William Hootkin’s excellent Thornton Clay – the stout, permanent bachelor kind of social climber who delights in inveigling invitations from the most impregnably lofty English families and then promptly dropping them – approaches the vowel in the word “clothes” with the showiness of someone who has learnt to walk on stilts round a mantrap. Pearl’s determinedly clenched pronunciations – “errises” for heiresses and “kirrikter” for character – make one’s buttocks ache in sympathy. All of which is good fun, though there are some puzzling points. To play these ex-pats, Rudman uses a mix of American and non-American actors. Splendid in other respects, Rula Lenska’s duchesse seems to have wiped Chicago from her tones with a thoroughness suggestive of death and complete reincarnation, while Arthur Fenwick – Pearl’s elderly, doting admirer who keeps her in the funds necessary to make a splash as a hostess – appears, in Nigel Davenport’s gruffly amiable performance, like a local lad that “done good” rather than an entrepreneur who has escaped here from the snobberies of New York.
It’s an evening of awkwardnesses and genuine pleasures. You sometimes wonder, watching this entertaining but physically ungainly production, why Chichester bothers to have an epic thrust-stage given its decided partiality for proscenium-arch pieces. Like a Henry James story redrafted by a cut-price Congreve, it presents a world where American heiresses barter their fortunes for a nice title.
Written in 1915 and first produced in New York two years later, the play takes a sour look at the American colony within English high society. Through the medium of Peter Hurford and the mind of Bach, we have a chance to partake of, in Spinoza’s words, “The highest endeavour of the mind, and the highest virtue”. One of the great attractions of Edinburgh is access to silence – the silence of the Pentland Hills, for example. Yesterday was my first rest day, and we went for a walk up there – it was so peaceful, we both fell asleep, and got severely sunburnt! And here at Greyfriars, with its kirkyard – you wouldn’t know you were in the middle of a city.” An ideal setting for playing, and listening to, this sublime music, on the magnificent Peter Collins organ of 1990.What is it, then, about Bach’s music, and his organ music in particular, that makes it so supremely great? “It’s his simultaneous mastery of technique and ability to convey what is deepest in his spirit in the music that he writes; to communicate the deepest emotions to people who feel the same.” Sitting in Greyfriars Kirk, listening to this timeless music, with the afternoon sun streaming through the stained glass windows behind the great organ case like Shelley’s dome of glass staining the white light of eternity, one knows that this is a very special experience.
I remember at a recital in Australia once, the organist played the Prelude and Fugue in D minor right through on full organ; it’s one of the few times I’ve really recoiled on behalf of my instrument – people gradually got up and walked out! I’m lucky – I’ve got my wife as my `ears at the back’.”Silence, as he’s already mentioned, is a big issue with Hurford. “My Who’s Who entry lists my hobbies as `walking, wine and silence’. “You have to learn to put your ears at the back of the church and think `What are they hearing?’ Essentially the intensity of sound can be enormous – you have to be careful. It’s the same as with the recordings – each one is a concert in itself.”Llike the great critic Ernest Newman, Hurford believes that “the Chorale Preludes are the key to the very heart of Bach”.”In planning this series, I started with the Chorale Preludes – the `Eighteen’, the Orgelbuchlein, and so on – and spread them through; the next thing was to choose good starting and finishing pieces – not necessarily loud for the latter, but one should always end with a big piece. The one mistake I feel I’ve made, so far, was ending the second programme with the Canonic Variations on `Von Himmel Hoch’ – not enough zip.”And putting yourself in the place of the listener is important. I feel my instrument does get rather a bad press, sometimes; probably because players will use the most obvious features – loudness, playing lots of notes very fast – losing sight of what Bach found so attractive about the organ – using it as a beautiful way of creating musical line.”Given the immense variety of the uvre, ranging as it does over the whole of Bach’s life, and containing everything from tiny Chorales to immense Preludes and Fugues, how did he approach planning the series? “My favourite listener is the man in the street,” he says, “someone who is interested, knows of Bach and, while he’s at the Festival, would like to come to an organ recital.

