He then added that his cousin was picking him up at Stansted, and could he offer me a lift home?By now I had realised three things: first, that he was not a terrorist; second, that he did conform in some ways to the racist stereotype that I had tarred him with; and third, and most disturbingly, that the racist stereotype had come so irrepressibly to mind. It is no consolation to know that other minds, in these coming weeks, months, even years, will behave in similar fashion.b.viner independent.co.uk. We’ve had the shocked silence, we’ve had the period of reflection (an amazing 36 hours), and we’ve heard as many narratives as we need to reach our judgements. On both sides of the Atlantic, opinion is beginning to elbow reportage from the airwaves and to fight for its share of newsprint. The Hawks and Doves – who we thought had become as scarce as the sparrows – have come fluttering and swooping out of their various nests and eyries. Michael Howard thinks we should go in hard, Paddy Ashdown thinks we should be careful, Henry Kissinger says … Well, I’ll come to HK in a moment. The finger is being pointed generally at the Middle East, of course, but after that, jabs frenetically at different places on the map It’s Iraq says Israel.
It’s Afghanistan where Mr bin Laden is a hero to the Taliban (did he blow up their enemy, General Masud, last week?) It’s a whole load of places, says Henry Kissinger But we’ll return to him later. In any case, it’s all the fault of domestic liberals, who’ve wanted to play everything by the book, and respect international law and other such wussy things. There’s a bin Laden mole in the White House right now, says respected US columnist William Safire. In any case, the need is for America to strike and to strike hard and to strike widely.
Rising to meet the old hawks are the old anti-Americans, for whom nothing has changed since Vietnam. Some seem to believe that the United States actually deserves to be bombed by religious nutters (as long as said nutters are from the authentic Third World). “Now they know how the Iraqis feel,” one correspondent to The Guardian yesterday wrote fatuously from her safe home in Bedale in Yorkshire. Perhaps in her next, longer letter she could enlighten her fellows as to the last time that the US deliberately shot down four civilian airliners and immolated up to 10,000 people of all nationalities in a building that had no military significance whatsoever.I am paying too much attention to these Bourbons of either side but – as Tim Garton Ash said in these pages yesterday – what is done now could well determine the circumstances under which our children are forced to live and fight.
We need to do the right things, the intelligent things, the things that we are not bitterly regretting in 10 years’ time. You only have to look at Afghanistan. Until the mid-70s, this mountainous state was ruled by a king and suffered bandits and poverty. Its descent into becoming a society where men are forced by law to grow beards and shave their armpits and women to be illiterate, run by a coalition of religious Pol Pots was not inevitable nor inherent. A softish communist government overthrew the king, a hard-line communist coup then overthrew that And the Russians came in Never mind what the Afghans wanted.
Deal with the handguns, the poverty, injustice, racism and lack of social hope, and I suspect the molecules and genes will largely look after themselves. Your leading article (“No natural born killers”, 13 February) got it spot on.Yours faithfully,Steven RoseBrain and Behaviour Research GroupFaculty of ScienceThe Open UniversityMilton Keynes13 February. Of course, individual genetic differences contribute to differences between who and how we are as humans – no biologist could possibly argue anything else. However, if we are asked what accounts for the alarming level of violent crime in the US, or for that matter to rather less alarming ones in Britain, to provide the answer “something about the genes of American (or British) citizens” is as foolish and unhelpful as it would be to answer “something about the molecular composition of handguns”.The question is being posed at the wrong level, and good science, like good social policy, means finding the determining level at which to ask and answer questions. But what I have never done is to deny “that individual differences in human behaviour have a genetic” basis.
Every human except identical twins is genetically unique, and all including identical twins are environmentally unique.
Sir: May I make just two points of clarification on your report “Scientist denounces criminal gene theory” (13 February)?
