Willie Fullgear was shielded by police early Monday as about a dozen officers climbed into two large metal bins, searching for boxes filled with the statuettes.Police Capt. David Powers said early Monday that investigators checked with the academy and verified that the statues were at least some of the missing Oscars. Powers said a special mark showed them to be the true awards.Fifty-five Oscar statues intended for presentation at next Sunday’s award show vanished last week and were presumed stolen.Powers said he was unsure whether they would be returned in time for the show.”If it were just a matter of recovering the Oscars I’d say let’s open them up right now. But this is a theft, a criminal investigation and we have to proceed cautiously,” Powers said.Police had opened some boxes and placed about 12 of the gold-plated statuettes on the ground. They appeared to be in good condition.Fullgear said he found the statues about 9:30 p.m. Sunday still wrapped in plastic, padded with Styrofoam and in individual white boxes.
He filled the trunk of his car with the boxes and alerted CBS-TV and police.”I found a lot of white stuff out there which were a lot of Styrofoam boxes and I picked one up and busted it open – Oscar,” Fullgear told CBS TV.The bins were in a parking lot with a tall wrought iron fence topped with razor wire. The L-shaped lot served a coin-operated laundry, smog-check station and grocery store. It wasn’t clear when the trash bins were last emptied.Messages left before business hours at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences were not immediately returned to The Associated Press. The statues were reported missing March 10 from a Roadway Express Inc. loading dock in Bell, the Los Angeles-area community where 4,000 Oscar ballots were misplaced at a post office earlier this month. The ballots were eventually found, but the Academy had already printed new ones and extended the voting deadline by two days, to Thursday.. Columbus sighted the island on his second voyage in 1493 and named it after the statue of Santa Maria della Antigua in Seville cathedral. By the time a party of English settlers landed in 1632, the original inhabitants, the Carib Indians, had vanished. Soon plantations were established, first tobacco, then sugar, and African slaves were brought to work them. Betty’s Mill is one survival of that period, a cane-crushing plant now being restored on its forlorn little hill-top. The Antiguan people are another: almost all 65,000 of them are of African descent. There is no point in trying to pass over the plantation years, especially if, like me, you live outside Bath in Somerset. Large parts of that grand Georgian city were built with West Indian sugar money, notably Beckford’s Tower which overlooks Bath and which was built by the eccentric William Beckford, who also built Fonthill in Wiltshire with his sugar fortune. So is the magnificent Codrington Library at All Souls College in Oxford, named after a planter and governor of the Leeward Islands. The historic centre of Antigua isn’t St John’s, the little capital where the vast cruise ships from Miami dock, but English Harbour on the south of the island, a fine natural harbour of two lagoons whose 18th- century buildings have been happily preserved.
The best view of the harbour is from Shirley Heights, a great headland overshadowing the lagoons, where 200-year-old barracks have been converted into a hotel and bar. It was presumably at English Harbour that Sir Thomas Bertram landed when he went out to inspect his Antiguan plantation in Mansfield Park. Driving around and across the island (which I’m fairly sure Jane Austen never visited), I wondered where Bertram’s plantation might be. On the north-west, near St John’s, a county of flat fields and sand? Or in the much damper and lusher south-west, with its dense foliage and banana palms? Or on the north-east, where we stayed at the Long Bay Hotel, with its long beach on one side of a spit of land and on the other a lagoon where I attempted to sail baby boats?Jane Austen’s novel has become contentious because of the Antiguan reference. In his recent book with the self-explanatory title Culture and Imperialism, Edward Said devotes a good deal of attention to the book. It doesn’t occur to him that the Antiguan plantation is a device in the plot designed to remove Sir Thomas from the action at a critical moment, and may have no political or economic significance. What’s for certain is that Bertram’s plantations, had they existed, would have decayed and fallen. The years after the emancipation of the slaves were bleak ones for the West Indians: they were paid a pittance by land- owners who were no longer obliged even to feed and clothe them.
What is strange is how much of England the islands retained, Antigua more than most: it is in some ways more English than England. At Willikie’s on a Sunday morning you see something you will never see from Land’s End to Hadrian’s Wall: an Anglican church with standing room only, packed out on to the porch. The hotels and restaurants are also curiously reminiscent of home. Around English Harbour there are several Italianate or seafood eateries which might be found in the Home Counties. Although St John’s is little more than an overgrown village, whose buildings are still mostly only two-storey, it too has something of the air of an English seaside town. And there, on the edge of the town, was one of the things we – or I – had come for. The attachment of the West Indians to cricket is a fascinating oddity. It was introduced some time in the last century, presumably by British soldiers and sailors.

