hospital and the doctors in this latest case, as in so many others. If state hospitals want to kill or otherwise abuse their patients, they should be forced to bring their cases into open court, in the Queen’s Bench Division. The patient should have independent, civil liberties lawyers acting for him or her: not the Official Solicitor. Then the abuses perpetrated by secretive family courts would grind to a halt.BARBARA M HEWSONGray’s InnLondon WC1.
Sir: Polly Toynbee (“Howard’s dismal legacy – Straw’s great opportunity”, 20 March) really is very unfair to Jack Straw: for the second time she has sought to convey the impression in her column that he is trying to become Home Secretary by deceit. After the election, she says he will “speak in very different tones” about the waste and ineffectiveness of the Howard/Straw policy of backing massive expenditure on longer prison sentences. What basis does she have to suggest that Mr Straw was insincere in supporting large parts of Michael Howard’s Crime Bill, and that his actions would he the opposite of his words?
If Polly Toynbee herself means what she says about the need for a more practical and prevention-based crime policy, she should back the Liberal Democrats, who have consistently opposed mandatory sentences. Indeed, it was entirely at the Liberal Democrats’ insistence that Michael Howard was forced to accept the crucial amendment to the Bill last week. Labour were prepared to let the Bill go through without it.ALAN BEITH, MPLiberal Democrat Home Affairs SpokesmanHouse of CommonsLondon SW1. A hat-trick of tries from the Salford centre, Kris Tassell, made sure that Wales opened their campaign in the Lincoln Financial World Cup with a convincing win, even if they made heavy weather of it in the first half.
Held to a half-time draw by a side competing at this level for the first time, they got it right after the interval as Iestyn Harris and Keiron Cunningham began to exert an influence and Tassell’s finishing did the rest.Wales made a solid enough start, a gliding run from Paul Stirling taking them into Cook Islands territory and, after Anthony Farrell had been stopped on the line, Cunningham’s long pass gave Lee Briers the space to step inside the covering defenders for the game’s first try, converted by Harris. The Welsh twice went close in the first quarter – Tassell just scraping the touchline with his toe as he touched down in the corner and Stirling being denied a try by Jason Critchley’s forward pass. They were made to pay for those failures to turn their territorial advantage into points when the Cooks silenced a decent Wrexham crowd for the terrible conditions by equalising.Kevin Iro, the Cook Islands captain and by far their most illustrious player, did the damage, running at the badly aligned Wales defence, drawing Stirling in off his wing and giving Karl Temata a clear run to the line.Richard Piakura, taking over as kicker after Steve Berriman had missed an easy penalty earlier, put over the conversion from the touchline. That, embarrassingly for a nation that likes to regard itself as a major power in any form of rugby, was the way it stayed until half-time.The blushes faded a little two minutes into the second half when Cunningham, subdued compared with his form with St Helens, at last made one of his typically rampaging runs. That set up the position from which the lively Briers released Tassell with a pass that had a hint of forward about it.Harris matched Piakura’s touchline kick and also put over a penalty after the Cook Islands’ substitute, Tere Glassie, tripped Briers as he chased his own chip kick.
Harris had shown little of the magic he produces so regularly for Leeds, but after 55 minutes he virtually sealed the game by running at the line, spinning out of tackles and dropping the ball off for Mick Jenkins to score. It was now comfortable for Wales as the tiring Islanders found the struggle with the conditions an increasingly uneven one. Cunningham went over from close range and, with 10 minutes to play, Tassell, an Australian whose grandfather came from Pontypridd, exchanged passes with Anthony Sullivan to claim his second try.His hat-trick came courtesy of Briers’ double kick-ahead and regather while Harris finished with seven goals from seven attempts. The Welsh captain said that he had not been unduly concerned by being held at half-time. “We said before the game that it was going to be tight in the first half,” Harris said. “We weren’t going to win it in the first half but we were quite happy at half-time because we knew they would tire.”The Welsh coach, Clive Griffiths, paid particular tribute to the efforts of the Leigh prop Dave Whittle, who kept coming back for more despite taking a battering from the opposing forwards. That is the spirit that Wales will need if they are to prosper in their two remaining group matches against Lebanon and New Zealand.WALES: Atcheson (St Helens), Sterling (Leeds), Tassell (Salford), Critchley (Leicester), Sullivan (St Helens), Harris (Leeds), Briers (Warrington), Farrell (Leeds), Cunningham (St Helens), Whittle (Leigh), Morgan (Canberra), Jenkins (Hull), Busby (Warrington).

