London E17. If we count from one to 10, the number of numbers is, well, 10! The next set of 10 begins with 11; the same logic applies when you count in hundreds and thousands The Christian calendar goes from 1BC to 1AD There is no year zero None of us can lay claim to living in our 0th year. Even so, the year 2000 is not the beginning of the new millennium. If Dionysius had got his sums right, we should have celebrated the new millennium in what we still call 1996 or 1997.
But, let us allow, for the sake of argument, that this is indeed the 1,999th year since the birth of Christ. Sir: I’ve had enough! I just cannot stand it any more! My time as a member of the silent minority is over.

The world needs to know! Next year is not the beginning of the new millennium. Dionysius Exiguus was an abbot who lived from 500 to 560 AD – anno domini, meaning, “In the year of our Lord.” Dionysius invented the BC/AD system of dating He missed out three or four years. that paternity is difficult to prove”.Neither of these approaches stands up to scrutiny in 1999 and the provision seems clearly at odds with the right to respect for “private and family life” and the protection from “discrimination on any grounds such as sex” enshrined on the European Convention on Human Rights. This affects not only couples in the unique situation of Messrs Drewitt and Barlow but the children of all unmarried British fathers who wish their children to benefit from their paternal ancestry for nationality reasons. In this case, the Secretary of State may well choose the “soft option” and decide to exercise his discretion and “register” the twins as British nationals because of their links with the United Kingdom, a different process of acquiring British nationality as a matter of “gift” rather than “right.” The prominence given to the issues raised in this case, however, hopefully will lead to serious consideration of the rights of unmarried partners to pass on their nationality by descent.WESLEY GRYKSolicitorLondon WC2. Sir: The potential problems faced by the gay parents Barrie Drewitt and Tony Barlow arise from a socially and scientifically outmoded section of the British Nationality Act 1981 (“Gay parents fight to win UK citizenship for twins”, 13 December). While the Act states that “a person born outside the United Kingdom … shall be a British citizen if at the time of the birth his father or mother … is a British citizen,” the Act goes on to define “mother” and “father” as including the mother of an illegitimate child but not the father.
This approach derives from the approach taken in a parallel context by Lord Denning in the 1955 Court of Appeal decision of In re M (an infant), where Lord Denning explained: “The reason is that the law of England has from time immemorial looked upon a bastard as the child of nobody, that is to say, as the child of no known body except its mother.”Sir Roger Ormrod in the 1982 decision of R v Secretary of State for the Home Department, ex p Crew recognised that, sociologically, times had moved on and there was “a strong movement to eliminate so far as possible the difference between illegitimate children and legitimate children.” He, instead, put forward a “scientific” explanation, citing “the inescapable fact …

These reefs, found in the Atlantic Frontier to the north-west of Britain, are endangered by new oil exploration wells in the area.
The report from these oil consultants is a blatant, albeit weak, attempt to cloud these two issues.SARAH BURTONCampaign DirectorGreenpeace UKLondon N1. It is the large deep-water Lophelia reefs, formed over hundreds of years and supporting hundreds of other species, that are at risk. Sir: Your report “Rare coral discovered clinging to North Sea oil rigs” (9 December) is based on research by oil industry scientists. It is not the individual coral species that are threatened – the coral Lophelia pertusa is common and widespread in UK waters. Sir: Your report on the use of Hatfield aerodrome for filming war epics (11 December) starts: “Hatfield, famous for – not very much really Not until it became the setting for Saving Private Ryan … .” How about the wartime de Havilland Mosquito? Or the Comet, the world’s first commercial jet airliner? I suggest that these real outputs from Hatfield aerodrome are of rather more significance than the site’s sad decline to its current use as a film set

It is a deliberate attempt not to please everybody, though, and if you don’t want to have a good time then there are alternatives to Virgin. At the end of the ad a lot of destinations flash up, which says: it’s a big world out there, and we can help you get out there and start enjoying it.It’s like a wish-list for lads – travel, crazy times, scantily clad women – as if the guy had walked into the ad straight out of Loaded, which might put some people off. The brand represents the free spirit, so it’s wholly appropriate that it offers enjoyment as opposed to merely getting from A to B, and I applaud the lack of aeroplanes and more mundane aspects of travel. Virgin are saying they’re more in the entertainment business than the travel business. We see him playing golf on top of a building, skinny-dipping in the bath with what look like two naked girls, and wearing make-up – a reminder of Richard Branson dressing up as a bride to launch his wedding service. It’s all a lot of fun, and that’s the Virgin difference: they’ve brought in rock ‘n’ roll values against the stuffy, British, efficient and quality image of BA.

