Manchester City striker Robinho told Brazilian radio today Sunday that he is about to leave the English Premier League club and the president of his former team Santos in Brazil said transfer talks were already underway.Robinho told radio Bandeirantes that his goal scored at Scunthorpe in the FA Cup would probably be the Brazilian forward’s last for the club.He admitted not playing at top form for City, but complained that he was not being allowed to play regularly. ”The coach was very sincere with me and said that I would play every other match,” Robinho said. He will likely be an important piece to the Vikings gameplan against the Saints, but most importantly, Favre, Harvin, and the rest of the Minnesota Vikings define the word team and it will show against the Saints.. Dating back to September 27, 1992, he has started 285 consecutive games, 309 including playoffs. Hickson and Ilgauskas for Stoudamire.Warriors – Raja Bell and Speedy Claxton for Stoudamire.Pistons – Tayhsaun Prince or Charlie Villanueva for Stoudamire.Bulls – Jerome James, Tyrus Thomas, Taj Gibson, and Jannero Pargo for Jason Collins and Stoudamire. This season could definitely be the year he wins his second Super Bowl. Sounds like the perfect time bow out, right? Well, not if your name is Brett Favre. If you ask me, barring some injury, he will be back. Which current low-profile wide receivers might follow their lead and become impact players in the 2010 NFL season? In order to answer that question, I think it’s important to analyze why the aforementioned players were successful. You think you have more than any group of humans could possibly consume in one week Trust us. If a charge is brought upon someone, the burden of proof is on the accuser, not the defendant. I was a bit disappointed at the idea to repeat what happened at RR as a way to keep the ball rolling for this feud, but I’m still interested so I guess that doesn’t matter (Aside from that, Vince vs Bret has to just stop. Kyle Vanden Bosch has been an absolute warrior, but he is 31 years old, will be a free agent, and seems to have lost a step Jevon Kearse is done physically and mentally. And that’s funny, because he later won it.And who can’t forget The Dirty Bird dance? Whoever the QB ends up being, he needs to take care of the ball better that his predecessor; if not fans once again maybe calling for another new coordinator  Your thoughts?. Jacques Smith (4 star, pictured above):”Jacques is a huge force when it comes to getting to the QB,” H.S coach Benny Monroe said.Indeed he was as he compiled 22 sacks in his last two years of high school football in Ooeltewah, Tennessee.Luckily enough I was able to see this tremendous athlete play on numerous occasions over the last couple of years.Let me tell you something though when you get up next to this kid you might just pass out he is so big and scary looking.Smith has many great aspects in the way he plays the game as he has great speed, strength, agility, and lateral pursuit. He just needs to put on a lot more weight as he is only listed at 225 pounds. When he gets that weight put on with the help on Tennessee’s trainers look for him to be a huge force in the pass rushing game.Corey Miller (4star):Miller is one of the country’s best DL prospects from the 2010 class, as Rivals has him ranked as the 5th best defensive end in the country.Corey has great speed, size, and agility. He was an ESPN Under Armour All-American as a Senior. He could quite possibly earn a starting job as a freshman.John Brown (4 star):Brown is a JuCo transfer from Northeast Mississippi Community College. He has unbelievable size as he is listed at 6′2 300 pounds. His strength is his greatest upside while his downside is his quickness. He could factor into the Vols starting lineup this season.. If he gets his speed up, he could even make it into the starting lineups later in his career.Upside:- Seems very coachable.- Always around the ball making plays.- Recognizes plays well.-Takes good tackling angles to make up for speed.Downside:- Lack of speed.- Better safety than corner.- Sometimes he tackles too high.Final Analysis:While there is up side to Jackson’s ability, the addition of Cooper dampens his chances at being effective early on.He may contribute at some time and may become a play maker, even. With his nose for the ball, anything is possible.. He caught an acrobatic flea-flicker from Pierre Thomas to Drew Brees that netted him 44 yards.  Let me know if you agree or disagree on how the Wrestlemania card is going to come together or what you would like to see instead as anything is still possible at this point. Random Thoughts:-  I actually found the Jerry Springer skit on raw pretty damn funny. Rutgers (11-12)   The Scarlet Knights might win another conference game this season. Now that the chaos that is National Signing Day is over, it’s time to calm down and just relish a moment of peace and quiet in the world of college football.Just kidding.Of course, now that National Signing Day is over, it’s time to look over our team’s recruiting class and scrutinize and judge it in every way possible.Such is the life of college football.

But which one is better, and how good can each of them be? In two separate games Sacramento’s 118-114 victory over the New York Knicks and Milwaukee’s 97-77 victory over the New Jersey Nets I set out to answer that question.
