My date’s warm salad of wood pigeon, crispy bacon and black pudding was far more fun: a sexy cornucopia of tasty bits’n’slices, the pigeon tender and thickly textured, the pig’s-blood pudding full-flavoured, the three components nicely locked together by a prune-y sauce.From the wine list I chose a South African Spice Route Pinotage at a rather steep £27, but it was delicious, cramming chocolate, raspberries and vanilla into the same velvety mouthful. The Pot Kiln’s wine glasses have no stems, by the way, so that if they fall over (as demonstrated by Ruth, the restaurant’s friendly, cerise-haired maitresse d’hotel) they roll from side to side like Weebles – best not to try this with a glass full of P?us ‘82.Since the trigger-happy Mr Robinson (“There are three thousand muntjac deer around these parts – about one per acre. I shoot them early in the morning and at dusk”) made his name with game dishes, our main courses were easy to choose. My pav?f wild fallow venison was wonderful – thin slices of pink pav?teak draped like exhausted dancers over a bed of mash and accompanied by a chorus line of long skinny carrots. I’m usually suspicious of attempts to bury the charnel-house whiff of venison beneath fruity sauces, but this was fine – a thyme jus, reduced with port and Madeira. Across the table, the braised leg and roasted saddle of rabbit was going down fast.

The battle to dictate the identity of the college in the next millennium has pitched a group of staff, claiming an ally in the ghost of the institution’s Christian Socialist founder Frederick Maurice, against the principal, Lord McIntosh of Haringey, Labour’s deputy spokesman in the House of Lords.The row centres on plans approved by the college corporation, a board of trustees and directors, for a fundamental shake-up of the way the institution is governed. The proposal is for the present system, in which the corporation oversees the college’s trust funds but delegates educational and policy matters to an elected council of staff and students, to be replaced with a single governing body.The rebels claim the move, which they hope to challenge in the courts, is undemocratic and out of keeping with the founder’s ideals since it would leave no more than one-third of seats on the new body for teachers and students. But Lord McIntosh and the college’s warden, Evelyn Murray, insist that a change is essential if the tradition of providing education for people with little access to other forms of study is to be continued.Malvern Hostick, art teacher, college council member and a critic of the reforms, fears they will destroy a key aim of the founder who saw students taking control of their studies.

RON ATKINSON says he has no regrets after announcing he will retire from management at the end of the season, following Nottingham Forest’s relegation. “Everything must come to an end eventually and this seems as good a time as any,” he said. Atkinson revealed his decision after Forest’s 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa on Saturday sent them back to the Nationwide League.
