Having missed half-a-dozen games this season because of domestic and international suspension, he has been in disappointing form since returning, and has been undergoing extra training to regain some sharpness. Injuries permitting – Rooney has to pass unscathed through Manchester United’s match with Newcastle this afternoon – they are the favoured pairing for the European Champion-ship qualifier against Macedonia at Old Trafford. Crouch’s extraordinary inter-national scoring record (11 goals in his past 10 games) has made him a more regular choice for his country than his club, where Rafa Benitez has frequently fielded Dirk Kuyt alongside Craig Bellamy in Liverpool’s attack. It was just like the old days for Scott Parker on Thursday night.

Sitting warming the bench for 80 minutes of Newcastle United’s 2-1 Uefa Cup first-round victory against Levadia Tallinn was a reminder for the midfield dynamo of the bleak time stuck on the sidelines at Chelsea that was such a pain in the Nicky Butt. “Yeah, it was a bit like the old days,” the Newcastle captain mused “Bit more comfortable, these benches.”. With his determination to explore new frontiers and to boldly go where no England England manager has been before, there has always been a touch of the captain James T Kirk about Steve McClaren. Just before Manchester United journeyed to the Nou Camp to claim that 1999 Champions’ League final, the then assistant manager at Old Trafford was enlightening a number of us as to the wisdom of Vince Lombardi, the iconic late coach of the Green Bay Packers..

Almost 18 months after first joining the England squad, Peter Crouch should finally start a game in tandem with Wayne Rooney on Saturday. It was there that Roy Keane produced one of the most remarkable performances in his remarkable career to help propel Ireland to the 2002 World Cup. And it was on the Mediterranean island that the fate of Brian Kerr as manager was sealed last autumn. Again the Irish were victorious – although such was the paucity of their performance that it felt like a traumatic defeat – before ultimately failing to reach last summer’s World Cup..

For a nation of such modest achievements in football, Cyprus have proved astonishingly influential in the fortunes of the Republic of Ireland over the years. It was there that John Giles decided to resign as manager, after the first qualifying game for the 1982 World Cup, even though the Irish won. The former Scotland manager was locked out of the Stade de France last month when he turned up to work for BBC Radio Scotland as France put Italy to the sword in the Euro 2008 qualifiers. A security man refused to give Brown his accreditation because his name was not on the list – in the very arena where Brown had led out his Scotland side against Brazil eight years previously for the first match in the 1998 World Cup finals.. It is generally held, mini-World Cup or not, to be a competition too far, especially as the real World Cup is being held next spring. It has never won hearts, and the last two events have hardly helped.

Was there an American editor at work? The supernatural takes the form, in a comfortingly old-fashioned way, of a genie in a bottle in The Blue Bottle Mystery by Kathy Hoopmann (Jessica Kingsley, £7.99.) This is a slight book, as wispy as the smoke that Ben and his friend Andy keep seeing at key moments, but it has a serious purpose which it wears lightly.Ben, baffling to everyone as much for his extreme mathematical intelligence as his repetitive movements and his very literal interpretation of language, has – it turns out – Asperger’s syndrome That is one solution to the mystery. It’s the first venture into fiction by this publisher, which has cornered a niche market in literature on Asperger’s and autism. The next in the series, Of Mice and Aliens, will be published later this month. It works even better as a story, with the addition of an even more literally-minded alien called Zeke. The supernatural in Carlo Gebler’s Caught on a Train (Mammoth, £4.99) serves an entirely different purpose, placed as it is in the context of a well-crafted historical story.

This book is honestly derivative: Gebler acknowledges the three magical Irish folk tales, which Archie, a cook’s boy on the train from Dublin in 1899, is asked to judge. They are interwoven into a spellbinding story in which the contest is not as simple as it seems. After all this, it is oddly reassuring to turn to the straightforward setting of a Dick King-Smith farmyard. His Funny Frank (Doubleday, £10.99) is the story of a chick who would rather be a duckling and is helped to achieve his desire by a wetsuit made from an old hot water bottle. This may seem implausible, but not nearly as much as the fact that the mother has time to make fruit scones for tea on a regular basis Now, that really is fantastic.. The nation and the world,” wrote Dr Martin Luther King Jr in his celebrated 1963 “Letter From Birmingham Jail”, “are in dire need of creative extremists.” Guy Debord, founder and philosopher-king of the Situationist International, may not have been precisely what Dr King had in mind, but the description fits him as well as any other.