It was my hyperbole in a brief phone call with Tom Wilkie that led to the reference to the US young male homicide rate having doubled; the actual death rate rose 54 per cent between 1985 and 1994. It is Patrick McKenna, ably assisted by a number of first-class executives, who runs the Really Useful Group, thus allowing me the freedom to concentrate exclusively on my writing. I do not have to worry about business affairs and I take no part in them – I don’t even have an office at the Really Useful Group.
I should also point out that, whereas I am flattered at being credited for writing the Conservative Party theme tune for the last general election, the tune was in fact written by Henry Purcell.Yours faithfully,Andrew Lloyd WebberLondon, SW114 February. We have received nothing but praise for this title, and have come across nobody who remotely agrees with your views on Street Racer.
Yours sincerely,VERA SHAHMarketing ManagerUBI Soft LtdHampton Court, Surrey6 February. Sir: Your article “The cloning of Andrew Lloyd Webber” (11 February) is very kind to me, but perhaps even more important, it recognises the vital role that the Really Useful Group, lead by its chief executive, Patrick McKenna, has played in realising the full potential of my work, particularly in new markets around the world. I cannot claim the credit for these developments within the business as I am the composer, not the businessman.
As a multicultural team, we are very sensitive to the issue of racism in society, and I must stress that we are not in the business of peddling such politics and feel very unhappy about your irresponsible diatribe. Whatever your feelings towards the marketing of the product, we can assure you that no offence was ever intended. Sir: As publishers of the game Street Racer, we would wish to deny that it is racist, as suggested by Paul George in his open letter to Nintendo (26 January) You take the words “race riot” out of context The actual phrase used is “Race Riot .. Street Racer”. The message is clear: the game is about taking part in a race; and riot refers to the commonly used expression “it was a riot”, meaning amusing revelry. Sir: In his article on the bombing of Dresden (“Rubble-rousing stuff”, 13 February), Steve Crawshaw writes: “Hiroshima apart, there has never been a raid like it.” This is not so, for when the Americans bombed Tokyo on 9/10 March 1945, 16 square miles of the city were devastated with a loss of life estimated at between 80,000 and 200,000 people
Faithfully,
E PAULLLondon, SW1613 February. I’ve known David Regan for 30 years, been a colleague for 17, had much talk with him in his last months, and particularly his last week, and might have been able to assist an inquiry operating under less restrictive procedural rules than the coroner imposed.Yours sincerely,MIKE MCDOUGALLBeeston, Nottinghamshire13 February. We don’t want to travel the path of counselling and psychiatry as a corrective to oppositional postures.
I noted, at the inquest, the coroner’s refusal to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
Apparently, his suicide notes suggested this was the case, and if so, an inquiry seems the appropriate response. Perhaps he had private griefs, disappointments, self-doubts – and counselling might have helped here. But perhaps he was -at least partly – making a moral protest against the style of government of his university. Well-intentioned though those members of the university council who suggested this service may have been, one is left with the depressing feeling that they see Professor Regan’s death as avoidable if only he had been counselled.
This was the historic rapprochement of Labour and the LibDems, a goal close to Tony Blair’s heart but to few others in the party. With both Paddy Ashdown and Peter Mandelson gone, this aspiration has apparently been finally killed off.The quiet demise of New Labour does not, however, mean a reversion to Old Labour – or any of the disparate ideas that we now identify with that phantasm. More traditionalist members of the Labour Party have been crowing at Mandelson’s fall – “ring out the New, bring in the Old”, as one put it last week – but going back is not an option. For one thing, Labour’s message is still in the hands of people who were once New Labourites: there is no reverse gear on their car. More importantly, the world has moved on: if a second-term government is going to fulfil its historical promise, the party must find a story fit for new times. It is in this context that the events of recent weeks should be seen: one of the least noticed but most significant consequences of Mandelson’s departure has been his removal from the inner core of those who will draw up the party’s manifesto. The question is whether a different kind of message – or “narrative” as Labour strategists call it – will emerge now that the arch-priest of New Labour has gone.Tony Blair’s speech last week began this process. Its dominant theme was equality of opportunity – not simply a “Darwinian” meritocracy, but one in which those with fewest advantages are helped by an active government, “investing in our people and in our public services to release the potential in all”.