Only two top-class saves by the Southampton goalkeeper, Antti Niemi, prevented a higher losing margin.Southampton gained a sixth-minute advantage when Rory Delap’s shot was parried by Maik Taylor only for Brett Ormerod to reach the rebound and score. I have been working 31 years without a break, my wife and I are grandparents now and I’m going to spend some time away from the game.”I do plan to come back into football, although I do not know in what capacity.” Strachan’s touchline performance was as animated as ever but his side could not produce the victory that might have diluted the suspicion that his impending departure could send their season into decline. They are without a win and have scored one goal in five games and although they began as if unfazed, taking an early lead, Birmingham equalised quickly and were thereafter the better side. Mart Poom, though, untroubled in the Sunderland goal since the interval, remained so to the end.Sunderland 1 Nottingham Forest 0 Arca 38Half-time: 1-0 Attendance: 26,340. Rupert Lowe, the Southampton chairman, admitted last night that manager Gordon Strachan may leave the club before the end of the season if his decision to take a break from football has a negative effect on results. If Sunderland’s shooting was less than accurate, though, Forest’s was lamentably absent. For all their neat approach play, they struggled to get past Phil Babb and Joachim Bjorklund at the heart of the Sunderland defence. With quarter of an hour left, Hart sent on Eoin Jess and Eugen Bopp.
They have gone 11 League matches without a win now and yesterday’s defeat was their fourth in a row in First Division action. However, it was Preston who quickly compiled a succession of attacks, David James deflecting a drive from David Healy with his feet, that gave no hint of their falling behind after 19 minutes. In only the Hammers’ second meaningful attack, Matthew Etherington played an inviting pass for Connolly to run on to and, in the goalmouth, he swept the ball underneath Gould’s dive. It was a miss that set the tone for the rest of the afternoon.A scrappy second half began with Stewart shooting wide of the target and continued with a series of wayward attempts on the Forest goal Stewart, Smith and Kyle were all culpable. The reshuffle had the desired effect, bringing a cutting edge to Sunderland’s play and, in the 38th minute, a goal. Marcus Stewart came within a whisker of turning in a low right-wing delivery from Jason McAteer, the diving Ward clawing the ball wide for a corner. Arca scored it, burying a left-footed shot from the left edge of the Forest penalty area after Ward had blocked a Stewart drive. It was the Argentinian’s fourth goal of the season and it ought to have been followed by the second of the day for Sunderland, Kyle ballooning the ball over the bar with Ward’s goal at his mercy in first-half injury time. Wright also headed wide, but Sunderland were running out of attacking steam by the half-hour mark. With Forest starting to dictate much of the play with their methodical passing, McCarthy sent on Kevin Kyle for Thomas Butler and switched Tommy Smith from a central striking role to the right wing.
The home fans celebrated but the referee, Martin Atkinson, consulted a linesman and then signalled for a goal-kick. It was a close call for Sunderland but it was Forest who were counting their blessings eight minutes later. From wide and deep on the right, Arca curled a left-footed free-kick around a packed penalty box and into the top left corner. The free-kick had been indirect and, though Stephen Wright claimed he had got his head to the ball, neither official detected a validating touch.McCarthy was left fuming on the touchline, but at least the perceived injustice stirred his team to life. They are 21st in the table now, four points above Derby and the relegation zone.”It’s disappointing,” Hart said afterwards “We can play good football We can pass the ball. But we need results.” Forest did beat West Bromwich in the FA Cup last week and they made a promising start yesterday. With five minutes on the clock, Gareth Williams rattled Mart Poom’s left-hand post with a rasping drive after Darren Ward’s up-field punt and Gareth Taylor’s knock-down.

The word psychotic is often used in the wrong context, often accompanied with screaming tabloid headlines. Psychosis is frightening mostly for the sufferer – it is one of the most terrifying experiences I can think of. You feel as though you are being continually persecuted and you live in fear I am only a danger to myself and not to other people. The Samaritans and the social services out-of-hours team were top of the list.It does not help that most people have completely the wrong idea about a psychotic person. Every patient looks forward to ward round when you get to see your psychiatrist. I had two good psychiatrists, one of whom was shrewd enough to know that despite the agreed diagnosis of psychosis, I was also suffering from severe depression and thinking about ending my life. He asked me: “If I had a pill that would end your life quickly and painlessly, would you take it?” My answer was yes and the Venlafaxine dose was duly increased.
I now use that question to assess whether I am suicidal or not. Most days I am but I will survive.By the time I was discharged my daughter had moved back home for the summer holidays so I didn’t go back to an empty flat It was a good thing I felt strange, almost in shock. I was still depressed and spent the first days worrying whether I would cope with life on the outside In hospital everything is done for you. You don’t have to think about food or when you should take your medication.
