The floating island can be served as soon as the caramel has set, about 15 minutes after coating. Leave the cooked floating island to cool at room temp- erature in the basin or mould for 30 seconds before unmoulding.Using a tea towel to hold the mould, unmould the hot but not scalding floating island by inverting it a few centimetres above a round and shallow serving plate. Pour the chilled creme anglaise all round the floating island. In a small, heavy-based saucepan set over low heat, dissolve the sugar without water, stirring continuously with a wooden spatula until is turns to an attractive caramel colour. Spoon an even coating of warm caramel over the top of the dessert and refrigerate for 15 to 20 minutes. Using a bowl and whisk or an electric mixer, beat the egg whites until half- risen.

Add the sugar and continue to beat until very stiff and well-risen. Add the finely diced dates and pinch of star anise and whisk for just a few seconds more. Pour the meringue into the mould and then gently smooth the surface.Place on a baking sheet and cook in the warm oven for 20 minutes. Insert a fine metal skewer into the centre of the floating island to check whether it is cooked; the skewer should come out shiny and clean Cook for a few minutes more if necessary. Return the mixture to the pan and gently heat, stirring continuously, to 175F/80C, until the custard is just thick enough to coat the spoon Do not let it boil.

The average Labour lead over the past month of 18 points would be cut to 13 points. There has been some evidence from large random surveys that adjusted polls are still overstating Labour’s lead, perhaps by as much as five percentage points. And, even after all the agonising and adjusting in the number-crunching fraternity over the failure of the opinion polls last time, there remains scope for scepticism about their figures now. In fact, the gap between the parties has hardly changed for a whole year now: since last February the Tories have gained about three points, two from the Liberal Democrats, one from Labour.
However, the conventional wisdom is right in the sense that the disparity between Blair and Major does not feel as great as that between Thatcher and Foot She had just won a war, and the Labour Party was a shambles.

The Labour lead seems to have fallen since the turn of the year, but only because Gallup belatedly came into line with other pollsters, revamping its survey methods completely and adjusting its figures to take “reluctant Tories” into account. The economy may be improving, but it has been for some time and John Major’s ministers seem quite incapable of taking time out from July’s Conservative leadership contest to put on a facade of unity. The conventional wisdom is that Labour’s lead in the polls will narrow as polling day beckons There is no reason why it should. It’s so true.”During my record company years it was going on all around, lots of bonking on sofas and other extra-curricular activities But I never got involved in all that. When Richard Branson tried to throw me in the swimming pool, I simply glared at him and said, `No, Richard I’ve been to public school I’ve done all that, been there Don’t.’”.

“They would say to me, `Where’s your sense of humour?’ I said, `Evidently not in my cock.’ It’s like a club It’s all geared to going into a clan, into a posse And generally speaking women don’t do posse. Someone said that in the music biz either you are a babe or an ersatz boy, unless you’re over 35 in which case you’re an old dog. “Oh, yes, oh yes, oh yes”, affirmations delivered as a crescendo.Perhaps she was thinking of the sales conferences she had to attend preceded by the statutory soft porn videos. Mum tends to rave about the latest bands even before they do “It’s a bit of a problem for me. “Oh, come on,” she chortles, shaking her black curls, “how can you be elegant and a size 18? And I’m wearing a vest.”The vest can be put down to living in a 15th century Kent mansion with David Campbell, former manager of UB40, currently house-husband, and their children Hereward (“yes, he loves the name”) and Hannah. The children are deprived of only one adolescent prerequisite. Which is probably more than enough to frighten Michael Jackson.Actually, while she does harp on about her size rather, Anderson does not come across as big at all, more like the elegant but perky 45-year- old mother that she is. How did she deal with it? “I’m a big woman with an imposing voice,” she explains.

She switched the television contract from the BBC which didn’t pay, to independent television, which did, and had the brochure magazine sold in 2,500 shops.Last year’s Jarvis v Jackson spectacle was probably one of its greatest moments. When she was sacked after some internal politicking, the major record labels asked her to replace the ubiquitous Jonathan King and become executive producer of The Brits. After six years of Anderson, the Brits is now an internationally known brand name, the voting structure has been democratised, it brings in pounds 300,000 a year, compared with the pounds 10,000 it made in 1990, is televised across the UK and America, and is the rock event of the year. Anderson can take a lot of the credit for that success, yet outside the record industry she is almost unknown. She was the first woman to head a record company when she became managing director of RCA in 1989. They will also make pounds 300,000 profit for the Brit School for young musicians and be televised across Britain and America.

Nearly 4 months after the King of Pop’s death, his newest track is unveiled.