Eat your heart out, Pickering.l The capture of a record-breaking 53lb 15oz carp sent angling publications into a frenzy, and one paid a rumoured pounds 1,000 for the captor’s story – probably the first example of chequebook journalism in angling. But just to show that God goes fishing, last week the same fish was caught again, weighing 55lb 6oz. The latest captor, Alex White, is said to be miffed that his new record attracted only a pounds 250 bid. A couple of years ago, I fished in Maine with the owner of a huge outdoor complex and his bass partner, who mended trucks Addicts? I’ll say. This $5 tome contains nearly 500 pages, and Bass Pro shops are huge.
Their Missouri branch has a 150,000 sq ft showroom, while the Atlanta store includes a 40ft aquarium so anglers can observe bass feeding habits. Bass are amusing enough, but like triple X-rated movies and cheap wine, they are not something a gentleman spends a lot of time and money on.”I, however, consider largemouths right up there with trout on the scale of respectability and have even been known to quote Russell Chatham [don't ask me] to the effect that, if a bass and trout of equal size were tied tail to tail, the bass would tow that trout clear up to Healdsburg.” This is an American way of saying that bass are stronger. There are six species, but basically anglers are after smallmouth and largemouth bass (somewhat misnamed because even a 3lb smallmouth could engulf your fist without scraping the skin). The bass fan club can best be gauged from an annual catalogue issued by Bass Pro Shops. A fish every 100 seconds might seem a great many to catch in five hours, but Pickering is perhaps the most adept angler in Britain at catching large numbers quickly He once caught 14 fish, admittedly tiny ones, in a minute. In the US, however, top-line fishers would have greeted such arm-aching exertions with amusement. After all, they compete for purses of $50,000 or more and can win with just one fish, as long as it’s the biggest.
Such rewards have generated a professional circuit and each year, one event offers a staggering $1m top prize. You might suppose that salmon or perhaps trout would be their quarry But no. More than half of America’s 56m fishers put freshwater or black bass at the top of the pile. So what’s the appeal? Even ardent trouters admit that bass are something special. Acclaimed author and trout addict John Gierach, in his latest book, Sex, Death and Fly-Fishing, writes: “Given the choice, the fly-fisher with any breeding whatsoever always chooses the spotted, streamlined fish. And as for the cricket …Elsewhere, it is a different story.
The Tour de France manages to be both a national festival and ruthlessly competitive event, while the Melbourne Cup horse race in Australia, or the baseball World Series in America remain uncompromised by worries about social or sartorial codes and are much more enjoyable as sporting fixtures for that reason. The summer season of English sport, however, remains dogged by imperial nostalgia, snobbery, frantic role-playing, posturing and, yes, persistent failure. It seemed entirely apt, then, that while our rugby players were capitulating to France and our cricketers were crumbling to the West Indies, John “warm beer” Major was running the white underpants of surrender up the mast.Another vein of nostalgia was opened up this week when Havant District Council announced that it was considering a ban on “street football” in order to prevent general rowdiness and damage to gardens. The notion was soon put around that such a ban, if applied nationwide, would seal off the well-spring of our youthful footballing talent.Such traditionalists as Tommy Docherty and Bob Wilson were encouraged to reminisce at how their own skills were honed on bomb-sites and street corners, dodging Hovis delivery bikes and whippets, and kicking the withered shell of a tennis ball against a garage door. After the Denmark event, a spokesman for Imperial Tobacco said, with gritted teeth: “Embassy is thrilled to pay out the biggest prize in angling.” Undoubtedly it took the precaution of insuring against the unlikely event of anyone breaking the record.
Pickering’s haul comprised 170 bream, four roach and four perch. Earlier this year, it forked out pounds 147,000 for Stephen Hendry’s maximum 147 televised break at the world snooker championship.
Blake was jailed for a total of six years, and Barrow, whom the judge said had given Miss Bennett a drink, was jailed for a total of five years, to be served in a Young Offenders’ Institution.Michael Howard’s White Paper also proposes “greater honesty in sentencing”, saying prisoners should serve the full terms of their sentences.. But under current laws, if he behaves well in prison, he is likely to be freed after serving three and a half years of his seven-year sentence. The victim, Maxine Bennett, spent two weeks in hospital recovering from her 19-hour ordeal at the end of April last year.In passing sentence last night Judge Stanley Spence, sitting at Reading Crown Court, said the three defendants, Thurston, Tracey Blake, 31, and her boyfriend Antonio Barrow, 20, possessed a “cold-blooded brutality”. Three torturers were jailed for up to seven years last night following a vicious beating in which they imprisoned a young woman in her home and forced her to eat her own vomit. The defendant singled out by the judge as the ringleader, Stuart Thurston, a 20 -year-old former public schoolboy, has previous convictions for robbery and burglary.
