If the feisty chop of the English original, “slum it and clear it …” was softened and sensualised by translation into Italian, it still maintained a balance between linguistic bravado and commonplace exposition, if not exactly providing a plot that created a convincing portrait.For Magma is essentially an intimate psychodrama of a single female alone with a chorus of ghosts from fantasy or memory, not unlike the film Repulsion. Magma is utterly modern, even Modernist, in its rigour and uses a full battery of techno-electronic sound, a veritable tagliatelle of wiring, yet remains radically engaging.Coccioli is perfectly placed for such a breakthrough with this first major work, as the right-hind man of Luciano Berio, whose own emphasis is on the manipulation and celebration of the human voice.To see Berio in attendance at opening night, reverently addressed as “Maestro” by every usher, was to understand the pleasures of continuity in Italian musical life, as well as the burdens of that history. Magma refreshingly avoids any hint of populist Po-Mo Romanticism, twinned evils of quotation and pastiche, whilst proffering the traditional lure of melody unabashed. Opera: Magma

No country in the world is more intimately associated with opera than Italy, which makes the life of any contemporary Italian work bearing this title all the more complex, indeed fraught.Magma, or The See-Through Wilderness, a new opera by the young composer Lamberto Coccioli, could not, obviously, be further from Verdi, but it presents a music of such lambent sensuality and richly dramatic colour that it cannot but convince even those weaned on an exclusive diet of bel canto. Rattle’s inquisitiveness should appeal to the child in us all.. Soprano Amanda Roocroft attends our pleasure “on the other side”, but she, I fear, is not the most persuasive advocate of the song-finale Das himmlische leben (“Heavenly Life”). It’s not so much that the voice lacks purity (though it does), but more than the attitude it conveys is all wrong Way too proper; unsmiling St Ursula may have laughed; Roocroft does not Still, this is a fascinating, often revelatory, performance.
Again, Rattle reminds us that childhood fears are no less real for being the stuff of fairy tales. And when, finally, the slow movement (floating in on a seamless legato of cello sound) delivers us from heartache to ecstasy – the climax a heavenly mirage such as only this composer could have conceived – Mahler, the child, is suddenly Mahler, the man.Which brings me to my one reservation. By Jonathon Burch TALBOZANG, Afghanistan, June 16 (Reuters) – Fifty-year-old Abdul Wadud walked for two hours across Afghanistan’s remote northern mountains to hear a police commander give yet more promises of aid for those who turn their backs on growing opium Wadud does not grow drugs But if no money comes soon, he will. “Thegovernment told us several times they would help us and they didn’t,” he said, crouching barefoot on the ground in traditional Afghan loose shirt and trousers and explaining he feeds a family of 15 on occasional work as a day labourer. “If the government or the aid organisations don’t help us — yes we will have to start growing opium,” he said. “If they build us schools and roads we promise never to grow opium.” Wadud and around 30 other village elders from the area had gathered on a hillside deep inside the Hindu Kush mountains, to attend a “shura”, or meeting, organised by provincial authorities to dissuade the men from growing the drug.
Their Badakhshan province in remote northern Afghanistan has been a showcase for government efforts to battle the drugs trade, which accounts for nearly all the world’s heroin. Until 2006 Badakhshan was one of the main opium growing areas in Afghanistan, producing the country’s second biggest crop. But last year its output fell by 95 percent, to a mere 200 hectares under cultivation, close to being declared ‘poppy free’ by the United Nations, which credited government information campaigns and eradication programmes for the success there. The United Nations has warned, however, that last year’s improvement may not hold without more aid for poor farmers.

IN AN embarrassing setback for the Walt Disney Company, a judge in California has ruled that the media giant was in breach of agreement with its former film boss, Jeffrey Katzenberg, when it withheld his bonus when he left the company in 1994, two years before the end of his contract. The decision, issued in a seven-page written statement by the retired Superior Court judge Paul Breckenridge, does not mark the end of the long- running and often bitter battle between Mr Katzenberg and Disney which has enthralled Hollywood. It has been viewed as the ultimate display of personal animus and greed in the topmost reaches of the entertainment industry Some have dubbed it “Katz vs. Mouse”.
Mr Katzenberg, who deserted the Disney ship to help to form the Dreamworks SKG studio with Steven Spielberg and David Geffen, claims that the company owes him $250m.
