Coach Saunders will have to impress on McGee that he needs to control himself on offense and that it is not his job to score 20 points. For the second straight game the Wizards had 20+ assists, out-dishing the Nuggets 22-12 in this one. He had 98 hits with 28 doubles no triples.I’m not sure how well he will do in the Pirates lineup, but you’ve got to give the guy a chance, because he will at least provide some contact. 6. I think Lee would definitely have leaned towards the latter. However, there are a couple of arguments that could be made against my scenario: The first argument one could make is that the Phillies would not have gotten the same level of prospects for Werth as they did for Lee. Caceres did well to close down Suazo on the counter, but Juve were more aggressive in this second half Juventus took the lead with a spectacular goal. WWE Creative Team made a fatal mistake when they made this guy champ. Where the Sooners have added size and depth to their roster with 30 commits, Texas has been more frugal, more discerning, though no less successful. But with all due respect to Bob Stoops, Hicks’ commitment leaves Oklahoma and the rest of the Big 12?and most of the country, really?in the rear-view mirror.Texas is gunning for the top spot in national recruiting as ferociously as it pursued the national championship throughout this past season. As long as National Signing Day is bereft of the metaphorical poorly timed shovel pass, you’re looking at one of the best classes Brown and company have ever put together Another round of applause for the Mack, if you would.. It would also face the out-of-division team that finished in the same position the previous year within its division, and home field would rotate by even and odd-numbered seasons. For example, if the Big 14 East held home field in 2015, and Texas won the West in 2014 with Ohio State winning the East, the Longhorns would travel to Columbus. These “rematch” games could draw huge ratings. That obligates each Big 14 team to play seven conference games in a 12-game schedule, freeing the schools to schedule traditional rivals in the remaining five contests.Texas could still face off against A&M and Oklahoma, Pitt could still have its “Backyard Brawl” with West Virginia, and Michigan, Purdue and Michigan State could maintain their annual tilts against Notre Dame.In some cases, these old rivalries, having gained the status of out-of-conference games, may give member schools higher ratings and more revenue. Primarily, they brought in Dick Jauron to be a coach in Sean McDermott’s defense. Jon Gosselin lights up
“I can’t believe how some clubs have failed to regulate these deals – aren’t they supposed to be businessmen?” said one agent, who asked to remain anonymous.Jon Holmes is pessimistic about whether reform will come about: “We need much tighter regulation by the Football Association and if they will not act – and I am not sure whether they will do so with sufficient vigour – then the Government must do something. This means there is no incentive for players to shop around for agents, said John Williams, director of the Centre for the Sociology of Sport at Leicester University. They were already under pressure from MPs and others, even before the disclosure this week of the £13m paid by Manchester United to outside agencies, including Elite, co-owned by Sir Alex’s son, Jason.Jon Holmes, chief executive of one of biggest agencies, SFX, which represents England stars such as Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard, agrees with critics that the concern about his profession is justified: “Football is now very big business and like all big businesses it is capable of corruption. Suddenly players were earning huge money, sportswear firms craved endorsement and transfer fees rocketed. Footballers suddenly needed people to handle all this. There are now 229 officially registered English agents and about another 55 in Scotland; all of whom have to pass a Fifa examination to establish their credentials.
Then, in the early 1990s along came the Premiership and Rupert Murdoch, anxious for people to buy satellite dishes. Although the Government has yet to respond, the MPs have already decided to survey clubs about agents and are said to be considering another inquiry solely into the subject of agents.Only a dozen or so years ago, agents did not exist. If only one tenth of what is said to be going on actually is going on, then we need to take action about it.”Earlier this year, the All-Party Football group of MPs called for payments to agents by clubs to be made public – a move endorsed by the non-Premiership clubs – for all employees of agencies to be licensed and for a levy on transfer deal commissions to be ploughed back to help the grassroots of the game. David Dein, the vice-chairman of Arsenal, who has good cause to be wary, is said to sometimes make them sign deals on a copy of the Bible.Over the past few years agents are said to have indulged in massive profiteering at the expense of clubs, aiding the demise of Leeds United and the failure of the Scottish national side along the way. Now, their activities have cast a long shadow over the career of Sir Alex Ferguson.Although there are now growing calls for regulation to govern their activities, it remains unclear whether either the Football Association or the Government will take action to ensure greater transparency. Now, in the heady world of the Premiership and its European equivalents, endorsement deals and multimillion-pound TV rights, they are an intrinsic part of the game.