Under a tougher sentencing policy outlined yesterday in the Home Secretary’s White Paper, Protecting the Public, Thurston would have faced an automatic life sentence for his part in the torture. Despite falling rates of violent crime in many states and big cities, law and order remains one of the hottest political issues in the US Woe betide the candidate who argues for its repeal.. A surge in police killings in California, meanwhile, suggests “three strikes” has an unintended consequence of prompting criminals facing arrest to resort to extreme means to avoid what would otherwise be a life behind bars. But for all its defects, the law is here to stay.
“If you were writing a law to deliberately target blacks, you could hardly do it better than `three strikes’,” one of the report’s authors said last month.Critics also claim that in the longer run, the measure will simply swell a national prison population of over 1 million, three times as large as in 1980, to the point where an ageing, long-term prison population will turn some jails into old people’s homes. Critics say that it merely distorts the judicial system and makes an already overloaded prison system even more unworkable.According to one study by a San Francisco legal institute, the law hit twice as many marijuana smokers as rapists, murderers and violent criminals combined. In now famous California cases, convicts have recently been jailed for life after third offences of stealing two bicycles, and a slice of pizza It also disproportionately affects African-Americans. In California, where “three strikes” has been a hotter issue than anywhere else, Governor Pete Wilson claims it is a prime reason for two straight years of falling crime.
In all, 15 states have similar measures on the statute book, while Georgia plans to bring in an even stiffer “two strikes and you’re out” law, effective from 1999, for certain offences.
Even the Federal Government – whose jurisdiction covers only 2 per cent of crimes committed in the US each year – has got into the act, with a “three strikes” proviso included in the Crime Bill passed by Congress in August 1994 and which has thus far affected some 20 cases.Whether it is effective, however, is another matter. California followed suit a year later, spurred by uproar over the death of Polly Klaas, a 12-year-old girl abducted and murdered by a freed rapist. Detractors, however, say that the measure is unfair and in the long run, counter-productive. The first “three strikes”law, whereby a person convicted of a third felony is automatically sent to prison for life, was passed by the state of Washington in 1993.

That’s not to say that Oasis didn’t have a part, and a couple of guitars, to play. They write the songs that make the whole stadium sing, after all. It’s the coruscating power of their super-melodic anthems that galvanises us But this is nothing new. There was more to it than a team of men kicking a tune around. There was the ecstasy of all 40,000 of us knowing all the words to all the songs.
There’s the liberation of belonging, of being one of so many thousand people who are chanting the same chant, charged by the same charge, abandoning themselves cathartically to unbridled emotional expression. And then there’s buying too much alcohol and overpriced merchandise. Last weekend, it was Oasis, not Man City FC, who drew the faithful to Maine Road stadium, but the principle was much the same. As a concert it had its ups (slatherings of brass and harmonica, flawless sound quality, Liam having shaven off that beard) and downs (the sudden, anti-climactic finale of Slade’s “Cum On, Feel the Noize”, a song inferior to almost all of Oasis’s originals) but these were scarcely relevant. On poetry, he said that someone like Wilfred Owen has earnt every word: his voice is the melody of endured sorrow.

A line from his latest collection, The Spirit Level, defines his technique: it is to “catch the heart off- guard, blow it open”.. There’s more to a top- level football match than a team of men kicking a ball around. He agreed, adding that the rock-bottom quality of the species is to hold the line until some form of renewal occurs, even at the burnt-out level, the bottom layer of Troy. Eat your heart out, Abba, this sophisticated bunch can not only sing in close harmony but can also, eerily, mimic brazen trumpets.I’m sorry about today’s column. Most impressive was a piece from some Swedish singers called The Real Group. The unaccompanied songs dealt with the rigours of travelling life, liberally sprinkled with romantic moments in the heather and performed with a spirit of fire and passion. A Stewart daughter gives master- classes in the art: they must be challenging.More unaccompanied singing came from Maddy Prior In Good Voice (R2).
