Well, there isn’t really anyone to match his comic exuberance, but the jokes now are given more as an ensemble effort, and how good it was to see David Bintley’s company celebrating the centenary of their founder, Dame Ninette, by presenting such a lively, funny, unhackneyed piece, with a story which proved that in the 18th century dancers got up to just as many lively tricks as they do today.My best new piece also had a female choreographer, Siobhan Davies, who never offers anything so old-fashioned as a story, but does make beautiful dances for her beautiful dancers.
Did Petrucciani really hammer away at just one note of the keyboard for a full 10 minutes, as his finger became a cartoon blur of motion-lines, like Woody Woodpecker’s beak? Did he then repeat a single bluesy phrase for another 10 minutes, using not one finger but two? And if so, why did we like it so much?It was once said of a boogie-woogie pianist that he had a left hand like God; Petrucciani has two of them, and maybe another up his sleeve.After the encores, Petrucciani came to the front to hold hands with his bassist Anthony Jackson and his drummer Steve Gadd, his tiny figure reaching somewhere beneath their knees and their thighs.We did not so much as applaud as bend low and bow inobeisance, for the performance was like a glimpse into the infinite. You could almost see Earl Hines, Art Tatum, Phineas Newborn and all the other great jazz piano magicians of the past, standing at the bar looking on and sipping their pints, saying, “Go on my son!” Even the fixtures and fittings in the Market Hall appeared to be expanding and contracting in time to the indeterminate rhythmic bounce of that mercurial swing-thing.Perhaps this was hallucination, but then much of the concert sounds distinctly unlikely. At the Brecon Jazz Festival in August, the diminutive French pianist Michel Petrucciani (he has a rare bone disease that has restricted his growth), swung so ceaselessly, so heroically and so mercilessly, that by the end of the performance no one could quite believe what they had seen or heard.
It was less like a concert than a seance or a laying-on of hands, and Petrucciani truly did seem to bring the dead back to life. AS MISSION statements, manifestos or corporate credos go, “It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing”, might lack a little in gravitas, but nine times out of ten it still does the business where jazz is concerned. George Michael was arrested in Beverly Hills, while back home Ian Brown and Mark Morrison – surely the stupidest men in pop – both found themselves languishing at Her Majesty’s pleasure for ego-related obnoxiousness.Still, at least they managed to get themselves arrested, something few other British acts managed in the sorriest year for pop since Waterman first met Stock and Aitken.. One glimmer of hope was provided by Gomez’s winning of the Mercury Music Prize, a reflection of the band’s imaginative, eclectic approach and a promising indication of a shift back towards American influences after years of Britpop navel-gazing.This shift was entirely appropriate, given that 1998 was the year American pop finally dragged itself out of its own protracted slump, by rediscovering the power of its old roots music.

THE NEW Poet Laureate, Andrew Motion, who promised to make the post “more political”, did just that on his first day yesterday, blaming the Government for controversially leaking his appointment. “I think it must have been Downing Street,” he said, “though I can’t see what’s in it for them Truly, I didn’t leak it.
We had the announcement all set up for next week.”
Speaking from Sydney, where he is attending a festival, Mr Motion said: “I was worried that Downing Street might leak news of the appointment. When I was told I was Poet Laureate and asked not to say anything, I did say, `You can trust me, but can I trust you?’”Inquiries suggest that the original leak did come from Downing Street. Officials at Number 10 may have been over-enthusiastic to show that in choosing Mr Motion, Mr Blair was not wedded to the idea of a “people’s laureate”, an accusation of trendiness for its own sake that had angered the Prime Minister.Newspaper reports of the appointment seem to bear out the accusations of government involvement: nearly all were by lobby correspondents.Yesterday the shadow Culture minister, Peter Ainsworth, said: “The leak was deeply insulting to the royal palace. It could only have come from Number 10 or the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
I think it is despicable.”Despite the leak, Mr Motion appears to be looking forward to discharging his new duties. NEW STRAINS emerged within Nato yesterday over the air war in Yugoslavia as the alliance said it would consider an Italian plan for a pause in the bombing. At the same time Nato was embarrassed again when an alliance jet blasted a hospital in Belgrade, killing four people The Swedish ambassador’s residence was also damaged. The blunder followed earlier accidental strikes on the Chinese embassy, a railway train and a refugee column in Kosovo.