Yet in its own sublimely silly, rulebook-tearing fashion, the National Theatre performance of Brent’s Love Upon the Throne is a rapturous illustration of what he means. WHEN PETER BROOK made his classic statement that “theatre reopens what definition closes”, he probably wasn’t envisaging the spectacle of two men in suits pretending to be idiotic thespians pretending to be the Prince and Princess of Wales and everyone else associated with their ill-starred marriage. Snake Eyes thereafter turned into a nugatory join-the-dots thriller.. Who could follow that?On a much smaller scale, Brian de Palma ran into a similar difficulty with his conspiracy thriller Snake Eyes. The 20 minute Steadicam take that opens the film is an audacious and exhilarating demonstration of film craft, conducting the audience via a crooked cop (Nicolas Cage) right into the heart of fight night in Atlantic City.Cage holds the centre here as he orbits the fight arena, pocketing bribes, beating up a miscreant and generally wallowing in the glow of his own self-love.De Palma builds the sequence beautifully, wiring us into the frenzied expectation around the baying auditorium – it’s like lions-and-Christians night in Ancient Rome. Then comes what is my favourite movie moment this year as Cage gets to his feet with a triumphant yell of “I am the king!” On that instant the whole arena rises with him Glorious fun. In these moments Spielberg gestures towards an unglamorous truth about men in combat: that real bravery lies not in gun-toting heroics but in the sheer will to carry on.It’s no discredit to Spielberg that the rest of his film failed to match the gut-churning bravura. There is nowhere to hide in this open-air slaughterhouse. Then comes the moment when it all seems to freeze, and Captain Miller (played superbly by Tom Hanks) enters a kind of battle fugue, the thunder of the guns slowing and muffling around him: it’s a state of abstraction brought on by terror, which certain soldiers on the Western Front also recall after going over the top.Miller, whose dream-time has lasted no more than four or five seconds, forces himself back into the horrific present.

No sooner does the ramp on the foremost landing craft drop down than a chattering hail of machine-gun fire engulfs the oncoming marines.Spielberg gets up close to the impact of gunfire as bullets whistle through flesh, khaki, steel helmets. Film by Anthony Quinn

THERE WERE movies with great things in them this year, although not actually any great movies.
The most startling imagescame in the opening 25-minute flurry of Saving Private Ryan, Steven Spielberg’s account of the American D-Day landings at Omaha. This lets its female protagonist start on stage, accompanied by giant video projections of her face or hands before the cameraman pursues her into the street while the enthralled audience sits watching her image walk So vulnerable, so brave; such magic.. His choreography, taking classical ballet further into the next century than anyone else has attempted, was already admired here, thanks to the Royal Ballet, but for the greatest delight you need to see his regular dancers making its revolutionary innovations of shape, timing and texture look absolutely natural. And while London borrowed from Germany, the Edinburgh Festival borrowed three dance companies from Holland to celebrate the highly original Dutch choreographer Hans van Manen Best of all was the devastating originality of Live. Sometimes mysterious, sometimes jazzy, the outcome was so appealing I was drawnto see it again and again. The reopening of the new, vastly improved Sadler’s Wells Theatre brought joy to the autumn with a series of dance companies; among them William Forsythe’s amazing company from Frankfurt. She set it to Conlon Nancarrow’s highly individual music for player piano. She called this work Eighty- eight because that’s the year she started her company, and also because it is the number of keys on a piano.

Grown men cried, and you walked out into the hot evening sunshine and the beer-smelling streets with a vision of glory buzzing in your head, and that single Woody Woodpecker note ringing in your ears Honestly, it was that good.. SOMETHING OLD, something new, something borrowed – the reliable old formula worked again. Yes, I did see something blue too, but that was not a highlight of my year. The best of the old was Birmingham Royal Ballet’s revival of Ninette de Valois’s The Prospect Before Us, a huge hit during the Second World War but not performed for 50 years because everyone was afraid it would not work without its original star, the late, great Robert Helpmann.
Well, there isn’t really anyone to match his comic exuberance, but the jokes now are given more as an ensemble effort, and how good it was to see David Bintley’s company celebrating the centenary of their founder, Dame Ninette, by presenting such a lively, funny, unhackneyed piece, with a story which proved that in the 18th century dancers got up to just as many lively tricks as they do today. My best new piece also had a female choreographer, Siobhan Davies, who never offers anything so old-fashioned as a story, but does make beautiful dances for her beautiful dancers.

