Upscale chic There are four separate village areas to this resort, named by their altitudes of 1300, 1550, 1650 and 1850 metres, all linked by shuttle busservices and ski lifts. Because of its altitude, Val Thorens is a good choice for early and late-season travellers.

Cheap and cheerful The ugliest and the cheapest of the resorts in this area, it does provide close access to the less crowded and quite challenging slopesof La Masse.

As a result, the pistes can become very crowded when skiers from all three valleys converge. When the weather closes in, high winds can forceclosure of the lifts more frequently than elsewhere. It is a satellite resort at a higher altitude with better snow conditions and lift connections but very littleatmosphere once the lifts have closed down for the day.
VAL THORENS
Guaranteed snow Europe’s highest resort at 2,300 metres, it is the place to head for when snow conditions are getting too thin for comfort in the lowerresorts. Some of the bar staff return year after year and still seem unable to speak a word of French!

Caroline Glynn, author of the institute’s report, “Enabling Balance: the Importance of Organisational Culture”, published last month, said that organisations believed they had dealt with the balance problem by introducing “family-friendly” policies, such as part-time work, flexi-time and job shares. Terry Morgan, the company’s human resources director who attended the presentation of the survey findings, said he had become more interested in discovering individual employees’ needs.

Such organisations are starting to catch on, though.For instance, British Aerospace has responded to IIP’s challenge by, for instance, giving employees much greater access to learning. As Ruth Spellman, chief executive of IIP, said: “If you look after staff, motivating and developing them, then they will look after your business.”It is a point often made by companies that feature in the upper reaches of this newspaper’s annual survey of fastest-growing private concerns But it often eludes bigger and better-established companies. But then so did 45 per cent of those in firms without the standard.By contrast, 57 per cent of those in IIP companies felt real involvement with their business, compared with 3 per cent in companies without the standard. In addition, 39 per cent of those in IIP organisations agree with their businesses’ ambition or focus, while the figure was only 1 per cent for those in organisations without the standard.This is not rocket science. Yes, 67 per cent of employees in IIP companies rated rewards and pay well. But they are also interested in many softer things, such as involvement in decision- making and being trained and developed, both personally and for the benefit of the organisation.For the record, the “Satisfaction at Work” survey published on 3 March found that 94 per cent of workers in organisations which have achieved the Investors in People (IIP) standard said they liked their job, against only 37 per cent of those in other organisations.When you dig deeper, the importance of “soft” issues over monetary matters becomes apparent.

Sure they want a living wage, and they would like to see their pay rise. Time after time, surveys show that employees are motivated by more than money. There is, after all, evidence for the notion that those organisations in which significant numbers of employees have a “stake in the action” perform better.
However, it needs to be acknowledged that it is not only owning shares that puts employees in this position. Sharing in bonuses, particularly where individuals can see the effect of the performance of themselves or their team, can have the same effect But there does not even have to be money involved. The Government believes this factor could play an important role in engineering the much talked-about improvements in competitiveness. Tuesday’s Budget is expected to include more details of how the Chancellor, Gordon Brown, intends to bring about a huge increase in the number of people owning shares in the companies for which they work. A sense of job security has gone into free fall and this has hit people’s expectations: they want better training, opportunities for personal development, and are more quizzical about leadership within their organisation..

In another up-date report by ISR, published last month, which looks at British survey data only, the 1990s can clearly be seen as a decade of change. The complacency of Swiss workers may be related to their high degree of job security The converse may be true for Britain, and latterly Germany. Britain, as it has done since the first tracking trends survey was published five years ago, has maintained its place at the bottom of the ratings.The ISR’s report is frustrating because readers are left to interpret the results. Germany is somewhere in the middle but over the decade has been sliding downwards; particularly because of rising job insecurity. Poor communications, which attracts a more consistent level of complaint, reflects a feeling that companies do not keep employees informed.Generally, the Swiss, Norwegians, Danes, Austrians and Dutch have fewer grouses about conditions and relationships at work than the French, Spanish and Italians. Aspects of working life which attract the lowest levels of favourable response across Europe are communications (only 47 per cent favourable), benefits (46 per cent) and pay (41 per cent) The latter two indices vary considerably between countries.