Equality of opportunity is a notoriously slippery concept, capable of a weak, liberal interpretation, as well as a strong, social-democratic one, but this was as close to the latter as Blair has come. What the speech did not contain, however, is a theory of government to go with this new egalitarianism. For the almost complete failure of the New Labour project to establish an ideological identity – who, still, can explain the Third Way? – was ultimately due to its ambivalence towards the role of the state.New Labour wanted to improve public services; but it couldn’t bring itself to defend the value of taxation. It wanted to promote public-sector investment; but also to privatise air-traffic control and the Underground. It implemented the minimum wage; but resisted EU directives on working time and worker consultation for fear of “over-regulating” business. It redistributed income; but refused to talk about it in front of the Daily Mail. In the end, it was these fudges that fatally undermined the attempt to define a meaningful New Labour philosophy. As that project fades into history, the challenge is to reconstruct a coherent idea of what government is for There is still work to be done; but the outlines are clear.
A modern left-of-centre government should pursue the active management and regulation of the global economy. It should promote the quality of life by protecting social space, personal time and the natural environment. It should redistribute opportunity, including both income and assets. And it should provide tax-funded, user-focused and accountable public services for all. Will the manifesto achieve such ideological clarity? It is not there yet, but the noises emerging from both No 10 and the Treasury are encouraging. Facing an Opposition that does not believe in government at all, the opportunity in this election is for the party to articulate a genuinely coherent philosophy relevant to the conditions of the 21st century. “New Labour” is dead; long live new Labour? The author is general-secretary of the Fabian Society.

Critics have noted that Twin Peaks contains a mixture of several TV genres. The series’ fundamental lines of action combine the soap opera with the detective story. In soap opera, parallel stories spin out over many episodes, branching and crisscrossing.

What’s more, while everything looks to be business as usual, Small Time Crooks has got some big-time sponsors: it emerges, grandly, under the auspices of Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks studio. It seems that commercial pressure gets to even the greatest. Following two decades of steady output – a film every year, without fail – Woody Allen has a new movie out within six months of his last, Sweet and Lowdown. Perhaps with rising costs and dwindling audiences he has decided (or has been advised) to step up his already conscientious work rate. What’s more, while everything looks to be business as usual, Small Time Crooks has got some big-time sponsors: it emerges, grandly, under the auspices of Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks studio.
I wonder if this major-league clout explains the rather play-safe nature of Allen’s latest offering. For one thing, it transports him way back to the time of those “early, funny” pictures he once affected to despise; Small Time Crooks has more in common with the slapstick comedy of his debut Take The Money and Run (1969) than with the pungent domestic dramas of Husbands and Wives and Deconstructing Harry. For another, he casts himself in a more ingratiating role – as a one-time convict and full-time criminal bungler – than his trademark intellectual malcontents and whiners.
Was it a deliberate move on his part to steer clear of anything that might possibly offend his new distributors? He doesn’t seem to have exercised the same consideration towards his fans. The first sight we get of Allen in this movie he’s wearing a regrettable pair of denim shorts, and later will spring even nastier sartorial horrors on us (Check the tuxedo with gold-trimmed lapels). He plays Ray Winkler, an ex-con who’s always devising get-rich-quick schemes which his manicurist wife, Frenchy (Tracey Ullman), wearily dismisses. “I’m going up on the roof,” he says sulkily after their latest argument. “Don’t jump,” she replies, “you’re too valuable as a dishwasher.” Eventually Ray persuades her to front a cookie store while he and his nefarious companions – Michael Rapaport, Tony Darrow and Jon Lovitz – toil away in the basement digging a tunnel into the bank along the street. As Ray boasts, he was known as “the Brain” in prison, and is put out when Darrow quietly informs him, “Ray, they were being sarcastic.” What with bursting a water main and reading their map upside down, the bank job is added to the list of Ray’s miserable failures.Frenchy’s baking, on the other hand, is a hit.