My social worker gave me a list of numbers that I could phone in case I felt the need to talk. I became quite friendly with a woman who had worked as a journalist.Hospital is a safe place but boring. I was now allowed to leave the hospital and I used to go drinking in the local pub (against hospital rules) with one other patient. I actually turned up at the ward roaring drunk after one drinking session. I missed music and I rarely ventured into the television lounge – although the place to be was definitely the smoking lounge where most of the other patients congregated As time went on I got to know some of them. It was to take three months to see me lead a normal life again and my saving grace was to be found not in talking therapies, but through the use of strong psychiatric drugs. Risperidone (an antipsychotic) and Venlafaxine (an antidepressant) are responsible for allowing me to lead a normal life again. When, after my section expired, I was transferred back to the open ward I still spent most of my time in my room, talking to myself and listening to my voices.
I was judged to be a danger to myself rather than to other people: “The section is justified only in the interests of her health and safety”. I was always afraid of going to bed at night because there was no lock on the bedroom door. While on the locked ward I had a mental health review because I challenged the hospital’s right to hold me. I still could not understand why they were preventing me from leaving and giving me drugs that I didn’t want. When I was sectioned it was on a Section 2, which lasts for a month, and a week before this section was due to expire, the review found me to be suffering from a disorder “of both a nature and degree at this time that warrants continuation of Section 2″.
The locked ward was an even more frightening experience – nine men and only one other woman. After the window-breaking incident I was transferred to a locked ward where I spent two weeks surrounded by other severely unwell patients. The police in Eastbourne were impostors and so were the hospital staff.I still believed I was being poisoned The only thing I would eat was Bueno chocolate bars I would consume 10 in one day. The staff had to buy these along with a bottle of Diet Coke with lemon, which was the only drink I believed I could safely have. They tried to encourage me to eat hospital food but when I did it tasted strange.
US special forces have attached themselves to Kurdish military units to call in air strikes on Iraqi army positions when the Kurds advance at the start of the invasion of Iraq. They will accompany peshmerga (Kurdish soldiers) as they fight their way towards the Kirkuk and Mosul in northern Iraq, but the Kurds are not expected to enter the cities because of fears that this would provoke a Turkish invasion. The US strategy has shifted towards greater reliance on the lightly armed but experienced Kurdish forces to bolster the “northern front” against the Iraqi army. American hopes of sending a land army through Turkey to invade northern Iraq were dashed when the Turkish parliament refused to allow the US to use Turkish bases.Asked if each peshmerga unit would have US soldiers with it, a top Kurdish military official said: “That is what is happening.” The US is now playing a crucial but secretive role in northern Iraq, using special forces in the same way they were used against the Taliban in Afghanistan. They will support the Kurdish infantry with massive US air power.Masrur Barzani, the chief of KDP intelligence, said yesterday: “It would not be in our interests to take decisions without co-ordinating with our friends.” General Miran told The Independent: “We have a strategy to control the Kurdish areas under the rule of the Iraqi regime. We are not talking about the cities of Kirkuk and Mosul, but the countryside is where we will operate.” Massoud Barzani, the head of the KDP, said, however, that he hoped a Kurd would raise the flag of victory over Kirkuk. The Iraqi army’s northern front is held by the 5th and 1st Corps backed by two elite Republican Guard divisions, though these are beginning to send their armoured units south, closer to Baghdad.Kurdish commanders stress they cannot move without American air cover, under the control of forward air controllers with the peshmerga, which they expect to knock out Iraqi artillery and tanks. The US attack on northern Iraq is to be supplemented by its airborne brigades. Experienced Kurdish officers say it is likely that the US will strike from eastern Jordan, taking Iraqi army positions on the northern Euphrates, such as Haditha, which has a good airport.
They believe the cities of Mosul and Kirkuk are not ultimately defensible and Saddam Hussein does not trust the regular army divisions stationed there to fight.Iraq’s much feared security forces are reported to have taken their confidential papers to Baghdad for safe-keeping. Arab settlers in formerly Kurdish villages are preparing to leave, even dismantling heavy equipment such as water pumps before they move south.Military preparations within the Kurdish safe haven in northern Iraq, long defended by US and British air power, are increasingly visible and there are signs that war is very close. In the mountain-top town of Salahudin yesterday, 600 soldiers with Kalashnikovs and rockets marched down the main street. At the front line, peshmerga were assembling in ever greater numbers. The Kurds and the US are anxious not to offend Turkey, which has said that it will launch its own invasion rather than see the Kurds occupy Kirkuk or Mosul. But MasoudBarzani said he was determined to see up to 300,000 Kurds return to areas from which they were ethnically cleansed by Baghdad over the past 30 years.Kurdish leaders, who will be part of an Iraqi opposition delegation, are expected to have a critical tripartite two-day meeting with Turkish and US officials starting today in Ankara. The Kurds will try to allay Turkish fears about Kurds declaring independence, taking the northern cities or refusing to recognise the rights of the Turkomans in Kirkuk. The US, originally willing to countenance a Turkish invasion of northern Iraq in return for American use of Turkish bases, has now reversed its position and is pressing Turkey not to attack. Masoud Barzani warned: “If the Turks come in, there will be a war, it will be major war.”.
