A modern left-of-centre government should pursue the active management and regulation of the global economy. It should promote the quality of life by protecting social space, personal time and the natural environment. It should redistribute opportunity, including both income and assets. And it should provide tax-funded, user-focused and accountable public services for all.Will the manifesto achieve such ideological clarity? It is not there yet, but the noises emerging from both No 10 and the Treasury are encouraging.