Her cookies are soon selling like, well, hot cakes, and in next to no time she and Ray are operating a nationwide franchise. Their new-found wealth buys them a fancy uptown apartment, which Frenchy transforms into a nouveau riche temple of gold and leopardskin. But she isn’t content merely to take the money and run – “We got no class,” she laments to Ray, and applies to an English toff, David (Hugh Grant) for a crash course in cultural development. The spirit of Judy Holliday and Born Yesterday is at work here, and Allen slips some light comedy through the gap between aspiration and actuality. While Frenchy is eagerly scrambling up the social ladder, Ray hasn’t taken to their “hoity-toity” lifestyle one bit.
She wants to eat pheasant and snails, he wants a cheeseburger. As a Strauss waltz booms away, he winces: “Can we change the music? I feel like I should be wearing a wig.” He prefers the old life of poker, take-out Chinese and late-night screenings of White Heat, and he finds an unlikely companion for it in Frenchy’s toweringly dim cousin (an inspired Elaine May). The film crackles in this middle section, even if there’s a whiff of condescension in Allen’s take on his arriviste couple. Sometimes it’s very funny, as when David points out Henry James’s former residence “Who?” asks Ray “The band leader, stupid,” snaps Frenchy In other ways, it feels mightily false. Allen never convinces as a blue-collar New Jersey crook, and the kvetching tone he uses with his wife leads him into some bizarre locutions: “I’m gonna slam your head off,” he warns Frenchy, who happily ignores him. Ullman is more comfortable in her part, though she too is rather betrayed by a galumphing (and unconvincing) display of vulgarity when she takes a call on her cellphone amid the hush of a Venetian chapel. It’s odd, because Allen is usually such an acute observer of boorishness: I still smile to think of Sean Penn’s wonderful turn in Sweet and Lowdown as the bumptious jazz guitarist – a classic Portrait of the Artist as a Rat. Penn’s performance was funny, but it was also moving, because the script allowed him to suggest a whole lifetime of neglect and self-loathing. Here, even allowing for the lighter tone, we get no sense of Frenchy and Ray having an inner life, or even a life previous to the story.Even the old standbys of slapstick look shaky.
In a later sequence of the film Ray turns up at an old-money soirée intending to steal a necklace from an upstairs safe. His efforts to ascend the staircase unnoticed are foiled three times, and each time it’s a little bit more laboured than the last. Farce needs to fly by to be effective; this practically hobbles. It also suffers from perhaps the weakest ending to any Woody Allen movie I’ve seen, a hurried bit of business that suggests either he ran out of time or else lost interest and wanted to wrap it up fast.So it’s a disappointment, but that’s no reason to despair.
However, he was told yesterday that Palacio had tested negative for the virus before their bloody eight-round contest in Britain last year, and has been advised medically that he does not need to take an AIDS test.’I've been told the chances of me having contracted the virus were infinitesimal,’ said the 27-year-old Barking fighter, who suffered a cut above the nose while Palacio was cut above his eye during their bout.’I'm very relieved, because when I first heard the rumours yesterday, I was very shocked and so was my wife,’ McMillan, a father of two, said. This was off a waist-high full toss, but it was another one from Cummins, a good deal closer to head height, that caused a certain amount of controversy while Atherton was batting.Part of Cummins’s repertoire is a back of the hand, looping leg-spinner, similar to the one Franklyn Stephenson used to bowl for Nottinghamshire, and when it goes wrong – as it did this time – it comes out as a slow beamer.

