It has its place in the general scheme of things – it shouldn’t scream ‘Look at me.’”"People like the idea of commissioning a new carpet,” says Adam Munthe, founder of the Asad Company. “It is no longer a case of, ‘Oh, we must find a carpet as background for this sofa.’ The exciting decorative qualities that a carpet offers in its own right are again being recognised.” (He observes that several of Asad’s commissions have ended up hanging on the wall.) “And commissioning a carpet is relatively inexpensive compared with buying an antique carpet Furthermore, it will last for 100 years. The longevity of an antique carpet is always questionable.”About a third of the carpets created by Asad are made-to-measure large carpets. A third are oriental designs in smaller sizes, and the rest are contemporary designs, many of which are “flatweaves” (carpets without a tuft) designed by Adam’s wife and co-director of the company, Nelly. Her designs appear simple, but on close examination they reveal beautiful gradations of colour “The appeal of flatweaves is their versatility,” she says.
“They are eminently suitable for any type of interior – traditional or contemporary.”Veedon Fleece, a company which specialises in modern rugs, brings out its own collection each year. The designs are diverse, ranging from a reproduction of an Arts and Crafts rug by C F A Voysey to a modern chessboard pattern. “There is a new generation of people buying contemporary carpets,” says the founder, Adam Gilchrist, who attributes this partly to people’s tendency to move house more frequently these days (unfitted carpets are easier to transport than fitted). About half of Gilchrist’s clients are aged between 30 and 45. The rest are slightly older, and are often seeking to replace worn-out antique carpets with replicas. All of Veedon Fleece’s carpets are hand-knotted in Nepal, using wool from Tibetan mountain sheep.
They can be woven up to very large sizes (24m by 8m).Helen Yardley – another pioneer in the world of contemporary carpets, and best known for her abstract creations – has noticed a change in the public’s response to her designs in recent years. “People are much more appreciative, and there is no longer that response of ‘Oh my God, it costs that much.’” The majority of her carpets, which start at pounds 400 a metre, are one-off commissions, although she also brings out a new collection of designs every year. The advantage to commissioning a carpet, she says, is that you can be assured of its uniqueness. “I particularly enjoy working with architects and being pushed in new directions.
It is important for developing my work.” Yardley cites such diverse influences as Henri Matisse, Robert Motherwell and Roger Hilton. One recent commission was a large carpet for the new Four Seasons Hotel in London. But Yardley says, “My clients are of all ages, and from all sorts of social backgrounds.”The carpet designer Sandy Jones says: “Modern carpets drag people who are stuck in the country-house aesthetic into the 20th century by enabling them to be eclectic.” A modern carpet, in fact, can sit perfectly with the country-pile look. Imagine the drawing room of a stately home, its Rembrandts complemented by a contemporary rug spread over a huge expanse of floor. In 1990, after a long career working with textiles, first in the fashion industry and then as a costume designer, Jones set up her own studio designing carpets and textiles. Although many of her carpets are in only two colours, her love of “abrash” (the subtle change in shade caused by variations in the dye) gives them a gorgeous intensity.Contemporary oriental carpets made in the traditional way, and using natural dyes, but using modernist designs, are also popular. Some of the most effective of these will be on display at the forthcoming “Natural Born Colours” exhibition of carpets and kilims (see end for details).David Black is the expert on the use of natural dyes in carpets, and has clients all over the world. In the Seventies, he was influential in promoting the merits of antique tribal and village rugs (highly sought- after once more), bringing several exhibitions to London.
Cast comes together for a reunion on “GMA” as series DVD is released.
As in that film, Ring begins with an intrepid and suitably rationalist young woman setting out to investigate an urban myth: schoolchildren are gossiping about a weird video which carries a curse: you watch it, then the phone rings and a woman’s voice tells you that you will be dead in a week. Bah, hogwash, says our heroine, watches the damned thing anyway and then has just seven days to save herself from being dragged screaming off to hell.Perfectly acceptable stuff, as is the plot-twist with which it ends: skip your eyes over the upcoming brackets if you haven’t already heard what it is. (Suffice to say, MR James came up with it a long time back in his story “Casting the Runes”.) One of the things that make Ring stand out from the herd, though, is the haunting and extravagant video imagery that Nakata sprinkles over the otherwise fairly bland surface of his film – cryptic shots of mangled text, blighted landscapes and a female demon called Sadako who is the ghost in the video machine.I was a little surprised at quite how enjoyable Ring was, since I’d made the mistake of seeing Ring 0 first. For those who haven’t been briefed about the mythology, Ring 0 (directed by another hand: Norio Tsuruta) doesn’t make a lick of sense, and for those who have been briefed it’s still a sorry, rambling mess, not helped one tiny bit by being set mainly in a theatre.