Now, here in Poland we have 100 professional theatres and every year there are as many as 18 new interpretations of Shakespeare.”In keeping with the revival, the British Council last year supported the staging of A Winter’s Tale at the Maly theatre in St Petersburg. “Shakespeare acts as a bridge between cultures,” said Sally Cowling, head of drama and dance at the British Council. “Audiences in central Europe are very interested in classical texts and how we perform them compared to their own productions.”Perhaps more than any other region outside England, central Europe has always shown a special affinity for Shakespeare. Most believe it is unlikely the aid workers will feel able to work with the Taliban’s attitudes to women and the violence and discrimination which has characterised their regime. That is unlikely to bode well for the long-suffering people of Kabul.. EASTERN EUROPE is finally paying off its debt. Not a financial one to the IMF and World Bank, but a literary one to the world’s best- known playwright.
Nations such as Poland and Hungary, whose citizens translated Shakespeare into their mother tongue as an expression of cultural independence during the revolutions of the 19th century, are finding new relevance in his work as they undergo whirlwind political and economic change. Every day people are coming, desperate to know what is happening There are people who rely on the subsidy. If it goes they may die,” said Mr Ghous, 30.The agencies’ position is now weak. If they come back into Kabul they will have to do so on the Taliban’s terms.
“The aid community have to decide whether they are here to follow a liberal Western agenda and fight for the right of women, ethnic minorities and so on, or whether they are going to swallow hard and try and do what they can without taking on the Taliban,” said one senior aid worker. For large sections of the city the aid workers’ departure has meant shortages of food and drugs as well as a lack of safe water. According to a recent United Nations report, hundreds of thousands of people are now at risk of disease at a time when the availability of medicine and the skilled staff to administer them properly has been drastically cut.The northern suburb of Khair Khana is one of the worst affected areas. Its roads of dusty, dirty streets have had their water piped in by a French aid agency for over a year. Now the agency has gone and the only source of safe water is a single tap at the local mosque. One local resident, Rachmatullah, said he was very worried because his wife was expecting their first child “Water is the first necessity,” he said “We are all using the same tap. It is getting very crowded, and if there is a problem with supply there, then the only place to go will be the wells.”Less than a mile away, in another part of Khair Khana, the wells are already in use According to the UN, many are already badly contaminated.
“The water from our well is pretty bad,” said Mohammed Ghous as he watched a flock of sheep being watered. “But there’s no choice”.Mr Ghous needs hundreds of litres each day to keep his bakery running. He is one of several hundred bakers who are paid by the United Nations and aid agencies to provide cut-price bread. He still receives his subsidy, provided by the UN who have not joined the general pullout, but scores of other bakeries who belong to the scheme have had their funding withdrawn in the past two weeks.
“If they are the enemy of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, then they are our enemies too.”But while victory for the Taliban may soon bring an end to the fighting, its quarrel with the aid agencies is bad news for the people of Kabul. Even some of the Taliban’s bitterest enemies have come over to its side – on the frontline yesterday at Hotkai, 20 miles from Kabul, the platoon occupying the most forward position was made up of Hazaras, whose fellow tribesmen are desperately fighting the Taliban in the north. Their home valleys, to the west of Kabul, were even being bombed by the jets of their own side as we spoke. The enmity between the Taliban, who are largely composed of Sunni Muslim Pathans, and the Hazaras, Shia Muslims of Mongol descent – has historically been vicious and bitter, but the men crouching in the shallow scooped trenches yesterday had a somewhat different view.”Tajik, Pathan, Uzbek or Hazara, Sunni or Shia it doesn’t matter,” said Mohammed Sher, the platoon commander, rapidly listing the major ethnic and religious divisions of Afghanistan. No one is confident of finding a way out of the current impasse. The Taliban, having made huge steps in the past few days towards seizing control of the whole of Afghanistan, is unlikely to be in any mood to compromise.Yesterday the movement, which captured Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan’s second largest city, earlier this month, claimed to have taken control of Aibak, capital of the northern province of Samangan. Their offices have since been locked and sealed, and much of the multi-million pound aid programme in Kabul is collapsing.