And it left us with the question of where he could go next before this fevered intensity disappeared into the vortex of its own psychosis. Here is his answer a scatter-gun sequel to Tabloid that takes us from the aftermath of Kennedy to the assassination of King. Ellroy jump-cuts from Vegas to Vietnam, civil rights to the Klan, with a myriad of plots feeding off each other. The Venn diagram of The Cold Six Thousand looks something like this: the CIA needs the Vietnam war to escalate to feed the military-industrial complex; the Mafia use it as a cheap source for opium supply (and demand); Howard Hughes is moving in on the casinos and sees drugs as a threat to his tourist trade; J Edgar Hoover sees heroin as a way of containing black activism; and the Teamsters see gambling as a way of laundering money. All of the above need to convince LBJ that he really is in charge of the country. It is within these overlaps and ellipses that the narrative can be found. What Ellroy offers us instead of the conventions of syntax is a kind of hipster haiku, bebop snapshots that give menacing hints at the bigger pictures.Ruby’s shooting of Oswald, for example, is as follows: “Hangover The room light hurt The TV noise hurt Alka-Seltzer helped Wayne sipped Alka-Seltzer Wayne saw cops with Stetsons. The TV picture jumped/slapped the box/tapped the dials/the picture cohered A man jumped out Dark suit/fedora Right arm outstretched He stepped up He aimed a gun Wayne blinked.
Wayne saw it/oh fuck.” And so it goes: a relentless staccato of images and rhythms, as though Ezra Pound had resurfaced with a benzedrine-addiction and a taste for neon noir.Interspersed with this graffiti-rap are transcripts of recorded conversations between Hoffa, Hoover and Hughes. Ellroy’s acts of ventriloquism interweave the novel’s various threads, while his use of newspaper headlines is a shorthand for narrative progress. The astonishing thing about this bebop-bricolage is that it manages to take us along with it. The specifics may elude us, but the atmospherics more than compensate. We are as bewildered as his characters, as disorientated as history, in masochistic surrender to the tyranny of words and their treacherous rhythms. There are moments that you may not know what the hell is going on, but it is the going on that makes this compulsive.James Ellroy’s cast of hopheads and whores, his deviants, gamblers, freaks and hoods, are not America corrupted, but America in its purest, uncut form. That he writes of his demons with such awe-ful fascination illustrates the extent to which they still haunt him The Mad Dog is again off his leash Relish his return to his vomit.. Down the Highway: the life of Bob Dylan by Howard Sounes (Doubleday, £17.99, 517pp)
Rock has no definitive history; nor can it have.
Its chronicling is a wholly idiosyncratic exercise undertaken within the shifting parameters of taste and commerce, where each new fad requires a conscious re-evaluation of what has gone before A few players resist downgrading. But straight biography, even with the best intentions, hardly ever explains their survival. Typically, a more or less compelling account of the formative years degenerates into a who-said-what-to-whom assemblage of press clippings until, in retreat from a once carefully cultivated public, the star withdraws: Presley to Graceland, Lennon to the Dakota, Bob Dylan to Woodstock and Malibu. Dylan’s life story, like so many others, is reduced to a litany of recording schedules and concert dates.
Wilfrid Mellers, then professor of music at York University, posed the crucial question in a 1972 essay, “Freedom and responsibility”: “The Beatles have disbanded, Gershwin died young, Irving Berlin, Crosby and Sinatra remained permanently adolescent, Cole Porter survived by becoming exclusively deflatory. Can Dylan preserve his folk-like integrity from youth through the middle years and even into a venerable old age?”As Bob Dylan prepares to celebrate his 60th birthday next month, it seems safe to answer that question in the affirmative.
Avril Lavigne joins five other female celebs in ditching her man.