The Situationists were the master sloganeers of the May 1968 uprising in Paris; they were a primary influence on Malcolm McLaren, who embedded a gleeful homage to their techniques and tactics in his propaganda for the Sex Pistols, and their concept of d?urnement – the subverting of pop-culture imagery by contradictory texts – finds its echo in the “culture-jamming” of anti-capitalist art terrorists. The Situationists were cultural terrorists. It was unfortunate for them that they were often confused with real ones. (A wealthy Italian publisher friend of Debord’s did, however, have a “secret life” in the armed wing of the struggle. His crusade to abolish his class came to an abrupt end when a bomb he was working on exploded, and he merely abolished himself.) Their paradoxical, provocative slogans and pronouncements were designed as weapons to destabilise intellectual rigidity and force others to think outside the box.

“Be realistic,” they insisted, “demand the impossible”.
There were very few of them; they mostly hated one another; and they all revolved around Guy Debord. As was appropriate for a group of artists who reached Marx via Surrealism (with, in Debord’s case, Lettrism and Dada not far behind) and led by a man who acquired much of his Marxism the same way Marx did, from Hegel, they were prone to splits and expulsions. This tendency played itself out only once Debord had expelled everyone except himself and one other, who was then deported. Which left one.Debord’s defining contribution to 20th-century thought is embodied in the subject of his dense, sparkling 1967 polemical analysis, The Society of the Spectacle. The spectacle of the title is not simply the media, but almost all culture and debate. “Quite simply,” wrote Debord, “the spectacle’s domination has succeeded in raising a whole generation moulded to its laws.”In other words: capitalism’s most appalling crime is the manner in which it has colonised our collective unconscious. The tract is made up of 221 numbered paragraphs occupying 154 pages; if it had been written in the discursive prose beloved of Marx and Engels, it would probably have been as long as Capital.

As it is, the more appropriate comparison would be with The Communist Manifesto, except that for Debord, in the words of another Situationist slogan, “the commodity is the opium of the people.”In what Jon Savage describes (in his virtuoso punk exegesis England’s Dreaming) as “a brilliant collage of avant-garde art, Marxist theory and existential obnoxiousness,” Debord and the Situationists struck out with “manifestos, broadsheets, montages, pranks, disinformation.” Daniel Cohn-Bendit, the activist formerly known as Dany The Red, may have been the public face of les ?nements of May ‘68, but – despite being the smallest and least well-organised of the various factions – the Situationists proved the most influential in terms of defining the moment. They uttered the Big No, and Debord was their glittering theoretical wing: “The aggressor is not the one who rebels but the one who upholds authority.”Guy Debord was born in 1931 into a family on the point of ceasing to be wealthy. A bullying stepfather unwittingly instilled in him a profound anti-authoritarian sensibility which led him towards the transgressive: first in literature – Goth Boy, of course -– then in art and, finally, in politics. The primacy of anti-authoritarianism as a governing principle guided him through the worlds of avant-garde art, and the politics of the salon and the street. The Society of the Spectacle demonstrates his mastery of modern Marxism (the section “The Proletariat as Subject and Representation” is as penetrating a Marxist critique of Bolshevik-Leninism in theory and practice as one could hope to read) but, ultimately, Debord was not a Marxist. He recognised that early Marxism provided a uniquely powerful and flexible set of intellectual tools, perfectly suited for attacking the targets he had in his sights, and he used them brilliantly, but he was not necessarily committed to them.

Letterman confessed he had sex with staffers and was targeted by extortionist.