Italy’s call for a pause in the air war would constitute a change of strategy. But the proposal by Massimo D’Alema, the Prime Minister, was welcomed by Javier Solana, Nato’s secretary-general, who said it was “not in contradiction with the position we have taken”.Mr D’Alema also attacked calls for ground troops to go in as “a totally useless exercise”. Some took this as a coded swipe at Tony Blair, Nato’s most hawkish proponent of a land campaign in Kosovo.Britain and the US are expected to oppose fiercely any plan for a pause in the air war, fearing Slobodan Milosevic will use the breathing space to regroup his troops in Kosovo.Until now the alliance has insisted that a halt to bombing can only take place after Serbia has withdrawn its police and troops from the mostly Albanian province.The Italian premier outlined his plan in Brussels.
The air bombardment would stop once the draft text of a UN resolution was agreed. During a visit to Nato headquarters he argued that a bombing pause could begin “at the moment we have an agreement” for the draft UN resolution with Russia and China.The Italian plan was expected to dominate discussions last night in London between Mr Solana and Mr Blair and the Secretary of State for Defence, George Robertson.While Italy and Germany are pushing hard for a halt to the Balkan war, Britain and the US moved yesterday to paper over reported differences in the approach to Belgrade. As the Foreign Secretary, Robin Cook, travelled to Washington for a show of Anglo-American solidarity on the air war, President Bill Clinton insisted US resolve was not wavering. “We will continue our military campaign until the [five Nato] conditions are met. I believe the campaign is working,” he said.Mr Clinton said signs of dissent within Serbia are beginning to mount, and cited reports of desertions by hundreds of Serbian soldiers and protests in the central Serbian town of Krusevac.There were no further reports of anti-war protests in Serbia yesterday.
But in a disturbing sign that internal repression is deepening, the government of Montenegro – Serbia’s junior partner in the Yugoslav federation – said the army had sealed off the republic from the world, taking control of all border points and pouring in troops. The liberal government of Montenegro has long feared it will be overthrown by Mr Milosevic.. THE GOVERNMENT will try to reassure the public today that genetically modified food and crops are safe after a day of confusion over its own policy on the technology. Ministers will try to regain the initiative after The Independent’s report yesterday that the Chief Scientific Adviser had called for a four- year ban on the release of GM crops.
Their problems were compounded yesterday when the European Commission announced a freeze on licences for modified plants after research showing that GM pollen can kill Monarch butterflies.Jack Cunningham, the Minister for the Cabinet Office, is expected to announce a tougher regulatory framework when he presents the results of a review of GM policy. However, he will leave open the possibility of “limited” commercial release of crops well before the end of a four- year programme of farm trials.The Tories and the Liberal Democrats seized on comments by Sir Robert May, the Government’s most senior scientist, that ministers could not contemplate agreeing to the commercial release of some crops before 2003 at the earliest.
What’s more, while everything looks to be business as usual, Small Time Crooks has got some big-time sponsors: it emerges, grandly, under the auspices of Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks studio. It seems that commercial pressure gets to even the greatest. Following two decades of steady output – a film every year, without fail – Woody Allen has a new movie out within six months of his last, Sweet and Lowdown. Perhaps with rising costs and dwindling audiences he has decided (or has been advised) to step up his already conscientious work rate. What’s more, while everything looks to be business as usual, Small Time Crooks has got some big-time sponsors: it emerges, grandly, under the auspices of Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks studio.
I wonder if this major-league clout explains the rather play-safe nature of Allen’s latest offering. For one thing, it transports him way back to the time of those “early, funny” pictures he once affected to despise; Small Time Crooks has more in common with the slapstick comedy of his debut Take The Money and Run (1969) than with the pungent domestic dramas of Husbands and Wives and Deconstructing Harry. For another, he casts himself in a more ingratiating role – as a one-time convict and full-time criminal bungler – than his trademark intellectual malcontents and whiners.