These would make it a criminal offence for someone in a position of authority to have sex with a young person in their care in four cases: youth detention centres, local authority care, nursing care and full-time education. In this, Jack Straw is going too far. As his former Home Office minister, Alun Michael, pointed out last year, it would mean it was lawful for teachers to marry their pupils but not to have sex with them. The Liberal Democrats should be congratulated for standing up for liberal values. The Sexual Offences Bill received its second reading in the House of Commons a week ago. In response to a spasm of anti-gay prejudice against the equal age of consent for homosexual men, the Home Secretary foolishly introduced provisions against the “abuse of trust” in cases where older people have responsibility for 16- or 17-year-olds, whether of the same or the opposite sex. Of course, sex with pupils under the age of 16 is both wrong and a criminal offence, and Mr Woodhead prefaced his controversial words by saying so.
As for sex with pupils aged 16 or 17, he said that adults “have a responsibility to those who are younger than us and therefore it isn’t a good idea at all”. He should have gone further, and said that the presumption must be that it is a sacking offence. But he was quite right to suggest that each case should be judged individually, and that an erring teacher should not be “automatically drummed out of the profession”.In this, and, despite his disclaimer that he had “no problem” with the Government’s Bill to ban sex between teachers and pupils, his explosive comments perform a valuable service by drawing attention to a bad law in the making. If that were all he had meant, of course, he would not be in so much trouble, and the story would not have been on the front page of this newspaper last Saturday. What he meant was that something positive could come out of such relationships, and it was on this that he was forced to go back yesterday. Which was inevitable, because the man in charge of maintaining standards of teaching should not, as a matter of policy, express anything other than prim disapproval of teacher-pupil relationships.
But, though it is for others to say it, what he said remains true.
It can be educative in the sense that both bank and burglar can learn something from a robbery. A SEXUAL relationship between a teacher and a 16- or 17-year-old pupil can indeed be “educative” for all concerned, as Chris Woodhead, the Chief Schools Inspector, said. Sir: All Christians also implicitly believe in reincarnation since Christ, himself, re-incarnated after his crucifixion. “He died, was buried and on the third day, rose again.”

From a sentient being presently residing in the body of…MARK CUNNINGHAMLondon SE23. Sir: The failure to investigate fully the extent of benefits fraud (“MPs defy Darling over benefit fraud”, 5 February) prompts me to report another instance. My wife received her winter fuel allowance, a cheque for pounds 20, last month, as the only member of our household qualifying; a week later I received pounds 20 on the same terms.
My phone call to the Benefits Agency met with the response that its computer must have failed to detect that we live at the same address (we have been here for 12 years); and that I could keep the money or return it – “some do return it”.PETER HILLTanworth-in-Arden, Warwickshire. Last year, at one of London’s highest-profile fringe venues, I organised an evening of new sitcoms Not a single commissioning editor came. In addition, while the US may produce some excellent programmes, it also produces an ocean of dross. It is our fortune that we only see the few shows which float to the top of this vast reservoir of effluent.
Frankly it is scandalous that, instead of being able to trust their own judgement and feed new British writers a few hundred pounds of seed corn money to develop an initial script, ITV companies prefer to let our ideas rot in favour of spending a fortune on patronising, second-hand advice.I could, at the drop of a hat, produce a list of new home-grown writers with original ideas and genuine ability, all of whom have proved themselves in live comedy, radio, or smaller scale TV. Britain has a proud tradition of original comedies driven by one or two writers, some of them even transferring successfully to the home of “guru” Tom Carsey. Until Mr Blunkett addresses this, it scarcely matters whether he offers the kids penny whistles or bagpipes. Electronic keyboards and computers will not, of themselves, make music lessons creative.
MALCOLM ROSSDartington, Devon.
Sir: ITV’s recruitment of a “US sitcom guru” (report, 4 February) is their latest insult to home-grown comedy writers and an implicit admission of the failure of the network’s own commissioning staff. The reason is the Government’s failure to supply enough half-decent music teachers able (and allowed) to engage the latent enthusiasm of their students. I would be happy to show him round.Councillor DAVID SULLIVANLeaderLewisham CouncilLondon SE6. Sir: The pother about musical instruments in schools (leader, 5 February) entirely misses the point.