The British Army, ill-prepared and unenthusiastic to act in a humanitarian role, could be confronted by a “catastrophic” crisis of hungry and homeless civilians if Tony Blair orders the troops into southern Iraq. The area is likely to be the scene of bloody infighting and revenge attacks against Iraqi secret police.Unlike other parts of Iraq, there are no international aid agencies or NGOs (non-governmental organisations) operating in the south. The majority of the population lives off rations provided by the UN oil-for-food programme. Most observers believe this intricately organised system would be severely disrupted in the event of a military operation.Although aid groups have stored tonnes of food and emergency supplies in countries surrounding Iraq, The Independent has learnt that there are no such supplies in Kuwait, which borders Iraq to the south-east. The Kuwaiti government has made minimal provision to help Iraqi refugees and says it will not open its borders to them.

An analysis of the delicate balance between the billions of neurons in our skulls, and the need to supply the axons (which connect them like cables) with blood and fatty insulation shows we can only improve our data processing ability by 20 per cent at most. The BT research, published in New Scientist, found that to expand our thinking ability, the 100 billion neurons in the brain would have to be larger, so they could pass signals more quickly. But that would in turn demand a greater blood supply – which, given the constricted size of the brain cavity, could only be achieved by limiting the growth of the neurons.
A larger skull might allow both more neurons and a bigger blood supply, but transmission of data would be slower.. An American-style “zero tolerance” anti crime initiative in Scotland was yesterday hailed a success by police chiefs who said it had helped cut offences in the force region to their lowest level in 15 years. For the past three months Strathclyde Police has been clamping down on minor crimes in the belief that this will reduce the number of more serious offences and reduce public fear.
During the first stage of the “Spotlight” initiative more than 200,000 extra police hours were spent on the streets.
During the offensive, 12 offences were spotlighted. Since the start of the scheme crimes of violence, indecency, dishonesty, car theft, and vandalism were down but crime covering drugs, obstructing police and overall nuisance rose.. Scientists have taken a giant leap for gastronomy by growing the highly prized golden chantrelle wild mushroom in a greenhouse. Until now, the fungus has defied all attempts at cultivation and can only be harvested from pine forests. Large quantities are imported from the United States because it is a variety in decline throughout Europe. The team, led by Eric Danell from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Uppsala, reported in the science journal Nature that they had transferred pine seedlings carrying the fungus into pots in March, 1995.
Five fruit-bodies emerged during the following spring and autumn.
The scientists believe their technique could be applied to other endangered species, such as Tricholoma matsutake, which is the most valuable mushroom in the world, costing about pounds 60 each.. Naomi Smith, the schoolgirl found murdered in a children’s park, had a crucial “DNA autograph” on her mutilated body, a jury heard yesterday. Tests showed that saliva found in a bite on 15-year-old Naomi’s body fitted the DNA profile of Edwin Hopkins, 20, Birmingham Crown Court was told. Mr Hopkins had an “incredibly rare” DNA profile found only in one in every 250 million people, said Colman Treacy QC, for the prosecution.
His teeth were also a perfect match for the bite mark – and his sister, Julie, gave police vital evidence about his whereabouts on the night of Naomi’s death, said Mr Treacy as he outlined the prosecution case to the jury of six men and six women. Mr Hopkins, of Ansley Common, near Nuneaton, Warwickshire, denies murder. Naomi vanished after popping out to post a letter in her home village of Ansley Common in September 1995. Her throat had been cut and she had been sexually assaulted.
“It was probably better than if the killer had left his autograph,” Mr Treacy said. “Because what was found in the area around the breast provides some of the most valuable evidence for the prosecution in this case.” The trial continues..
The Conservative Party’s poster campaign featuring the “demon eyes” has beaten Wonderbra to win the latest “most talked about advert” accolade, a survey revealed yesterday. The pre-election campaign, devised by the M&C Saatchi agency, gained more national press coverage than any other promotion in the last three years. The advertisements, which included pictures of the Labour leader Tony Blair with superimposed red eyes, have topped the poll. Wonderbra was second and Labour’s “Same Old Tory Lies” campaign came sixth.