“It’s Carrie meets All About Eve,” I heard a witty colleague snarl in the darkness; leaving me, like Oscar, wishing that I’d said that.’The Ring’ is showing at the ICA for five weeks from today. “I’m an easy lay.” Morgan Freeman swivels in his seat and gives us the wink. He’s on stage at the NFT, and the audience is lapping up his witty, flirtatious repartee; they’ve paid for a good time with one of Hollywood’s leading actors and there’s no way he’s about to short change them.
“Give me an audience and I’m going to perform – it’s hopelessly wrapped up in my genes.” Freeman smiles generously; it’s the following afternoon and the actor is sipping coffee and munching chocolate biscuits in his Dorchester suite. He’s chosen his clothes carefully – taupe silky shirt, buttoned at the collar (no tie), matching trousers and brown tweed jacket – he’s dignified, but stylish.
If it weren’t for the gold ring in his ear and the twinklein his eyes, I might buy into this conservative exterior.Gravitas is the quality most interviewers ascribe him, and, of course, it’s the one which sticks in his throat. Still, with his deep Southern drawl underpinned by a hint of gravel, and his confident, unhurried air, Freeman effortlessly draws your attention. And he is attentive in return – at times disarmingly so – meeting my questions with a steady, penetrating gaze, rolling my name around his tongue a few times. That he is a great actor is taken as read. Freeman wastes no time with false modesty, aware that he’s part of a select group of older stars who can justly afford pride in their body of work. He tells me that he believes diversity is the key: “One of my idols is Anthony Hopkins,” he says, perhaps surprisingly, “and the other one who comes to mind is Robert DeNiro – he’s a little bit pigeon-holed into the wise-guy thing, but he’s still one of our chameleons, and he also thrives on diversity. But Hopkins, I think, might be the paragon of it – he’s all over the place.”By 63, most of us might imagine seeking a quieter life – a rest, even – but Freeman appears a man on a roll.
He has two movies out in a matter of weeks – Nurse Betty and Under Suspicion – and projects in hand which will see him play a transvestite professional thief, and the political icon of our age, Nelson Mandela “Life is cyclical,” he offers philosophically “You wax and you wane. It’s great.”In Neil LaBute’s Nurse Betty, Freeman plays Charlie, a hit man with a heart, who falls in love with Betty (Renee Zellweger) as he criss-crosses the country on her tail. It’s another terrific performance, Freeman veering from quiet consideration to steely danger in an instant as he guides his volatile protégé, Wesley (Chris Rock), in the art of professional killing. Freeman had seen LaBute’s debut feature, In The Company Of Men, before he read the script for Nurse Betty, and was intrigued by how different it was: “I thought, this is bizarre, this is a departure.” It certainly is – a tale of parallel lives, in which reality and fantasy, soap opera and action-thriller pair up beautifully.

After all, the game is believed to have had its origins in his country – although there is no certainty about it, a Scottish curling stone inscribed with the date 1511 stands as powerful circumstantial evidence. And many of the stones which will be used in Nagano – 40lb a time, including the handles – will have been hewn from Scottish granite. Ailsa Craig has an important part to play in the Winter Olympics.Although the game and the stones may be Scottish, the four Scotsmen selected have to remember that, for the duration of Olympics at least, they are British. They are coming round to it.”We are all very patriotic Scotsmen, and we find it strange to be representing Great Britain for the first time in our lives,” Dryburgh said, “I probably find the position easiest to come to terms with because as a member of the Royal Air Force, my boss is the Queen.”Dryburgh, who was 32 on Friday, comes from a sporting family. His 22- year-old youngest brother, James, is Scotland’s first professional curler who has twice been world junior champion and is a reserve for the Olympic team. Another brother, Stewart, is also a top flight curler, and sister Carolyn, has been five-times Inter-Services skating champion. The sporting genes have been passed down by mother Jacquie, who was runner- up in the pairs at the World Professional Skating Championships, and father Jack, who was Britain’s leading ice hockey scorer for four years during the 1960’s, revelling in the soubriquet of “The Pimpernel”.Dryburgh, who is due to be promoted to Squadron Leader on his return from Nagano, is a training officer who directs the work of flight engineers “I am not an active flyer because of bad eyesight,” he said.
He is, however, clearly perfectly adapted for the acute observation he requires as skip for his team, a role which requires him to call all the shots, as well as delivering the final, crucial shot himself. The sport which has similarities to bowls, in that points are scored by the number of stones you can leave closer to a central point than your opponents’. They are not gung ho – but nor are they travelling all the way to Japan with the hope of anything less than an Olympic title.”We are after the gold medal in Nagano or it is failure for us,” said Dryburgh’s colleague, Peter Wilson, a pharmaceutical salesman whose brother, Philip, a farmer from Stranraer, is also in the team. Ronnie Napier, a construction engineer, makes up the four.Dryburgh himself assesses the situation as follows: Canada favourites, and Scotland among five second favourites, the others being Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and Norway.Curling was featured at the first winter Olympics of 1924 in Chamonix, although its official status then is in doubt. Mike Rowbottom on
an ambitious quartet.