Should the weather turn out sunny, I’ll be embarrassing my daughter by being down the park with her wearing that hat of mine which, to me, is just a garment for stopping my pate turning red but to her has the potential for demolishing her cred with any friend of hers we see “I need the hat,” I’ll protest, though she won’t hear me. For years, Charles has been the overgrown boy prince everyone thought was weird. They acknowledge a radical split between a public rhetoric that speaks of the “loyal sporting spirit” and a reality in which people always exercise all the power they have in order to get what they want.
Indeed, Moggi’s defence could be traced back as far as the 15th-century statesman Lorenzo il Magnifico’s famous remark that in Florence “things go badly for a rich man if he doesn’t run the state”.What is at once so exhilarating and so distressing about Italy is the way, at the level of collective psychology, nothing ever changes. I will continue to watch Hellas Verona.Tim Parks’s latest novel, ‘Cleaver’, is set in South Tyrol. It was the Leonard Cohen bit that did it. There were William and Harry, all ready to “fess up” – as the young people say, I hear – to Ant and Dec about their favourite rap acts when – doh! – Dad blunders in to tell all about the famously morose Canadian singer-songwriter, a “chap” he thinks is “terrific”, and asks his sons if they have heard of him Strangely enough, they haven’t. It is a credible explanation in a country where people do not believe that power is ever exercised in a disinterested fashion.
Who would go and tell any authority what they know about a man such as Moggi unless they see that he has been absolutely discredited and destroyed? But so long as nobody believes that their individual testimony can prevail against people with power, it is the only effective way to conduct inquiries.Moggi claims he did what he did in order not to become the victim of others exercising a similar power. But it is clear that only by destroying the enchantment, as it were, of corrupt power through the press can the police hope to get honest testimony from people. Sergio Romano complained bitterly about this form of media justice in an article on the front page of Corriere della Sera. Since no one will speak to them honestly, they are obliged to spend interminable hours finding out who is using what phone and listening to conversations, many of which must be of no relevance at all. Many have complained about the way the scandal then broke, like all Italian scandals, with a sudden, massive and, for those involved, devastating release of information to the press.
Certainly the sports journalists understood, but they said nothing – no doubt they feared for their own positions.Perhaps a foreigner speaks out The coach Zdenek Zeman speaks out He is admired in public and sniggered at in private He has ruined his career The police collect evidence. A situation of almost evident corruption is allowed to continue for years. It was quite evident to anybody who followed football carefully that there was something very wrong with the refereeing Nothing was said. Routinely situations develop where everybody senses or perhaps even knows that the official version of events is the merest rhetoric, that the rules are regularly ignored. Nobody speaks out because nobody believes that doing so will alter the situation. Rather, they fear they themselves will be punished. This state of mind explains the distinctive pattern of Italian scandals. Doubtless Collina (pictured) was aware that celebrity status had given him a freedom not enjoyed by his colleagues.
Andrew Gibbs is among the Welsh hopefuls who go into this morning’s match against Australia B under the Ballymore floodlights. With just two minor games to come before the Second Test on 22 June, the Wallaby B team provide the final potent opposition. “Test places are still up for grabs,” the Newbridge flanker said “It is going to be like another international. We have got three matches to really get our game going.”
Gibbs, the No 8 Emyr Lewis, lock Paul Arnold and the stand-off Arwel Thomas are perhaps the ones most likely to be under the selectors’ microscope. The coach, Kevin Bowring, is demanding a tightening up of the Welsh defence around the fringes.
“The Australians are hitting close from first phase, slamming stuff, and we have to physically deal with that or we will be in trouble,” he said. With just one Welsh win from four games, however, the odds are that Australia B will carry just too much firepower.. Tim Henman continued to demonstrate why he is regarded as Britain’s brightest hope when he produced a gallant performance to upset the No 16 seed, Javier Frana, and reach the second round of the Stella Artois grass-court championships yesterday. Frana is unusual in that he is an Argentinian who favours grass over clay. A committed serve and volleyer, he proved an ideal opponent for Henman to test himself against.