Martin Loat, managing director of Propeller Marketing Communications, which conducted the survey, said: “Like it or loathe it, the Demon Eyes icon was a stunning advertising image that captured the public imagination.”. Iris Bentley, who campaigned tirelessly to clear the name of her brother Derek, hanged for the murder of a policeman in 1953, has died.
If only there were a good map of London, I promised myself, I would throw the bloody A to Z on the fire. Then I discovered the Nicholson Street Finder and threw my London A to Z on the fire There was only one thing wrong with the Street Finder The name was boring A to Z was a great name on an unsatisfactory book. It was messily laid out, and had far too many black lines, the street names were often illegible, and it drove me mad. When I lived in London and cycled everywhere, I naturally bought a copy of the London A to Z, because that was the map that everyone told me about I did not like the London A to Z. The other is called map-reading.Even when it comes to maps, we get brainwashed into thinking certain maps are better than others. We have been so programmed to believe that SatNav is the way to do things that we forget that there is a better way Well, two better ways One is knowing the road.
“There are several quite good ways of getting to London from here,” I said, “but that is not one of them. That is not a way which anyone who lived here would choose, unless he was very fond of mud, cow manure and stones.”
“Blimey, if you know the way,” said the driver, “fair enough. Just tell me where to go, and I’ll switch this thing off.”It takes a bit of free thinking to do or say something like that these days. It might have been the most direct route, but also the worst. It was an absolutely lunatic itinerary, going down tiny country lanes and apparently through at least one farm before getting to a motorway. I was once considered important enough for a car to be sent to get me from my home and drive me the hundred miles to London. It was a posh car, with a driver and a navigation system which told him how to get everywhere in the world.
I asked him out of curiosity what the system recommended as the best way to get back to London Obligingly, he showed me I couldn’t believe my eyes. And if he decides the police were offside, the family of Jean Charles de Menezes can rest assured they’ll be offered a free kick Then they can all get on with their lives
More from Mark Steel. Which is why the Health and Safety Executive will probably decide there’s insufficient evidence to bring any health and safety charges But the case will be dealt with – by a football referee. A team would plant a device, then they’d all stand by the doorway saying “After you,” “No, after you,” and they’d never get out of the place before it went off.The conclusion seems to be we’re now in such a state of danger from terrorists, that the only way to be safe is to shoot people who are nothing to do with terrorists.
They would smile and say ‘I’d like a pound of your finest Semtex please’, because whatever else, they had manners, not like today’s lot.”Maybe this explains why so many of the IRA blew themselves up with their own bombs. Their home life will be in tatters. And then we were told that mistakes like this are understandable in today’s new unprecedented lethal climate. This is a common line now from the police and the Government, that “today’s terrorists are far more dangerous than the IRA”. They seem on the verge of saying “At least the IRA were gentlemen. And as if that isn’t enough, now they’ve got to live with having got away with it.
Naively I assumed he meant this was because they were deeply sorry about the event, but instead he said it was because they would have to live with the fact they were accused at all “for the rest of their lives”, and this “would affect their home life”.Isn’t that always the bugger when you shoot someone through the head? And for the police in this case it’s even worse than normal, because as well as having to live with shooting someone, they’ve also got to live with having made up stories about De Menezes wearing a big jacket and vaulting over the barriers as well. Now you just ring up the police and say, “There’s a bloke called Dave with long blond hair who works in the off licence and he’s planning to blow up Tower Bridge,” and by night time he’ll be wasted, or at least someone will, probably a bald woman in the pet shop who they thought was Dave by mistake. After the announcement, a spokesman for the police was on London News, saying the officers responded to the news they wouldn’t be charged “with dignity but without jubilation”. No longer do prospective murderers have to spend months preparing alibis and faking documents like in an episode of Columbo. So they only became convinced he was a terrorist when he got on the Underground. Their thinking seems to have been “Terrorists blow themselves up on the Underground, and he’s got on the Underground. Well that’s too much of a coincidence, he must be a bomber.”Or maybe, like in Forest Gate, they were acting on a tip-off In which case this is the future of murder.