For the aid workers it was a frustrating and depressing episode that summed up the difficulties they say they face in dealing with the Taliban.

A little too much density at times, perhaps, where Duthie’s efforts at narrative compression lead to the contrived exposition of questions that would surely have arisen before – whether Mother might be better off in a nursing-home, or the fact that keeps his cupboards consistently full by shoplifting. Duthie achieves this through , whose increasingly frantic flamboyance blends with brisk practicality, as well as by sketching the various castles in the air to which the other three retreat when reality gets too much.Guthie’s dialogue displays an easy fluency of voice and idiom, with only the occasional stilted lapse, while complex characterisation lends the piece a satisfying weight. Despite seeking refuge from his (unseen) patient’s incessant demands – in made-up memories of the days when he ran a boutique in Carnaby Street and hob-nobbed with the stars, has reached the end of his tether.
His pleas for help in carrying through what he claims are his mother’s own wishes bring the secrets and lies underlying the foursome’s close-knit relationships to the surface.Set in the northern port of Peterhead – where Irene has just been appointed the fishmarket’s first saleswoman (her ambition contrasting starkly with John’s defining lack of it) – the play juxtaposes the ordinary and extraordinary on multiple levels. is most obviously about euthanasia, depicting a family brought to breaking-point by the strain of caring for a bedridden elderly parent. Far from coming over as issue-driven, it couches its questions amid the broader tensions between characters’ moral attitudes and their various approaches to the necessity of compromise, meanwhile painting in a subtext about gender roles and escape. As the unmarried son nursing his stroke-felled mother, Hunter sustains a brilliant balancing-act between histrionic hilarity and heart-rending pathos, his character the unlikely linchpin of a family circle that includes his brother John, sister-in-law Bunty and niece Irene, who offer moral support if little practical help. And all this in the spare room of a house whose interior wouldn’t look out of place in Chigwell.A delicate blend, then. Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh
Standing as a lone panto-free bastion amid the festive glut, the Traverse’s new production offers the odd stylistic nod Yulewards under the aegis of its splendidly camp, cross-dressing protagonist, played by veteran Dame Russell Hunter, while presenting a painfully realistic picture of notions of family togetherness and seasonal goodwill. He is the captor who’s not so sure he’s in control – a wily seducer who’d rather use brain to catch his bird, than brawn.
Unperturbed, she digs a neatly manicured hand into the chocs and pops one into her mouth. He watches with a mixture of uncertainty and awe.So there you have it No James Bond exploits but lots of suspense, nevertheless She’s the predator who is happy to be caught. Upstairs we slip into a room where, on a double bed, there sits the bait: a box of Milk Tray. The intruder, a brunette in black evening dress, is then revealed as she reaches for the box “Hello Tiger,” croons a peculiar voice from the shadows She turns to see her captor close the bedroom door. This is Milk Tray man Nineties-style.The action takes place at night Someone creeps into a house through patio doors. Past potted foliage, an ethnic mask and a white sofa, sharing the intruder’s viewpoint we pad towards the staircase.
We saw him scale cliffs, ski precipices and swim through perilous seas to slip into a mystery woman’s room and leave a box of chocs on her bed before departing.
Meet his successor: a man of average build, mousey hair and an indiscriminate middle-European accent. Perhaps the biggest challenge for any successful advertising campaign is knowing when to call it a day. The ads may be long-running and well- loved, but do they still have an impact with the consumer? And, more importantly, do they still say what the advertiser wants to say about a particular brand?
Such was the debate at Cadbury when it decided to bump off the Man in Black. This chisel-faced action man risked life and limb to deliver a box of Milk Tray throughout the Seventies and Eighties. As she does so, the bundles of straw that have to be transformed are thrown in relay by the cast off the stage and back up the aisles while, in contrary motion, a vast bucking snake of glittering gold net is tossed mid-air around the stage like an unnervingly dubious travesty of a beautiful cordon sanitaire. If justice in these stories is often violent in its righteousness, this impression is modified by the way certain tales show ne’er-do-wells outwitting the virtuous.