Was it a deliberate move on his part to steer clear of anything that might possibly offend his new distributors?He doesn’t seem to have exercised the same consideration towards his fans. The first sight we get of Allen in this movie he’s wearing a regrettable pair of denim shorts, and later will spring even nastier sartorial horrors on us (Check the tuxedo with gold-trimmed lapels). He plays Ray Winkler, an ex-con who’s always devising get-rich-quick schemes which his manicurist wife, Frenchy (Tracey Ullman), wearily dismisses. “I’m going up on the roof,” he says sulkily after their latest argument. “Don’t jump,” she replies, “you’re too valuable as a dishwasher.” Eventually Ray persuades her to front a cookie store while he and his nefarious companions – Michael Rapaport, Tony Darrow and Jon Lovitz – toil away in the basement digging a tunnel into the bank along the street. As Ray boasts, he was known as “the Brain” in prison, and is put out when Darrow quietly informs him, “Ray, they were being sarcastic.” What with bursting a water main and reading their map upside down, the bank job is added to the list of Ray’s miserable failures.Frenchy’s baking, on the other hand, is a hit.
Her cookies are soon selling like, well, hot cakes, and in next to no time she and Ray are operating a nationwide franchise. Their new-found wealth buys them a fancy uptown apartment, which Frenchy transforms into a nouveau riche temple of gold and leopardskin. But she isn’t content merely to take the money and run – “We got no class,” she laments to Ray, and applies to an English toff, David (Hugh Grant) for a crash course in cultural development. The spirit of Judy Holliday and Born Yesterday is at work here, and Allen slips some light comedy through the gap between aspiration and actuality. While Frenchy is eagerly scrambling up the social ladder, Ray hasn’t taken to their “hoity-toity” lifestyle one bit.
She wants to eat pheasant and snails, he wants a cheeseburger. As a Strauss waltz booms away, he winces: “Can we change the music? I feel like I should be wearing a wig.” He prefers the old life of poker, take-out Chinese and late-night screenings of White Heat, and he finds an unlikely companion for it in Frenchy’s toweringly dim cousin (an inspired Elaine May).The film crackles in this middle section, even if there’s a whiff of condescension in Allen’s take on his arriviste couple. Sometimes it’s very funny, as when David points out Henry James’s former residence “Who?” asks Ray “The band leader, stupid,” snaps Frenchy In other ways, it feels mightily false. Allen never convinces as a blue-collar New Jersey crook, and the kvetching tone he uses with his wife leads him into some bizarre locutions: “I’m gonna slam your head off,” he warns Frenchy, who happily ignores him. Ullman is more comfortable in her part, though she too is rather betrayed by a galumphing (and unconvincing) display of vulgarity when she takes a call on her cellphone amid the hush of a Venetian chapel.It’s odd, because Allen is usually such an acute observer of boorishness: I still smile to think of Sean Penn’s wonderful turn in Sweet and Lowdown as the bumptious jazz guitarist – a classic Portrait of the Artist as a Rat. Penn’s performance was funny, but it was also moving, because the script allowed him to suggest a whole lifetime of neglect and self-loathing. Here, even allowing for the lighter tone, we get no sense of Frenchy and Ray having an inner life, or even a life previous to the story.Even the old standbys of slapstick look shaky.
In a later sequence of the film Ray turns up at an old-money soirée intending to steal a necklace from an upstairs safe. His efforts to ascend the staircase unnoticed are foiled three times, and each time it’s a little bit more laboured than the last. Farce needs to fly by to be effective; this practically hobbles. It also suffers from perhaps the weakest ending to any Woody Allen movie I’ve seen, a hurried bit of business that suggests either he ran out of time or else lost interest and wanted to wrap it up fast.So it’s a disappointment, but that’s no reason to despair.

People facing sex abuse charges should not be named publicly unless they are convicted, a coroner said yesterday at an inquest into the death of a headteacher accused of a sex offence who killed himself, fearing his career was ruined. He married, for the second time, to a Jewish woman and they have four children.The jury heard that he had been part of a small community of Sephardic Jewish immigrants from north Africa in the Hendon area and that he had donated to local Jewish charities and causes. His application was eventually approved by rabbis in New York in 1990. He had developed a strong interest in Judaism and after studying the faith for many years had applied to the London Beth Din to be converted in 1988 He was turned down, said Mr Freedman.