The things they’ve chosen to put into this ad are interesting: there’s a lot of sexual activity, and naturally a lot of travel shots. We then go into a sequence where the guy’s life flashes before him. The guy is joined on the bench by the Grim Reaper who taps him on the shoulder, pointing upwards to the plummeting statue. Someone shuts a window somewhere above him, causing a statue to break off the building and plummet towards him. Virgin Airlines

They operate under a higher degree of security than their colleagues, many of whom are Conservatives.BMP is Britain’s fifth-biggest agency and boasts an impressive portfolio of blue-chip clients. As the election could be called any day now, BMP has a range of posters and plans for party political broadcasts locked away in a secret vault at its headquarters, a converted building near Paddington Station that was built by the Great Western Railway.Convinced that its campaign is on the right tracks, it is expected to stick with the same economic theme all the way to polling day. The Labour account is handled by a small unit drawn from BMP’s 350-strong staff and a few other sympathisers from elsewhere in adland. (Another sibling, Charles, was Margaret Thatcher’s top foreign policy adviser, but he even pronounced the family surname differently: Pow as in toe.)Having slipped from favour in the bitter aftermath of the 1992 election defeat, Chris Powell and his pro-Labour creative chums are firmly back in favour. Both obviously delight BMP DDB, which was re-entrusted with Labour’s political advertising shortly after Mr Blair became leader. Its chief executive is Chris Powell, whose younger brother Jonathan is Mr Blair’s chief of staff. Labour has bought what is known in the trade as the “Benetton package” – prominent, quality sites throughout the country. The assault comes as a fresh independent survey has revealed that Labour’s ads are packing considerably more impact among former Conservative voters than scaremongering slogans such as “New Labour, New Danger”.A poll conducted earlier this month by Opinion Research Business for the stockbrokers HSBC James Capel found that only 8 per cent of those who have strayed from the Tories since 1992 have been persuaded to reconsider their political allegiance by M&C Saatchi’s attempts to demonise the opposition.More than half (55 per cent) say the campaign has made no difference while 37 per cent say it has made them even less likely to vote Conservative. The ORB/Capel poll found that two anti-Tory messages devised by Labour – “Next time VAT on food” and “22 new taxes” – were recalled by more voters than any created by the Conservatives, including the infamous “demon eyes” attack on Tony Blair, which was recalled unprompted by just 12 per cent of the survey sample. These results reflect the findings of a focus group convened recently by the Financial Times in conjunction with the ad agency FCB. Three 48-sheet posters branding the Conservative leader as a two-faced liar will have high visibility nationwide from today. Contrary to initial press reports, this cruel idea was vetoed not by Tony Blair but by trustees of Roger Hargreaves, the creator of this children’s cartoon.Although disappointed by that refusal, the agency BMP DDB feels its alternative could prove just as effective.

Honest John is being called a two-faced liar.
Labour’s ad agency had hoped to run an even more personalised and negative campaign, portraying the PM as a spineless, dithering version of the Mr Men. Having branded the Tories with responsibility for a string of tax rises and raised the spectre of VAT on food, the critical focus is being tightened on Mr Major. The Labour Party’s pre-election advertising campaign entered a Major new phase over the weekend when its strategists unleashed a fresh poster blitz pinning the blame explicitly on the Prime Minister for the Tories’ vulnerable record on taxation. Looking at his mournful smile and thick, hard-working fingers, I’m suddenly glad I am not a politician. But there is a fury and freshness which comes as a necessary shock to the half-awake system Steadman is back. These are drawings so furious it is difficult to speak of enjoying them. They careered around the US together, most famously following the 1972 Republican campaign from Miami.

Thompson had never come across someone so genuinely horrified by American lifestyles and wanted to expose Steadman to more and more.”We were a couple of mavericks, we hadn’t got proper accreditation, we were pissed – we were forever in a terrible state. It was still part of the hangover of the Sixties.”For Steadman, Miami with Nixon was a spectacle of surreal horror, suffused by the imagery of the alligator swamps on which the city was built, and he eventually fled back to Britain, with a cheap plastic alligator in his pocket from an airport vending machine, which then became the dominant image for the American drawings. He worries that “it might be hard to sustain politicians’ legs as a good support system” and that he will end up “playing the game” again – become a cult, he jokes, for foot-fetishists.I think not. “It shows that we are all flesh and blood and that no one has all the answers.”So the legs of John Major and Kenneth Clarke are to be followed by a “Three Graces” featuring the legs of Virginia Bottomley, Gillian Shephard and Ann Widdicombe: bad news for them, even though “you will never see a politician’s face in my drawings again”. He thinks that exposing the veins and muscles, the human carapace and processes, is the best way of debunking the arrogance of politics.