From Lee Dixon’s long throw, Tony Adams headed on to Schwarz, who missed his kick in front of goal. He provided, however, only occasional creativity, and neither does he look likely to take any of the scoring burden from Wright. The first two minutes saw Schwarz’s game exemplified. Only when Manolo came on in the second half was Seaman troubled, twice saving well from the Spanish international striker. At least there was encouragement for them in the competent Schwarz, who fits fully the Graham cut-out-and-keep midfield player, embodying neatness and industry. Kevin Campbell, meanwhile, again indulged by George Graham at the start of the season, had little in common with Wright apart from a shaven head.Atletico Madrid had come from a match the previous day in Spain against Aston Villa and rested their World Cup players: Jose Luis Caminero, Argentina’s Diego Simeone and Mexico’s Luis Garcia. Their only other figure capable of ingenuity, Merson, looks as forlorn as he had at the end of last season.

In their play, however, they lacked just that, apart from Wright. Excitement and the mood of the World Cup is clearly to be found elsewhere in north London, at this time of year at least. After years of betrayal, the new, simplified Arsenal kit they displayed recalls their heritage, the hooped socks adding a touch of class. Manolo and Benitez’s goals made a competition of it but Paul Merson and then, fittingly, Ian Wright converted to end a scrappy contest. David Hillier and Arsenal’s new signing for pounds 1.8m from Benfica, the Swede Stefan Schwarz, also missed. After a goalless 90 minutes, they had to come through another of the penalty shoot-out abominations, beating a weak Atletico Madrid 3-2, thanks to three excellent saves from David Seaman, to reach the final of the Makita Tournament they are hosting this weekend.
In today’s final they play Napoli, who beat the holders, Chelsea, 2-0 in an ill-tempered match that saw the Italians’ new signing from Marseille, the promising young Frenchman, Alain Boghossian, sent off.For a while it looked as if it might be their customary 1-0 in Arsenal’s shoot-out as Lee Dixon scored and Seaman saved from De La Sagra, Kosecki and Esteban. THE STRIP has changed – for the better – but Arsenal remain a tease when it comes to eking out results One-nil to the Arsenal? That was exaggerating it a bit

In fact, it was 0-0 to Arsenal. Klinsmann revealed that he enjoyed the game a lot, that he is going to enjoy the heavy programme, and that he is going to enjoy the cold weather.Asked if he thought there would be harder games than this, he showed that his mastery of the English football cliche is coming along well, too ‘There is no easy game any more.’(Photograph omitted).

Thank you, Mr Sugar. There were no great shocks at the post-match press conference. The fans certainly rate him – as he left the pitch they mobbed him and, heavens alive, ran their fingers through his hair. Will he settle in the team? It looked good yesterday, though clearly no one is quite sure yet who will run alongside him up front But he doesn’t half make you look forward to next season. Miller’s save was positively classy. You can’t honestly say on the evidence of one warm afternoon in Watford whether he really is the inspired buy that Tottenham need to write off that six-point deficit and mount a challenge at the top. It would have been good to report that Klinsmann then clinched his first game for the club with a winning goal, but about the closest he got was in the 80th minute when Barmby put him through but his shot from the right rolled just wide. And just before the final whistle he sent a marvellous header from the left spiralling towards the net. Jurgen who?It was coming up to 20 minutes after the restart when Spurs equalised through Sheringham. It was the most amazing shot, too, from more than 30 yards, in off the bar. Funny game, football.Even funnier, if you weren’t a Spurs supporter that is, was that when Watford went ahead in the 35th minute the scorer, Richard Johnson, was a player who had once been on trial at Spurs and had been spurned.