There was little to choose between their games, but Frana definitely had the edge in size and strength.
In the end that advantage was cancelled out by Henman’s resilience under pressure, and his ability to lift his game when he most needed to, rather than slump into defeat when the going got tough.Henman began by taking a 3-0 lead, was broken back in the fifth game and held a set point at 6- 5, which he lost when he hit a poor return. Frana took the tie-break and swiftly built a 3-0 lead in the second.Frana though had problems with his serve, and Henman took advantage. The Argentinian twice double-faulted to set up break points, and on both occasions Henman accepted his opportunity. In the final set Henman sneaked ahead 4-3, double-faulted to lose his serve, but kept his head, broke again and served out for the match.”I was anxious to perform well, and to perform well and win is a bonus,” Henman said. “When you’re 3-0 down in the second set you’ve got your back against the wall, but the chances I was having I knew I would take them eventually.” If Henman defeats the Russian Andrei Olhovskiy today, he will face Thomas Muster, the top seed and world No 2, in the third round. The Austrian won his first tournament match on grass when he beat France’s Guillaume Raoux 6-7, 7-5, 7-6 after two and a half hours “I really enjoyed playing. I have no pressure on this surface because nobody has any expectations of me,” Muster said.”It’s the low bounce that gives me a problem Nothing comes by instinct. TOKYO (Reuters Life!) – Japan is counting down to its biggest legal revolution in 60 years, opening up its criminal justice system by bringing the public into court as lay judges — but many say they’d rather leave it to professionals. Despite calls for it to be re-introduced, verdicts and sentencing have been the province of professional judges since then.Neighboring South Korea has introduced a consultative jury system, but many prosecutors and even defense lawyers are reluctant to abandon the old way of doing things.Japan’s judges reach verdicts and pass sentences largely on the basis of paperwork. Many trials are very lengthy and usually end in a guilty verdict for more than 99 percent of cases. One of the aims of the new system, from which defendants cannot opt out, is to reach a verdict in a few days.PUBLIC UNEASESome Japanese reject the lay judge system entirely, and are campaigning to have it suspended. Family relations consultant Hiromi Ikeuchi says acting as a judge will be a needless burden on people who are not trained or paid to deal with the stress.”It doesn’t suit the Japanese temperament,” she said. “I would not want my own 20-year-old daughter, for example, to have to examine disturbing photographic evidence from a rape-murder.”"If they want to open the legal system up to the public, they should just broadcast trials on television,” Ikeuchi added.Others are calling for changes in the system, which comes into force months after a previous legal shift allowed victims or their families to question the defendant in court.”I supported the system at first,” said Setsuo Miyazawa, a law professor at Aoyama Gakuin University. “I thought lay people would uncover the many cases of bad police investigation, especially the way they question people,” he added. But Miyazawa says he now fears victims’ families may hold too much emotional sway over lay judges.Japan’s police are often accused of using violence and intimidation to obtain the confessions that form the basis of most convictions.

More than a thousand human genes – each present in almost everyone on the planet – are now the commercial property of US and Japanese pharmaceutical companies, according to a survey published in the scientific journal Nature today. The Japanese and the Americans have an overwhelming hold on the ownership of human DNA – the molecular messenger of heredity – according to a team led by Dr Sandy Thomas at Sussex University, Brighton. The US and the European Patent Offices have granted 1,175 patents on human DNA sequences between 1981 and 1995 Japanese and US companies have grabbed most of them. Not one European Union pharmaceutical company ranks among the top 10 DNA patent owners, the survey found. The patenting of DNA sequences has proved controversial because it pitted scientists committed to expanding the frontiers of human knowledge against commercial enterprises that want to exploit their findings by charging royalties for anyone who wants to make use of basic information on the messages encoded in DNA.Japan’s Takeda has 63 patents, followed by Genentech and Immunex of the US with 41 and 23 respectively. Firemen and ambulancemen worked on her for a while then when we thought it was right, she was taken to hospital.”Natalie’s father, Gary Hodgson, 31, who is unemployed, said: “Natalie was a joy to have around She was any man’s perfect daughter. I can’t believe she’s gone.”I was doing some work for a friend in another part of town when my brother- in-law came and said Natalie had been hurt and was in hospital. I just dropped everything and went with him to the hospital.”I tried to go down the coridoor to see her because I didn’t know then exactly what had happened but a nurse guided me into a side room and they told me what had happened.”I still can’t believe she isn’t with us anymore. I’m just numb.”Mandy was taking the kids out around the town for a few hours.
