All but a handful of those ballets, and five of their creators, have never had a showing in this country before. What a change that will be after months dominated by revivals, classics and other familiar works.
The San Francisco Ballet is here now for a week at Covent Garden, building on the popularity of its London debut two years ago at Sadler’s Wells.
Then, after a gap of only a week, the New York City Ballet comes to the Edinburgh Festival, where it was a great success last year. Both companies will give three different programmes, each of four or even five ballets.Everyone naturally associates the NYCB with its founding genius George Balanchine, and last year’s Edinburgh programmes were almost entirely by him. But people forget that this company was never just a one-man show. Right from his first days in America, in the 1930s, Balanchine and his co-director Lincoln Kirstein, were looking for and helping new talent.
The company proudly claims to have presented a total of 345 ballets by 65 different choreographers. So, although it may have seemed odd of Edinburgh to say “Please, no Balanchine this time”, there was nothing perverse about it. The festival, having shown the company’s heritage, now wants to show its future.Helgi Tomasson, the director of San Francisco Ballet, was under no such pressure. He merely wanted, he says, to show his company’s diversity and style. Only by choosing a range of works could he reveal the versatility of his exceptional dancers.
The London programmes are, he says, “very much the type of ballets we do”: always at least four to six creations a year, plus a few other ballets new to the company. His audiences expect and enjoy this.Besides its new works, the San Francisco Ballet regularly dances many works by Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, America’s two greatest ballet-makers, both of whom Tomasson knew well in his days as a leading dancer with NYCB. So he is bringing examples of those, but has taken care that none is at all hackneyed. Bugaku is not only one of Balanchine’s more unusual ballets but also “something I think we dance very well”. And Robbins’s Fanfare has a special British link; it was created in New York to mark the Queen’s coronation, and is set to Benjamin Britten’s The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.Besides those two American greats of the former generation, Tomasson has won the trust of Mark Morris, their most eminent successor, who has now made several creations for San Francisco. The latest of them, A Garden, is coming, as well as a repeat of his light-hearted Sandpaper Ballet. Local critics have likened A Garden to Morris’s wildly popular L’Allegro.Tomasson is proud also that each London programme contains one of the pieces created last year for a special Discovery season by young choreographers.