Between the sticks in a pre-season friendly with Fulham on Wednesday, then saving a bender from Klinsmann yesterday. Efforts to rope in other new talent such as Stefan Effenberg, Marcio Santos and Phil Babb have come to nothing, though there was mounting speculation about the stoat that scuttled across the pitch just before kick-off.The game was just 10 minutes old when Klinsmann executed his first recorded fall of the season, though it was pretty tame stuff, as he merely slipped while trying to get in a cross.Incidentally, he was wearing the No 18 shirt, which must come as some relief to Teddy Sheringham, whose squad number – 10 – was on Klinsmann’s back when he appeared at a Spurs press conference on Thursday.Watford had a new signing of their own to trumpet – the goalie Kevin Miller, who had been sprung from Birmingham in a pounds 250,000 deal. Ilie Dumitrescu was still back in Romania, sorting out his family. When was the last time you saw a very expensive footballer stop to sign autographs on his way out of the tunnel?Klinsmann was the only one of Ossie’s new big signings on show.

How long is that Seventies hair-do going to last in the cut and thrust of British football hairstyling? How would the Tottenham faithful greet this new Spur who up until now has been one of the most demonised players on the world stage? With a standing ovation, was the answer. He is obviously determined to make a good impression. The office equipment store in the Vicarage Road shopping precinct was flogging Klinsmann T-shirts at pounds 9.99 or two for pounds 15, and the stands were chocker with Spurs supporters.Klinsmann’s appearance for the pre-match warm-up prompted some big questions. By 2.45 they had to put back the kick-off to 3.15 because so many fans were still piling in. The Tottenham team bus deposited him outside the directors’ entrance, where his first sight of one of our footballing citadels was a row of garages with corrugated iron sides and some dustbins full of abandoned kit.
What had originally been planned as a nice little pre-season friendly with 6,000 bums on seats if Watford were lucky turned out to be a mega-earning capacity-crowd situation.

Natural wind draughts ventilate the offices and instead of long, impersonal corridors like something out of The Shining, there are swooshing, sinuous ones. Perhaps that’s why the offices within are all such green, pleasant, and light-filled spaces. So their concern that the inhabitants control their own environment – and change the way the building looks at the same time – is interesting. “Also, I like the way the facade randomly and seamlessly reflects what’s happening in the building.”The Sauerbruch Hutton installation plan for these panels is as artistic and rigorously controlled as a Sol Lewitt painting. “This makes the building dynamic rather than static,” Louisa says. Pushing a button to get the right light levels needed in the offices at any time of the day changes the colour combinations on the facade. These can be pivoted, or pulled back flat out of sight behind the glass facade, which effectively takes out a block of colour at a time.

This is a dynamic game that they are playing. The tower on its west side, which gets the sun, is coloured in a mosaic of reds by louvered mesh screens, grouped at the window bays in threes. Wind-tunnel testing in Bristol proves that the GSW cluster could withstand a “twister”. (Of course, it won’t.)Some of the columns are hung from the beams of the main structure to enable a clear 14.5m span where you enter the building on the ground floor. The implication is that without it weighing down that corner, the springboard would tip up under the weight of the tower.

Mr Mitchell and Professor Sikka have also been invited to “stimulate discussion” at that event.Of the leading auditing bodies, only the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland appears to be avoiding the group’s attentions. Mr McNab said afterwards that the discussion on openness, democracy and accountability within the professions had been “most valuable” in helping the organisation to set the agenda for consulting members and students and for October’s council conference at which democracy will be one of the key issues debated. But on Wednesday the new president was confident enough to say: “We don’t need revolutionary changes, we need to pursue a steady evolutionary progress towards even more democracy.”That is just the sort of thing that those steady professionals would like to hear, but it is also the sort of thing that can be counted upon to make Mr Wooller and his colleagues stiffen their resolve in their demands for the whole 109,000-strong membership, and not only the 70-odd members of council, to be able to vote for the president. As was stressed at the AGM, the English institute is not the sole target of this activity. Earlier this year, Mr Sikka, professor of accounting at Essex University, failed for the second time to gain election to the council of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants on a pro- democracy agenda. He and Mr Mitchell have also had a two-hour meeting with Allan McNab and Rod Hill, respectively president and senior vice-president of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants. But there is a danger that the organisation’s hierarchy has already decided what is needed, and that is not much.Mr Currie’s conciliatory but none the less firm speech at the meeting was no doubt at least partly responsible for Mr Wooller attracting only one vote besides those of himself and his seconder, Tony Marshall, in the face of 247 opponents. According to Keith Woodley, president until last week, Mr Gerrard was appointed in order to provide “objective and independent advice” in a report to be presented to council next January. Whether that visit will give him cause for complaint or satisfaction is, frankly, in the hands of the institute.
The day after the meeting the institute’s new president, Brian Currie, used his inaugural speech to council to put democracy and consultation at the top of his priority list.