Dubcek had become the CPCz’s leader in January 1968, and within weeks Czechoslovakia was embarking on a new path which brought the end of censorship, the re- emergence of non-Communist organisations and the promise of far-reaching market-oriented economic reforms. The economic downturn in the early 1960s and the failure of Antonin Novotny, the long-standing CPCz leader, to follow the de-Stalinisation programmes of some of his Communist neighbours, had fuelled widespread discontent which, in turn, prompted growing demands for change within and outside the party. It was in these conditions that in 1967 Mlynar became head of an inter- disciplinary research team whose task was to work on the development of democracy in the Communist system. In the mid-1960s, as the long winter of Communist orthodoxy was beginning to be assailed by the first harbingers of the Prague Spring, Mlynar became a senior official in the CPCz’s legal affairs department. Between 1951 and 1955 he studied at the law faculty of Moscow’s Lomonosov University where he and Gorbachev became, in Mlynar’s words, “a pair of close friends”.A year after his return to Prague, Mlynar joined the Institute for State and Law of the Academy of Sciences. Their fate – and that of the Prague Spring – was sealed by the fact that the Czechoslovak reforms were being shaped at a time when the Soviet empire was reaching its most expansionist phase; and that the Kremlin’s incumbent at the time was not Mikhail Gorbachev but Leonid Brezhnev who had zero tolerance towards more liberal forms of Communism.
Born in Vysoke Myto, in eastern Bohemia, in 1930, Mlynar joined the CPCz at the age of 16 and worked for the party’s youth wing after secondary school.

As the top intellectual in the CPCz leadership, Mlynar was in many ways the brains behind the charismatic Dubcek. Mlynar was a close associate of Alexander Dubcek, the leader of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (CPCz), whose short-lived experiment to launch “socialism with a human face” was brought to an abrupt end by the Soviet- led military invasion in August 1968. Nearly 20 years before Mikhail Gorbachev embarked on his ambitious and ultimately unsuccessful attempt to reform the Soviet system, Zdenek Mlynar, one of his friends from his student days in Moscow, had tried to introduce similar policies when he was a member of the Czechoslovak Communist leadership that presided over the Prague Spring of 1968. Nicholas reported: “It is to be hoped that the new newspaper, the Sun, will make some contribution to the wider interest of the trade union and Labour movement.”Jack JonesHerbert Richard Nicholas, trade unionist: born Bristol 13 March 1905; Clerk, Port of Bristol Authority 1919-36; District Officer, Gloucester, Transport and General Workers Union 1936-38, Regional Officer, Bristol 1938-40, National Officer, London 1940-56, Assistant General Secretary 1956-68, Acting General Secretary 1964-66; OBE 1949; Member, National Executive Committee, Labour Party 1956-64, 1967-68, Treasurer 1960-64, General Secretary 1968-72; Member, TUC General Council 1964-67; Kt 1970; married 1932 Rosina Brown (deceased); died 15 April 1997.. The TGWU had distributed 200,000 leaflets and used publicity in its journal to try to increase the circulation of the Herald to prevent its demise, but without success. In trade union circles generally, he was renowned for smart debonair appearance, invariably wearing an Anthony Eden hat and nice clothes.

One newspaper reporter during the automation strike in the West Midlands during the 1950s mistook him for a Scotland Yard detective. As union policies changed in the latter years of his service Nicholas moved slightly to the left. On one occasion, in response to press criticism about his change of approach on TUC policy, he said he was merely carrying out decisions made by the 39 lay member- executive of the union, with which he now agreed.Towards the end of Nicholas’s period as acting General Secretary of the TGWU a decision was made by the TUC to sell the full rights of the old Daily Herald to the Mirror Group. His smooth, polished nature helped to avoid too much trouble but he did not fit in easily to the rough and tough problems of the shop floor. He found it difficult nevertheless to apply Deakin’s authoritarian stance in dealing with members in dispute and the shop stewards in the various industries. But there was no doubting his conformity with Deakin’s ultra-right wing approach, especially so within the confederation of ship- building and engineering unions. From 1936 until his move to the secretaryship of the Labour Party he was employed in the full-time service of the TGWU and operated as a national officer from 1940 onwards in the road haulage, chemicals and engineering industries. But other factors beyond his control were the main cause, not least Ted Heath’s successful line of bringing prices down “at a stroke” and Harold Wilson’s lacklustre performance, plus the over-tight budget of Roy Jenkins.

“As long as I understand accidents, then it’s all right for me.”Accidents to other drivers, however, perturb Schumacher. He reveals that he had to be persuaded to get back into his car after Mika Hakkinen’s horrific crash in practice in Adelaide last year, and only did so once he had been convinced it had been caused by mechanical failure. “If I had seen that a driver as good as Mika could make a mistake and the result was so serious, then I would know I could make a mistake as well and have the same risk as Mika.”The book charts Schumacher’s career from childhood to the present day and includes interviews with some of the key figures behind his rapid rise to the top. The best passages, however, are the interviews with Schumacher himself, particularly when he is talking about his fellow drivers. While he has the highest regard for Alain Prost and, particularly, the late Ayrton Senna, there are digs against most of his contemporaries. Interestingly, the team-mate who earned perhaps his greatest respect was Martin Brundle and Schumacher reveals he tried to persuade Ferrari to make the Briton his partner at Maranello. The account of Schumacher’s early years in motor racing is particularly revealing, and the story of how he got his first grand prix drive with Jordan and was then immediately snapped up by Benetton is a fascinating insight into the backstage politics of the sport. It is only a shame that the book is not longer: after the 144th and last page I wanted more of the same.. For the second time in five months, Andrew Golota’s uncontrollable penchant for low blows lost him a fight against Riddick Bowe after twice putting the American on the canvas.

