Sir: I read with interest your series of articles on infertility (18 April) and I agree with many of the sentiments expressed in your editorial.
There is considerable debate as to whether infertility is an illness or not. Infertile couples are not “well”, in that part of one or both. of them does not function properly; and they need treatment in order to rectify the problem. The inability to conceive is a “symptom” indicating that there is something medically wrong.Furthermore, infertility fits into the definition of illness used by the World Health Organisation and by the NHS itself.
The points which your editorial made about the suffering undergone by infertile couples are entirely accurate. Infertility places a huge strain on couples, which is often well hidden and underestimated. Clinical depression is a common result of infertility and some relationships do not withstand the strain,The success rate quoted (one in eight couples becoming pregnant) is actually the rate, of live births resulting from a cycle of IVF. A rather higher proportion of women actually become pregnant.
There is clear evidence that these success rates are improving all the time and, in many centres, success rates close to those of nature itself are routinely produced. IVF is increasingly a routine treatment giving infertile couples almost the same chance of producing a baby as fertile couples have.You rightly say that many couples are forced to seek treatment privately and this can put an intolerable financial strain upon them. Many infertile couples make huge financial sacrifices in pursuit of a family. Consequently, we find Labour’s reported approach to policy in this area rather odd.
It is hardly right to decide policy on the basis that because treatment isn’t offered everywhere it shouldn’t be offered anywhere. This would merely increase the inequity of provision already faced by the infertile, rather than reduce it.Equally it makes no sense to suggest that every couple should make a contribution towards infertility treatment as a mark of their commitment to having children. There is no collection box awaiting fertile couples when they decide to have children. For the fertile majority, funding is total at all stages, up to and including a decision to terminate an unwanted pregnancy. Why are infertile couples expected to accept that, for them, having children should be a luxury or only available privately? But in the world of interiors it is not Angel’s size they talk about – it is her eye. Angel’s eye is fabled, legendary; and her shop with the equally legendary name, Tobias and the Angel, is the stuff of stylists’ dreams. It is a mixture of refugees from the past: raffia-embroidered tea cosies, linen sheets, thick rustic pottery, small objects of desire; utilitarian beauty from the present: lilac and red dusters, plain string- coloured cloths and linen scrim, tied with ribbons in bundles so seductive that you have to get a grip on yourself (it is, you have to keep reminding yourself, only a pile of floor cloths); stuff that Angel herself has made: teddy bears dressed in clothes made from scraps of antique fabrics, gilded flowerpots; and strings of objets trouvs: a dried mushroom dyed red, a gold walnut, a starfish, an antique button. `We used to call them just strings,’ explains Angel, `until one day a lady came in and told us they were objets trouvs.’ She and her staff now try to introduce the heavily emphasised expression into conversation as often as they can. `Oh, I’m great trouv-er of objets,’ she declares.
Angel opened 10 years ago with her partner, the Tobias of the shop’s title, from whom she is now “divorced”, while still keeping custody of the name.
Their names were, you might say, a godsend, though in fact Angel is not her baptismal name; she was given it at university. Her family knew her as Biddy, which she hated – “it sounds like a workhorse; Biddy was always the cook in the kitchen, the washer of Jesus’ feet. Nothing glamorous about it.”Angel finds the whole idea of being the Queen of Taste very funny – “Oh Angel, you’ve got such wonderful taste,” she mimics, “mm, mm, kiss, kiss, kiss.” But her business is something she takes very seriously. Christmas is a major production here in White Hart Lane, where chi-chi Barnes threatens to fizzle out and become mundane Mortlake, and where a few unglamorous traders – motor mechanics, launderettes and Indian newsagents – are still holding their own against a tidal wave of decorating and antique shops.For four days each November the windows of the shop are blacked out while Angel and a team of helpers set about creating Christmas Angel is the motivator, her brother Sean the doer. “You know those builders who always say `Oh you can’t do that’,” explains Angel, “Sean is the opposite.” This year what she had in mind was a small cottage in the shop, with a bedroom window looking out on to a gloriously gloomy garden of lilies of the valley, hyacinths and amaryllis planted in tin tubs, old wooden sieves and enamel mugs. Sean’s solution was to dismantle a derelict shack in the country and rebuild it in the shop.Re-using things is a driving force in Angel’s life. “I think it’s a matter of feeling sorry for things,” she muses, “but it’s a wonderful feeling when you can use even the tiniest scrap of marvellous cloth to make something new.”Her Christmas baubles are upholstered in sections of old fabric, the joins covered in braid and then they are embellished with old beads or sequins.
