The surprise news comes just weeks after Argos announced that Mike Smith, its chief executive, was unable to fulfil his duties due to ill-health The company also lost its director of toy buying last week. It said Mr Stewart was going of his own volition after 16 years on the board.Mr Stewart was paid pounds 200,000 last year but this will be increased to pounds 360,000 from the beginning of April in order to enable a higher pension payment He will also be paid a one-off bonus of pounds 196,000. ARGOS’ defence against the pounds 1.6bn hostile bid from Great Universal Stores (GUS) suffered a big setback yesterday when it emerged that Bob Stewart, its finance director, would take early retirement by the end of the year.
A combined group would also create a research and development powerhouse with annual expenditure of a least pounds 2bn. City observers were also excited about the combination of Glaxo’s and SmithKline’s long-term drug development programmes which could have produced a lucrative pipeline of new treatments.Glaxo’s shares rose 19p to 1757p yesterday, well short of 1985p, the price the stock achieved when merger talks were first announced SmithKline’s shares slipped 18p to 748p yesterday.. Glaxo is believed to have become increasingly concerned that Mr Leschly and Jean Pierre Garnier, SmithKline’s operations director, were seeking to dominate the company.SmithKline is run in a centralised way with Mr Leschly keeping a firm grip on all the group’s divisions That sat uneasily with Glaxo’s devolved structure. Although Richard Sykes retains a tight rein on the business, much more responsibility is divested to divisional managers.Glaxo was worried that Mr Leschly would have sought to run large swathes of the combined pharmaceuticals group from his American base in Philadelphia.Analysts estimate that a merger would bring costs savings of up to pounds 1.5bn a year.

From the apparently inexhaustible pages of Marvel Comics come no fewer than 10 original characters to fight over real issues such as good and evil, tolerance and tyranny, and the right to cause Force 10 gales in a built-up area. Bryan Singer’s X-Men takes its moral cue from the spirit of the original strip, which reflected the turmoil of the Civil Rights movement during the Sixties, but the film bases its style on the very latest advances in computer graphic imagery.A comic-strip fantasia with allegorical implications about the struggle for equality? Well, it sounds promising, and the movie sets up its conflict as an ominous face-off between two mutant leaders, played with ringing gravitas by Shakespearean stalwarts, Patrick Stewart and Sir Ian McKellen.Humankind can’t bear much reality, as we know, but really can’t stand mutants. It’s this hostility that has convinced Magneto (the McKellen character) that the only way to make the world safe for mutants is to annex humanity altogether – the doctrine of do unto others before they do it to you.

Sometimes they even have to go to sit in church for a few weeks so that they can qualify.If it is this stealth-evangelism that motivates the church, then it stinks. In the context of a large state-subsidised expansion of church schools, either there must be a decision to waive any faith qualification altogether, or else the church must recognise that it is engaged in a huge operation designed to turn honest parents into prating hypocrites.

In the first place I think that parents should have the right, if they really want to, to make faith an important part of their children’s schooling. And even if I didn’t believe in this right, I would have to recognise that many would still find ways of educating their children in this manner, but outside the state system. Second, to have different types of schools adds to educational biodiversity, increasing the chances of accidentally conducting successful experiments in education, which can then be copied elsewhere.Even so, they are not really what we need. Parents, after all, aren’t asking for more religion in schools or more religious schools.
If that’s what they wanted then they’d be taking their kids to St Frideswide’s for Sunday School instruction every week. What parents like about religious schools (I think), and what makes some of those schools successful is that they are governed, in part at least, by a transcendent ethic; something that makes education different to shopping or going to discos or to other aspects of behaviour in a consumer society.Schools need this. Good schools often tend to produce it on their own, identifying music or sports or drama or art as a speciality of the house, a point of pride, a claim to excellence. The recognition of this is what lies behind the Government’s desire to increase the number of schools “specialising” in sport, technology, language or arts and media. If this strategy works, it is hard to see what additional purpose is served by setting up extra denominational schools.But the long-term logic of specialism and ethos is this: once the basics have been agreed (as they have been in most primary schools) then the time has come to let schools loose, to teach as they wish, to experiment, to work hard and to have fun.