Britain, as the British Olympic Association has been careful to point out in recent weeks, is not a winter sports country. With the XVIII Winter Olympics getting underway in Nagano on Saturday, the official line on British medal possibilities has been deliberately downbeat. Outraged domestic reaction at a lack of success in the summer Games of 1996 is still fresh in many administrative minds.Against that background, the jaunty confidence of the British curling team – four Scotsmen led by Flight Lieutenant Dougie Dryburgh – stands in startling contrast. In December, they regarded the bronze medal they won at the European Championships, where they defeated the previous world champions, Sweden, in the third-place play-off, as a disappointment. The narrowest of defeats in the semi-final by Germany, who went on to win the gold, rankled with the Scottish team, which managed a measure of revenge by beating the Germans at Perth last month. Winning Olympic medals is something that Britain has not been good at lately.
Now four patriotic Scotsmen are threatening to end an infamous run – at the Winter Olympics to boot. It will be no surprise to discover the “JJs” – Jerry and Jason, both educated at state comprehensives, both renowned as players’ players – in a quiet corner of some bar in the Rue de la Madeleine on Saturday night. After all, they have almost as much to look forward to as they have in common.. Indeed, they all played against Australia in the 1991 World Cup final.Guscott and Leonard are the only components of that side still plying their trade at the most rarified level, although Andrew and Underwood remain active in the Allied Dunbar Premiership.
Only seven players have hung in there long enough to gain admission and all of them – Rory Underwood, Will Carling, Rob Andrew, Brian Moore, Peter Winterbottom, Wade Dooley and Jason Leonard – experienced Guscott’s genius at first hand. I’m enjoying my rugby and helping Bath beat Brive has put my confidence levels on a high.”If the atmosphere in Bordeaux was anything to go by, the French are crazy for rugby at the moment It will be spine-tingling over there. To get picked for England now was not something I expected, but I’m chuffed to bits to be involved again.”It now seems certain that Guscott, who wins his 49th England cap in Paris, will realise one of the few tangible ambitions left to him: membership of the exclusive Red Rose 50 Club. My only goal after the operation was to recover some health and fitness and play for Bath. I’m one player in an exciting squad focused on the big games coming up and nothing else has any relevance.
If you add to that the fact that England are playing some pretty expansive stuff at the moment, you could say I’m looking forward to this weekend.”But I must say I find a lot of the attention coming my way a bit on the weird side. “I’m a rugby player and I play because I love the game,” Guscott said this week. “Why would I want to retire now? We’ve got a World Cup to think about next year and while there is a chance of being part of the England squad, I’m focusing on playing on at the best level I can.”All the same, it is difficult to think of another player anywhere in the world who would be thrown into what is certain to be an extreme physical and psychological trial in such unpropitious circumstances. Guscott loves playing in Paris, but a France-England Test is no one’s idea of garden party.”Look, I’ve played two full games since coming back, the first of which I ended up losing, the second of which was the greatest day in my club’s history. Guscott’s last Test appearance, against South Africa in Johannesburg in July, cost him a broken arm and when he subsequently picked up some serious damage to a disc in his lower back during rehabilitative training with Bath last September, the game appeared to be up.Many of his closest club colleagues expected him to call it quits.
“They’ve demonstrated very little flexibility, so we’re afraid that they will be pushed to the edge.”. Even in the height of summer, there can be a kick in the wind across Newmarket Heath. By November, punters decamp from the warmth of their cars and joke wearily about the need for insulation One sweater, two sweaters, sweater and a coat. The season is gone and the racing industry is pleasing itself.
Sixteen races over two days, the last chance for trainers to sneak a run into callow two-year-olds or grab some financial insulation of their own when no one else is looking.Only one title remains unresolved, largely obscured by the dazzle of the lights from the Breeders’ Cup and a season dominated by the rivalry between Ireland and the Middle East. On Friday morning, the gap between Kieren Fallon and Kevin Darley in the race for the jockeys’ championship is 11, wide enough for the oddsmakers to consider the book as good as closed, not quite enough for either contender to feel the same. If Darley is going to mount one last defence of his title, the ground has to be here at headquarters, in Fallon’s backyard.
Not many expected the race to last this deep into the season, but Darley has clung tenaciously to Fallon’s coat-tails, never letting up on a ride or allowing the former champion to push himself on to horses that were not rightfully his. When Darley won the championship for the first time at the age of 39, Fallon, three times the champion, said his title was merely “on loan”.