But they have also been accused of being greedy leeches.
Back in the days when members of England’s World Cup winning team were forced to auction their shirts and medals to make money, football agents simply did not exist. But police confirmed that there are greater concerns surrounding security at England’s second match against Switzerland the following week in Coimbra, north of the capital.. The police operation will be “high-visibility” and “non-confrontational”, aimed at removing individual offenders.England’s first match against France in Lisbon on 13 June is expected to attract 30,000 England fans. David Swift, the Deputy Chief Constable of Staffordshire and head of the British police team for Euro 2004, said the operation would concentrate on people with convictions for football-related violence.Convicted hooligans were warned yesterday that they would be caught if they attempted to enter Portugal from airports in Scotland and Northern Ireland, or if they flew to Malaga in southern Spain to use that as a jumping-off point.Mr Swift said police tactics in and around stadiums had been developed over the past year with their counterparts from Portugal and the Netherlands.

Having recently been asked to put together a list of the 10 best books about investment, one thing immediately struck me about the resulting list (which can be found at ). It is that the great majority of the best books on my list originate from the United States; given our long tradition of managing money as a profession, and being a highly literate nation, it is surprising how few really good books about investment we have produced. It may have something to do with the fact that the market here is relatively small compared with that in the United States; if few good investment books are produced, it is equally surprising how few people ever bother to read one at all. The self-help tradition, once such a strong feature of our culture, is much more developed on the other side of the Atlantic.
For that reason, I wonder how many people will get round to reading Jim Rogers’ new book about commodities, recently published in this country by John Wiley.
Rogers, some readers may recall, is the former partner of George Soros who retired from active money management at the age of 37, in order to look after his own money, do some teaching and travel round the world on a motorbike. He is an engaging and interesting character who, purely incidentally, once coxed in the Boat Race while a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford. His commodities book is first class and one that I would strongly recommend, not least because it is admirably clear and (to my mind) persuasive. The Rogers thesis is that commodities are the forgotten asset class that all investors now need to start boning up on. He believes that commodities ended a 20-year bear market in 1998 and are now entering a new secular bull market that will probably continue for at least another decade, while stocks, bonds and property – which have had their great bull market – will do relatively poorly.Although many people have latched on to the recent strength of two of the more visible commodities, gold and crude oil, there could well be just as much action, says Rogers, in some of the other commodity classes that nobody ever thinks about these days – the likes of lead, sugar and coffee.

And again, after Ekoku had restored the advantage by lifting Ian Crook’s raking pass over Jan Stejskal’s advance, their aerial resistance was non-existent as Darren Peacock leapt to loop Gary Penrice’s penetrating throw-in, helped on by Devon White, out of Bryan Gunn’s reach.Norwich were still searching for some composure when Rangers scored again, Trevor Sinclair finding the head of Penrice with a cross from the right.Perhaps there was a shade of offside about the fourth Rangers goal – a well-deserved reward for White, deputising tirelessly for the injured Les Ferdinand – but then Ekoku’s first had been preceded by a clear push in the back on David Bardsley.Norwich came back again as Rangers’ concentration flagged, Mark Bowen blasting home a fine half-volley from the edge of the box; but the Londoners would not be denied what was only their second win in 10 starts.Rangers’ last goal followed the loss by Norwich of Rob Newman with a suspected broken arm, but there was no excuse for basic mistakes, as Deehan conceded.Having begun the day responding to reports of a pounds 4m Tottenham move for Chris Sutton, so far repulsed by the chairman, Robert Chase, Deehan ended it waiting for a change of luck. “It is wonderful news for the victims of this dreadful injustice that they may, at last, receive compensation for their suffering,” Ms Altmann said. “They trusted the Government, trusted our pension system, but have been left in misery.”So far, the Government has agreed to put up just £20m – spread across the next 20 years – to help the 65,000 workers who lost their pensions before May of this year. Ms Altmann estimates that about £75m a year over the next 40 years is necessary to provide meaningful compensation. The fate of 40,000 former Turner & Newall workers, the insolvent car parts manufacturer whose pension fund needs £300m, is also still uncertain. Government plans announced last week, look set to land the liabilities of T&N on the pensions protection fund, a new privately funded pensions lifeboat, which is to be launched in April. Lawyers preparing cases against Merck say it was compiled to help Merck’s sales force duck doctors’ questions about the risks of heart attacks and strokes from Vioxx. There is also a string of reports and studies dating back to soon after Vioxx was introduced in 1999 showing the drug, and its class of painkillers known as Cox-2 inhibitors, was controversial.