The Pole, who was ahead on on all three judges’ scorecards, was disqualified in the ninth round of Saturday night’s a non-title heavyweight fight full of wild, slugging punches.
Golota had a point deducted for an intentional butt in the second round, lost another point for a low blow in the fourth round and was disqualified two seconds before the end of the ninth after sending the Bowe to the canvas with another low blow. Golota was later taken to hospital with a suspected broken jaw.”He was warned, and I took away a point for a butt earlier and I took another point away for a low blow that was really blatant and then the third low blow, and that’s a disqualification,” Eddie Cotton, the referee, said. The fight was a crowd-pleasing slugging contest as the two heavyweights, often looking exhausted, battled it out. Bowe was knocked down twice and Golota once.Golota, who was disqualified in the seventh round in July after repeated low blows, knocked down Bowe with a right and a left to the head that dropped him to the canvas in the second round. Bowe got up and Golota continued pummelling him around the ring, but Golota had a cut open underneath his left eyebrow.Bowe, who has lost at least 45lbs since last September, improved in the fourth round, catching Golota with a flurry of combinations that knocked the Pole down for the first time in his career.Golota got to his feet quickly and almost immediately started throwing very low blows, for which he was warned. Finally Bowe went down after one of them and the referee took a point away and Bowe took about a minute to recover.

He could have taken up to five minutes.Between the fourth and fifth round, one of Golota’s trainers, Lou Duva, told him to aim higher “I don’t want you to go to the body anymore. Everything goes to the head.”In the fifth round, Bowe seemed exhausted and was throwing lazy, looping punches. Golota caught Bowe with a rash of blows up against the ropes. Bowe came off them but Golota sent him reeling with another combination, ending with a right to the head.It seemed to be all Golota after that, with Bowe at times seeming so tired he was having difficulty standing up.

He seemed only a faded image of his old self but it did not matter as Golota beat himself again.Ray Mercer, who narrowly lost a 10-round decision to Lennox Lewis in May and last won a fight in 1993, outpointed Tim Witherspoon on Saturday night to put himself into the heavyweight picture. The 35-year-old scored with stiff left jabs and sharp rights to the head, to gain a unanimous decision over the former twice heavyweight champion. It was an important victory for Mercer, who lost 10-round decisions in tough fights against Evander Holyfield in 1995 and Lewis. He also had cost himself championship bouts with losses on decisions to Larry Holmes in 1992 and Jesse Ferguson in 1993.”I think I won the fight. I won it clearly,” said a disappointed Witherspoon, who is 39 in two weeks “I conditioned myself for this kind of fight It was easy.”The three judges, however, saw it differently.. “Get back to where you once belonged,” thought some when promoted Derby County started their Premiership campaign this season but Jim Smith’s men are refusing to “go home”, and were impressive when gaining a 2-2 draw against Arsenal at Highbury.

Unfortunately, British players are averse to clay, or certainly have been since Tony Mottram and Geoff Paish featured in a 5-0 victory on the slower surface in Lisbon in 1949, the only other occasion the nations have met in the competition.
The court factor could have a decisive bearing on whether Tony Pickard’s team advance to the draw for the World Cup qualifying round, to be played in September, or are faced with a Euro-African Zone Group 1 relegation play-off against South Africa or Romania in July. So I’m still looking forward to calling in that piece of advice. And an early orchestral song-cycle of his entitled Nocturne, suggesting the influence of Bartok and Britten, had been favourably received at the 1960 Cheltenham Festival – even if Peter Heyworth of the Observer had, characteristically, complained of its insular spirit of compromise compared with the revolutionary innovations of the continental avant-garde.
What the programme could hardly reveal was just how hard- earned the striking confidence of Scenes and Arias had actually been – not least for reasons hinted at in Heyworth’s review. When the two finally combined effectively in the 85th minute, Speedie spooned the ball into Ian Walker’s arms from six yards out.As the game came belatedly to life, Dixon had a header cleared off the line and Richard Hall’s volley was tipped over by Walker.Almost immediately, Paul Allen, clear through at the other end, dragged his cross behind two free team-mates.

But it is rather worrying to see how the rise of anti-European feeling has broken out again in this country – and not only in the Conservative Party.’Beverley AndersonEducationist, broadcaster and Labour supporter: ‘My feeling is one of dismay because the Government is not confronting the realities. The three clubs of Inverness pondered: financially, it made sense to join forces and bid together as, say, Inverness United.
But football loyalties dictated otherwise. It is hard to avoid the conclusion reached in your leading article (18 January) that the action ‘looks like racial discrimination’. With the high street now bundled up into an out-of-town superstore, what other space is there where ‘community’, however defined, can be renewed? But do we really hate our parks? The evidence seems to indicate otherwise. Some have decided to stay on for the long haul, politely buying lunches and waiting their turn. As stated in our customer’s initial letter, our representative offered (Mr Walsh and his girlfriend) a change of accommodation, but this was not accepted as they did not want to have to pack and unpack again.’Milenko Bisic, head of legal and customer services, said misunderstandings often arise because on the Continent two rooms means a bedroom and a lounge, while in this country people would expect two bedrooms plus a lounge.’We would have offered alternative accommodation if it was available, but we would not have offered compensation because someone was disappointed, because we would not have been in breach of contract,’ he said. One common difficulty that holiday-makers face when making a claim for compensation is measuring the loss they have suffered.