“I think we have a well-balanced, democratic and open constitution, but we must continue the debate and see what could be changed for the better,” he said.As the previous day, he pointed out that the constitutional review being headed by Peter Gerrard, former senior partner of Lovell White Durrant, would play a central role in the discussions. But, as has been demonstrated in such matters as regulation, the institute is a past master at setting up working parties and initiating debates, but somewhat less accomplished at achieving swift results. But about one thing he is likely to be proved right: democracy, the issue that brought him to the event, is not going to go away. Mr Wooller, one of the so-called Ginger Group that also claims Labour MP Austin Mitchell and the accountancy academic Prem Sikka as members, vowed to be back next year. Jeff Wooller may have received a terrible drubbing at last week’sannual general meeting of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. Wages Act claims must be submitted within three months of the date on which it is claimed that the employer failed to make the necessary payments. Contractual claims made in the courts, by contrast, can be pursued up to six years later..

Public-sector workers would, by contrast, have an immediately enforceable right to holiday.Employees who are not paid holiday pay owing to them can sue for breach of contract in the courts. These claims will usually be heard by the small claims’ court which has the jurisdiction to hear claims of up to pounds 3,000.The alternative is to submit a Wages Act claim in the industrial tribunal. The two-year qualifying required before a claim for unfair dismissal can be brought is presently being reviewed by the House of Lords, on the basis that its length discriminates against women. The House’s decision may affect the length of any qualifying period that the Government may seek to impose in relation to holiday entitlement. If the European court finds against it on the two-year qualifying period for protection against unfair dismissal, the Government is likely to ask for additional time, to enable it to get its legislative house in order. The directive will not take effect in relation to private-sector workers until the necessary UK legislation is in place. In recent times part-time workers have succeeded in obtaining the same protection against unfair dismissal as their full-time colleagues. They have also secured the right to participate in their employer’s pension scheme. The argument by which these rights have been secured is that, as the majority of part-time employees are female, provisions aimed at restricting certain benefits and statutory safeguards to full-time employees are discriminatory.

It is likely that the same arguments would be put forward to defeat any attempt to exclude part-time workers from the right to holiday if the same right is extended to full-time workers.Qualifying periods have also been under attack recently. It is unclear precisely how this qualification may be interpreted. In the same way that employees are not entitled to protection against unfair dismissal or to redundancy pay until they have been employed continuously for two years, it is also possible that the Government may seek to introduce conditions, such as a minimum qualifying period of service, which an employee must accrue before he or she can take advantage of the holiday provisions set out in the directive.A condition of this type may prejudice contract and part-time, workers however. It does make clear, however, that payment can be made in lieu of holiday only on the termination of employment. The directive does state that the right to paid holiday is subject to qualifying conditions prescribed by national law or practice. If the European court supports the Advocate General’s reasoning, the Government will be required to make the necessary changes to the law by 23 November. The directive does not make clear whether the entitlement to initially three and eventually four weeks’ paid leave includes statutory and public holidays. This view was confirmed by the European Advocate General, M Philippe Leger in March this year. His view is likely to be endorsed soon by the European Court, despite the objections of the British Government. This entitlement will extend to four weeks from November 1999.Not surprisingly the British Government has argued that the Working Time directive constitutes part of the Social Chapter, from which it has opted out, and it is therefore not bound to implement the holiday provision. It has, however, been successfully argued to date that the directive constitutes a health and safety measure which is not subject to an opt- out. Although statute does require employers to supply details of any holiday entitlement granted to employees, it does not impose an obligation to provide paid holiday.