Internal FDA memos, reported in The New York Times, show one of the body’s own doctors, David Graham, estimated Vioxx had been associated with more than 27,000 heart attacks or deaths linked to cardiac problems.Mr Gilmartin will use the high-profile hearing on Capitol Hill to emphasise that internal documents have been taken out of context, and that previous studies were inconclusive. The critics have added that worrying signs of side effects of some Cox-2s such as Vioxx were greater than the ulcers and other stomach problems associated with the older generation of drugs. One particularly damning comment came from the Food and Drug Administration, the watchdog responsible for monitoring all medicines sold in the US. Some experts argue Cox-2s’ ability to control pain is no better than medications such as aspirin that they replaced. Internal company documents paint a picture of Merck executives who were concerned about the possible risks of the drug that was meant to be the new driver of growth for the company at a time when other major patents were expiring.Particularly embarrassing for Merck is a marketing document called “Dodge Ball Vioxx”. While Bazalgette does offer glancing discussions of the careers of Paul Smith, creator of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, and Charlie Parsons, who thought up the Survivor desert-island format, his attention is overwhelmingly focused on John de Mol: Big Brother’s Dutch progenitor.
Smith and Parsons found new ways of getting viewers emotionally involved, and in Millionaire, Smith showed the potential of revenue streams outside the traditional advertising break. The programme’s prize money is paid for entirely by the premium-rate lines on which members of the public apply to compete. But it was De Mol who put these new ideas together with new technology. For Bazalgette, the most important feature of Big Brother is the way it exploits new technology, with mobile-phone updates and telephone voting. The book is always readable; its accounts of the shock and outrage that have accompanied Big Brother’s various manifestations are particularly enjoyable But it has a void at its heart.
Perhaps because Bazalgette is so uncritical, John de Mol remains a grey, shadowy character. You learn a lot about his business deals but nothing about what makes him tick.I wished, too, that Bazalgette had engaged more positively with critics of Big Brother. On the one hand, he views the programme as a microcosm of society, so that complaints about it amount to shooting the messenger. At the same time, he implies that it has beneficial social effects, such as promoting tolerance.
This allows him to characterise critics as intolerant snobs. When Endemol first pitched Bazalgette the idea of locking people up under surveillance, he wrote in a memo that “This is far too cruel for the UK market.” I interviewed him recently, and tried to pin him down on whether he found the idea personally offensive, or was second-guessing audience reactions He avoided a direct answer. When John Damian de Falcuis launched himself from the ramparts of Stirling Castle in 1507 wearing wings of hen’s feathers it seemed Scotland’s place in aviation history was destined to be, at best, a footnote. Although they lost the race to be the first men to achieve powered flight, their influence on the development of aviation was of profound importance.During the First World War Frank was charged with designing a rival to Germany’s deadly Fokker E-type aircraft, which was destroying Britain’s cumbersome BE2s on the Western Front. He also designed the high-speed, “Britain First” bomber in 1933, predecessor to the Blenheim bomber. He died in 1938, but his designs, including the Beaufort torpedo bomber, were crucial to Britain’s success in the Second World War and his influence on aviation continued well into the second half of the century.Harold was killed in 1917 during the First World War after rising to become chief test pilot for Vickers.”The Americans had the Wright brothers, Scotland had Harold and Frank Barnwell,” said Stirling historian Craig Mair. “They built an aircraft hangar in Stirling, and put together their first full-sized aeroplane in 1908, though the engine was not powerful enough for it to take off.”Their next design made its first flight Then, on Wednesday July 28 1909, Harold piloted the plane more than 80 metres at an altitude of about four metres over a field in Stirling.”The following year, the brothers’ next design managed around 600 metres, this time with Frank piloting,” Mr Mair said. The following year, in the same plane, Harold attempted a flight over the Bridge of Allan.

