THE VALUE of organic consumables sold in the UK has increased sixfold in a decade, and is expected to be worth pounds 500m by next year. Wine makes up an insignificant portion of that figure, and I’m not surprised It takes a lot of determination to go certifiably organic. You have to make the transition gradually, and end up in complete conformance with the labelling laws and certification standards that apply where you (a) make and (b) sell your wines.
If you disagree with the standards, and there are legitimate areas of disagreement, tough luck. I’m often asked what organic wine is, and whether it’s better than non- organic. The second question is easy: organic methods will not by themselves make better wine. Quality depends on skill in growing grapes and vinifying them; the job can be done well with chemical inputs It can also be done badly The first question is much more complex. An organic wine is any wine whose makers are allowed by law, and by the local certifying body, to call it by that name But EU laws differ from American laws. The winemaking countries of Europe have several organisations, each with different standards, that certify producers and (in theory) monitor their production. And some of the best producers using organic methods (such as Mas de Daumas Gassac in Herault and Domaine de Trevallon in Provence) operate outside certification systems.
It’s all a bit of a mess.
A good new book by Monty Waldin, The Organic Wine Guide (Thorsons, pounds 8.99), sets out to provide guidance for the organically perplexed. It’s genuinely useful, especially in explaining the basics and as a shopping guide. Waldin does not make extravagant claims: he sure as hell doesn’t think that all organic producers make good wine. And he elucidates the mysterious regimes of Biodynamics, an offshoot of organics that sounds like moonshine but produces some great wine. Or you might prefer to put your nine quid towards the cost of Jancis Robinson’s Oxford Companion to Wine (pounds 40), which has just been published in a new edition.
Matters of organicity are dealt with here in all their complexity, and with a well-informed scepticism that’s preferable to waving the green flag.If you’re serious about investigating the possibilities of organic wine, the best places to go are the mail order specialists Vintage Roots (0118 976 1999) and Vinceremos (0113 257 7545). But please remember that you’re not necessarily buying better quality. Think about the flavours in the glass, not just the residues.Here’s a small sampler of good organics to come my way recently. Majestic’s new list sticks a green triangle next to each organic wine, which go up to the outstanding Chassagne-Montrachets from Fontaine-Gagnard (from pounds 19- pounds 24). More affordably, their Sauvignon de Touraine 1998, Domaine des Maisons Brulees (pounds 4.99) is a grassy quaffing wine of velvety texture. California’s Fetzer is the most widely distributed of organic wineries, and their Bonterra Viognier 1998, North Coast (pounds 9.99, Oddbins) is a complex, peachily appetising example of the grape.
All their wines are good, especially the Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon.Even more worth it, but only if you store the bottle for a good few years, is Chateauneuf-du-Pape “La Bernardine” 1997, Chapoutier (pounds 17.95, Waitrose). There’s some discussion about how closely this inconsistent house adheres to organic principles, but who cares? This wine’s massive, closed, exceptional – expensive but not overpriced. Another five years should show what it’s really made of.I have to admit that the whole issue of organic wine seems a bit of a red herring. Do I want to drink wine that’s loaded with pesticide residues? Of course not.

A few years ago I noticed something strange. I would turn on the television and find strippers in pasties explaining how best to lap-dance a man to orgasm. I would flip the channel and see babes in tight, tiny uniforms bouncing up and down on trampolines. Britney Spears was becoming increasingly popular and increasingly unclothed, and her undulating body ultimately became so familiar to me I felt like we used to go out together.
The Soviet-led invasion on 21 August put an end to the Czechoslovak experiment with humane socialism.Mlynar was with the rest of the Czechoslovak leadership that was kidnapped by the invaders and whose members were forced to negotiate under duress in Moscow to give their qualified blessing to the Soviet military presence in the country. Dubcek had become the CPCz’s leader in January 1968, and within weeks Czechoslovakia was embarking on a new path which brought the end of censorship, the re- emergence of non-Communist organisations and the promise of far-reaching market-oriented economic reforms. The economic downturn in the early 1960s and the failure of Antonin Novotny, the long-standing CPCz leader, to follow the de-Stalinisation programmes of some of his Communist neighbours, had fuelled widespread discontent which, in turn, prompted growing demands for change within and outside the party.It was in these conditions that in 1967 Mlynar became head of an inter- disciplinary research team whose task was to work on the development of democracy in the Communist system. In the mid-1960s, as the long winter of Communist orthodoxy was beginning to be assailed by the first harbingers of the Prague Spring, Mlynar became a senior official in the CPCz’s legal affairs department. Between 1951 and 1955 he studied at the law faculty of Moscow’s Lomonosov University where he and Gorbachev became, in Mlynar’s words, “a pair of close friends”.A year after his return to Prague, Mlynar joined the Institute for State and Law of the Academy of Sciences. Their fate – and that of the Prague Spring – was sealed by the fact that the Czechoslovak reforms were being shaped at a time when the Soviet empire was reaching its most expansionist phase; and that the Kremlin’s incumbent at the time was not Mikhail Gorbachev but Leonid Brezhnev who had zero tolerance towards more liberal forms of Communism.
Born in Vysoke Myto, in eastern Bohemia, in 1930, Mlynar joined the CPCz at the age of 16 and worked for the party’s youth wing after secondary school.
As the top intellectual in the CPCz leadership, Mlynar was in many ways the brains behind the charismatic Dubcek. Mlynar was a close associate of Alexander Dubcek, the leader of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (CPCz), whose short-lived experiment to launch “socialism with a human face” was brought to an abrupt end by the Soviet- led military invasion in August 1968. Nearly 20 years before Mikhail Gorbachev embarked on his ambitious and ultimately unsuccessful attempt to reform the Soviet system, Zdenek Mlynar, one of his friends from his student days in Moscow, had tried to introduce similar policies when he was a member of the Czechoslovak Communist leadership that presided over the Prague Spring of 1968. But there was no doubting his conformity with Deakin’s ultra-right wing approach, especially so within the confederation of ship- building and engineering unions. From 1936 until his move to the secretaryship of the Labour Party he was employed in the full-time service of the TGWU and operated as a national officer from 1940 onwards in the road haulage, chemicals and engineering industries. But other factors beyond his control were the main cause, not least Ted Heath’s successful line of bringing prices down “at a stroke” and Harold Wilson’s lacklustre performance, plus the over-tight budget of Roy Jenkins.
