I know that Team USA is trying to find role players such as Mike Miller, Michael Redd, and Tyson Chandler from the 2007 team. But, seriously, those aren’t your typical “role players.” Each of them and almost everyone else on the candidate’s list are all stars in each of their NBA teams Well, everyone but Luke Ridnour and JJ Redick. I didn’t pick Ridnour to be on this team because the team already has three superstar point guards in Kidd, Paul, and Williams. And, I also didn’t pick Redick because he…well…he just sucks. Now, if the USA team wants to return to its glory days of 1992, they should put on a player like Adam Morrison. Put a real role player on the team. An all star might say he will take a role position, but we all know inside he thinks he’s the best Sometimes too much talent might backfire.

I’m going to start where I usually finish at these events and talk about apathy and what I think is happening within television at the moment, which has a role to play within apathy. I do think it is something that we all need to consider.Television audiences, as we all know, are fragmenting. And I think that’s a good thing there’s more variety, there’s more choice. What that means, from television’s point of view, is that you can have more election than you ever wanted if you watch Sky News or BBC24, let alone get into the online or “active” options. On the other hand, it also means that there has been a corresponding effect whereby the amount of election coverage on the mainstream terrestrial channels has diminished.
I think we are in a society where people, if they don’t wish to participate passively by viewing the political process, can get out of that. To a certain extent, that is good news for a channel such as Sky News, because we are an opt-in channel and we would expect, and indeed we did record, modest increases in our average audiences for this time of year.
This was during the election campaign, and there was a significant boost on election night.But, of course, the people who watch our channel are people who choose to watch news. You have to look at what’s happening on the terrestrial channels. Why didn’t people watch the election? Partly because, when David Dimbleby was doing his Question Time session on the BBC with William Hague and Tony Blair, ITV scheduled actively against them with a football final involving Liverpool and the soap opera awards. So, bizarrely, Cherie Blair giving out an award got something like four times the audience of her husband on Question Time.I also feel that in a fragmented television market, all of us who think that TV news is important need to make more of a common cause in terms of staging events and coverage of events There are very few genuine exclusives. We at Sky News would appeal to our colleagues in ITV and Channel 4 and, indeed, the BBC, to work openly together to establish a non-branded debate with a committee so that an event will be staged that we will all have access to, but will not fall subject to inter-station competition.
I think there is a unique opportunity to pursue that with the appointment of Sam Younger and the Electoral Commission.This is probably the last time we are going to see a campaign of this sort. This is the last time we are going to see leaders dashing around the country making stump speeches What has killed it is live television capacity. We on Sky were doing upwards of 20 live locations in a day, following the leaders around. And that meant that the traditional origin of a whistle-stop tour, that you basically went around with the same message, effectively became redundant, because on TV you could see them saying it over and over again They were also gathering remarkably small crowds. In fact, all reports from the road suggest that on a large number of occasions there were many more activists present around the leaders than there were punters. It wasn’t often the case that the general public actually wasn’t there just that they generally didn’t appear interested in seeing something that they’d already seen covered extensively on television.Also, with great respect and due reverence for their viewing figures, I think that the era of elections being fought on the nightly news bulletins, the Ten O’Clock News, is over.

The underlying problem is that to write the sort of tunes that register with average ears means writing diatonically – in a language which, however fondly we might feel for it, is not the language Of Our Time. Malcolm Arnold’s tuneful scores accordingly sound older than they are, and they’ve been doing it for 50 years But don’t dismiss them just for that. They’re usually well-written, with insider knowledge of the orchestra, and some (not all) are powerful works. My one objection was that Ms McFadden’s diction was too poor and the auditorium lighting too low to follow the words in any way – and, for once, the textural weight of Birtwistle’s writing was light enough to suggest that he did want the words to register. But given the impenetrability of the poet, we may not have been missing so much there.People who boo Birtwistle tend to like Malcolm Arnold, whose 75th birthday was observed, some months in advance, with a Barbican concert by the LSO last Sunday. Arnold is that relic of a former age, a tunesmith – you can whistle him – and tunes prompt what is probably the great hypocrisy of modern music: we all want them but we disallow them on the grounds of aural health, as though they were a cream-cake for the ear.
Birtwistle likes to say that what interests him in theatre is where the characters are introduced, and that from then on, there’s a risk of boredom. Pulse Shadows is nothing but the introduction of characters; and with such superb interpreters as the Arditti Quartet (the undoubted leaders in the field of avant-garde quartet performance), the mixed- instrument ensemble Capricorn, and the soprano Claron McFadden, it certainly wasn’t boring. The writing is keen, economical, an antidote to the excess of recent scores like Panic, but with no rationing of ideas. It’s all exposition, endlessly inventing new material, rather than developing what has already been established. Anyone familiar with Birtwistle’s work will know his fascination with the dramatic possibilities of fragmentary statements, and Pulse Shadows is one of the most eloquent of all his essays in the subject. The analogy is with the sort of broken artefact you’d find at the Parthenon: a linear unfolding of ideas and images with sections obviously missing.
And in structural terms it echoes the way Birtwistle reads the poems in the parallel song sequence. They are all by Paul Celan, the Romantic Expressionist poet whose evocative but unfathomable verse does indeed read like narratives with missing segments Fragments of a hidden whole. Not that it sounds like Dowland, but the connection is there, and felt.
The most interesting thing about the quartet-writing, though (and it’s worth saying that Birtwistle has no real track record in the genre, although quartets do feature in Secret Theatre and his In Memoriam Stravinsky), is that some of the movements come in the form of what he calls a “frieze”. And even though the language of the writing differs, the ensemble music comes close to a conventional accompaniment: pliant, supportive. The quartet music is more assertive, with a contrapuntal vigour rooted in the old English renaissance tradition of the consort of viols. In talking about it, Birtwistle says there can’t be a relationship between the songs and the quartet movements, because their respective sequences are random: when it came to fixing a performance order for the premiere he just “shuffled the pack” But I’m not sure how much I believe that.