I wanted to do something mainstream, I wanted to do something heroic, I wanted to get paid You know, I didn’t want to step into dark, indie world But it was great material. It was like it chose me.’”Shrinking with fear and self-loathing, Bacon’s understated performance is powerfully sympathetic. How did he approach the character? “Same as any other,” he says. “There’s whatever research you might want to do – in this case, you can read clinical studies, psychological studies of paedophiles, or crime statistics and they might help to a certain extent but it’s not like I could go and hang out with sex offenders and find out what a sex offender looks like and walks like and talks like. “I did it in Sleepers, I was just coming off Mystic River, which thematically was about bad things happening to children, and I was just about to direct Kyra in a movie that was also, if not about sexual abuse, about children getting into sad, sad situations It was exactly the opposite of what I was looking for.
That doesn’t happen in The Woodsman.”The ultimate perversion of his eternal boyishness, Walter seems the perfect part for Bacon. “If you’d asked me at the time, was I interested in playing a sex offender I would’ve said no,” says Bacon. “People who do bad things to children are often larger-than-life figures. Hollywood does that because audiences like to see the bad guys destroyed In Sleepers, I played an abuser of young boys When I was killed, the audience felt great. With his cocky strut, he has become adept at playing predatory, sexually ambivalent characters such as Meg Ryan’s desperate dog-walking suitor/stalker in In The Cut. (Typically, Bacon auditioned for the lead “I wanted that part, I wanted it real bad” but ended up with the disturbing cameo.)No-one understands Bacon’s unsettling appeal better than Bacon who, in his new film, has cast himself as the creep next door Except that, in Bacon’s hands, Walter is not a creep He’s an ordinary guy who happens to be a paedophile “I wanted to make my character a real person,” he says.
It’s this ambiguity, this almost-pretty, almost-mean thing that makes Bacon so compelling.Even if he’s not physically constrained – in space, on a raft, in a prison cell – Bacon generally picks roles which involve psychological repression of one kind or another: anger, violence, or deviancy, for instance. Ironically – for the film that was to become the chewing gum on the heel of his career – he wasn’t even a shoo-in for Footloose. Indeed, so unconvinced was the then-studio-head Dawn Steel that she famously went around Columbia flashing a photo of Bacon asking, “is he fuckable?” Sure, his high cheekbones, snub nose and deep-set blue eyes were handsome enough but there was something subversive, un-American about that knowing smirk. He’s the industry insider who plays the outsider but still yearns to be “in a big studio picture kicking ass, getting the girl, driving the car,” the fantastic actor who’s done more than his share of B-movies (the giant-earthworm-horror Tremors, the invisible-man romp The Hollow Man, the schoolgirl sex-thriller Wild Things.)When it comes to casting, Bacon’s looks have worked both for and against him. Beneath it all, though, was the twin determination to be a serious actor and to make it big.
“Yeah, in terms of what I aspired to, the two things have sorta gone hand in hand,’ he agrees, “or rather they’ve been conflicting.”The result is Bacon’s cult status, affectionately held among audiences, as a Hollywood star without many starring roles. From an early age, he had to steal scenes from an ensemble cast By the time he was nine, all his siblings had left home. At 17, he did too, skipping college to go to New York and study drama at The Circle in the Square It was the seventies Kevin took drugs, chased girls, had fun. Instead he’s shown a versatility and skill that often threatens to outclass the star. In Apollo 13 he cannily decided to be “the quiet one” – instantly making his character more intriguing than windy old Tom Hanks, while in The River Wild the amoral energy of his white-trash anti-hero was more appealing than Meryl Streep’s “supermom”.Born into a Philadelphia family of high achievers – his Mum was a teacher and liberal political activist, his Dad a famous city planner – Kevin was the youngest, by far, of six kids. Nobody saw it.”So Bacon began to take supporting roles in films that people would see.