Until Dalglish arrived, Walker’s cash was only relevant in terms of the club’s survival. Few authors possess a grain of Clare George’s intelligence, even fewer manage to splice a regularly amusing, often moving narrative with ideas of the range exhibited here. His investigative reporting is lethally painstaking (see how he pieces together the biography of an American missile which somehow came into Israeli hands, was fired at an ambulance and killed an innocent Lebanese family). But the sense of inescapable doom which builds up in this book is misleading. Television industry insiders in America are quietly acknowledging this weekend that a trend long predicted but never quite proven may at last be coming true: the appetite of the viewing public for reality television shows has finally been sated Especially tired, perhaps, is the celebrity-reality format. A few weeks into the all-important autumn season, a new pattern seems to emerging where old-style dramas, including a new series on ABC television about the first woman in the Oval Office, called Commander-in-Chief starring Geena Davis, are displacing the reality programmes in the race for ratings.
“The decline of reality is official now,” Warren Littlefield, the former president of NBC Entertainment tells Broadcasting and Cable magazine in tomorrow’s issue. Others just like a brawl, as anyone will be aware who heard the staggeringly awful debate about the Iraq war between Christopher Hitchens and the Respect MP George Galloway.

I don’t know if this is why they are taken more seriously than intellectuals here, but I suspect Pinter’s short fuse and acute sensitivity to criticism are in some measure the result of enduring years of sniping from the right-wing press. The problem is that such defensiveness fuels a pugilistic atmosphere, to the point where intellectuals sometimes undermine the causes dearest to them. It may not be an accident that both come from a part of the world where writers risk imprisonment, the fate facing Pamuk if he is found guilty of “denigrating Turkish identity” at a trial in Istanbul on 16 December. Over the next few days, I’ve no doubt that Pinter will be mocked as much as he is congratulated, in a way that wouldn’t have happened to the other rumoured candidates for the prize. In Turkey, my friend Orhan Pamuk writes controversial political novels but inspires a degree of popular affection hard to imagine being bestowed on a novelist here; once, walking in Istanbul with him late at night, I was astonished when Pamuk was approached by a reader who engaged him in lively debate about his latest novel.
The Lebanese poet Adonis (Ali Ahmad Sa’id, who was born in Syria but moved to Lebanon in 1956) is no stranger to politics either, writing elegiacally about the Israeli invasion of his adopted country and making powerful interventions in recent debates about secularism and the veil. But while his behaviour is extreme, I think it says something about the status of the engag?ntellectual in this country, where literary success and political commitment sit uncomfortably together. As an introduction to British intellectual life it must have been awesome; in fact I know it was because the guest of honour, a brilliant American crime writer, mentioned it when we met for lunch in London only last month

There are dozens of such stories about Pinter. Pinter, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature last week, took umbrage at a remark from one of the guests about nuclear weapons, launching into an angry speech which ended only when someone diverted his attention by asking the Test score.

He reminded me of a literary dinner we attended some years ago, which was enlivened (if that is the right word) by a spectacular outburst from the playwright Harold Pinter. One evening last week, at a debate in west London on the state of the media, I ran into a publisher I hadn’t seen for ages. The build-them-up-knock-them-down cycle has turnedfaster than ever before.

More from John Rentoul. The press hounding of David Cameron over whether he has used class A drugs has been sudden, vicious and overwhelming. It is so long since the Tories have known what it was like to feel that winning was even possible that they were vulnerable to the artificial stimulant of the Cameron leadership campaign

After the high, the low: the paranoia and self-doubt. The party felt energetic, young and talkative, convinced that it could carry all before it.

The Conservative Party has a drugs problem. For a moment it was flooded with feelings of euphoria, confidence and well-being. A friend of my father’s once said I had enjoyed the privilege of seeing things that no other man had seen. But after a flood of questions from students in Sydney about suffering in the Middle East, I began to wonder if my privilege had not also been my curse

More from Robert Fisk. And all the while, my book was coming to haunt me.How does war affect you, they kept asking, and I put on the stiff upper lip and said I had grown used to it; which is a lie, as I eventually admitted at City University in London, because dead children and dead women were beginning to sadden me more than they used to when I saw them.I told the journalism students there that when I saw families walking happily in London or Paris, I wondered whether I had not missed out on life, that perhaps comparative safety and security with nothing more than the mortgage to worry about was preferable to the existence I had chosen for myself. Ouch.I kept quoting the Israeli journalist Amira Hass – that our job was to “monitor the centres of power” – to which a lady, a member of a Jewish society I addressed a week ago, sagely remarked that the media, too, was a “centre of power”. At Westminster School, a boy asked me for a solution to the Middle East – the wisest question of all, to which, of course, I had no answer – while in Canberra, I was pointedly asked what journalism is for.