Between points, she has the proud posture and slow strut of a Bluebell Girl. Now she is free to be as tough on herself, the new French self, as she wants. Given her background, the phrase “adopted country” must have special meaning for Pierce. Her almost ceremonious sense of style helps her fit in. Since her appearance in last year’s French Open final she has begun speaking French at home.It is part of the making-over of Mary Pierce, just like the nimbler footwork and new thoughtfulness on court. Her father, Jim Pierce, was notoriously hard on his American daughter and so spectacularly obstreperous in general that he is now banned from the women’s tour.
What began as a tactical option for the Pierces has become Mary’s personal choice. She hopes to increase the two or three months a year she spends here and is looking for a two-bedroomed flat within easy reach of Roland Garros. Who worried about Picasso’s accent and passport when he was admitted into the modern French Pantheon? And after all, Pierce’s mother, Yannick, is of Parisian stock – her family lived in the southern suburbs – and the player herself – she was born in Montreal and brought up in the States – has now committed to her third nationality. She’s got to be French.”The French can be culturally unforgiving but they have always been alert to chances of imported glory. They’ve been annexing artistes for years and granting them the honorary citizenship accorded to high talent. “Is she Mary Pierce or Marie Peeairse?” He then concluded: “She is elegant She is bright. If you cannot talk back on a TV talk show you are a non-starter, but her advisers have clearly decided to meet the issue head-on. On a Canal Plus programme last week Pierce made her entry in a big American convertible and then implored Antoine de Caunes, “Just remember to slow your questions down a bit for me”.”Is this young lady French or not?” De Caunes queried.
Sports stars are not noted for verbal fluency but a foreign accent still stands out.
A year ago, Pierce’s French was as shaky as her on-court tactical sense. They have both shown marked progress but there is still room for improvement. Homecomings are subtle affairs if you hold three passports – American, Canadian and French – and your mastery of the language of Moliere remains incomplete. Mary Pierce’s first Grand Slam victory at last month’s Australian Open has propelled her to No 3 in the world rankings and made her the draw card, along with Steffi Graf, at this week’s Paris Open At 20, she has arrived Whether she has come home is not so clear. They then needed just five ends to wrap up victory with a 7-1 win in the next. Also through to the quarter-finals are Scotland’s Graham Robertson and Mark McMahon.

Harlow and King recovered from 5-1 down to take the opening set 7-6, lost the second 7-5 but moved ahead again with a 7-3 win in the next. The Scots found themselves in what appeared to be a hopeless position when they trailed 2-5 in the fourth set, but a double followed by a three saw them take the set 7-5 and they went on to clinch victory with a 7- 4 win in the decider.. After all, it’s a world title we are playing for.”The Scots recovered from 5-2 down in the opening set and, despite losing the second, pushed themselves back into the driving seat with a 7-5 win in the third. The final match, between Scotland’s David Miller and Hugh Duff and Australia’s Steve Glasson and Ian Taylor, eventually finished at 2.45 yesterday morning, with the Scots winning 7-6, 1-7, 7-5, 7-1.Duff, the former world indoor singles champion, was critical of the organisation.

He is, after all, the man who rescued TV-am by importing Anne, Nick and Roland Rat.Gyngell is a skilled businessman who has read the market well throughout his career. The NVALA may have clutched him to their hearts, but he has a long and noble history of lowering our broadcasting standards. “I believe that in the mass broadcast media people should expect never to be embarrassed and that they should be able to watch a programme with their families and be able to enjoy it.”Bruce Gyngell is an anomaly among moral crusaders. “The programmes that are the most popular on television are the ones that do stick to some family values,” he said. His remark at the Royal Television Society that “so-called entertainment which once could only be found in the seedy cellars and basements of Soho clip-joints is paraded on mainstream television as if it were respectable” became one of the most quoted of last year.”What,” he added, “are we doing to our sensibilities and moral values and, more importantly, to those of our children, when day after day we broadcast an unremitting diet of violence, extremes of sexuality and negative behaviour?”Comments worthy of Mrs Whitehouse.Last Friday brought more of the same. In January, YTT replaced Hollywood Lovers with reruns of Whicker’s World. These events were given an extra fillip by Gyngell’s notable skills at publicity. Last year, the sex shows Carnal Knowledge, The Good Sex Guide and God’s Gift bit the dust.