In two weeks’ time an election is to be held in Iran for a new president – an election that is void of the basic standards of a free and fair electoral system. Thus calls for new emissions curbs and limits on “gas-guzzling” cars is coming at regional levels. Margaret Beckett as good as admits Britain has been pushing the US to go further and faster. But if the history of debt relief is any precedent, there will be more arguing to come and public pressure will have a big part to play. The US will not see sense in time for Gleneagles, but all the pushing may not, in the long term, be in vain.. And change has happened at least in part because of strong and sustained public pressure: it did not originate with banks or national governments. Simply, popular understanding of the vicious circle of indebtedness and poverty is far superior now to what it was a generation ago.
It is in no rich country’s interests to be perceived as profiting from the poverty of another – and the United States is no exception. There are small signs in the US that pressure to tackle climate change is starting to grow, and that it is coming from certain parts of the country and sections of the scientific community. For aid given by one set of contributors to be taken back in the form of interest repayments, leaving many poor countries worse off, tended to be seen as a theoretical, small-print issue, to be considered far below the urgent needs of the starving. That an accord has been reached that will cancel all the debts of 18 of the world’s poorest countries and set conditions for new assistance shows how much has changed. More than 20 years ago, before Bob Geldof and Live Aid made the rich world aware of the extent of hunger in Africa, Third World debt was hardly a popular issue. China may have ratified the Kyoto treaty, but its soaring consumption has the potential to destabilise the world energy market. There may be a case for trying to go beyond Kyoto. That said, however, there may be lessons from the accord on debt relief that can be applied to the transatlantic rift over climate change. But this will not change before the G8 summit.Something we may hear more about when the eight leaders gather at Gleneagles is a new global forum for “dialogue” on energy-use and new technologies, in which non-G8 countries, such as China, could also be involved. This would not bring US agreement on climate change, but would not be the worst of options.
There was, she admitted, “a degree of disappointment” about the refusal of the United States to give ground on this issue. It was also, she implied, accepted in both capitals that there was no chance this would change. She made clear that, so far as the US was concerned, Kyoto was “off the agenda”; even in the unlikely event that President Bush could be converted, the treaty would “probably” not be passed by the US Senate. This is putting it politely. We can condemn Americans’ selfish attachment to their cars, their profligate use of energy and their slowness to close polluting power stations. There is, and never was, the slightest chance that the Senate – Republican majority or no – would sign up to measures that it, along with most of the US public, believes would threaten the “American way of life”. One almost down, one to go, might be the verdict on the Government’s preparations for the Group of Eight summit next month.
With three weeks of preparation ahead, the international debt cancellation package so desired by Gordon Brown appears to be in the bag, and that is a notable achievement even if the aid and trade elements remain to be finalised. On the other headline issue of the summit, however – combating climate change – there seems to have been no advance, and none whatsoever on the horizon.
In an interview with The Independent, the Environment Secretary, Margaret Beckett, was frank, both about the difficulties and about where to place the blame. There must also be awareness that for those children unhappy, or bullied, at school, extended hours could become a torment. In the end, the balance must be for parents to draw. The work-life equation in Britain is already tilted too far against family life by our long working hours. Extended school opening should be a convenience that adds to the quality of life, not another excuse for parents to spend less time with their children.. The activities would have to be sufficiently different not to seem like a continuation of the school day.
Teachers, who have only just won additional time for lesson preparation and marking, will hardly volunteer for extra hours of duty without extra pay. The interaction of the public and private sector – which, the Government says, will be involved in the initiative – will also need to be handled carefully. The £680m mentioned by Ms Kelly to set up the scheme may prove far from adequate.A separate cause for concern is the possible effect on pupils of spending so long in the same milieu. It’s a habit that was passed down through generations of Punters My parents read it and their parents did. She said that in recent days the ICRC had helped an estimated 40,000 people at three locations close to Fallujah. She said it was known that at least 5,000 people had left for Baghdad before the battle for the city commenced.A report from the Inter Press Service quoted an unnamed official with the Red Cross who estimated that while 800 civilians had been killed, up to 50,000 civilians had remained in the city. Most estimates have put the figure much lower than this but there is no way of accurately telling how many may remain.”Several Red Cross workers have returned from Fallujah as the Americans won’t let them into the city,” said the official. “They said the people they are tending to in the refugee camps outside the city are telling horrible stories of suffering and death inside Fallujah.”Reporters inside the city have described streets strewn with charred bodies.