Contact with the opposite sex outside marriage was restricted to the extent that for some even touching hands in a social context was not allowed.Such allegations against Mr Maccaba would have been devastating for him, particularly when made by a rabbi who wielded great influence and power among the community.”Some people would assume that a judge would not make such allegations unless he was satisfied they were true and had been fully investigated,” said Mr Freedman.Mr Maccaba, the court heard, had been brought up as a Catholic in Dublin and was a graduate of University College, Dublin, and the London School of Economics. Such allegations, said Mr Freedman, were “absolutely without substance”.The rabbi, he went on, had also claimed that Mr Maccaba was behaving inappropriately towards women and that in particular he had sexually harassed a woman called Nathalie Attar These were also untrue, he said. “They are disturbed fabrications that say more about their author than Brian Maccaba. They simply do not stand up, they are nonsense.”The jury was told that strict observance of the sabbath and adherence to kosher dietary laws were paramount in orthodox communities. These allegations had been made to other rabbis and to leaders and members of the community, and there were “dark whisperings in dark corners” not made to Mr Maccaba personally.In particular Rabbi Lichtenstein had told another rabbi that his [the rabbi's] recently married daughter was at the top of the list of women kept by Mr Maccaba for the purposes of preying on them.
Mr Maccaba, he said, had become close to leading figures in the community and Rabbi Lichtenstein hoped to displace them and create a power vacuum into which he could step.In January 2001, Mr Freedman said, the rabbi had begun “peddling allegations” that Mr Maccaba was a serial adulterer of young, newly married orthodox women. A millionaire Jewish businessman was accused of adultery and being a sexual pre- dator in a campaign of slander by a leading rabbinical judge, a court was told yesterday.
Brian Maccaba, 45, was accused by Rabbi Yaakav Lichtenstein of serially preying on newly married young women among the tightly knit orthodox communities of north London, his barrister, Clive Freedman, told the High Court.Such “character assassination” would have been devastating for anybody, but for a member of the orthodox Jewish faith could have led to him being thrown out of his community and synagogue and ostracised by society, said Mr Freedman. The case, which is being heard in front of a jury, is expected to last several weeks.Rabbi Lichtenstein, said Mr Freedman, was a senior judge in the Beth Din, the religious court and body which ruled on such matters as divorce and conversion to the faith as well as commercial disputes and matters of religious law.Mr Freedman said the judge had embarked on his campaign to discredit Mr Maccaba among the community of Sephardic Jews in which he lived and worshipped in Hendon. The Murdoch press was “building a boil” and the Prime Minister had taken a decision to “lance it”, he said.A Downing Street source said Irwin Stelzer, a close associate of Mr Murdoch, had made clear at a recent meeting with Mr Blair that The Sun and The Times would not support Labour at the next general election unless he promised a referendum.
“A deal was done,” the source said.The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said Mr Blair had not talked to Mr Murdoch recently about the issue but confirmed that he talked to Mr Stelzer on a regular basis, just as he spoke to many other figures in the media.Michael Howard, the Conservative leader, said Mr Blair had “at last seen sense” on a referendum. He ridiculed the Prime Minister’s declaration that he had no “reverse gear”, saying: “Today we could hear the gears grinding as he came before us once again, lips quivering Who will ever trust him again?”. Nothing is changing on either of these fronts,” he told BBC Radio.He said Rupert Murdoch’s newspapers had influenced the decision to hold a referendum “substantially” because their representatives made it clear that they were intent on “continuing to distort” Britain’s relationship with the EU. Although Spain is ready to compromise in a row over voting power which prevented agreement last December, Mr Blair suggested that Poland might not follow suit.Explaining his about-turn, Mr Blair conceded that Eurosceptics had been partially successful in spreading “myths” about Europe to persuade people that the EU was a conspiracy aimed at Britain. “It is right to confront this campaign head on,” he said.Mr Blair continued: “It is time to resolve once and for all whether this country, Britain, wants to be at the centre and heart of European decision-making or not, time to decide whether our destiny lies as a leading partner and ally in Europe or on its margins ….