The improvement in the margin reflects the successful effortsto aggressively reduce deposit and other borrowing costs during the quarter.Moderating the favorable impact of lower costs of interest bearing liabilitieswas the increase in non-performing assets that lowered the effective yield onthese assets.”While we believe the economy may begin to improve by the end of 2009, we stillexpect a difficult operating environment over the next several quarters,” saidSanchez. We are confident that our solid capitalization andliquidity positions, combined with the ongoing growth of our wholesale mortgagedivision and the recent expansion of the residential mortgage market, havepositioned us well to navigate through the remainder of 2009 and take advantageof any improvements in our markets.”About Coastal Banking Company Inc.Coastal Banking Company Inc., based in Beaufort, S.C., is the $476.4million-asset bank holding company of CBC National Bank, which operates asLowcountry National Bank in Beaufort, S.C., First National Bank of Nassau Countyin Fernandina Beach, Fla., and The Georgia Bank in Meigs, Ga. Noninterest income in the first quarter of2009 was $2.2 million, double the $1.1 million earned in the fourth quarter of2008 resulting from a significant increase in the gain on sale of mortgageloans. “Despite this possibility, wewill continue to aggressively recognize problem loans and maintain an adequateloan-loss reserve level to cover potential losses based on conservativeassessments of underlying collateral values.”Net interest income before provision for loan losses in the first quarter of2009 totaled $2.4 million, an increase of $0.2 million from $2.2 million earnedduring the final quarter of 2008. Net loans charged off during thequarter ended March 31, 2009 were $2.2 million, a decline of 65 percent from thelevel of net loans charged off in the prior quarter ended Dec 31, 2008. Noninterest expense for the three months ended March 31, 2009 was $4.3million, down by $0.3 from the fourth quarter of 2008 on lower levels of loancollection related costs. The rise in net interest income reflects an improvement in the company’s netinterest margin, reversing a trend of compression experienced over the priorfour consecutive quarters, and comes despite the downward pressure from theincreased level of nonaccrual loans.Net interest margin for the quarter ended March 31, 2009, was 2.21 percent, anincrease of 19 basis points over the 2.02 percent recorded during the fourthquarter of 2008. Whilestill an unacceptably high level of loan charge-offs, the company is encouragedby the large reduction.Nonaccrual loans as a percentage of total loans at March 31, 2009, were 7.97percent, compared to 5.98 percent at the end of the previous quarter The rateof increase declined quarter over quarter. The rate of increase wasapproximately one-third that of the lowest rate recorded in each of the priorthree quarter over quarter periods.
Other real estate owned at March 31, 2009declined slightly to $5.4 million, compared to $5.8 million at Dec. 31, 2008.”The consecutive quarter decline in charge-offs and other real estate owned, andthe declining rate of increase in nonaccrual loans during the first quarter of2009 are possible indicators that the slump in the real estate and housingmarkets is beginning to bottom out,” said Sanchez. This represents a near doubling ofthe $122.0 million in loans originated for sale in the secondary market duringthe fourth quarter of 2008.”After generating organic growth of more than eight percent in our portfolioloans during 2008, we expanded our efforts to originate residential real estateloans for sale in the secondary market in the first quarter of 2009, nearlydoubling our funding levels from the prior quarter,” said Sanchez. “We feel thatwe can best serve the credit needs of our markets during this current financialcrisis by continuing to emphasize wholesale residential mortgage loanoriginations, especially as we continue to leverage our proceeds from theTreasury Department’s TARP program.”The company increased the allowance for loan losses to $5.6 million at March 31,2009, or 1.83 percent of loans outstanding, from $4.8 million, or 1.59 percentof loans outstanding, at the end of 2008. This portfolio shrinkage was morethan offset by growth in residential real estate loans, which totaled $107.2million at March 31, 2009, an increase of $3.6 million, or 3.5 percent, duringthe first quarter. These loans were funded through the company’s wholesale mortgage bankingdivision, which in the first quarter of 2009 originated approximately $236.0million in loans available for sale in the secondary market, utilizing aconservative, low-risk loan product strategy.
His strategy – concentrating his forces in the south instead of the northern states where Congress has lost ground to the National Front – now looks misguided. Not only may Congress lose, but Mr Rao, by crushing all adversaries within his party, may have shattered Congress for years to come.Amid the thousands of candidates are several bandits, Bombay film stars and even a eunuch named after Kali, the goddess of destruction. Seven of Mr Rao’s ministers were forced to resign and all were denied party tickets for the May elections. They want to kick out Coca-Cola, Kentucky Fried Chicken and the other brand names which to them symbolise all that is wrong with the West. Many of the country’s top politicians are facing charges in a huge corruption scandal. Few doubt that the police investigation was triggered by Mr Rao, since the victims are his biggest rivals both inside and outside his Congress party. Health experts consider 65 per cent of all Indian children under the age of five to be malnourished.Mr Rao is committed to liberalising India’s economy.