According to the TUC, the UK is the only member state of the European Union that does not provide such a right.
The European Working Time Directive, however, which among other things seeks to regulate the number of hours worked by employees, also includes a provision entitling employees to three weeks’ paid holiday. Not a lot of people know this, but employees in the UK don’t actually have a legal right to any holidays at all. The good news, for these unfortunates, is that things are expected to change as the result of a decision in the European court. Small Victorian pieces are often sold in lots rather than individually. A collection of five pieces, a tea-caddy, two boxes, an inkwell and blotter cover recently went for pounds 600, considerably less then they would have cost bought separately in an antique shop.. The delicacy of earlier work was lost as papier-mache was used for anything that could be decorated, from blotter covers to wall panels for a ship’s saloon. The craze peaked about l870 and by l890 manufacture had all but stopped. The vast bulk of l9th century papier-mache is unnamed, but a stamped piece is not necessarily one that will cost a fortune.

The extraordinary has become ordinary; nature has been saturated with grace. The poet Gerard Manley Hopkins compared the Blessed Virgin to “the air that we breathe”. The basic, vital, element of his existence was the mercy granted through Mary’s motherhood, by the life, death and resurrection of her son.Such are the structures of the Christian’s everyday life. Like a sharp- eyed historian, we do well when we remember the furniture.. “You’ll believe a man can fly!” was the slogan dreamed up by the genius publicist Gordon Arnell for the film that could be said to have been the apogee of Alexander Salkind’s career as a producer. For not only was Superman: the movie (1978) immensely popular with the public, it also swiftly became the most profitable film in the history of Warner Bros, spawning three sequels, creating a film star out of Christopher Reeve, and totally justifying Salkind’s faith in developing a mere idea expounded to him by his own son Ilya, who loved the comic strips as a boy. The scale of Superman was immense, and typified the combination of gut instinct, perseverance and understanding of cinematic scale that seemed to typify the best work of Salkind.
He liked to see himself as the last of a dying breed, a great international independent film producer, a regrettably small coterie that would include Alexander Korda and Sam Spiegel, Jewish refugees who cared more about movies than about the money needed to make them.

Indeed, like these two giants, Salkind rarely had any personal funds, living well from budgets raised and the fees he paid himself. Like those two, Salkind respected talent, and was generous (sometimes over-generous) in paying for it: Marlon Brando’s salary for playing Superman’s real father was $3m for just 13 days work, although Brando himself showed his own generosity towards the Salkinds by granting an extra day of re-shooting without demanding more money. However, when Salkind wanted to use Brando footage in Superman II, Marlon nicked the idea totally. Mario (The Godfather) Puzo was paid $350,000 plus 5 per cent of the gross to develop the Superman comic strip into the film, and playing villain Lex Luthor enabled Gene Hackman to pocket $3m. Salkind knew how, and more importantly, where, to spend money. In Britain, both Pinewood and Twickenham studios have reason to be grateful to the Salkinds.Alexander Salkind was the son of the noted film executive Michael Salkind, and spent his early years in Britain while his father dallied on movies with Garbo and Dietrich. Alex was actually born in Danzig, Germany (which became Gdansk, Poland), and retained an indeterminate accent throughout his life.

He was educated in Berlin, but that soon became impossible for anyone of Russian-Jewish descent, and the Salkinds decamped to Latin America, where Alex followed his father into international co-production making his debut as a producer by packaging Il Moderno Barba Azul (“A Modern Bluebeard”) in 1945, starring an unfortunate Buster Keaton, now on his uppers. In Mexico, Alexander Salkind found his wife, the flamboyant and eccentrically creative Berta Dominguez D, who would collaborate on the screenplays of his future productions, and in 1947, she gave birth to a son, Ilya, who Alex would train up to be his own producer. After a protracted stay in both Cuba and Mexico, the Salkinds (as the industry came to know them) returned to Europe. Alex wheeled and dealed, and raised enough money in Paris to make two notable movies with two of the world’s greatest directors, Orson Welles’s The Trial (1962) and Abel Gance’s Austerlitz (1959), both shown internationally in English, thus beginning a somewhat disturbing trend for commercial international casting and casual disregard for lip- synchronisation, but clearly establishing an early reputation for selecting both talent and subjects, not to mention a shrewd sense of potential commercial screen afterlife. For Alexander Salkind the world was small: he made movies in London (Ballad In Blue, 1965, starring Ray Charles, directed by Paul Henreid), Mexico (Horst Buchholz in Cervantes, 1967), and in Spain (Light at the Edge of the World, teaming Kirk Douglas and Yul Brynner, 1971), but was still himself living on the financial edge. These films weren’t good, nor were they particularly successful Indeed, Cervantes, in particular, was a catastrophe.