He had not been best pleased with the suggestion, voiced by Darley’s agent, that Sir Michael Stoute should really have employed Darley not Fallon as his stable jockey. There was never much common ground between them. Darley rode in the North, Fallon in the South, but this season their paths have crossed most days and mutual respect has developed into an unlikely friendship. Sometimes, when Fallon is stripped down and the weighing room is quiet, Darley still looks at the scar which runs from beneath the Irishman’s neck and down – like the contours of the River Shannon, as he once described it – to his elbow and wonders how on earth Fallon ever came back. Fallon himself sometimes wonders too.”I’ve only got admiration for the man, no matter what people say about him,” says Darley “That scar, I’ve never seen anything like it. He was in pain when he came back, you could see it, and then all the criticism he’s had, it’s a credit to him that he’s knuckled down and got on with it.”They were laughing the other evening, the pair of them, over dinner at a Sandown hotel.
The most unusual, however, were the sand baths of Kyushu in southern Japan. An analysis of the delicate balance between the billions of neurons in our skulls, and the need to supply the axons (which connect them like cables) with blood and fatty insulation shows we can only improve our data processing ability by 20 per cent at most. The BT research, published in New Scientist, found that to expand our thinking ability, the 100 billion neurons in the brain would have to be larger, so they could pass signals more quickly. But that would in turn demand a greater blood supply – which, given the constricted size of the brain cavity, could only be achieved by limiting the growth of the neurons.
A larger skull might allow both more neurons and a bigger blood supply, but transmission of data would be slower.. An American-style “zero tolerance” anti crime initiative in Scotland was yesterday hailed a success by police chiefs who said it had helped cut offences in the force region to their lowest level in 15 years. For the past three months Strathclyde Police has been clamping down on minor crimes in the belief that this will reduce the number of more serious offences and reduce public fear.
During the first stage of the “Spotlight” initiative more than 200,000 extra police hours were spent on the streets.
During the offensive, 12 offences were spotlighted. Since the start of the scheme crimes of violence, indecency, dishonesty, car theft, and vandalism were down but crime covering drugs, obstructing police and overall nuisance rose.. Scientists have taken a giant leap for gastronomy by growing the highly prized golden chantrelle wild mushroom in a greenhouse. Until now, the fungus has defied all attempts at cultivation and can only be harvested from pine forests. Large quantities are imported from the United States because it is a variety in decline throughout Europe. The team, led by Eric Danell from the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Uppsala, reported in the science journal Nature that they had transferred pine seedlings carrying the fungus into pots in March, 1995.
Five fruit-bodies emerged during the following spring and autumn.
The scientists believe their technique could be applied to other endangered species, such as Tricholoma matsutake, which is the most valuable mushroom in the world, costing about pounds 60 each.. Naomi Smith, the schoolgirl found murdered in a children’s park, had a crucial “DNA autograph” on her mutilated body, a jury heard yesterday. Tests showed that saliva found in a bite on 15-year-old Naomi’s body fitted the DNA profile of Edwin Hopkins, 20, Birmingham Crown Court was told. Mr Hopkins had an “incredibly rare” DNA profile found only in one in every 250 million people, said Colman Treacy QC, for the prosecution.
His teeth were also a perfect match for the bite mark – and his sister, Julie, gave police vital evidence about his whereabouts on the night of Naomi’s death, said Mr Treacy as he outlined the prosecution case to the jury of six men and six women. Mr Hopkins, of Ansley Common, near Nuneaton, Warwickshire, denies murder. Naomi vanished after popping out to post a letter in her home village of Ansley Common in September 1995. Her throat had been cut and she had been sexually assaulted.
“It was probably better than if the killer had left his autograph,” Mr Treacy said. “Because what was found in the area around the breast provides some of the most valuable evidence for the prosecution in this case.” The trial continues..
The Conservative Party’s poster campaign featuring the “demon eyes” has beaten Wonderbra to win the latest “most talked about advert” accolade, a survey revealed yesterday. The pre-election campaign, devised by the M&C Saatchi agency, gained more national press coverage than any other promotion in the last three years. The advertisements, which included pictures of the Labour leader Tony Blair with superimposed red eyes, have topped the poll. Wonderbra was second and Labour’s “Same Old Tory Lies” campaign came sixth.
Martin Loat, managing director of Propeller Marketing Communications, which conducted the survey, said: “Like it or loathe it, the Demon Eyes icon was a stunning advertising image that captured the public imagination.”. DNA tests can also be used as a means of proving identity – as Peter Price’s case shows – as long as the owner has taken a blood sample. Some even know where their parrots have been taken – exotic breeds can be so rare that word soon flies around. But proving ownership can be difficult: thieves are adept at cutting off distinguishing features such as tattooed claws.Microchips, the size of a grain of rice, inserted into the muscular area of the bird are the most reliable way of identifying a stolen parrot. Or they visit an aviary with a video camera, filming the most exotic birds, producing a video of their own “private collection” and distribute it to potential buyers Some owners know who the thieves are. The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, decided to put the bird down. The thieves usually steal to demand – especially when it comes to parrots worth pounds 7,000 or more. A dislocated leg had been set at a 75-degree angle, the bird was emaciated and there were wounds on its chest. When she got home, she found that its legs were broken and its claws oozing pus.