In line with Muslim burial rites, Iraqis yesterday continued collecting bodies for burial, finding 14 in total.”We’re Iraqis and they’re Iraqis and we want to get them,” Mohammed Ali, a 32-year-old farmer helping to remove bodies, told an journalist in the shattered city “It’s in our religion. The rules say that relatives or families or Arabs should help them.”The US military has said that 38 Americans, six Iraqi soldiers and an estimated 1,200 insurgents were killed in the offensive.”This exemplifies the horrors of war,” said US Marine Capt PJ Batty of the body pick-up. “We don’t wish this upon anyone, but everyone needs to understand there are consequences for not following the Iraqi government.”. One report yesterday quoted an unnamed Red Cross official in Baghdad as saying up to 800 civilians were feared dead.In Geneva Anatonella Notari, the chief spokeswoman for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), said that the agency had been unable to make an independent examination of most of the city. Officials from its sister organisation, the Red Crescent, had spent three days in areas controlled by US and Iraqi troops, but had been prevented from crossing the Euphrates river into the centre of Fallujah.
Granada is in a good position to take advantage by moving many of Forte’s hotels to higher market tiers.Forte was late to rise to the challenge, hanging on to the well trusted business methods in the belief – and it was not alone – that the recession would be short-lived. Forte was quite happy to promote the notion that it was the single biggest hotel operator in the UK, but it was nothing other than a small fish in a small pond.Investors had to foot the bill for the management’s mistakes. Dividends were cut a couple of years ago and there was little prospect of any restoration of dividend payments until Granada launched its assault.Prospects for the hotel and leisure industries, which are increasingly interlocked, may look considerably brighter than for some time but Granada, despite its victory, is not going to be in a position to dictate the play.. Once they roamed the countryside drinking ginger beer and solving mysteries. Now the Famous Five have been condemned to London’s entertainment palace, the Trocadero – serving out their copyright.Enid Blyton’s characters have been sold off in a move not even Timmy the dog’s crime-busting skills could have prevented. For pounds 13m Trocadero plc has bought the remaining 43 years of copyright to all Blyton’s books – more than 600 titles, of which some 8.5 million are sold worldwide every year. The sale of Darrell Waters, the family company which owned all the rights, was agreed by descendants of the author who died in 1968.
Yesterday Blyton’s daughter Gillian Baverstock, who has run the business in recent years, admitted she had been unable to afford to keep it. “I did try to raise the finance to buy the company,” she said. “But the money required was so great, and so many people were interested … it was quite impossible.”The Trocadero at Piccadilly Circus, central London, which boasts shops and hi-tech computer games, is undergoing a pounds 45m refurbishment to create what its owners say will be the world’s largest indoor urban theme park. Noddy, Big Ears, the Secret Seven and other Blyton favourites will find a new home inside the park in a pounds 1m “interactive store” selling books, videos, games and tapes. Children will interact with the characters, “meet Noddy, shake hands with Big Ears and buy the merchandise,” said Nick Leslau, chief executive of Trocadero.Mrs Baverstock said that her mother would have been happy to know her work was being taken into the next century “She was very progressive .. way ahead of her time,” she said..

The hotel and leisure industries are rapidly splitting into two. One side is making a steady recovery from the recession, while most of the other is destined to be inscribed on an infamous roll call in memory of those who succumbed to greed and the excesses of the free-spending, care- free 1980s.
Granada is convinced it will feature high up on the winners list. It has argued that it can raise hotel prices and simultaneously extract plenty of cost savings out of Forte through redundancies, and from the benefits of stronger buying power – particularly for food. The take-over victory comes at a time when analysts are forecasting growth of 2.5 per cent in real disposable income for this year, on top of the 2.25 per cent recorded last year. Most of this increased spending power is probably earmarked for the leisure markets.Granada is in a good position. It will be able take advantage of the expected uplift in spending by repositioning many of Forte’s hotels in higher market tiers, mainly by beefing up the customer offering. Installing satellite television and telephones in the 127 Travelodge hotels, for instance, will give it leverage to charge higher prices.