Gyngell, a dapper 67-year-old Australian, has entered the good books of the NVALA by pulling programmes and providing soundbites that pierce the heart of Middle England. Presenting are Diane-Louise Jordan, former Blue Peter girl now fronting Songs of Praise, and the man who is the current darling of the new moralists and has been described by NVALA’s Chairman, The Revd Graham Stevens as “a television director who has taken action to show that he is concerned about working to good broadcasting standards”.
Step forward Bruce Gyngell, MD of Yorkshire/Tyne Tees. This year’s winners are Great Ormond Street, Pride and Prejudice and Goldwyn Associates’ The Business: Tomorrow’s Television. Recipients of their awards have included Cliff Richard, Frank Bough, Tomorrow’s World, Jim’ll Fix It, Songs of Praise, Crimewatch, Highway, Record Breakers and Challenge Anneka. NVALA is the watchdog body set up by Mary Whitehouse to keep an eye on the nation’s programming.
This is not your average boozy media event: tea and sandwiches and a sartorial style owing more to Lord Cardigan than Mr Armani. Friday night, in a church hall in Marylebone, and the National Viewers and Listeners’ Association (or “National VALA” as their courageous acronym runs) are handing out their annual awards. I like sticking my neck out, which probably hasn’t done me any favours in the company I’m currently at, but I think you have to fight for what you believe in. Glenda is a great example of that, because when we launched Marie Claire, I got such criticism over her appointment, internally and externally “What are you doing, Heather?” people said.

PRISTINA (Reuters) – Vice President Joe Biden received a tumultuous welcome in Kosovo on Thursday just hours after leaving Serbia where thousands of police kept streets empty to avoid anti-American protests.
World | Barack ObamaThe contrasting welcomes on a three-day tour of the Balkans highlighted both warm Kosovar feelings for the United States which has supported its independence, and the still uneasy relations between Serbia and Washington.”Welcome and Thank You,” said posters across Pristina, showing pictures of Biden, a former U.S. senator known for his support of Kosovo independence from Serbia.Thousands of schoolchildren lined his route into town, holding up American and Kosovo flags. They cheered wildly as his black limousine passed, and some chanted: “USA, USA.”"The United States and God saved us in 1999. Biden is our man and I came here to see him,” said Shukri Morina, who traveled 30 kilometers (19 miles) to Pristina. In Serbia, police cleared the streets of people who still bitterly remember the NATO 1999 bombing of Belgrade, and some offices were told to keep their windows shut with the curtains drawn. Hundreds of police lined Biden’s route to the airport and even the tarmac itself.Kosovo, where more than 90 percent of its two million people are ethnic Albanians, declared independence last year, but Serbia is suing in an international court, claiming it had no right to do so.International troops still patrol, including about 1,400 from the United States. Over the past decade the international community has given billions of dollars in aid to landlocked Kosovo, the Balkans’ smallest geographic country.”I think the government has made considerable progress in the first year, it’s remarkable,” Biden said in a meeting with Kosovo’s prime minister and president. “The United States has made it clear that the recognition of Kosovo is irreversible.”Unemployment is still very high and crime and corruption remain serious.
With several European Union countries refusing to recognize Kosovo, it is the only Balkan country without any EU prospects at present.”We have given our commitments to continue good governance, transparency, rule of law and fight corruption,” said Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci. Biden’s visit “is a reconfirmation of powerful support from the U.S. for the progress that we have achieved in Kosovo.”CHURCH DISPUTETo highlight American support for the rights of the ethnic Serb minority, Biden plans to visit the 14th century Decani monastery, one of the jewels of the Serbian Orthodox Church. But Orthodox Church leaders in Kosovo with jurisdiction over Decani criticized the plans.”The U.S. vice president is visiting Kosovo as an independent state, to confirm the forceful secession of Serbia’s territory and its handover to Albanian terrorists who were not punished for numerous crimes against Serbian people, Serbian property and Serbian cultural and religious heritage,” they said in a press statement.”Does Joseph Biden want to confirm with his gesture that Decani is an American base in Kosovo, the same as camp Bondsteel?” the statement asked, referring to a military base Biden was also to visit on Thursday.(Additional reporting by Fatos Bytyci in Pristina and Branislav Krstic in Decani; Editing by Myra MacDonald) World Barack Obama.