Our delicate sensibilities have prevented us from pronouncing its name: radical Islam. Not Islam as practiced peacefully by millions of the faithful around the world but a specific fringe political movement, dedicated to imposing its fanatical ideology on its own societies and destroying the society of its enemies, the greatest of which is the United States.Israel, too, is an affront to radical Islam and thus, of course, must be eradicated But it is the smallest of fish. The heart of the beast – with its military in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Turkey and the Persian Gulf; with a culture that “corrupts” Islamic youth; with an economy and technology that dominates the world – is the United States. That is why we were struck so savagely. How do we know? Who else trains cadres of fanatical suicide murderers who go to their deaths joyfully? And the average terrorist does not co-ordinate four hijackings within one hour. Nor fly a plane into the tiny silhouette of a single building For that, you need skilled pilots seeking martyrdom. That is not a large pool to draw from. These are the shock troops of the enemy And the enemy has many branches. Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas and Islamic Jihad in Israel, Osama bin Laden’s organization headquartered in Afghanistan, and various Arab “liberation fronts” based in Damascus.
And then there are the governments: Iran, Iraq, Syria and Libya among them. Which one was responsible? We will find out soon enough. But when we do, there should be no talk of bringing these people to “justice”. An open act of war demands a military response, not a judicial one.Military response against whom? It is absurd to make war on the individuals who send these people The terrorists cannot exist in a vacuum They need a territorial base of sovereign protection For 30 years we have avoided this truth. If Mr bin Laden was behind this, then Afghanistan is our enemy Any country that harbours and protects him is our enemy We must carry their war to them. The “long peace” is over. We sought this war no more than we sought war with Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan or Cold War with the Soviet Union. But when war was pressed upon the greatest generation, it rose to the challenge. The question is: Will we? The writer is a Pulitzer prize-winning columnist for ‘The Washington Post’.

I have just returned from Afghanistan, and cannot avoid a growing feeling of dread at what may be about to befall the people I have left behind. The bellicose statements being issued by America and her allies about revenge and retaliation for Tuesday’s horrific terrorist attacks against New York and Washington seem to be softening up Western electorates for some kind of massive military action against the Afghan people.
Because of these threats, aid organisations have been forced to pull out their foreign workers – fearing either that they may be caught in the expected raids, or that they would be attacked because they are Westerners after the Nato bombers have flown away. The effects of this withdrawal could be infinitely more tragic and devastating than the worst that a wounded America may throw at this troubled, long-suffering country. For, although it has gone largely unreported, Afghanistan is in the grip of a three-year drought and on the verge of mass starvation.
Figures from the UN-run World Food Programme claim that, by the end of the year, 5.5 million people will be entirely dependent on food aid to survive the hard winter – that’s a quarter of the population. As the Christian Aid programme officer responsible for Afghanistan, I have been helping to supply food and seeds to communities in desperate need. In a few weeks, the winter snows will come, cutting off the hundreds of isolated villages whose only links to the outside world are rutted dirt tracks Without seeds, they will be unable to replant for next year. Without food aid now, thousands could be dead before the spring.Already fears on the ground about this pending catastrophe are filtering through. Only yesterday, I received this message from one of the local organisations funded by Christian Aid: “What will happen to the people if aid agencies remain reluctant to resume full operations? The consequences are quite clear that people who are already suffering would be the victims. And if any military action is taken, Afghan staff and civilians will be in real danger.”Terrorism is the worst thing and it shows how blind these people are as human beings. But if the leaders do not have patience and tolerance, they can only do further damage.”This, I think you must agree, is not a voice from a country of dedicated international terrorists or religious fanatics.
After all, there’s no point trying to be a Kate Winslet if you’re a Miriam Margolyes, is there? You have to capitalise on your strengths. Paul Grayson and Andy Gomarsall stepped into the vacuum in Rome and showed that they are just as capable of releasing the streamlined Jason Robinson, albeit with the occasional and inevitable lack of understanding.Grayson, who scored a rare try against Italy in his 20-point haul, may lack the laser-guided accuracy of Wilkinson with his goalkicking, but he again offered evidence that he is solid and tactically adept when presented with a challenge which had all eyes boring into his soul in search of imperfections. The depth of England in this area goes down to the strata at the earth’s core. For many teams, the loss of a Jonny Wilkinson and an injury to Matt Dawson, from which he has now recovered although he was restricted to the bench, would have stretched a coach’s ingenuity to maintain a cohesive midfield link Not for Woodward.