“What would you ask him if you saw him now?” I was asked in Glasgow on Friday “I’d ask him ‘Why?’” I replied. So many of them, including an Iraqi soldier who died during the Iran-Iraq war. Close to his decomposing corpse I lay crouched under shellfire, noting the wedding ring on his blackened finger, still bright with love for a woman who did not realise that she was a widow.Because I’ve met Osama bin Laden, it seemed that every Australian or British or Lebanese student these past two weeks wanted to know what he’s like (answer: naive and dangerous with a ferocious faith and self-conviction), and I fear I’ll never shake this man from my side. The BBC’s Philip Dodd stared at me over the Night Waves microphone this week and pronounced GWFC to be “an elegy to the dead” and “a walk through graveyards” and suggested that I reminded him of a Victorian liberal with a passion for empire.Yes, the dead are there. Indeed, it was a dear friend of mine who realised my state of depression one afternoon and insisted that I walk by the sea and drink a pint of Guinness and think of other things I’ve felt the same these past few days. I endure what must be weightlessness. My book, a 1,366-page tome called The Great War for Civilisation (henceforth GWFC), is about the pain, injustice and genocide of the Middle East It was a distressing book to write. Or any of the places on three continents I’ve been in the past 12 days I don’t suffer from jet lag.

I grew up watching Rick Pitino bitch at press conferences and Antoine Walker doing his shimmy. But it wasn’t because they played in Boston and I lived in Massachusetts. But that didn’t translate to other sports and it’s pretty easy as to why I didn’t grow up watching the Knicks, Giants, or Jets because my parents weren’t big basketball or football fans. With basketball I’ve always been a fan of players rather than teams, but if I were to pick a team as my favorite (after Michael Jordan’s retirement) it would be the Celtics. The first NBA game I attended was a Celtics game. When they came back to the states, they landed in New Jersey with family, and as a result became Yankee fans.It just so happens that they moved to Massachusetts, had kids, and took them to Yankee Stadium instead of Fenway Park. So I grew up a Yankee fan and it’s pretty hard not to; they’re the greatest franchise in professional sports. They were both born in New York City before each moved to Puerto Rico within 6 months.

It’s pretty simple.I became a Yankees fan through my parents. So, in effect, it’s Red Sox Nation. Second, I’m a Boston Celtics fan.Now you’re probably thinking, “What the ****?”Yup, I know Most people probably don’t think it’s possible, nor allowed But I’m going to tell you how it happened. A pretty big one too.I grew up going to Yankee Stadium, watching Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera demonstrate greatness and Scott Brosius and Chad Curtis adding enough to win championships (I’m 19, so that’s growing up for me).So you’re probably thinking, “OK, and…?”.First, I’m from Massachusetts. Not from Boston, but Worcester, the second most-populated city in New England, located about 45 minutes from Beantown. I am a New York Yankees fan. Again, you didn’t need me to tell you that he makes a fraction of what Dontrelle Willis makes.Once again, the Marlins seem to time the right moment to sell-high on their big players and find cheap, young players to fill in.I commented on Rich Lederer’s recent column over at The Baseball Analysts and pointed out the ‘Top Three/Bottom Three’ phenomenon.Rich responded with “just as practice doesn’t make perfect…perfect practice makes perfect, spending does not equal success…only wise spending equals success.”I totally agree. Now, let’s just see if this can hold up throughout the rest of the season..

None of those three are making more than $500,000 this year.Cantu has replaced Cabrera at third, and he has hit more home runs and has a higher OPS than his predecessor so far this season. You didn’t need me to tell you that he’s making a fraction of what Cabrera makes. And what about Andrew Miller? The 23-year old has a 2.77 ERA in his last nine starts, and he has been one of the best starting pitchers in the National League during the months of May and June. Who needs $200 million anyway? As I write this, the three lowest-payroll teams in baseball (Marlins, Rays, and A’s) have a better record than the top three payrolls (Yankees, Mets, and Tigers). The Marlins continue to exceed expectations. They’re three games back in the NL East and six games over .500.In the offseason, they unloaded Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis, in an effort to cut a third of their payroll, to a league-low $21 million. For what its worth, the Yankees are paying Alex Rodriguez $28 million this year, and they find themselves with a worse record than the Marlins. The Marlins have received huge contributions from unlikely guys, like second baseman Dan Uggla (156 OPS+), third baseman Jorge Cantu (121 OPS+), and outfielder Cody Ross (.503 SLG). Hopefully, in time, Keith Hernandez will come down from the broadcasting booth to run this team the way that it should be run, with a firm hand, and with a strict mindset.. How much more time will it take until the rest of the team follows suit? More importantly, at the end of the year, who is going to want to take over this circus? Right now, taking the Mets job is a career suicide, and any smart individual would not even interview for the position, let alone take it!What can be done then? Right now, the skies are very cloudy over Flushing, Queens. The Mets lost to the Angels before, and, in addition, Manuel took out Jose Reyes after an injury when he did not want to leave the game. True, Manuel was only looking out for his star shortstop, but considering that Reyes threw his helmet off in disgust afterwards, it is safe to say that he did not agree with the call. One game in, and one player is already upset, and a huge player at that.