But his leftist and right-wing foes are trying to persuade voters that Mr Rao’s reforms have gone too far, too fast and have failed to lift India’s poor out of misery. Both the BJP and the National Front claim that if elected, they will restrict foreign investment to power and infra-structure. With nearly 50 births every minute, India’s population growth is the highest in the world. This has eroded the advances made by the Congress government’s economic reforms; yearly income has dropped from $330 (pounds 215) in 1991 to $290 in 1993. Over 40 per cent of India’s 920 million people live in poverty.Ignored, too, in the electoral fray is the fact that India spends only $9 a year per person on education and one dollar on health.
None of the parties is willing to confront urgent issues such as India’s booming population or its poverty. If this forecast proves true, India faces the unsettling prospect of a hung parliament, or a coalition government patched together between one of the big three parties and the rowdy regional ones.Like the gymnasium wrestler intent on grinding his opponent’s face in the mud, the politicians have lost sight of any goal beyond their own personal victory. Gains by the BJP and the leftist coalition are expected to reduce Congress’s share to less than 200 parliamentary seats. Both are joining a breakaway party led by another Congressman, GK Moonapar, who described Ms Jayalalitha as “undemocratic, fascist and corrupt”.An opinion poll conducted by Outlook magazine showed that although Congress is expected to win most seats in the 545-member Lok Sabah, or lower house, Mr Rao’s party will be flailing to reach a majority.
The Congress party’s leader, premier Narasimha Rao, 74, yesterday was left staggering after the resignation of two cabinet ministers – P Chidambaram of commerce, and M Arunachalam in charge of industry. Both men were vital to Mr Rao’s campaign in the southern states, and Mr Chidambaram was also a leading architect behind the government’s economic reforms. The two ministers are from Tamil Nadu and were angered by Mr Rao’s pact with the state’s chief minister, a preening ex-film actress named Jayalalitha. The battle among the three main parties – the ruling Congress party, the right-wing Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the leftist coalition, the National Front – is expected to be closely fought and dirty. All parties have been hit by last-minute defections, Congress the worst. Or, when all else fails, gangs of these wrestlers are hired to steal the ballot boxes on election day.In this free-for-all general election, to be held next month, the service of these rent-a-goons is much in demand.

One of the first trips that any Indian politician makes during his election campaign is to the nearest akhara, the gymnasium of wrestlers. There, from among the muscled and oiled youths grappling in thick mud, the politician will chose his campaign staff.More crucial than speechwriters or spin doctors, the wrestler acts as the Indian politician’s bodyguard and his bullying enforcer who gets out the vote through bribes, threats and free booze. His last victim however was a California timber executive, killed opening a mailbomb in his Sacramento office on April 24, 1995.The first of the Unabomber’s 16 attacks was in May 1978 in Chicago. Only once was he sighted, just before a bombing near a computer store in Salt Lake City.Along the way he has developed into a skilful amateur chemist and bombmaker. His earlier devices were primitive but in the most recent cases elaborate bombs, about the size of a videocassette, have been his trademark, sometimes coming with his unofficial signature “FC”.That too was the term he used to describe himself (in the plural) in the published tract. But investigators have never believed that the Unabomber was anything other than a single individual..
Out went the “Four Olds” – old ideas, old culture, old customs, old habits – and in marched the Red Guard and the fearsome Gang of Four.