There is no search in it.” The Serpent and the Rope is a novel of spiritual searching, but without fulfilment.Nothing that Rao subsequently wrote had the impact of his first two novels, though his longest work, The Chessmaster and His Moves (1988), coincided with his winning the prestigious Neustadt International Prize for Literature Rao refused to compromise over its length or its difficulty Many reviews of the long-awaited book were hostile. Rama’s is a pilgrimage towards what is utterly pure, whether it be in art or in metaphysics, a search for the Holy Grail whereby godliness is distilled into an earthly vessel and the unattainable goal of life is Truth. It marked a return to the metaphysical roots of Indian thought and culture, whilst being at the same time a speculation on the possible shared spirituality in the histories of East and West. The Serpent and the Rope is a patrician novel in manner, but it could also be seen as a precursor of modern feminism in as much as enquiry into the nature of the Feminine Principle is one of its main themes, portrayed not only through the characters of Madeleine, Savithri and Little Mother, but in woman-honouring episodes woven in to the story, such as the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.Autobiographical elements are obvious, for the central figure is an Indian postgraduate student called Rama, studying at Montpellier, married to a Frenchwoman, absorbed by apparent connections between ancient Indian philosophy and European medieval heresies and quests. Apart from Kanthapura he wrote mainly short stories at the start of his career, many of which were brought together in The Cow of the Barricades and Other Stories (1947). They reflect his interest in social matters such as the plight of women in rural India.
However, nothing he had written to date prepared readers for his masterwork, The Serpent and the Rope, which came out in 1960.This took Indian writing in English away from the rural settings not only of his immediate peers but of the newer generation of novelists such as Kamala Markandaya. Kanthapura is a village caught up in the nationalist struggles of the 1930s and in the course of it Rao examines Gandhian thought (though not Gandhi himself) as a continuance of ancient spiritual truths to be found in the Puranas. The tale is told in the voice of a grandmother, Rangamma, through whom Rao seeks to capture some of the manner of traditional oral story-telling.Rao lived a long time, but he was in the first half of his life a slow writer. He was to make up for this in recent years when some of his most complex works appeared, but these were the product of long mental gestation which reached back to his first decades. It is closest in spirit to the village locales of the great Anand and Narayan stories, but already Rao’s philosophical cast of mind predominates. It was an English, however, strongly influenced, at the start of his writing career, by the cadences of his mother tongue.Kanthapura remains one of the key texts in post-colonial literary studies for investigating how forms of English can develop free of some of the accrued associations of British culture. Rao had begun by writing stories in Kannada, but as he became more fully integrated in to a European way of life, for a while studying Irish writers at the Sorbonne, he gradually moved towards expressing himself in English.
There, within a short time, he married a Frenchwoman, Camille Mouly, and started publishing stories in the Paris-based Cahiers du Sud.Though now we can see a figure who occupied borderlands between cultures and histories, exploring links and articulating intellectual connections, especially between Europe and India, this was not so apparent in his first novel, Kanthapura. After matriculating in 1927, Rao returned to Hyderabad, graduating two years later from Nizam’s College. He won the Asiatic Scholarship of the government of Hyderabad and left for the University of Montpellier. It was in Aligarh that Rao first learned French, the language which opened up for him a philosophical domain unknown to Anand and Narayan. His mother died when he was only four, so that his upbringing was mainly in the hands of his schoolmaster father and his spiritually minded paternal grandfather.
His philosophical bent can be traced to these beginnings, but so too may be his delight in the company of young women, since he knew so few in his childhood and youth.Though a Hindu by caste and culture, Rao was educated at a Muslim school in Hyderabad and at the Aligarh Muslim University in North India. His stature was recognised in India by several honours, including the Sahitya Akademi’s highest award in 1997.Raja Rao was born in 1908 (some records say 1909), a Brahmin from Hassan in Karnataka. He was the last of the quartet of writers, the others being Mulk Raj Anand, Nirad Chaudhuri and R.K. Narayan, who made English into a major literary language in the subcontinent. They all lived to great ages, but they were never close to each other.Rao was the most intellectually demanding of the four and there were plenty of people prepared to dismiss him as pretentious, even fraudulent.