Combine this with the fact that many are headcases on the team to begin with, and this is a perfect recipe for disaster. The move has already backfired in a way. Soon enough, the players are going to be wondering whether or not they are safe as well. One need not look any further than the shining example set forth by Billy Wagner, who, just a few weeks ago, blamed only the players of the team for not playing as expected.During the middle of the season, a move like this is never a good thing People near the top of the organization lost their jobs. In addition, the team fired Randolph right after the beginning of a West Coast road trip. Finally, in what many are deeming a classless move, they announced the decision through a press release at 3:15 AM EST. Leave it to the Mets to make such a terrible call. The players liked Randolph, even if they were not playing up to par.

The European Football Union yesterday clarified the position regarding the transfer system and nationality rules following the Jean-Marc Bosman judgement. “The commercial and environmental benefits are obvious,” he says.”Why not put President Chirac into a cellar with fungus and dynamite and let him make his own mushroom cloud?” asks David Urquhart.Nicholas E Gough sent us, in a brandy bottle, 50ml of reconstituted cloud – very useful if you are thirsty, he claims N Edwards sugg- ests drying clouds for convenient storage. We hope you have a merry one and return refreshed for our next encounter, with mad cows. Meanwhile, for when we return in the new year, we are looking for things to do with 1996. “Then, whenever there’s a drought, you can just add water and make rain.”William Salaman says there are four main types of cloud: Sheadtratus, Nimbheadus, Cheadumulus and Cheadirrus, but we think his head may be in the clouds.Prizes to Bill Fowler, A Marshall and Gilbert Wood Next week is Christmas.

More ideas:Store on car roof and drop between low sun and windscreen when necessary (Jeanette Solomons); potty-train them and sell results to Yorkshire Water, or blast into space to create White Holes, or cut up to make wigs for bald sheep (A Marshall).Gilbert Wood advises capturing clouds from aircraft and using their contents to make tea or coffee for the passengers, thus reducing the amount of water needed on board, and thereby saving fuel. Richard Branson returns in an idea from Mike Farriss, who suggests stuffing cumulus clouds into the Virgin king’s balloon to keep it airborne. “The Government,” Duncan Bull says, “should confiscate every cloud and extract the silver lining. The resultant worthless clouds would be stockpiled and sold to needy water companies during droughts. (Several other readers suggested transferring silver linings from clouds to suits or duvets to increase their value or tog value.)”If bottled,” says Janet Walker, “they could be used by psychiatrists who run out of ink for Rorschach tests.” Stuart Cooper gives instructions for constructing a personal shower from a cloud and a very long piece of string. Pull down the soft woolly ones, advises Bill Fowler, and use for packing delicate items or as ear-muffs for elephants Or use to plug the holes in the ozone layer. Clouds are for cuckoos to land on, says Betty Roe.
Roll up and use as earplugs for giants, suggests Jan Moor.

Clouds, says Michael Rubinstein, may feed the visual poetic imagination almost beyond endurance. Bringing them down to earth, however, he suggests they may be used “to wallow in a fog of pseudo-romantic euphoria”. Mollie Caird says they are useful for wandering lonely as, while Nicholas James takes a more social approach, suggesting clouds should be introduced to each other more often, so that they won’t have to wander lonely. Clouds, says Len Clarke, are very useful for naughty politicians to be under. Clouds, says Rosie Trevelyan, were invented by Richard Branson to bring visual relief to passengers staring out of the windows on long- haul flights.

He could start by trying to raise morale among dejected teachers. The best start would be a period of stability in schools as we come closer to the election, instead of questionable organisational change that an alternative government would quickly unstitch.. Instead of flogging a policy that does not want to run, the Prime Minister should listen to Mrs Shephard and instead concentrate on developing schools in their present framework. Mr Major is a politician in a hurry, worried that Labour will take power and kill the self-government ideal. He is behaving like many of his predecessors, Labour and Tory, who were too desperate to leave their own institutional mark on the education system. Like them, Mr Major suffers from the illusion that you cannot improve schools unless you reorganise them.He is mistaken: there are many other ways to raise standards. But she has been unable to convince her boss to swallow his pride and drop his controversial proposals. So why is Mr Major persisting with an unpopular policy shift that could have bishops denouncing him from their pulpits? Because he now realises that school self-government is unlikely to take root in the school system before the general election. In the past school year, 15 out of the 4,000 voluntary-aided or church schools conducted ballots of parents, and of those only six voted to opt out.Mrs Shephard for her part has spotted the storm ahead and is against changing the balloting rules.