Net loans charged off during thequarter ended March 31, 2009 were $2.2 million, a decline of 65 percent from thelevel of net loans charged off in the prior quarter ended Dec 31, 2008. Noninterest expense for the three months ended March 31, 2009 was $4.3million, down by $0.3 from the fourth quarter of 2008 on lower levels of loancollection related costs. The rise in net interest income reflects an improvement in the company’s netinterest margin, reversing a trend of compression experienced over the priorfour consecutive quarters, and comes despite the downward pressure from theincreased level of nonaccrual loans.Net interest margin for the quarter ended March 31, 2009, was 2.21 percent, anincrease of 19 basis points over the 2.02 percent recorded during the fourthquarter of 2008. Whilestill an unacceptably high level of loan charge-offs, the company is encouragedby the large reduction.Nonaccrual loans as a percentage of total loans at March 31, 2009, were 7.97percent, compared to 5.98 percent at the end of the previous quarter The rateof increase declined quarter over quarter. The rate of increase wasapproximately one-third that of the lowest rate recorded in each of the priorthree quarter over quarter periods.

Other real estate owned at March 31, 2009declined slightly to $5.4 million, compared to $5.8 million at Dec. 31, 2008.”The consecutive quarter decline in charge-offs and other real estate owned, andthe declining rate of increase in nonaccrual loans during the first quarter of2009 are possible indicators that the slump in the real estate and housingmarkets is beginning to bottom out,” said Sanchez. This represents a near doubling ofthe $122.0 million in loans originated for sale in the secondary market duringthe fourth quarter of 2008.”After generating organic growth of more than eight percent in our portfolioloans during 2008, we expanded our efforts to originate residential real estateloans for sale in the secondary market in the first quarter of 2009, nearlydoubling our funding levels from the prior quarter,” said Sanchez. “We feel thatwe can best serve the credit needs of our markets during this current financialcrisis by continuing to emphasize wholesale residential mortgage loanoriginations, especially as we continue to leverage our proceeds from theTreasury Department’s TARP program.”The company increased the allowance for loan losses to $5.6 million at March 31,2009, or 1.83 percent of loans outstanding, from $4.8 million, or 1.59 percentof loans outstanding, at the end of 2008. This portfolio shrinkage was morethan offset by growth in residential real estate loans, which totaled $107.2million at March 31, 2009, an increase of $3.6 million, or 3.5 percent, duringthe first quarter. These loans were funded through the company’s wholesale mortgage bankingdivision, which in the first quarter of 2009 originated approximately $236.0million in loans available for sale in the secondary market, utilizing aconservative, low-risk loan product strategy.

Though Mr Freeman complied, the solicitor contacted him again to demand he remove a “hyperlink” to another site with the report, also on the basis of copyright. The solicitor’s letter said the hyperlink to a site in the US “is still publication” and would constitute breach of copyright.Nottinghamshire County Council declined to comment yesterday on its reasons for suppressing the report’s publication or its decision to describe hyperlinks as copyrightable. One source there said the council was anxious that the children involved in the Broxtowe case, now in their teens, should not suffer through having their past raked over in public.. Two teenage girls sent to a detention centre for three months yesterday for their part in a savage gang attack on a schoolmate who later killed herself, were last night travelling to Scotland’s only women’s prison. The report was originally intended for dissemination among social workers and police who might learn from its lessons. Mr Kelman said: “If they win that point then it means the collapse of the Net – the whole thing depends on links.”The three journalists, Nick Anning, David Hebditch and Margaret Jervis, put the content of the Joint Enquiry Team (JET) report into the 1988 Broxtowe Case on to a British site on the World Web at the end of last month Under the injunction, the text was removed on 3 June. “If the JET report had been made more widely available to social workers and police in 1990, would these cases have been handled differently?” they asked.Besides contacting the British site, the Nottinghamshire county solicitor has e-mailed Jeremy Freeman, owner of a Canadian Web site carrying the text of the report, demanding he remove it.