A crew from nearby Grindon Fire Station pushed back the car and they and paramedics carried out emergency first aid before she was taken to Sunderland General Hospital, but she died later.
Her mother, Mrs Mandy Potts, 26, and brother Christopher, seven, were treated for shock and minor cuts but were later able to return to their home in the city.Police said the Fiesta was being towed along Hylton Road when the rope snapped, with the car mounting the pavement and smashing into the shelter. The fire station officer, Dave Ford, said: “When we arrived there were quite a few people lying around injured and we realised the young girl was seriously hurt, so we immediately directed our first aid towards her.”We got resuscitation equipment to her then moved the car back to give us more room. He criticised Mr Marzouk for not inserting a chest drain, which would have removed air from the body and possibly saved his life. Earlier, the surgeon had insisted he ruled out the procedure because he had not known of the existence of a pneumothorax.Dr Thornington accepted the need for a bronchoscopy because of the suspicion of a blockage to the windpipe. He said he was surprised the surgeon and his two anaesthetists had diagnosed tracheo malacia.”It is unusual because the child had not shown any typical signs of the rare disorder such as a sharp cough,” he said. The jury are expected to return a verdict today.. A six-year-old girl died after a car being towed broke free and crashed into a bus shelter yesterday.
Natalie Potts, who was with her mother and older brother, was trapped between the Ford Fiesta and the shelter in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. The diagnosis of tracheo malacia was mistakenly entertained.”He said acute bronchilitis was the underlying cause of death but it was also due to the pneumothorax, a gap between the lung and the windpipe, which was prompted by the artificial ventilation. “The effects of the treatment contributed materially to his death.”Roger Thornington, a consultant paediatric anaesthetist from the Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool, called to give expert evidence, agreed the pneumothorax occurred during the treatment. Despite efforts to resuscitate him, he died at 9.12 p.m.A pathologist, Dr David Rushton, said the artificial ventilation performed by the doctors contributed to his death “I could not find any evidence of a congenital disease.
Mr Marzouk, who performed the operation, said he made Robert a priority, but was unable to find a blockage obstructing his breathing.”On withdrawal of the bronchoscope it became clear there was a severe degree of tracheo malacia,” he said. His condition was deteriorating due to a tear in his left lung, which caused air to fill his body and his heart stopped twice. He said it was a birth defect that would have killed him sooner or later.Earlier, the couple had taken Robert to Sandwell hospital, near their home in Rowley Regis, West Midlands. Concerned at the “chaos” that they found in the casualty department, they drove him 10 miles to Good Hope hospital, in Sutton Coldfield. After a suspected blockage to the airways, caused by a mucus plug or a foreign body was diagnosed, he was transferred to Birmingham Children’s hospital. But on arrival no beds were available, so he was sent to Heartland Hospital for a bronchostomy. A paediatric pathologist, David Rushton, explained that the artificial ventilation performed by doctors during surgery had contributed to his death, on 7 June last year. His parents Julie Benton, 23, and Timothy Dawes, 32, were told by the consultant chest surgeon, Joseph Khalil Marzouk, that Robert had died of tracheo malacia, a congenital disorder in which the cartilage holding open the windpipe collapses.

Who can blame him, for he could have been otherwise occupied with his Shakespearean library and a bottle of sherry. This is hardly the stuff of many a contemporary French novel. But Lang’s grasp of the English scene is so acute that Blain has no truck with the Guardian’s promise to take a few pictures and then settle up. “Balderdash! It’s cash up front.” TV crews arrive, their work is duly screened, and the newsreader seeks Peter Jenkins’s opinion. “Jenkins always wears a fluorescent green bow tie, which might well be the first thing he puts on in the morning when he gets out of bed.”The success of Lang’s book is that one believes it Hazy notions of what really happened at the riot are ousted. One is caught up in the events which follow Henri welcoming a 50-year-old virgin, Louise Baker, from an Anglican journal, and duly finding that “her thighs grip me like a pair of tongs”.No such events find a place in Judge Tumin’s report on the prison, which finds its due place here. As does a long account of the way in which a disgruntled prison cook can vex the guards by serving up food that is sure to agitate the entrails to make the atmosphere “unbearably loud and unbearably smelly”.Rarely can there have been a novel which blends so piquantly Shakespeare, food, sex, a little gardening, and something more. With his firmly-rooted frivolity, Luc Lang creates one of the most beguilingly repulsive characters since Anthony Burgess’s Enderby came to life in a Hove bedroom with “a posterior riposte”..