These parrots are put into cardboard boxes, often so small that the parrot cannot stretch his wings. Or else they are not fed properly.”Last month, a half-dead African grey parrot (usually worth pounds 600 plus) surfaced at an auction and was sold for pounds 72 to a woman who couldn’t get close enough to the bird to inspect it. According to Graham Wellstead, administrator at the National Council for Aviculture, private breeders are most at risk. “I can think of three parrot collections worth around pounds 10,000 which have been stolen this year,” he says “Most would have been sold in the car parks at auctions Or they are advertised in the free newspapers. According to the theft register, Battersea Park’s Children’s Zoo in South London had a pair of keas (worth pounds 4,000) stolen in January; Child Beale Wildlife Park, near Reading, lost two pairs of parrots worth pounds 7,000 in the same month; West Hill Farm in Yorkshire had 10 parrots stolen in February, and the MJS garden centre in Twyford, Berkshire, had two separate batches taken in April. Most bird parks have now installed elaborate security systems.

I mean, we still have a disconnect because of the attitude that men have about being uncomfortable about being the objects of women’s fantasies and gaze.” That would explain why men would be less likely than women to dream about one day appearing in the pages of Playgirl (and why there aren’t any Boys Gone Wild). But it doesn’t explain why women would be buying the magazine, the rabbit-head merchandise, the shtick. “To say that the gap is closing isn’t to say that the gap has closed,” she replied. “A lot of women read the magazine,” Christie Hefner told me when I went to visit her in Chicago.
“We know they read it because we get letters from them.” And this was proof, she said, that “the post-sexual-revolution, post-women’s-movement generation that is now out there in their late twenties and early thirties has just a more grown-up, comfortable, natural attitude about sex and sexiness that is more in line with where guys (omega) were a couple generations before. The rabbit head symbolises sexy fun, a little bit of rebelliousness, the same way a navel ring does… or low-rider jeans! It’s an obvious ‘I’m taking control of how I look and the statement I’m making’ as opposed to ‘I’m embarrassed about it’ or ‘I’m uncomfortable with it’ A little bit of that in-your-face.. but in a fun way… frisky is a good word.” I asked her why she supposed all these frisky, in-your-face women were buying Playboy instead of, say, Playgirl. Playboy’s image has everything to do with its pyjama-clad, septuagenarian, babe-magnet founder, Hugh Hefner, and the surreal world of celebrities, multiple “girlfriends” and nonstop bikini parties he’s set up around himself But in actuality, Playboy is a company largely run by women. Because of the feminist movement, women today – on both sides of the Atlantic – obviously have staggeringly different opportunities and expectations than our mothers did: we have attained a degree of hard-won (and still threatened) freedom in our personal lives; we are gradually penetrating the highest levels of the work force; we get to go to college and play sports and run for government office. But to look around, you’d think all any of us want to do is rip off our clothes and shake it It no longer makes sense to just blame men. Mia Leist and plenty of other women are behind the scenes, not just in front of the cameras, making decisions, making money and shouting “We want boobs.” Playboy is a case in point.

His last public appearance – though not in a playing capacity – was as recently as 23 December 1998 when he attended the annual general meeting of the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association.Norman Dagley, billiards player: born 1930; English Amateur billiards champion 1965-1984; World Amateur champion 1971 and 1975; World Matchplay Champion 1987; UK Champion 1987; European Champion 1987; World Professional Billiards Champion 1987 and 1988; British Open Champion 1991; married; died 15 January 1999.. His run to the final included a 4-0 triumph over Mike Russell – soon to become the youngest ever winner of a professional billiards event. Naturally, he finished No 1 in the rankings but never quite dominated the game to such an extent again. In 1988, the world championship attracted a record 24 entries and Dagley retained his trophy with a 7-4 success over another Australian, Eddie Charlton. The world championship, first won in 1870 by William Cook and later held by the likes of Joe Davis, Walter Lindrum and Tom Newman, went to Dagley in 1987.His 3-1 win came at the expense of the defending champion Robby Foldvari from Australia. The first prize of pounds 9,500 was the largest ever offered in billiards and helped Dagley end the campaign with nearly pounds 20,000 from a total prize fund of almost pounds 50,000 .In addition to the world crown, Dagley captured the UK and European Championships defeating Ray Edmonds and Foldvari respectively. Even at this advanced stage in his career Dagley was able to tread in the footsteps of some of the most illustrious names in cue sports history by becoming world champion twice over.