Certainly, there is much to build on.Yet, for all the dash of the Scotland winger Simon Danielli, who secured a rare Scotland try in recent years against the Auld Enemy, in the second period, together with the inspiration of captain Chris Paterson, the relatively inexperienced Scotland back line would always prove vulnerable to their England counterparts. In fact, as it transpired, the home faithful were rather more concerned about lauding their own team who performed with sufficient attacking flair to suggest that last Saturday’s defeat by Wales was an aberration. For sheer courage and spirit, and no absence of splendidly calculating play, Scotland merited rather better than the 14-point deficit they faced at half-time. Despite the scoreline, it was an evening of Blue bravura; rarely of Tartan trepidation. Yet, having yielded two gift tries to Ben Cohen and Iain Balshaw – the latter controversially – both received in a near-silence which was anything but reverential, there was simply no scope for Matt Williams’ side to reprieve themselves.Williams, late of New South Wales and Leinster, a man whose tight features – he reminds you of a character from the Aussie soap, Neighbours – conceal a tough interior, asked for the Murrayfield crowd to voice their approval for England’s feat last autumn rather than simply berate the opposition. You’d barely get that on a walkover in a horserace.Scotland’s abysmal World Cup, with perhaps the honourable exception of the quarter-final defeat by Australia, has been followed by a period of reformation and they were scarcely expected to seriously question England who won the damn thing without consistently attaining scintillating standards. And though, ultimately, England claimed the victory which the smug so-and-so’s from south of the border here had anticipated, certainly in the first period they were a combination of devilishly inspired attack and surprising error, which gave the lie to any suggestion that they were unaffected by the occasion. The widely held expectation was that, for the Scots, the result would be like a form of Chinese water torture Hearing only the drip, drip, drip of points After all, England were a derisory 250-1 on.
Nothing had been left to providence by Sir Clive Woodward who had apparently even summoned up some mystical forces of the Orient by adopting his own form of Feng Shui – insisting on putting his boys up bang in the centre of the city rather than at a country golf club retreat. That eulogy to Scottish heroics in the face of the English invader during a historic battle, is, we are told, to be allowed to wither on the stem. It will be replaced by the altogether more acceptable, in these “correct” times, “Highland Cathedral”, once someone can write some words for it.
These days, of course, any flowers discovered, at least where Scottish sport is concerned, are more likely to be placed at the scene of an accident. And after sound defeats at Cardiff last Saturday, and again last Wednesday (by the 11-man code men), this was anticipated as being a third mishap waiting to happen. If an emotionally charged atmosphere won games, Scotland would have eclipsed England by a half-century of points It was an impressive show. Before the start, three pipers were dramatically stationed on the roof of the stands, another 300 on the pitch below, huge flames licking the darkening skies of Edinburgh, and, of course, a passionate rendition of “Flower of Scotland”.
If they heap too much pressure on the back three, Wales could find themselves isolated behind the gain line with half of Ireland on top of them. Gareth Thomas is fine under the high ball, so I would hazard a guess that the garryowen will be a treat the Irish reserve for Shane Williams and Rhys Williams on the wings. You cannot play the Welsh way if you are on the back foot, which returns us to the forwards. Hansen has changed a winning team, and if he is picking horses for courses, I’d back him all the way. Duncan Jones must be upset at being dropped from the front row, but I would think the recall of Iestyn Thomas along with Robin McBryde is to secure the scrum. Ireland will be a lot more physical than Scotland.Colin Charvis is out injured, and that will be a blow to Wales, with Ireland fancying themselves in the loose. Robert Sidoli and Paul O’Connell are two of the best young locks around, and theirs is just one of many interesting head-to-heads.

What we have managed to create is an unusual balance between relevant work experience and personal care and attention.”For many youngsters, the more academic parts of the National Curriculum are irrelevant, say experts. “Every one of the lads who has passed through Revitalise has found the vocational element of the course useful,” said project leader Trevor Blackman. “Who, on the face of it, is going to give work to kids with a history like that?” asked Michael Grier of Tate & Lyle, one of the biggest employers in the London borough of Newham. “Yet if you look a little deeper, you can see there are a range of behavioural, social and family factors contributing to the problem. As a local business, we want a thriving community around us and we feel we can contribute something towards achieving that.”Tate & Lyle lent its in-house photographer to the project in the start- up phase and, in a less direct way, its mentoring and literacy projects, mock interview training, help with filling in application forms, visits to its Beckton filtration plant and book donations to Newham schools are having a beneficial, long-term effect on educational standards in the borough.Mowlem, meanwhile, provided an instructor at its national training centre in Beckton to teach the boys bricklaying.
“The work I did at Revitalise was more relevant than a lot of the National Curriculum. It has helped me prepare for getting a job.”The parts played by Tate & Lyle, Mowlem the builders and the Docklands motorcycle project have been vital to the project’s success. Meanwhile, a liaison officer between school and programme helped to re-integrate Marc into full-time education and provided an essential sense of continuity.”I am doing better in class and enjoy the work,” said Marc, now back at school full-time. The project has multi-agency backing from local groups such as Newham Education Business Partnership and the London East Training and Enterprise Council. For a few hours each weekday, Marc learnt the rudiments of bricklaying, music and information technology, motorcycle maintenance and arts and crafts. More than 100,000 are temporarily excluded.