She also makes exquisite trios of padded hearts and shoe decorations out of antique fabrics. Nothing is cheap: at the same time as people are wandering round the shop loudly proclaiming, “It’s a poem, an absolute poem,” you can also hear quite a lot of sharp intakes of breath and incredulous whispers as tweed-skirted ladies try to convince each other that the decimal point is in the wrong place.Angel is not apologetic about her prices – after all, she knows exactly how much labour went in to each piece. And however much some customers may mutter under their breath, “I could do that”, the truth is that they probably couldn’t. The sewing she does is a lost art these days when for the average female a running stitch is something one gets in the side during aerobics.Angel did O-level needlework but it was handling old things and seeing “the beautiful way they were stitched that made me want to do it.
The trouble today is that people want everything to be quick – and so the world gets filled with badly made things. This is why I hate all these `craft’ books with their `short cuts’; all they do is diminish expertise.” But she hates the idea of being thought of as someone who rejects the new. “I think it’s just that it’s easier to judge quality when things are worn because you are not seduced by their immediacy I suppose you could say I was a coward. But also if you’re buying second hand you are generally getting better value because you are not paying the initial making price.

The way our pitchers are throwing and our bats seem to hit at opportune times, it will be a challenge for either of those teams to beat us the necessary two times in order to send us packing.I’ll leave you with two challenges:1. They are 2-0 with fresh bodies for their Friday evening matchup against the winner of the Miami/Stanford game Wednesday night. This fact played out in our favor in Omaha.We as Georgia fans now sit back in Athens with our Diamond Dawgs in the drivers seat. One yearly visitor to Rosenblatt stated it best when he told me, “we don’t really hate Miami…we just want them to lose every time they take the field.” Alex and I joked about football rivalries and how they never died. Several players told us after the game that they would remember that moment for the rest of their careers.–before going on further I should explain that our matchup with Miami won the hearts and support of Nebraska fans in the stadium. Suddenly, however, our noise merely served as motivation for the baseball fans who chose Georgia as their team for the evening.
Applause and cheers scattered from around the stadium before the announcer asked for the same from the Georgia fans. Standing, the Georgia section around us exploded in yells and applause. The announcer came over the loudspeaker and explained the tradition before asking, “so let’s hear it from our Stanford fans…”. We sat with friends and guests of the team behind the Georgia dugout and we were amazed at the way Omaha had embraced our Bulldogs. It is Rosenblatt tradition to measure the support of each team before the game. We described our emotions during the regional and super-regional rounds and they let us into their world as Division I baseball players.Monday evening and our victory over Stanford will go down as a memory to share with the grandkids. Rarely does a fan get to spend quality time with the individuals who perform on athletic stages such as the one in Omaha We told some of our stories and heard even more of theirs. So, as we were in Omaha, we went out for a steak that lived up to its billing with several of the players and their families.This experience alone made it a trip for the ages.
By 7pm, the only thing left to do was eat dinner and sport our red and black around town for another night. Now they sat–with Stanford–atop Bracket 1 in the famed ‘Blatt. The day passed oh so quickly as we relived the day before with players, their parents and other Bulldog faithful. I looked at Alex and mumbled, “I can’t believe we beat the Hurricanes” and without hesitation he agreed. The Dawgs had one foot in summer vacation and wood-bat leagues when they trailed Louisville in Athens a mere two weeks before. The team won its opening game over the CWS’s #1 seeded Miami Hurricanes with late inning heroics and impressive bullpen performances by Alex McCree, Dean Weaver, and Joshua Fields. Sunday morning came after a night on the town in the Old Market District. Little did we know the Bulldogs would make the trip worthwhile less than 5 hours later. If you have yet to make the visit, Rosenblatt Stadium is set on the ledge of a grass hill in a residential neighborhood outside of the city’s downtown. For five dollars, we parked in a field behind a local home and promptly started the festivities.
Though our room was not ready immediately, we made ourselves at home without hesitation. We checked our bags and made our way to Famous Dave’s for a bite to eat before heading out in search of an illusive tailgating location. Joseph’s, Missouri and were greeted by several players at their (and our) hotel in Omaha. Hopefully, in time, Keith Hernandez will come down from the broadcasting booth to run this team the way that it should be run, with a firm hand, and with a strict mindset.. How much more time will it take until the rest of the team follows suit? More importantly, at the end of the year, who is going to want to take over this circus? Right now, taking the Mets job is a career suicide, and any smart individual would not even interview for the position, let alone take it!What can be done then?