It followed on from his world amateur championship victories in 1971 and 1975 plus a record 15 English amateur titles between 1965 and 1984, including seven times in a row (1978-84).
Dagley joined the paid ranks in readiness for the 1986-87 season and made an immediate impact. IT IS often said that life begins at 40. However, in the case of Norman Dagley that wasn’t strictly accurate. The Leicestershire-born billiards exponent, a former storeman and manager of a snooker club in Earl Shilton, only began to get major recognition when he turned professional at the age of 54. “What I’m really proud of,” Bailey once said, “is that a bus conductor refused my fare the other day. I don’t think I could bear to be any more famous than that.”Robin Bailey, actor: born Hucknall, Nottinghamshire 5 October 1919; married Patricia Weekes (deceased; three sons); died London 14 January 1999..
He disliked being pointed at or stared at in the street, but did not mind recognition. Keith Waterhouse updated the duo for television.Robin Bailey’s other notable television roles included Sir Leicester Dedlock in Bleak House (1985), Judge Gerald Graves in Rumpole of the Bailey (1988, 1991, 1992) and Uncle Alfred in Dance to the Music of Time (1997). The character had retired after spending his entire working life with the family firm, Potter’s Mints, but insisted on minding everyone else’s business. “Potter sees himself as the voice of the beleaguered minority and he speaks up for people,” said Bailey. “But most notable is his self-importance.” The actor added loud check clothing and a bow- tie to Potter’s wardrobe, as well as sporting a small moustache that suggested a mini-Hitler streak.Further comedy success came with the role of Charters, one of the two lovable eccentrics, in the whodunit serial Charters and Caldicot (1985), with Michael Aldridge playing the other amateur sleuth. The characters, played by Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne, had originally appeared in Frank Launder and Sidney Gilliat’s 1938 Hitchcock film The Lady Vanishes and the sequels Night Train to Munich and Crooks’ Tour (both 1940).
Irony is my normal state of mind.”He first made his mark in situation comedy by playing the seedy Uncle Mort in four series of I Didn’t Know You Cared (1975-79), Peter Tinniswood’s tale of war between the sexes in a Northern household in a funereal atmosphere that Uncle Mort seemed to relish. In 1983, Bailey took over the role of Redvers Potter in the situation comedy Potter, which Arthur Lowe had played for two series before his death. “I have to admit that I really prefer comedy,” he said, “because it’s where I can most easily share the attitude of the writer. American television recognised Bailey’s quintessential Englishness by casting him as Neville Chamberlain in The Gathering Storm (1974) and Mr Hale in Mrs Gaskell’s North and South (1975). Guest appearances in the British period dramas Upstairs Downstairs and The Pallisers bolstered Bailey’s reputation for playing upper-crust roles. But the actor was in his element in television comedy. Bailey also took over from compere Jerry Esmonde for a while to present the Fifties quiz show The 64,000 Question.Notable acting roles that followed included Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, in the series Kenilworth (1957) and Sir Charles Weyburn in The Edwardians’ story “Olive Latimer’s Husband” (1965). His first appearances were in Gentle Gunman, Jonah (both 1950) and Markheim (1952), Tony Richardson’s production of Robert Louis Stevenson’s eerie short story set in a curio shop.He gained more attention as Sir Bertram in an episode of the early ITV series The Adventures of Robin Hood (1955), starring Richard Greene as the outlaw and featuring scripts by Hollywood writers blacklisted during the McCarthy era.
He also took the role of Colonel Pickering in Pygmalion at the Olivier Theatre (1992).Bailey’s earliest film roles were military ones. He made his debut as a billeting officer in School for Secrets (1946), directed by Peter Ustinov, and followed it with parts in pictures such as Private Angelo (1949), Glory at Sea (1952) and Sailor of the King (1953). He went on to appear as the assistant manager of the road haulage firm featured in the gritty drama Hell Drivers (1957), the MI5 Commander in Galton and Simpson’s farce The Spy with a Cold Nose (1966), a psychiatrist in Bryan Forbes’s melodrama The Whisperers (1966) and Colonel Eustace in the swashbuckler The Four Feathers (1978).But television proved to be the best showcase for Bailey’s acting skills. In more than 20 West End productions, his parts included Faulkland in The Rivals (St James’s Theatre, 1948, winning him the Clarence Derwent Award), Professor Henry Higgins in Pygmalion (Embassy Theatre, 1951), Lord Basingstoke in No Sign of the Dove (Savoy Theatre, 1953), both Theseus and Oberon in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Saville Theatre, 1967) and King Pellinore in Camelot (Apollo Theatre, 1982).He played Henry Higgins again in My Fair Lady in Melbourne (1959) and Sydney (1960), and appeared on Broadway as both Christopher Lawrence Cromwell in Jennie (Majestic Theatre, 1963) and Martin Lynch-Gibbon in A Severed Head (Royale Theatre, 1964), a role he previously performed at the Criterion Theatre, London, in the same year. With the National Theatre Company at the Olivier Theatre, he played Sir Jasper Fidget in The Country Wife (1977), Firs in The Cherry Orchard (1978) and Banquo in Macbeth (1978). Repertory experience followed in Newcastle upon Tyne, before the war intervened and Bailey served in the Army (1940-44). However, he returned to the stage at the Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham, during the last year of the war and further repertory work followed.Shakespearean roles on an English Arts Theatre tour of Europe (1946-47) provided him with a grounding in the classics, before he made his West End debut as Ludovico in Othello at the Piccadilly Theatre in 1947.