But, paradoxically, Marc was thrown a lifeline because of his exclusion.
While attending school on a part-time basis, he joined the Revitalise project, in which disaffected pupils – all but one of the 54 is male- get vocational training under the auspices of Newham’s youth and community service. It’s a story all too common in today’s inner- city comprehensives as police, educationalists, youth workers, employers and the Government’s social exclusion unit know only too well. The number of pupils permanently excluded from school for disruptive behaviour and repeated truancy has been rising steadily. Nationally there were 13,500 in 1996-97, up from 11,100 in 1994-95. Some 40 per cent of robberies are committed by 12- to 16-year-olds and 5 per cent are committed by children in school time.
Analysts have upped forecasts for the current year from pounds 49m to pounds 50m, rising to pounds 60m in the year to May 1999, putting the shares on a prospective p/e ratio of 10, then just 8. The shares look a buy, but as with any house-builder, investors should watch closely for any signs of a cyclical downturn.. Gibbs Mew, the West Country-based pub operator, which would have celebrated its centenary this year, has been swallowed by Enterprise Inns, its acquisitive rival. Even now it has not finished restructuring the business and first-half completions fell 5 per cent to 1,752.There are also growing fears that builders are at risk from rising labour costs. And Bryant would be more exposed than most if the Government introduces taxes on greenfield sites. However, there are several reasons why Bryant looks a better bet than most in the sector.
Its costs rose 5 per cent last year but are now moderating, as are land prices. And after gearing up its land bank, the group is still on target to sell 4,000 houses by the end of the current year and 4,500 next.Bryant’s shares jumped 9p to 122p on the buoyant results. All Lord Wolfson needs to do is to take the Argos brand and feed it through his own systems – no need for the expensive duplication of warehousing, call centres and distribution that Argos is intent on building. Even Argos is hard pressed to disagree with the business logic of what’s proposed. The difficulty comes on price. GUS’s 570p a share is 16.5 times forecast earnings for this year.
There are eight British retailers trading on higher multiples than this, so even accepting that Argos is in something of a bind, that’s not much of a bid premium. All the same, the stock market may have overreacted by driving up the price to 630p. In the absence of a rival bid from, say, Kingfisher or one of the big Continental mail order companies, it seems unlikely GUS would be prepared to go so high or that Argos could justify such a valuation on its own. Lord Wolfson doesn’t need to buy Argos, and he’s stubborn enough to walk away from it.. One irony for regulators in dealing with the proposed merger of Glaxo Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham is that they’ve been here once before.
Beecham made a hostile takeover bid for Glaxo in the early 1970s when both companies were minnows compared to what they are today. That deal was referred to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission, which eventually ruled it to be against the public interest on the grounds that having two research and development facilities was better for jobs and scientific advancement than just one. Supporters of the present wave of merger mania argue that the world has greatly changed since then. For a start, both companies are now global in their reach and organisation, as is the market for pharmaceuticals. Furthermore, the cost of new drug discovery and development is now so vast that only the biggest can hope to do it successfully across of range of different products. In other words, the case for the defence goes, this merger would be positively good for Britain, even though it will mean job losses among scientists and one R&D facility instead of two, because it would create a national champion in a pretty much unassailable position compared to competitors in terms of drug discovery.
Arguments like this are much better accepted by regulators, both in London and Brussels, than they were.
Even so, policy-makers should be careful not to become too beholden to the process of globalisation. Before the merger of Glaxo and Wellcome, Britain had no less than four pharmaceutical companies up there among the world leaders. After this latest merger, we will be down to just one behemoth, an also-ran in the shape of Zeneca (which Sir Richard Sykes would also acquire, given the chance), and a smattering of biotechs. The effect of this will be to concentrate a very large proportion of Britain’s private sector R&D expenditure in the hands of just one company. Regardless of the supposed need for scale in successful modern-day pharmaceuticals research, this cannot be an entirely healthy development. To believe otherwise requires the usual rules of innovation to be suspended, for the greatest chance of new product development normally lies in diversity and competition, not hegemony.Who knows, perhaps pharmaceuticals are different, but don’t count on it. Pressure for consolidation, not just in pharmaceuticals but in other industries too, comes primarily from investors keen to see margins protected and enhanced in an ever more competitive world. Any management that resists this pressure or falls behind in the race to consolidate, will rapidly find itself out the door.Plainly the process of consolidation is in the interests of shareholders, for it enables management to counter the persistent downward pressure on prices with growing scale and market clout Whether it is in the public interest is another matter.