A number of those led to children being removed from their parents and being taken into care. The council subsequently decided not to publish it, though the social workers involved were free to put their own views through the media and in public meetings. In an earlier commentary on the report, the three journalists noted the number of alleged “satanic abuse” cases which cropped up in the UK after the report had been written. The injunction will be challenged in the High Court on 23 June. The JET report investigated the handling of satanic ritual abuse claims against children, and concluded that social workers had been too prepared to believe children over police. One conclusion comments: “The use of satanic indicators, which appeared so convincing, was disastrous”. In a move which has surprised experts, it has even claimed that “hyperlinks”, electronic pointers to other sites on the Web, can breach copyright. Hyperlinks are a standard tool connecting the millions of pages of data on the Web, often pointing between competing companies.

After all, the network was designed to withstand a nuclear attack; it can probably survive Nottinghamshire County Council.”The council is trying, though. Such “mirroring” is common among users of the Net to prevent the banning of material; a page can be copied and loaded onto a computer in moments, establishing a new presence.Alistair Kelman, a British lawyer specialising in electronic copyright law, said last night: “Once something’s been published on the Net, that’s it It’s out there. A county council is struggling to prevent the rapid spread on the Internet of a leaked report which strongly criticises its handling of allegations of satanic abuse of children in the 1980s. Nottinghamshire County Council has already served injunctions against four people, including a co-author of the 30,000-word report and three journalists, preventing them from reproducing or disseminating the report, claiming they are breaching copyright.
But yesterday at least six computers in four countries on the global computer network were carrying the full text of the report, which is highly critical of social workers in the county. As an international study confirmed British pupils’ poor performance in the basics compared with competitor countries, ministers also announced schools would be urged to adopt more structured ways of teaching maths.
Schools minister Estelle Morris yesterday called for urgent action to address poor literacy and numeracy in primary schools and asked curriculum experts to advise schools on how to give a “sharper focus” to the three Rs.

David Blunkett yesterday revealed his long-cherished plan to introduce mandatory nutritional standards for schools meals and then went off to meet children who eat chips with everything.

The Secretary of State for Education outlined his plans for “well-balanced meals” at the opening session of the Unison public service union annual conference in Brighton, and then encountered the reality of children’s’ diets when he went for lunch at Blatchington Mill comprehensive school at nearby Hove.
Mr Blunkett, a Unison member, said he was not declaring war on chips – one of his sons was a “chip fanatic” – but on constant junk food.He told 2,500 Unison delegates: “For nearly 18 years we have seen the quality of school dinners deteriorate and the number of children eating them drop significantly. In Norway, for instance, children do no start school until they are seven and in some countries a significant proportion of less able nine-year-olds is kept down.Estelle Morris, the school standards minister, said: “This survey shows only too clearly how much we have to do to raise standards in maths. It needs to be a decent meal, not junk.”"I do not want to declare war on chips, but on average our school children eat chips three times a week and we need to make sure that alternatives are also made attractive.”During the visit to the 1,500-pupil Blatchington Mill School, headteacher Neil Hunter was asked about his pupils’ preferences “Chips are very popular,” he replied. “For some, a school dinner is the only real meal a child gets in the day. If you are hungry and have a poor diet it is difficult to concentrate and to learn effectively.” Mr Blunkett said last year only 43 per cent of children took school meals compared with 64 per cent in 1979. Yet a balanced diet is crucial to their health and wellbeing.