David Platt’s reign as head coach of the England Under-21 team or teams, as he used 22 players got off to an impressive start here last night, his eager young beavers supplying a performance to match the result, which became an emphatic one with two goals in the last three minutes. If there was inevitably a slightly fragmented look to a match of 19 substitutions, there were also strong individual showings from Jermaine Defoe, Darius Vassell, Jonathan Greening, Luke Chadwick and John Terry, among others, and some encouraging team-work too. Vassell put the home side ahead early on and Defoe, West Ham’s rare prospect, was involved in the other three goals, the first of them within seconds of replacing the Villa striker soon after the interval. “There are some quality players there, and some intelligence too,” said Platt. “To break into the senior squad is very, very hard but it wouldn’t surprise me if one or two do step up.”Before the game, Terry, the Chelsea defender, was named captain despite having been sent off in the final minute of the 3-1 defeat by Greece in June, which proved to be Howard Wilkinson’s rather out of tune swan-song.
Luke Young, playing at right-back as Platt sensibly employed Eriksson’s favoured 4-4-2 system, was also dismissed in that game, and the disciplinary record might well have worsened last night had the referee seen Francis Jeffers swing a punch at Theo Janssen midway through the first half.Jeffers, Arsenal’s most expensive summer recruit, had an otherwise quiet time, unlike his striking partner Vassell, who had clearly benefited from Villa’s summer Intertoto Cup campaign. In only the fifth minute he collected the ball 25 yards out, turned cleverly past his marker and sent a fierce drive into the top corner of the net.Greening then had a goal disallowed for fouling the goalkeeper, Dorus de Vries, who fell awkwardly and had to be taken off. Having lost Blackburn’s David Dunn to an injury, England made a further five substitutions at half-time, but it was their seventh new man who created the greatest impression. Defoe came on for Vassell, who had been heavily fouled, and from the resulting free-kick, taken by Greening, the little striker poached a goal, just as he had done on his debut against Mexico. The Dutch improved briefly, Arjen Robben’s lob landing on the crossbar. But England finished much the stronger; in the last few minutes Defoe sent Malcolm Christie round the goalkeeper for a third goal and finished a well-crafted passing move himself to complete a good first night for Platt. Tiger Woods yesterday was neither chased by a bear nor attacked by an autograph hunter, but instead fell foul of the longest par-four hole in the history of the USPGA Championship in practice at the Atlanta Athletic Club.
The 18th hole on the Highland Course has been stretched to 490 yards, normally the length of a par-five.
Woods hit a driver off the tee and though he was able to carry the pond in front of the green with a three-iron, he twice put approach shots into the water on the right.Woods, winner for the last two years, praised the venue for the 83rd USPGA as a “straightforward course with no tricks where you can be aggressive with the driver.” But the world No 1 criticised the changes that are currently being made at Augusta National, home of the Masters. All but three of the par-fours have been altered with 300 yards added to the length of the course. In particular, the 18th hole, which plays steeply up hill, has been extended by 60 yards. “Every year there is always something a little different at Augusta as they have adapted to the modern technology,” said the double Masters champion “But I don’t agree with making holes 60 yards longer. The [par-five] 13th was a great risk-reward hole where you could make three or seven based on whether you can draw the ball.”Now a lot of guys will have to lay up and there will be a lot less threes and sevens but more fours and fives. “After recent thunderstorms here in Georgia, the course is soft and playing even longer than the yardage of 7,213 suggests.
Even Vijay Singh needed a three-wood for his second at the 18th. “They’ve set this course up perfectly for Tiger,” said Retief Goosen, the US Open champion. “They think they are making it difficult for Tiger, but it isn’t.”He’s smiling He knows he has a big advantage over everybody. All the trouble is out there about 280 yards and he flies it about 310.” Goosen will play alongside Woods and Open champion David Duval tomorrow and Friday in the traditional grouping of the season’s major winners.Woods was hit in the mouth by an autograph hunter’s book on Monday “It was just an excited fan, a little kid.” Woods said. “I’m still here.” He said the same about a bear that prowled near where Tiger and Mark O’Meara were fishing on a recent rip to Alaska. Woods has not played since finishing 25th in the Open and has not practised much either, preferring to relax before an intense seven weeks up to the Ryder Cup at The Belfry next month.