Jane Gardam has long been a specialist in the frets and intoxications of adolescence, and her latest novel returns to this beguiling topic. She also returns to the summer of 1946, a seaside town in Yorkshire, and the fortunes of three young girls in the overbrimming months between school and university. The schoolfriends are Hester (Hetty) Fallowes, Una Vane and Lieselotte Klein, the last a German-Jewish refugee.
All three are, in a sense, casualties of war, the two English girls because their fathers have come home shell-shocked from the trenches.
Unfitted for ordinary life, one has opted for employment as an intellectual grave-digger; the other bowed out of life altogether when his daughter was nine. “There were odd folk everywhere after 1918,” observes Gardam’s earlier novel Crusoe’s Daughter.Lieselotte, a more direct casualty, had arrived on the last trainload of refugee children in summer 1939. When the novel opens, letters have just announced that all three girls have gained state scholarships to university: two to Cambridge and one to London.Family relations, whether overwhelming or all but obliterated, are important to the plot, leading each of the trio to veer off in a particular direction. Hetty goes to the Lake District to bone up on the English classics; Una to various remote Youth Hostels with her cycling companion, Ray; and Lieselotte first to London, then the West Coast of America, as the time of transformation gets going. The Flight of the Maidens is (among other things) about ways of achieving emancipation, and the price exacted.
“Youth is a blunder” reads the epigraph (by Disraeli) to Jane Gardam’s novel Bilgewater. A certain amount of juvenile blundering and miscalculation goes on here. At times, the narrative rushes into a kind of hectic bottleneck mode, though counteracted by the sheer buoyancy of the undertaking. The separate journeys take in a few of the agitated confrontations the author does so well: between her central characters and imposing, mad old people, or outspoken young ones.Hetty, among the mountains and lakes, first stumbles on a table on which reposes a copy of The Perfumed Garden, and then comes face-to-face with a scatty family named Fitzurse. Una, meanwhile, is failing to relinquish her virginity owing to constant interruptions in the hostels. Lieselotte is acquiring a refurbished persona, and coming to her senses in a wood near the Pacific, where – in the manner of a fairy tale – a German banker befriends her and arranges her return to Cambridge to take up her place. All this, and more, is recounted in the author’s usual luminous and anarchic style.

I mean, we still have a disconnect because of the attitude that men have about being uncomfortable about being the objects of women’s fantasies and gaze.” That would explain why men would be less likely than women to dream about one day appearing in the pages of Playgirl (and why there aren’t any Boys Gone Wild). But it doesn’t explain why women would be buying the magazine, the rabbit-head merchandise, the shtick. “To say that the gap is closing isn’t to say that the gap has closed,” she replied. “A lot of women read the magazine,” Christie Hefner told me when I went to visit her in Chicago.
“We know they read it because we get letters from them.” And this was proof, she said, that “the post-sexual-revolution, post-women’s-movement generation that is now out there in their late twenties and early thirties has just a more grown-up, comfortable, natural attitude about sex and sexiness that is more in line with where guys (omega) were a couple generations before. Because of the feminist movement, women today – on both sides of the Atlantic – obviously have staggeringly different opportunities and expectations than our mothers did: we have attained a degree of hard-won (and still threatened) freedom in our personal lives; we are gradually penetrating the highest levels of the work force; we get to go to college and play sports and run for government office. But to look around, you’d think all any of us want to do is rip off our clothes and shake it It no longer makes sense to just blame men. Mia Leist and plenty of other women are behind the scenes, not just in front of the cameras, making decisions, making money and shouting “We want boobs.” Playboy is a case in point.