But it is contesting only 11 of the assembly’s 128 seats, most of which are effectively allotted in advance under Lebanon’s complex sectarian power-sharing system.Amal may win a bigger number, with overall victory for the bloc dependent on how Aoun and his Christian allies perform.POSTURING OVER UNITY GOVERNMENT”The election swing will be very narrow,” said Shafiq Masri, law professor at the Lebanese University. “So it’s not a choice, it’s a necessity to come back to a national unity government.”The election antagonists, yoked since July in an uneasy broad-based government, have been posturing on the issue.Saad al-Hariri, head of the loose anti-Syrian coalition, has declared he would rather go into opposition if his side loses. Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah countered that he “won’t beg” Hariri and company to join a unity government.Nevertheless, Nasrallah is unlikely to favor an overtly partisan cabinet that Western and some Arab countries might cold-shoulder, as they have the Palestinian government led by Hamas, which lies with Hezbollah on the U.S. terrorist list.”The (Hezbollah-led) opposition cannot deal with the outside world if it insists on ruling alone,” Masri said.A detente in Syrian-Saudi ties has already defused tensions in Lebanon in recent months Continued regional calm as U.S. He saw Suleiman as lynchpin of a bloc that has “good relations with Syria, growing security relations with the West and a civil relationship with Hezbollah.”FURY AT SYRIA LOSING RELEVANCE?Hariri’s candidates may find less potency in the anti-Syrian rallying cry that helped them win the 2005 election. The vote took place soon after Syrian troops quit Lebanon amid an outcry over the killing of Saad’s statesman father, Rafik al-Hariri.Syria is no longer shunned by the West and won some approval in the past year by forging diplomatic ties with Lebanon for the first time since the two countries gained independence. While few expect Damascus to re-implant a military presence in Lebanon, an election win for its allies would reinforce its political — and perhaps security — influence in its neighbor. This could spell difficulties ahead for the international tribunal set up to try Hariri’s killers. Last month the court ordered the release of four pro-Syrian Lebanese generals held for nearly four years, citing lack of evidence to indict them. The likeliest election outcome may be a messy compromise, heralding a return to traditional Lebanese politics that might ensure temporary stability but defer any serious reform.”They have tried to take on the radical elements, including Hezbollah, and they have lost,” Makdissi said of Hariri’s bloc.”The political class is ready to settle back into their hibernation of making money and milking the state of all its resources, so services and social issues continue to suffer.”The wild card, Makdissi argued, is Aoun, the former scourge of Syria now allied with Hezbollah.
Which, in the case of an abortive “D’Yer Wanna Be a Spaceman?”, is more than can be said for Liam.
That’s not to say that Oasis didn’t have a part, and a couple of guitars, to play. They write the songs that make the whole stadium sing, after all. It’s the coruscating power of their super-melodic anthems that galvanises us But this is nothing new. There was more to it than a team of men kicking a tune around. There was the ecstasy of all 40,000 of us knowing all the words to all the songs.
There’s the liberation of belonging, of being one of so many thousand people who are chanting the same chant, charged by the same charge, abandoning themselves cathartically to unbridled emotional expression. And then there’s buying too much alcohol and overpriced merchandise. Last weekend, it was Oasis, not Man City FC, who drew the faithful to Maine Road stadium, but the principle was much the same. As a concert it had its ups (slatherings of brass and harmonica, flawless sound quality, Liam having shaven off that beard) and downs (the sudden, anti-climactic finale of Slade’s “Cum On, Feel the Noize”, a song inferior to almost all of Oasis’s originals) but these were scarcely relevant. On poetry, he said that someone like Wilfred Owen has earnt every word: his voice is the melody of endured sorrow.
For himself, he aimed towards the “proffered reality of musically transported truth” Yes – aims, and hits the mark every time. A line from his latest collection, The Spirit Level, defines his technique: it is to “catch the heart off- guard, blow it open”.. There’s more to a top- level football match than a team of men kicking a ball around. He agreed, adding that the rock-bottom quality of the species is to hold the line until some form of renewal occurs, even at the burnt-out level, the bottom layer of Troy. If Mozart could pluck perfect tunes from nowhere, Heaney is the Mozart of words.