Did Petrucciani really hammer away at just one note of the keyboard for a full 10 minutes, as his finger became a cartoon blur of motion-lines, like Woody Woodpecker’s beak? Did he then repeat a single bluesy phrase for another 10 minutes, using not one finger but two? And if so, why did we like it so much?It was once said of a boogie-woogie pianist that he had a left hand like God; Petrucciani has two of them, and maybe another up his sleeve. After the encores, Petrucciani came to the front to hold hands with his bassist Anthony Jackson and his drummer Steve Gadd, his tiny figure reaching somewhere beneath their knees and their thighs. We did not so much as applaud as bend low and bow inobeisance, for the performance was like a glimpse into the infinite. You could almost see Earl Hines, Art Tatum, Phineas Newborn and all the other great jazz piano magicians of the past, standing at the bar looking on and sipping their pints, saying, “Go on my son!” Even the fixtures and fittings in the Market Hall appeared to be expanding and contracting in time to the indeterminate rhythmic bounce of that mercurial swing-thing.Perhaps this was hallucination, but then much of the concert sounds distinctly unlikely. At the Brecon Jazz Festival in August, the diminutive French pianist Michel Petrucciani (he has a rare bone disease that has restricted his growth), swung so ceaselessly, so heroically and so mercilessly, that by the end of the performance no one could quite believe what they had seen or heard.
It was less like a concert than a seance or a laying-on of hands, and Petrucciani truly did seem to bring the dead back to life. AS MISSION statements, manifestos or corporate credos go, “It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing”, might lack a little in gravitas, but nine times out of ten it still does the business where jazz is concerned. George Michael was arrested in Beverly Hills, while back home Ian Brown and Mark Morrison – surely the stupidest men in pop – both found themselves languishing at Her Majesty’s pleasure for ego-related obnoxiousness.Still, at least they managed to get themselves arrested, something few other British acts managed in the sorriest year for pop since Waterman first met Stock and Aitken.. One glimmer of hope was provided by Gomez’s winning of the Mercury Music Prize, a reflection of the band’s imaginative, eclectic approach and a promising indication of a shift back towards American influences after years of Britpop navel-gazing.This shift was entirely appropriate, given that 1998 was the year American pop finally dragged itself out of its own protracted slump, by rediscovering the power of its old roots music.

Highpoint One was the first successful tower block in England: and very few since have been as pleasant to look at and live in. “The best and healthiest site in the whole of London,” swooned the original Thirties sales pitch, “less than 30 minutes from the City and the West End.” Atop Highgate Hill, it has amazing views over the capital. Its designer was the pioneering Modernist architect Lubetkin, who also produced the penguin ramp at London Zoo.

The commission came from Sigmund Gestetner, who wanted homes for the staff of his office equipment factory in Tottenham, north London. Far from becoming a Modernist role model for low-cost housing, Highpoint was too pricey for the workers even before it came on the market in 1936. The middle classes took possession instead – including Lubetkin.

“The comprehensive schools in inner-city areas of London are very bad indeed, and are failing our children.” Thus said Bernie Grant, the left- wing Labour MP for Tottenham, north London, speaking from bitter experience. It must have been beyond Tony Blair’s wildest expectations that the one- time black radical would give such overwhelming backing to the choice made by Harriet Harman. The 51-year-old MP could not have been more uncompromising. He became an MP in 1970, serving as a member of the foreign affairs committee and chairing the parliamentary supervisors of the Bank of Finland. In the two years that preceded his move into politics in the mid-1960s he was a member of the Finnish delegation at the UN, a year after graduating from Helsinki University in 1962. He rose to prominence in politics as secretary general of the National Coalition Party in 1965, becoming chairman in 1971 until 1979. It is not so long ago that a poster campaign to sell a snooker tournament needed only two words: Hurricane Warning. Yesterday Alex Higgins went unbilled and barely applauded as he tried to breath life into a career that is not so much unconscious as resembling a corpse. A strong wind was still pulling in the punters from the prom on Blackpool’s North Shore but it was not the Hurricane that tempted them from the cold, rather Gail from Coronation Street and the theme attraction based on the television series.

Higgins’ struggles went almost unnoticed.