A former Shanghai actress (under the stage name Lan P’ing), Mme Mao made the “reform” of the Peking Opera her pet project: in place of the old “bourgeois” historical dramas and romances, Chiang Ch’ing herself devised five new revolutionary ballets, the most famous of which, The Red Detachment of Women, featured an all-singing, all-dancing troop of the Red Women’s Militia rescuing a poor peasant girl from rape and torture at the hands of a sadistic landowner on a torrid tropical island. If that scenario sounds at all familiar to anyone who has been following the Barbican’s cornucopian “Inventing America” season, it may be because the composer, John Adams, and the director, Peter Sellars, incorporated their own re-working of The Red Detachment into the central act of their now-historic headline-based opera, Nixon in China, the belated London premiere of which (11 years after the rest of the world got to see it) launched the Barbican Centre’s year-long season in January.Sadly, that performance was only a concert version, so Londoners still haven’t seen the trend-setting staging that first declared Sellars as one of the most exciting, thought-provoking and emotionally direct (if predictably controversial) directors of his generation. And now, confession time. In communist China, the idea of “doing things by the book” once meant only one thing: the Little Red Book, otherwise known as The Thoughts of Chairman Mao. “Out with the old, in with the new” was another innocuous Western cliche that would have taken on sinister overtones at the time of the so-called Cultural Revolution, those three disastrous years during which the red- bound thoughts of the Chairman were so destructively realised in the blood- stained actions of his wife, Chiang Ch’ing. Mike, next time, please, hold the waterworks and make it Notre- Dame de Paris in July!A version of this review appeared in some editions of Saturday’s paper. A rave, Balearic Tubular Bells, then? Not quite, but there are some dance rhythms and loops behind the opening and closing sections of the new work, which followed a shortened reprise of the original.Tinkle tinkle went the famous piano and xylophone phrase, and the event took on messianic proportions as blankets of rain fell in front of the stage. Fittingly enough, Tubular Bells 3’s central song and forthcoming single is called “Man In The Rain”, and the thunderous effects of the intro detracted from its obvious similarity to the 1983 hit “Moonlight Shadow”.Backed by a 10-piece ensemble, including three percussionists (such as the in-demand Jody Linscott) and three vocalists, the bleached-blond, tanned, healthy-looking Oldfield doodled away and bent the notes like a virtuoso, soothing the corporate audience.
When the trademark bells came, bang on 10pm, they provided a giant emotional release for the soaked spectators. However, it wasn’t quite up to the regal setting of central London. The record that launched the Virgin label 25 years and 18 million copies ago has gone from hippie-must-listen to coffee-table status, and its minimalist Erik Satie-like motifs still send a shiver down the spine of Exorcist aficionados, when they aren’t cropping up on curious dance mixes.
Perhaps prompted by Rob Dickins, the head honcho of his label WEA, who engineered a makeover for Rod Stewart, Oldfield, the godfather of the ambient and new age movement, has upped sticks and gone to Ibiza to absorb some of the techno and hedonistic aspects of the club scene there. Rather than looking up Kevin Ayers, the quirky British singer-songwriter – now a Majorca resident – with whom he first secured gainful employment as a teenager, Mike has ended up following the trance-dance route his old cohort Steve Hillage started exploring at the beginning of the Nineties. Surely not what Mike Oldfield had hoped for to launch his new opus, which sees the progressive rock maestro go back once more to the sweeping grandeur and pomp of Tubular Bells (the second instalment was at Edinburgh Castle in 1992). THE BRITISH have a great propensity to enjoy themselves whatever the weather.
Staging the world premiere of Tubular Bells 3 in in Horse Guards Parade in central London was asking too much of the gods and, sure enough, it bucketed down on the 7,000 spectators. If everyone did, it would help stop lice spreading.`Facts of Lice’, produced and directed by Maurice Melzak, is on Carlton tomorrow at 7.30pm. It involves physically removing the lice from hair that has been soaked in conditioner. This scheme is based on understanding the life cycle of the head louse. If the first combing of the wet hair is done thoroughly, it will remove the adult lice but not the eggs, which are stuck fast to the hair. A strict regime of combing-out, every three or four days for two weeks, should remove the lice that hatch before they manage to reproduce. There are also homoeopathic remedies, such as tea tree oil. In the US, olive oil is said to suffocate lice by blocking their breathing holes.
Some people have found hair gel discourages the beasts, but there is really no quick fix. It seems that the best thing to do is to check a child’s hair at least once a week by combing with the fine-tooth head-louse comb.If you find lice, try a little detective work to find out where they came from – and be responsible: tell friends and relatives. However, many chemicals may have different names and make-up, but they are based on the same active ingredient. For example, Prioderm, Suleo M and Derbac M all contain the organo-phosphate malathion. If the louse is resistant to one, it is likely it will be resistant to the others.Even if a lotion does kill adult lice, any eggs they have laid may live on to begin a new cycle.