It was easy to understand why Kate Kellaway, interviewing him, sounded so thrilled.Kellaway suggested that there is a real theme of survival in his work, a sense that we must praise things that have endured. Eat your heart out, Abba, this sophisticated bunch can not only sing in close harmony but can also, eerily, mimic brazen trumpets.I’m sorry about today’s column. Critics are expected to carp and grumble – and often that is all too easy – but it’s been a bumper week. The Kaleidoscope Feature was Seamus Heaney on Air (R4) – and on everything else that matters. Most impressive was a piece from some Swedish singers called The Real Group. The unaccompanied songs dealt with the rigours of travelling life, liberally sprinkled with romantic moments in the heather and performed with a spirit of fire and passion. A Stewart daughter gives master- classes in the art: they must be challenging.More unaccompanied singing came from Maddy Prior In Good Voice (R2).

Most artists in the show can find no will to go beyond this seductive state. My work is manual, involving lots of lifting, fetching and carrying – and no sitting down. After all that, I still find time and energy for regular nights out.

Sir: Having just seen the “Sensation” exhibition at the Royal Academy I have emerged feeling manipulated and undernourished. The most prevalent quality of the show is lack of emotional maturity. The works over and over again reveal an obsession with the egoistic self. I also do karate training twice a week, plus some general weight training. I only wish they’d interviewed me!
I am 38 and have been a vegan (no meat, fish or dairy products) for the last eight years; I have eaten no meat at all for 10 years. Its routes will enable your correspondents to cycle by safe and attractive ways from the centre of Bristol, Newport, Gloucester and other nearby settlements, hopefully enjoying the journey itself so much that some will not even reach the Forest!
In the meantime, the very popularity of the Dean’s cycling routes gives us confidence that there is a large suppressed demand for cycling which will be realised as we resolve the present intolerable conflict with traffic.
JOHN GRIMSHAWDirector, SustransBristol. Sir: According to a report by the Wellman Clinic in London, men who eat red meat are healthier, fitter and less prone to exhaustion than those who don’t (“Veggies who can’t resist the pleasures of the flesh”, 15 September). Sir: Your correspondence (Letters, 13 and 15 September) on cyclists driving to the Forest of Dean, in order to enjoy the excellent trails provided by the Forestry Commission, demonstrates just how overdue the National Cycle Network is. If Schultz wins his case against Bennett, Bennett will be forced to give the team up to local ownership.. But it has been clearly shown in the past, and just reiterated today, that Bennett failed to make such an effort. Bennett signed a document promising to make a good-faith effort to keep the team in Seattle. Schultz is contending that Bennett lied to him when he sold the team. But what this really does is set up nicely the case later on between former owner Howard Schultz and Bennett. Therefore, Bennett is obligated to stay in Seattle for two more years, no matter how much money he may lose. Bennett admitted that he is unaware of any provision in the contract whereby the contract can be breached.
Money does not equal effort. What this trial is about is whether Bennett should be allowed to break his lease with KeyArena and move the team. He can talk about the money he spent, but just because he spent money, doesn?t mean he tried very hard. Clearly, he wanted to move the team to Oklahoma City from the very beginning He made very little effort to keep the team in Seattle. Not only that, but Bennett himself admitted today that he did not have the legislation, a detailed arena plan to submit to the state Legislature on time. What today showed to me was nothing more than more evidence that Bennett had no intentions of keeping the team in Seattle. 8, 2006 and July 2007, Bennett did not once meet with Nickels.
But how possessed could he have possibly been to give up after just one effort? Usually when negotiations are taking place, both sides will throw out ridiculous demands to kind of feel each other out Nickels wanted KeyArena to be renovated for a cheap amount Bennett countered with the $500 million proposal But once both offers got rejected, Bennett gave up Between Aug. And once it got rejected, he lost hope and started looking to move the team He claims he was a man possessed. ?While I am prepared for us to take responsibility for securing private money in order to ensure this is a true public and private partnership, I will not be committing to a dollar figure for our ownership group.? How can Bennett possibly expect Washington state taxpayers to fund a $500 million arena proposal when they don?t even know how much Bennett is willing to contribute? No wonder it got shot down so quickly. To cap it all off, this $500 million arena was the ONLY one that Bennett proposed. He didn?t even announce the amount he wanted to pay to the public.