So far, only one in 24 schools has opted out and only a trickle are in the pipeline. But if it is not genuinely optional for parents, then it loses its Tory raison d’etre. And Mr Major’s plan is politically inept. The churches do not like it: their schools already enjoy considerable autonomy and most do not want any more distance from their local council. Opting out can, indeed, offer schools a chance to free themselves from what can be the dead hand of council bureaucracy. He desperately wants to increase the number of self-governing schools. And he seems incapable of accepting reality: that most parents do not, in fact, want their schools to break away from the local council.
This fixation is becoming serious.

And at a mere eight and a half hours, this Synge-along will seem quite short.Druid Theatre Company performs the complete plays of JM Synge at King’s Theatre, Edinburgh (0131-473 2000) Saturday to 3 September. Anyone who saw Olivier Py’s marathon 12-hour production of the Claudel when it came to Edinburgh last year will surely recognise Woods’s summary of it as “extraordinarily beautiful, funny, transcendent, dazzling the eye and the mind,” a description that could equally well be applied to Synge’s six plays. That’s a powerful statement, as potent now as it was a hundred years ago.”Having come close to Synge, to the extent that he too turned to the old legend of Deirdre of the Sorrows for inspiration, Vincent Woods recalls being mesmerised by Paul Claudel’s Le Soulier de Satin in Orl?s while writing his own work. “I marvel that he was capable of writing women’s characters of such individuality. Take The Shadow of the Glen: in a short half-hour play, the woman makes the decision to walk out on the roads rather than be imprisoned in a loveless marriage. And she made that choice not just because she was married to an older man but because she saw marriage to a younger man as having the same repressive effect on her. The Well of the Saints centres on two blind beggars, a man and his wife, who have their sight miraculously restored by a saint but who lose their happiness in the process.”I find an amazing resonance in his female characters,” says Hynes.

He was an accomplished violinist and he also studied French at the Sorbonne. It was on a visit to Paris that he met James Joyce, with whom he had many “friendly arguments”.Riders to the Sea – whose desolate Aran landscape is the background for a mother’s tragic loss of her last two sons to sea – highlights both the struggle of man against nature and its acceptance by women with no alternative. There that he revelled in the sense of life that he couldn’t find in his own surroundings.”Despite his poor health, which resulted in his early death from cancer of the lymphatic glands at just 37, Synge travelled, and studied music in Germany. He loved every living creature yet was shockingly aware of death.”He seemed imprisoned in the effete nature of his own class, a dying breed, and on his trips to Wicklow and the Aran Islands he took photos and made notes on the life and language of the communities he encountered. That, along with his celebration of the worth of the individual, makes him wholly contemporary. He had a horror of the role of an institution in repressing individuality.”Which of the many threads running through Synge’s work – the balance of illusion and reality, the solitude of women, and the natural cycle of life and death, for instance – does Hynes consider the most distinctive? “Actually, the fine line between tragedy and farce,” she replies, “which is to do with his ability to turn round at the brink of the grave and celebrate the vitality of life That’s got a lot to do with his own life.

He knew instinctively what he wanted to write about and what he believed theatre to be, and he pursued that totality of vision, formed by his uncompromising nature, throughout his life. Those historical connections fenced him in, overshadowing the power of the plays. Synge could never be thought of now as someone isolated at the other end of a century. He runs like a seam through modern Irish theatre history,” says Hynes.”The sense of his importance used to be purely in the context of his role as the founder-director of the Abbey. “The stark nature of Beckett’s vision chimes exactly with Synge’s. The idea returned in the last five years, partly fuelled by our belief that, as a company, we should put on productions that others couldn’t or didn’t.”The parallels between Synge and Beckett (“two great theatrical scions of the Dublin Protestant professional class,” O’Toole observes) intrigue Hynes, and not just in their shared inspiration from tramps and beggars or in people whose actions were far removed from their words.

The notion of doing them altogether took shape in the early 1980s but both financially and in terms of what theatre was basically about at that time it was impossible. “Everything was very much about the status quo, and anything which disturbed that, which Synge most certainly did, was of little interest. It was while rehearsing Playboy when Druid was formed, in 1975, that we realised what an extraordinary play it was We simply had to continue our engagement with these plays They spoke so vividly to us. In 1950 the Anglo-American Eric Bentley, directing at Dublin’s Abbey Theatre (founded by Synge, WB Yeats and Lady Gregory) noted that Synge “emptied the theatre for five years”.”There was a sense that Synge was of the past, and it was also to do with the social and cultural milieu in Ireland after the founding of the state,” explains Hynes. Of all Hynes’s Druid productions Playboy, which she has recently approached afresh, has been acclaimed for replacing “the lush and the languid with the raw and the immediate” in which “sex hangs in the air and dirt clings to the floor”.