“Perhaps he was right about this work, and we are wrong!”Pressing the Beethoven button elicits a longer speech: about why the composer first declined the invitation to compose one single variation on a crummy theme, why he then found himself writing dozens, and why he hit a block with the final few. Pollini stresses that the composer described this amazing work as “transformations” rather than variations; his description of the way Beethoven transcended his self-imposed constraints – staying in the banal C major – is a dense little lecture. It is, he says, “one of the greatest works of piano literature, one of the most difficult to understand, and to make understood. It’s something you have to live with, a slow process.”One of the most striking things about Pollini’s recording is the way the architecture shines through, but for this he disclaims responsibility. “My attention is almost entirely focused on the expressive character of each piece, not on the global whole. When I learn a new piece, I try to work as quickly as possible at first; I have to know how it sounds, before I can begin to work on what it means.”This monastic seriousness typifies everything he does.
His recently released record of the Chopin Ballades may initially seem to short-change the poetry of these works, but each is a marvellously wrought, and intensely dramatic, whole. “No other composer has ever attained Chopin’s sound-world,” he says. He violently disagrees with the purists who religiously play him on an 1830 Pleyel. “It’s a mistake to think that composers were always in harmony with the possibilities of the instruments at their disposal. Just as Beethoven’s imagination went far beyond the possibilities of the pianos – and the orchestral instruments – he had, so did Chopin’s.
He wrote for a better piano than existed then – or that even exists now.” As far as pianos are concerned, Pollini does not believe we’ve reached the end of history. “There is no reason why the piano should not go on evolving.”The self-effacing Pollini has always been a bit of a mystery, ever since his abrupt withdrawal from public life after winning the Warsaw Chopin Competition at 18. The pressure had been too much, and he needed time to build a different sort of career, slowly and deliberately following his own instincts. This meant studying with that fastidious perfectionist (and notorious for cancelling concerts) Arturo Benedetto Michelangeli, and joining Claudio Abbado in taking music into Italian factories. He now divides his time equally between the music of the past, the present, and the hypothetical future.Over at New York’s Carnegie Hall, he’s currently supervising a two-year series of 20 concerts in which the world’s top maestros and virtuosi are covering two millennia of composition. Concerts of ancient Greek monody are planned, and a Monteverdi bash in which Pollini will play the harpsichord. The job of the audience, he declares, is “to absorb, to make their own, the music that reflects the world around them. Our task is to pay homage to the major composers of our day, and to encourage future ones.” He’s not sure his eclectic mix – from Gesualdo to Nono – would go down so well in London, where audiences like to compartmentalise things, with the “early” and “contemporary” camps keeping themselves to themselves.Flu prevented him from performing one of the most rebarbative works in the contemporary canon earlier this year: Stockhausen’s Klavierstück X, with its pedalled chords that hang like parallel wires in the sky, and fistfuls of note-clusters that explode among fields of savage glissandi, and for which Pollini wears gloves to protect his hands from laceration.
“With Boulez, Stockhausen is one of the two great masters of the late 20th century,” insists this unrepentant modernist. He doesn’t object in principle to “new tonalists” like John Adams: he just doesn’t rate what they do. Moreover, he’s planning to record Klavierstück X for his label Deutsche Grammophon, “if I am still with them at that time”.If. His contract stipulates that none of his slower-selling records be dropped from the catalogue, but he’s mistrustful of what the cash-strapped classical labels, with their desperate merging and down-sizing, may do next. “Contemporary repertoire is just a side-issue in their catalogue,” he says. “If their current attitudes continue, chamber music will be at risk also, because it’s not as popular as sonatas and symphonies. Soon all we may be left with are a few overworked symphonies.”When I mention a proclamation made by the boss of Sony that “core repertoire” recordings are dead, and that crossover stunts are where it’s at, we get as close to an explosion as Pollini’s reserved manner will allow “Awful We must protest.

He is considered a three-star recruit by both Rivals and Scout . Mark Buehrle would be my second choice, over both Ryan Dempster and Rich Harden.Perhaps I have a White Sox-bias in my decision, as both Dempster and Harden have been unquestionably better then Buehrle this season, but he’s always been a big-game pitcher, and I have the utmost confidence that he’d get it done in the clutch, where Dempster and Harden both have yet to prove that.JJ: I would agree, simply because Zambrano, Dempster, and Harden are all far more consistent than the quartet of Danks/Vazquez/Floyd/Buehrle. Ron Artest will be a difference maker and Yao is back after the injury.