Nowhere was this clearer than in Super Bowl XLII.The New England Patriots had just finished a season where they had done the unthinkable: won 16 regular season games, plus two more in the playoffs. So, coming into the Super Bowl, they were 18-0, and the media hype machine was at full throttle.Questions fluttered about in the sports world like confused bats: Was New England the best team ever? Were they better than the 1972 Dolphins (the only NFL team to have an unbeaten season)? Could the Giants be more than cannon fodder in this Super Bowl?Games, as this writer has said many times, are decided on the field and not in sports columns or inflammatory headlines. Perhaps the Patriots did not get the message. In the Super Bowl, the Giants defense sacked Patriots “wunderkind” quarterback Tom Brady five times, and the Giants quarterback Eli Manning threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes (aided by an improbable catch by David Tyree) to win the game 17-14.This loss goes down as the greatest collapse by a team in the history of professional sports. The climate of hype and anticipation produced a game that the Patriots simply had to win. And they did not, failing in spectacular fashion.Super Bowl XLII is the greatest sports disappointment (especially for a New England fan), as a perfect regular season of historic Patriot success ended in Giant euphoria and celebration.. The newly acquired wide receiver for the Oakland Raiders, Javon Walker, was found unconscious on a Las Vegas street Monday. He was robbed and beaten, then left unconscious after a night of partying on the strip. The Las Vegas Police Department is running an investigation in an attempt to find out who he was with and where he was during the previous night. All of us who represent the Raider Nation hope that he makes a quick recovery, and is available to play sooner rather than later. As for the rest of the fans in the NFL, be sympathetic to the Raiders in the meantime..
I still have those pictures from Milwaukee. Omar Minaya had come to a crossroads with the Mets season and franchise: Return Willie’s call and set up a face-to-face meeting, or hope the text message sticks and Willie decides not to show up at the ballpark the next day?It was clear that the Mets had already made it a priority not to handle things professionally and Omar shot Willie back another text. ”Sorry man it’s just the way it’s got to be. It’s really not you, it’s me. I just need to see someone else for a little while. You’re stuff will be outside of Shea on Monday, near the airport side. Mr. Met will still do your kid’s birthday party. On me. Peace”$$O-Dog$$The writing had been on the wall for a while with Willie, and now it was etched onto the screen of his cell phone. Willie Randolph was now unemployed and had eliminated Omar Minaya from his “five.” You stay classy, New York Mets. . This year marks the 20th anniversary of one of the greatest movies ever, Bull Durham. This movie goes beyond baseball and simply makes for an entertaining story. I’m sure I don’t have to give the background on Crash Davis, Annie Savoy, or Nuke LaLoosh, but reading about the time since its first release gave me an idea. One of the continued topics at the Roundtable is the greatest baseball movie lineup I’m going to bring in what we think it is. There are several criteria. First, nothing can be based on a true story or star professionals. That rules out Cobb, Mickey, The Rookie, Field of Dreams, and Fever Pitch. Second, you can’t use players from little-league teams unless they actually put on a professional uniform, ruling out Hardball, The Bad News Bears, and The Sandlot (except Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez). Third, no animals.
This was basically to rule out someone using Air Bud or the monkey from Ed. Finally, college players count. So go ahead and open up Summer Catch. Here’s what we have. I’m anxious to hear from others, and see what they would go with here, so post comments, please. C: Crash Davis (Bull Durham) You can debate here between Jake Taylor and Davis for hours (and we have). I give Davis the final nod because of his impact on the pitching staff and his infinite wisdom off the field. He may never have made it to “The Show” permanently, but he knows how to handle young pitching and provides some power towards the bottom of my lineup. Taylor, though solid, is aging and has bad knees. He’s consistent, but I’d rather have him on my coaching staff than trying to throw out runners Backup: Rube Baker (Major League II) 1B: Jack Elliot (Mr. Baseball) First base is a power position, and Elliot personifies power.