He was said to be selling the island, but in 1988 was reported to be living there with a Japanese lady, Yachio Tsubaki. In 1989 Cheyenne was injured in a jeep crash on the island, and Brando blamed the accident for her subsequent bouts of depression. If he could convince me to pay him and then release him he would.”John Malkovich, like most contemporary actors in thrall to Brando’s early talent, once observed that Brando simply liked to enjoy himself; he liked jokes, larking around; and that he shouldn’t be criticised for what he now did because he had achieved so much.Brando’s personal tragedies began in 1982 when his lawyer-agent, Norman Garey, who had presided over all his recent deals, shot himself; and when in 1983 Tetiaroa was struck by a hurricane, wiping out almost all his investment, he needed to work for those inflated sums. He felt similarly; Richard Donner, who directed Superman, reported: “I checked him out with various people and the one thing they all said was that Brando didn’t like to work. Despite the much-publicised troubles on Mutiny on the Bounty, he managed to retain control over most of the films in which he consented to appear. There were those willing to pay Brando’s huge fees for prestige purposes, for results as grotesque and overblown as his figure: Superman (1978), Apocalypse Now (1979), Christopher Columbus: The Discovery (1992) He was no longer to be savoured, but avoided.

Like the vast majority of men I’ve had several homosexual experiences and I’m not remotely ashamed of it.”The other consequence of the expedition to the South Seas was Brando’s purchase of the island of Tetiaroa, where he communed with the sea and the sky, emerging to make a series of mainly indifferent films. In her book Brando for Breakfast Kashfi claims that he was also courting the actresses France Nuyen and Rita Moreno.Cameron Mitchell, acting with him in Desire, recalled Brando announcing “I’m trisexual”. That became publicly known in 1983 when Brando told the French magazine Cine-Revue that he had “dabbled” in homosexuality: “For me sex is something you can’t describe If you like, let’s say sex has no sex. She charged Brando with mental cruelty in filing suit in August 1959, after legally separating in September the previous year. A son, Christian, had been born in May, named after the actor Christian Marquand whose relationship with Brando “displayed an affection towards each other that far overreached the usual expressions of friendship”.

Ever since Republicans seized control of Congress last November, a presidential veto has seemed inevitable. But, despite urgings from his supporters to draw a line against his opponents and re-assert his role in national policy-making, Mr Clinton has passed over every opportunity. The most recent was a broadcasting tax bill that contained a $30m (pounds 18m) loophole for the media magnate, Rupert Murdoch
As a result, Mr Clinton is the first president since the little remembered Millard Fillmore, in office between 1850 and 1853, never to have used the veto. The others relished the chance to flex their constitutional muscle, even when their own party controlled Congress.Democrats ruled Capitol Hill throughout the Depression and the Second World War. But that did not stop Mr Clinton’s political idol, Franklin Roosevelt, from vetoing 635 bills, roughly one a week throughout 12 years in office. By the same point in their terms, Jimmy Carter and George Bush had vetoed 19 and 21 bills. The Clinton record is a perfect zero, a performance only reinforcing the conventional Washington wisdom that the President is a soft touch who is scared of confrontation. That reputation may soon be given the lie.

Mr Clinton has warned that he will veto Republican bills that would roll back anti-gun legislation and make cuts in various education, housing and other programmes approved by the previous Democratic Congress. This week, mooted changes in welfare came under the veto threat. Now, foreign policy has joined the list. The legislation, contained in separate but similar bills before the House and Senate, would slash US foreign aid, merge or abolish foreign-policy agencies, and impose important changes in policy towards Russia, China, Cuba and North Korea. In a blistering attack this week, Mr Clinton described the proposals as a “frontal assault” on presidential authority, and as the “most isolationist” legislation produced by Congress in half a century. The House Bill, virtually certain of passage, is due to be voted on today, while the Senate measure, shepherded by Jesse Helms, is scheduled to come to the floor in June. In its present form, said the President, “I will veto it.”But he may yet not live up to his word. The “line-item veto” – the power that would allow a President to block parts of a bill which he otherwise favoured – is not yet law. Until it is, Republicans can be expected to sweeten the bills that Mr Clinton dislikes with provisions he can hardly turn down..

President Bill Clinton laughingly brushed off the scare as “just another day at the White House”. But for the jittery Secret Service whose job it is to protect him, the previously obscure Leland William Modjeski has become the latest symbol of how the President’s home is anything but invulnerable. Yesterday a full-scale investigation was under way into how the 37-year- old former pizza delivery driver, carrying a revolver, managed to scale a 10ft fence and enter the private grounds of the White House on Tuesday night, dashing to within 40 yards of the building where the President and his family live before being shot and captured. According to Secret Service spokesmen, a security guard spotted Mr Modjeski almost immediately after he had entered the compound and told him to stop. Mr Modjeski refused and scuffled with the guard, who either felt or saw the gun and shouted “weapon” to his colleagues. A second guard rushed to the scene and fired a single bullet which apparently hit both Mr Modjeski and the guard struggling to overpower him.
The intruder and the guard, both wounded in the arm, were said to be in a stable condition yesterday.
